[Q] Backing up apps in Link2SD before flashing new ROM

Do you need to back up apps found in link2sd with titanium backup if you want to restore it after flashing a new rom?? I mean its already in the sd card so do i need to back it up? Any help would be appreciated!!

Yes, you still need to back up your apps. The files in the 2nd partition will probably get wiped if you flash your phone and the links on the internal memory will definitely get wiped.
Easy steps:
backup your apps & data with titanium
flash and install new ROM
[preferably] change setting so that all apps are installed to internal memory
install link2sd and install script. Reboot.
restore apps from Titanium. Note: if you run out of internal memory while Titanium is reinstalling all your old apps, it will proceed to install the remaining apps on your SD using a2sd.

Another reason to do it via backup is that if you're using link2sd's dalvik-cache linking, the optimized dalvik may not match the new ROM. For example, I'm not sure I would wouldn't want to take optimized dalvik generated on a JIT-enabled 2.1 and run it on a 2.2.1 system or vice versa.

[Q] Help coming from Windows Mobile to android

So i am very new to android, i did however figure out how to get root and get clockwork and flashed a custom rom. I have two questions. 1. I am currently running honeysense rom and see there is a 7.3 update, how do i go about installing the update? will doing the update erase all my apps i downloaded? If so i did back them up using titanium back up.... do i have to do wipe data, cache and all that in clockwork before installing the update?
2. If i want to do a completely new rom what are the steps to doing this as i have all this stuff on my sd card will post a pic of it curious as to what can all be deleted to free up space when starting fresh...
3. Last question sorry, i made a back up of "stock" rom before flashing the honeysense, and i named it "stock" where is that located??

Check what Android version they both are if what you have now and the update are the same Android version (2.3.4 for example) then you should be able to just wipe the Dalvic cache when flashing from ROM manager. This will keep all of your apps and settings and flash the ROM. I'm not sure what version it is, its on the download link for the rom's link I have a issue where my phone shuts off and gets stuck on the screen after the splash screen and stays there happens every two days or so and this update is suppose to fix it here is the link doesn't really say anything bout what version android it is
never mind i cant post links yet, but in honeysense forum section on here just uploaded a 7.3 suppose to fix my issue i dont think its a change in android version just a fix. If that is the case do i do apply update from sd or apply zip from sd?

You can just apply the update from SD, you can even do it with ROM manager and it's a little more straight forward. I'd just take a swing at it and hope it works, if not you always have backups you can restore.
And no, all of your backups should be on your SD card, you dont need to wipe the SD card when flashing a new rom.

ok its 312 mb so im assuming do a full wipe and reflash correct? if this is case can i copy the clockwork mod file that contains my back ups to my computer and also titaniumbackup file to my cpu do a install the rom on my phone then do a format of my sd card? and have it be blank then copy and paste clockwork mod and titaniumbackup back to my sd card and be good to go?

a full wipe does not mean wipe the SD card. you can leave that untouched

I think you misunderstood me, you DONT need to wipe your sd card, wiping data/cache wont touch your sd card, and flashing wont do anything to it either, you should be able to leave all of those files on it.

i got what your saying i just wanted to start fresh i guess you could say...with a fresh sd card and this newer build i just downloaded the file and its 312 mb so i figured i would just start back from scratch, and wondering if i can do a full wipe on the phone put the rom on my sd card flash it, i have a back up of the older version in case something goes wrong on my sd card can i take the backups copy them to my computer along with the files in titanium, after the format is done with the sd card copy and paste them back on the sd card and restore titanium files and if need be restore the previous version of the rom? so then i have all most of my free space back on the sd again. Will this all work this way?

Ok, i get what youre saying now. Yeah, there's no reason that won't work. I transfered everything from my SD to my computer and then back to another SD because i got a 32GB one. You shouldn't have any problem with that.

How can I put all backups and recovery on the card? It deletes the rom folder I create to put all the roms in. I have to create the folder every time I change roms. This is anoying as hell. I think your doing something wrong because it shouldn't do that, what ROM hase it done that in? And what at our steps to flashing? As to backups on your sd car when you go to backup there an option to back up to external so card.

