I've seen some pretty beastly battery times for some of the users here and haven't been able to achieve the same results on my phone. I'm running Synergy 1.3 w/ imoseyon kernel. I've also done the terminal change (su-cpu-option 8-etc.) and haven't seen a great improvement.
To any of you that are experiencing amazing times, can you please offer a good breakdown of what you did to get your results? I'm sure many of us would really appreciate it.

Since the first post, I've changed the nightly Synergy ROM builds and have flashed IMOSEYON's kernel. While I'm good with my battery, I would like to know what some of you did to get the beast battery life that some of you have shown.
Is there multiple methods you all are using or is there one base method I can start with and tweak some stuff from there?
I'd be interested to know as well. Are their diffent widgets that are notorious for sucking the life out of our phones. Services etc. News updates, mail things like Pulse and Flipboard and Weather updates and screen birghtness. Surely there is interest in this.

I was hoping to get some of your guys' input. SynergyROM's or CleanROM? Not just newest specific builds but ROM in general. I've been on Synergy since the day I have rooted by GS3 but read somewhere that it might not be as good as CleanROM but I can't find specific reason in the development section so I thought I'd post this here. I like Synergy and the kernel it comes with but I like to flash things in order to test so hopefully I could get some specifics.

Well, I will say this...I was using SynergyRom Nightly v1.7 a few days ago and I since switched over to CleanRom 2.0/CleanKernel 1.0 and it was much smoother than Synergy!! I was experiencing alot of lag going between apps and homescreen. I just flashed CleanRom 2.1 and it just keeps getting better!! I would suggest to you to try CleanRom 2.1, and im pretty sure you will be pleased with this build.

I think I will flash it right now. I'm a flash-aholic but I generally try to stick with one "brand." I've read some great things about CleanROM so I think it's time to switch and check it out

Then came along Scott who used to dev for the Rezound which I had and ran his CleanROM on that phone.
Long story short, my vote is for CleanROM 2.1. By a decent margin actually. It's just smoother and faster. Not only is real world performance better, but benchmarks are better too.

Funny you say that about the Rezound...I just installed CleanRom Standard 4.5 on my wifes Rezound the other night because I couldnt get any other Rom to work on her phone and it runs great and momma is happy about here phone not being all "Bloated" up...lol... and it runs great!
Yep, Scott seems to be a very intellegent dev and out of all the roms ive used...CleanRom 2.1 is by far the best most smoothest and stable rom ive used.

Have you noticed any difference in battery life from Synergy to CleanROM? I've been on the Synergy nightlies up to now and am looking for a change...

For me, I have had much better battery life on the SynergyROM (Ziggy kernel) but now I'm trying out that 747 kernel...seems ok. I still have SynergyROM r55 saved and that was the best for battery for me. I use battery monitor widget and always look at the mA's that are being used up and the numbers staid low on r55. They staid much lower on the games I played and also in general. That app kind of gives me the best idea as far as consumption. Its great!
But the ROM itself seems a lot smoother with fewer FC's on things.

I'm on CleanROM 2.0 and it seems great. No problems whatsoever, and good enough battery life for me. I was on Synergy 1.4 before, that was fine too. But all of the nightlies seem fraught with problems creeping in, and I don't want to reflash a lot of times. What I really want is a ROM that is reliable, and will work with the APP2ExtSD hack, but none I've tried does it.

Agreed. That's the point of these threads/forums is to ask questions and get input not just from the devs but also from the users and everybody's wealth of knowledge.
It's because of the input here that I have decided to give CleanROM a shot. Sure I could have flashed it and not noticed a difference but I wanted some concrete statements from the many users who could give me some facts about the differences in the ROMs. Anyway, both Dev's are brilliant...I wish I could somehow use the Kernel from Synergys r55 ROM on CleanROM...I'll have to see if there is a way to extract just the kernel from the r55 zip
My experience with synergy Rom wasn't pleasant. There is too much going on especially since it's in nightlies. Nit the best of battery life either. I've been following Scott's cleanrom and cleankernel. This combo has surpassed all my expectations. Great battery life and performance. Very stable and clean. If you want to get the most usage with the top performance install cleanrom. Cleankernel and leankernel are neck in neck for me. They both do as advertised. I just like cleankernel because it is made to be stable and save battery while delivering performance. I'm running at 1ghz and there is no lag.

1ghz ... damn...I have mine at 1.2 and also get amazing battery life....thanks for the input. The more and more I use it, the more I'm liking CleanROM!
I enjoyed Synergy! Everything I used on a day to day basis was running without any hiccups.

I am a noob at this stuff still and flashed Clean ROM 2.1 and CleanKernel 1.2 last night, which was my first ROM. I LOVE it compared to the stock Touchwiz OS. It's OH so smooth and zippy! I will probably stick with this rom for a good while! I installed the Nova launcher to try it out and like it as well. I REALLY like the fact that you can change the quick panel widget buttons!!! I am experiencing a small problem however, and wanted to see if anyone else was running into the same thing...
Using the stock alarm clock widget I set my music by choosing one of my music files, but every time I click on "choose file" it locks up and says that the clock has stopped working. It also happens when I try and choose a ringtone for a specific contact out of my music files. I have searched the clean rom thread and one other person was having the issue, but no one else was, so it never got addressed. And being new to the forum, I can't post on that thread yet.
Anyone else having this issue?

I think that's because u r on nova launcher, I also use it and that's only because I can change the pixel density so everything is much smaller ( I use an app called density changer its awesome when set to 240)but anyway go into the stock music player find a song click and hold on it and then you will have the option of selecting it as an alarm clock that has worked for me.

