The baseband version you mentioned sounds like the M200KRKC1 of the korean m200 since there is no such radio like that on i9020t/9023/i9020a.
If that kc1 part is correct you got the korean m200.
Shutdown device, pull out battery, you will see model in battery slot

As long as you dont mess with the radio/bootloader you are good.. the only difference between the 3g (i902x/m200) variants is the radio baseband config.

Bootloader is generally fine but leave radio as it is that is latest for that variant.
Fyi if you want jelly bean.. there are reports that the cwm zip that i put together (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1784497) works on the m200.

Ok that answers your question there... its a i9023. As per the box they just reused boxes without checking what the model actually was. The confusing part before was that the baseband version doesn't match the european/north american models.

Guys, do you have working links for the GRI54 radio?
I looked for it at this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975105
But none of the links worked out.
Can someone post a working mirror?
Thanks!

Strange, I have the XXKB3, but with GRI40...
I installed this nandroid backup provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093
The Nexus S is now stock and unrooted. But my baseband version is still: I9020XXKB3
What is the original baseband version for android version 2.3.1, build number GRH78 and how can I go back to it?
not sure why you want XXJK8.. XXKB3 has the best performance for most people but whatever here it is.
http://www.mediafire.com/?083o9f698mjzlkh extract to tools folder then fastboot flash radio radio.img using adb
Thanks
It is just that I wanted the nexus S to be completely stock. I dont know if I would receive OTA updates from google if I had baseband XXKB3? And I think the baseband XXKB3 is for the european version of Nexus S?

GRI54 is European. CM7 follows American.
So pretty much KB3 is a European radio, but they both work the same. Whatever is the best for you, use it. It's not a big deal.
This radio thing is getting confusing. I am in Asia which I think follows Europe more closely compared to US. But my Nexus is from bestbuy. I should be using the europe radio then?

I really don't think there's a difference between Europeans and Americans radio. The Nexus S works in predetermined frequencies for GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and HSPA (900/1700/2100) and that's it. So no matter where are you if your carrier support those frequencies the phone is gonna work. If it don't than you gonna have problems, probably you won't be able to use 3g per example.
Besides all this stuff is regulated and follows same patterns to ensure compatibility betweens networks so the same phone can work in several caries. That's the whole point about most phone are quad-band for GSM (more frequencies so it's more likely it will make calls) and tri-band for HSPA.

Hey guys,
I need to update to manually update my nexus S to 4.0.3 with the available update (128MB) file. My main concern is that i dont know which version i have (means whether it's I9020T or I9020A etc.) I bought the unlocked GSM version from Best Buy US on the very day of release during my visit last year and the box had T-mobile SIM in it as well. Currently I'm not in US and my Nexus is running stock 2.3.6 unrooted with baseband: I9020XXKF1 and build no: GRK39F. Now please can someone tell me, can i go on with the update through the process mentioned here:
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-gsm-nexus-s-ice-cream-sandwich
And will it give me that "recovery backlight" or "no service" or any like bug, experienced by many of the users????
The version should be on the back of the battery. Or on the box it came in (on a tag with bar codes if I remember correct).
Then just find the proper OTA for you here on xda and follow the procedure you posted.
Oh and I don't know about others but I never had a major problem. Just a couple of times the android OS kept the phone awake for a long time.

Yeah there was a Tmobile sim in the box and I9023 is for the SLCD models, right? And i'm sure that i have an SAMOLED version. So should i go on with the update??? I am tired of waiting for the updates but i'm reluctant because of those recovery and no radio after the update bugs.

The code is not on the battery. It is on the phone, UNDER the battery. I.e. remove the battery, and check the samsung sticker.

Thanks mat, got it. It's GT-I9020T, so i think it's safe to update it manually... Will try it tonight.
BTW there arent any issue or problems after manually updating it, right???
omg!!! but how can you buy a phone, and expensive too, and don't even know wich one you bought!!!! shame on you!!!

I updated Manually after I revived the OTA update but wouldn't install (my guess is due to Google throwing on the brakes) and have had no issue. If you Download the OTA zip from XDA you will have to re-root as the offical update will lock the phone again.

Interesting I came here on the same mission, to find out if it was safe to update mine.
I removed the battery and it borrowed my Dads glasses to read the label, it definitely says modelno: I9020A
I didn't actually buy mine, it was acquired by purchasing at work for a developer project, but its unlocked, didn't come with a SIM and I've used it with my t-mobile SIM back at home in the US, but I'm currently using it with great results, including USB tethering with a pre-pay O2[UK] SIM.
So which version/model does this make my phone?
how do i check whether my device is a i9020a or i9020t??
baseband- m200krkc1
its the korean variant
please help
The box for the device should have it listed next to all the SN and barcode info, it will be the bold heading at the top of this section.
You can also check the sticker under the battery, it's small text but it's there.
I think yours is m200. Like you said its the Korean variant. The question is: is it possible to flash 9020/3 stuff on it?

Go into settings, about phone. Then where it says baseband version, it will have I9020T or I9020A plus a few other letters and numbers.

Thanks for the reply but mine is: I9020XXJK8
If it doesn't say whether it's an i9020A or i9020T, it's an i9020T.
Yours is similar to my I9020T which is show my baseband as I9020XXKI1

Once you unlock a phone I don't think you can relock it once again, so no I don't think the phone will re-lock again. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though
Hope this helped!

The phone can be relocked by carrier OTA, but the chances of this being done are zero.
Also to OP. How are you planning on updating your baseband? It cannot be updated except by LG Updater where you flash an entire rom or the KDZ tool, which also requires you to flash an entire rom. Flashing the baseband only is not possible at this time on the P999 version of this phone. Don't use the P990 tool to flash a baseband as the chip is different and you will render your phone a tablet with no radio.

None of the G2X/P999 phone updates will relock it.
The G2X/P999 baseband cannot be changed by itself, it can only be changed by applying the full update which includes the kernel, operating system, baseband, and RIL that is contained in the KDZ file provided by LG or T-Mobile or other cell-phone service provider/carrier and installed through using the official LG Updater or over-the-air (OTA) by T-Mobile, etc. There are posts in the G2X forum with instructions about how to update the G2X/P999, do not use any updater and/or KDZ file for the Optimus 2X/P990. Here's my instructions:

You actually don't have to update the baseband just for that rom there's a zip similar to owains that makes new roms work on the old baseband.... Get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714536