I was running jellywiz, and I flashed the executioner. I had to reinstall cwm. And I had to create the roms folder again, the folder where I keep my downloaded roms. As for flashing roms, I do a factory reset, wipe davlik, and cache. It's kind of annoying having to recreate everything. Thanks

Did you flash a 4.2 ROM??? It does that if you don't use an updated recovery.

You are definitely doing something wrong because that is not expected behavior.
A 2GB SD card is ridiculously undersized for backups. A single nandroid or TiBu would likely take all of that space if it even fit. Perhaps it's failing to backup to the external card and defaulting back to internal memory?

I would recommend at least a 16G sdcard. You need that much to stores backups, stock boot rom, custom rom, and you data files to restore. Things like contacts, calendar, etc should always be backed up before you install custom ROM.
CWM is a good boot loader to use as it provides many options and also use something like Titanium backup as your backup manager.

If you do a data reset from the updated recovery will it delete the directory on the internal SDCard where the backup of the stock ROM is?

What recovery are you talking about? If it's cwm touch no it doesn't! I factory reset every time I flash a new ROM (and I'll flash a couple a day sometimes) the only way you'll delete those in recovery is if you manually delete a backup or if you go under the mounts and storage menu and format internal SD card.

So I am talking about the clockworkmod stock rom backup. When I backup it puts the backup in the following location which I will call LocA:
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
This is not my SD card tho. My external SDCard is located at which I will call LocB:
/mnt/extSdCard/
But I also have which I will call LocC:
/sdcard/
I when I go to look at the ‘Phone’ while connected to USB I can see LocA and see the backups, when I use the app SDCard Manager I can go to LocC and I can see that they mirror each other. Why is my stuff duplicated? It is wasting space?
Also when I boot into CWM recovery the menu that says load from SD card actually points to LocA. My fear is that since LocA is really internal memory that a factory reset will delete this and since CWM recovery cant see LocB that I will be locked out. In other words cant load the backup of the mod or the new downloaded CM10.

Okay gotcha, a factory reset does not delete your internal memory. What it deletes is your user apps, settings, etc. That is the same place mine is backed up to and like I said I factory reset every flash. However, if you're really worried about under the backup option in cwm select backup to external SD card.
As for the sd card 0 and SD card. I don't believe there are really two files of everything. I believe it's more just naming for the android system, but maybe someone else can confirm this for me

With that info im confident i wont get stuck in some limbo. During my lunch break ill try to flash CM10 again this time with a factory reset and see if i get further than the spinning logo.

I don't do the cwm touch. For some reason I can't find any roms that I've backed up, So I use the typical cwm. I don't know, maybe it's just me, I'm screwing up somewhere. But everytime I have to reinstall cwm. Thanks for the help

I am FAR from being an expert, but i had to reflash cwm everytime i restarted the phone until i flashed it and from the menu selected prevent stock recovery.

[Q] Nandroid backup, app and sdext

Good morning, I'm here to do some questions about the nandroid backup.
Fist of all I'm using rashed's cm10.1.5 with halo and I have s2e installed and all running smoothly. I also have Clockwork 5.Now the questions.
1- Can I do a nandroid backup from my clockwork? Do I have to install something? Or something like that? What is the easy way to make a backup of my data?
2- In case I decide to change the rom, can I get my app back with my nandroid backup? How?
3- Will my ext partition in the sd work like before? I mean if the nandroid backup will restore my s2e, my app in the ext partition and the script or it will show an error because the appdata will take more space than the free space in the phone. For example I have my ext part with 400mb occupied. So I do a nandroid backup. When I'm going to restore it, it will restore to te ext, or to the phone?
3- I think this is not number free but number 6534532, and it's a noob (very nooooob) question. I always have trouble when a zip says "flash it from recovery" or "Install it from recovery" and all that options. How I know when I have to choose "Install ZIP from sd card" or "Install UPDATE from sd card"? what is the difference? -because I think that I have half bricked (bootloops, stuck in logo) a lot of times because from this. Thanks from now.