Many of the jb roms are stable and have better battery life than stock ics you'll have to try some to see what works best for you. I'm running liquid smooth with h0tcaze kernel.

I agree, you'll need to try out some custom ROMs yourself and see which ones you like better. Remember to give each ROM at least a couple of days of usage so as to it can settle and a full battery cycle before judging its battery life.
Personally, I'm using SkyJB and happy with its battery life. You should be able to get 24 hours on a charge with 2 hours of on-screen time.

I've long been a fan of SeanZ's ROMs, but the latest builds of SkyJB have left me wanting. I've spent the past couple of weeks on car vs. driver's Nibbles ROM and it's a work of art. Couple of kernel choices, high levels of customization, and install only the cruft that you want.
While I still think it's the best choice, moving to a custom ROM isn't your only option, either. You can consider instead just rooting your stock install and then doing a small bit of work to better improve your battery performance:
Make sure you're always using the stock charger, using anything else will often prevent your phone from entering Deep Sleep
Use something like Titanium Backup to freeze all the carrier and Samsung garbage
Turn off automatic brightness, and Wifi/Blutetooth/GPS if you're not using them
Turn off auto refresh on all of your social network apps (this is the dumbest default-on setting I've ever seen; why does anyone need to download newsfeeds when they're not looking at it?)
Keep a close eye on Settings/Battery and use BetterBatteryStats to see what's truly doing the damage
Just remember to make a nandroid backup of your entire phone and make multiple copies of that backup before proceeding with anything.

In also installed Nibble a couple of days ago, two kernel options, can't remember the name of mine, it had a Z in it, and it was version 3.
I had used Sean's on ICS, and was going to go to Sean's JB, but I started reading threads and liked what I read about this ROM.
It is the most stable ROM I've ever installed, and with the clock slowed down to 1,026, conservative governor and other power tweaks, I'm getting the best battery life I've ever gotten on any rom on this phone.

I am a new member of XDA, but have been installing roms and following multiple phones for years. I need help. I am having multiple problems with AOSP based ROM's. The biggest one being battery life, the other being random reboots. I can only get less than an hour and a half of on screen time. The random reboots have been with recent roms. I have tried multiple, multiple kernels and they didn't seem to work... at all.:crying: Any help will be appreciated. :laugh::good:

im able to get 20+ hrs and 3-5hrs of screen on time with 4.2.2 roms.
try better battert stats to see if you have a rogue app.
i could honestly count the reboots ive experienced on both my hands total since around september. running KTkernel and a few different AOSP roms.
good luck. i know its not much, but i hope you narrow it down.

Try differ kernels Kt747 is what I use and they have tons of mods as well as team kernelizers make mods for it as well the threads are awesome and most your questions will prob be answered some where in there

4.2 is pretty stable, although the trade off is shaky WiFi to 3g to 4g hand offs.. Its pretty much the same for 4.3 ROMs as well.. 4.2 is a little more polished compared to some of the small bugs that still are being worked out in 4.3 ... Both are 100% better then touchwiz IMHO. Hope that helps.

Just use the stock kernals that come packed in cm 4.2 or 4.3.. And battery like in 4.2 is on par if not better than stock touchwiz.. 4.3 has a bit to go in that category

What you're asking is a very subjective question. I'd say most of the roms are nice to run and it really matters what features you and your daughter are looking for. AOSP offers a pure Google experience, but you're missing out on some great features touchwiz has to offer. There are good things associated with both options that might weigh you to one side or another.
Basically, I think factors that affect battery life the most aren't rom and kernel related, but applications running on your phone. I find any custom kernel you run will operate more efficiently than a stock kernel. You may notice a slight increase in battery life, but you'll definitely notice a boost in performance.
I'd recommend not relying on what people tell you are good roms, because everyone is going to have a different experience as to which is the best, you're basically going to get a bunch of answers to the same question. Even though our phones are the same, minor hardware and cpu differences could make one rom spectacular on one phone, and cause lag and frustration on another. Trying out roms and playing with them is part of the experience of finding the perfect balance between battery life and performance for your phone.
Odin is extremely easy to use, just follow the directions exactly as stated and you shouldn't have any issues.

I understand what you're saying I know with my phone Franco kernel only runs one core when the phone is a sleep and two with the ui and trinity is full performance. I wasn't sure if there was something like that here.

You have a good premise, but stability is also linked to user error most of the time, unless you're talking about AOSP nightlies. If someone tells you they had a horrible experience on a certain rom, it's hard to take their word for it because you have no idea what other modifications they made to a rom, or if they followed flashing procedures correctly. It's not fair to the developer of a rom to have somebody who messed up their phone talk badly about it. It steers away a potential user from a rom choice and frustrates developers who put countless hours into their rom.
As far as your kernel question goes, I would look at the governor options available as that's what controls your cpu. You can gear any kernel to be more efficient or battery friendly with an app like set cpu. Ktoonsez and zues kernel have many governor choices available, as lean kernel would be much more stock like, but leaner. A governor such as pegasusq will control both your cores and only turn your second on if needed.

Since we're suggesting apps Greenify works pretty good for me. Probably got me a couple more hours. It kind of works like Titanium Backup's freeze option. You choose what you want to greenify and it "freezes" them until you start them yourself. Then puts them back to sleep when you exit.
Don't know if you look but there's a ton of crap running that doesn't need to be all the time. Reminds me of msconfig.

"best" in roms and kernels is dependent on a variety of factors...to include settings and signal amongst other things.. Please take a look and try them all to determine what it is you need.