If all apps are on internal memory then you will not lose them (If you want, you can backup all your apps with MyBackup Root)

It did not restore my sdext backup sometimes and when it did, the ROM boot looped
TWRP is the best for wiping/backup/restoring SDext backup

mmm The bakcup save the app in the phone. But how about the symlinks that are created in the phone that directs to the ext? It will backup the app anyway in the ext or only will backup the "Link"?
Another question. The Dalvik cache is important? Because I can move all the app to the phone, but if I move the app, the app data and the dalvik cache all that get bigger than my internal memory, but if I move only the app and the app data it fits perfectly. So can i backup the app and the data only and wipe the dalvikcache?

I think I'll move all the app and the appdata to internal memory and then do the backup. So all the app and the data will be saved. And after flashing rom y will put it. But the dalvik cache i'll leave in the sdext. So it will be erased, but i was thinking it doens't matter, but I wanted an expert opinion, to aovid getting bootloops or have to reflash the rom 2 or 3 times or whatever problem can be found. Thanks a lot.

The backups, for any partition, besides cache and dalvik cache, are exact duplicate images of the partition(s). Comparable to that of an ISO image for the PC.

If you choose to backup both sd-ext and the data then the apps symlinked to the sd-ext will be restored on restoring from the clockwork recovery...

COMMON WAYS FOR ROOTED AND NON ROOTED :
CONTACTS : Simple. Android has given us the unique feature of backing up using the phone itself.
-Open the Contacts app
-Press the Menu Button
-Press Import/Export
-Export to SDCard
and youre done. The phone will make a *.vcf file in your system which can be used on any android phone.
IMAGES : Two Alternatives. Using an App or Manually
-App : Use Quick Backup to SD by Linever corporation from the playstore. It backups in the SD card by making a folder for each album that you've transferred.
MANUALLY :
-Copy the DCIM folder.
-Copy the Pictures folder
-Paste it somewhere safe
CALL LOGS : Use Easy Backup frim the playstore
SPECIFIC for NON ROOTED vs. ROOTED.
NON ROOTED PHONES
APPLICATIONS: TWO WORDS. APK EXTRACT from the playstore. IT saves your apps on the Internal SD card and then you can safely copy all your apps
APP DATA : The MOST IMPORTANT backup after contacts
Nobody likes to lose their HighScores or the points earned and start from the beginning.
-Download Helium App from the Playstore
-Download Helium App for the PC (it prompts)
-Enable USB Debugging from developer options
-Backup on the INTERNAL SD first.
-Copy the folder named CARBON from the internal SD to anywhere safe.
You can restore by the same app on some other phone by just pressing restore. Somehow for me I copy the carbon folder to the INTERNAL SD again and then restore as a direct restore from sd does not work.
ROOTED PHONES
We guys have a lot of options.
Ohh yes we do.
APPLICATIONS and APP DATA
Two APPS. TITANIUM BACKUP & HELIUM
-Open Tiranium Backup
-Tap Backup/Restore
-If you want to backup just one app, tap on it and select backup or;
to backup all the apps, use the tick mark in the app on the backup/restore tab.
Restoring Via TIB.
This is one issue many face. But it is simple.
-Just open TiB
-Press Menu button
-Press Batch Actions
-See for restore
-Press on Restore Apps with Missing Data.
HELIUM
The same process as non rooted users, but then we dont want USB debugging on or the Desktop app.
Just give root permissions and start backing up.
I find helium better than TiB for App and App data.
Again. Opinions differ
This is a basic guides for the "Important Things" in our phone.

PRECAUTIONS :
Never Backup system apps and try to push them on other roms.
Dont even try pushing them into system/app or system/priv-apps.
Each system app is made according to a relevant framework.
This can lead to a possible funny behaviour of the phone and many unexpected crashes and weird bootloops.
Its always advised to backup and restore the general utility apps that can be downloaded from the playstore to save data and download time
Do update backups once a week. This helps your backup not to get obsolete with time

Nandroid backups are a life saviour if you dont want to flash the whole stock rom then again do the process of custom recoveries etc. just because you had a "bootloop"
Like c'mon! A bootloop/random ui crashing and you flash a full stock rom. Sounds funny.
But yes, people have to do it if they dont have a handy nandroid backup.
Pre requisite:
-A Custom Recovery.
The best and widely used ones being Philz Recovery
TWRP Recovery
CWM recovery
(Will update links after sometime)
-Knowledge of how to flash things via odin.
-Some common sense on selecting what to flash
How to Install a Custom Recovery
Should I tell that?
in brief
1.Boot into download mode
2.Connect phone to odin and wait for odin to recognise
3.Select the recovery in AP/PDA
4.Press start and let it do its work.
How to enter into a custom recovery
a. Press Volume up + Home Button + Power Button. As soon as you see The GalaxyS4 screen, leave all three and in a jiffy press Volume Up + Home Button.
b. Use quickboot/any other mod that you run that boots your phone in recovery.
Nand Backup
a. When youre in the recovery, press on backup/restore
b. Press on backup and do a full system backup.
It usually takes 30 minutes for a bloated firmware backup. Restore takes the same time.
Do have atleast 40% battery.
Remember, backups can be selective too (Only Data/Only System etc etc.)
Same is for the restore.
A nand backup will always restore you to your last backup position (obvious). So do keep manual backups too.

Anyone know how to backup bluetooth pairings? That causes me most pain when updating roms. Titanium has the feature but does not work

-Download Helium App from the Playstore
-Download Helium App for the PC (it prompts)
-Enable USB Debugging from developer options
-Backup on the INTERNAL SD first.
-Copy the folder named CARBON from the internal SD to anywhere safe.
You can restore by the same app on some other phone by just pressing restore. Somehow for me I copy the carbon folder to the INTERNAL SD again and then restore as a direct restore from sd does not work.

APPLICATIONS and APP DATA
Two APPS. TITANIUM BACKUP & HELIUM
-Open Tiranium Backup
-Tap Backup/Restore
-If you want to backup just one app, tap on it and select backup or;
to backup all the apps, use the tick mark in the app on the backup/restore tab.
Restoring Via TIB.
This is one issue many face. But it is simple.
-Just open TiB
-Press Menu button
-Press Batch Actions
-See for restore
-Press on Restore Apps with Missing Data.
HELIUM
The same process as non rooted users, but then we dont want USB debugging on or the Desktop app.
Just give root permissions and start backing up.
I find helium better than TiB for App and App data.
Again. Opinions differ
This is a basic guides for the "Important Things" in our phone.

You mentioned to back up data and apps through APK Extract, Helium, TiB on the internal SD.
Can I do it on the external SD instead? Would that affect the restore process if i was to restore data and apps backed up on the external SD Memory card?

Lol first edit your comment and shorten the op thread
And yeah..if everything is on the internal sd, copy these folder manually from the internal to external. By default these apps will save info on the internal sd card.
Thus you have settings in the apks to select where to backup.
Just Helium doesnt work on extsd, be it backup/restore.

Need some help, i have been making backups with recoverys TWRP and Phliz both. I did a full backup of my stock rom 4.4.2 and with TWRP when restore i was unable to write to internel sdcard. And ita was really a annoyn situation. And with the new Philz when i did the restore after boot all apps keep fc could not use it at all.
Any idea why this happens is it due to rong way of wipe (data, system, cashe) when i flash custom roms? Or way that i backup the stock rom? This only happens with the stock rom

Hello there @deepankers
I have rooted my phone and everything was going absolutely smooth until today I can't do anything to my external SD card (delete, create folder, etc...). I have already done the SD fix using the app "next app* when I first rooted the phone. I tried Uninstalling then reinstalling es explorer however the problem still exists! I'm sure that es explorer has root access. I tried using the stock "my files" app to do any modifications to my external SD however with no luck!
I appreciate your help in resolving this issue.

i am facing the same issue using cwm 6.0.64 when i restore my stock rom backup and reboot lot of apps fc such as gapps but after some research in this forum i realize that only the latest philz recovery could backup and restore a stock rom properly

I think the isuue is stock rom do a format to its partions which is why it do many isuues. Coz in reovery it do its own wipe before resotre. Which makes problems to stock.
Even in new philz i had the issue but what i did was wipe full (not internalsd) restore only system and boot once after that i restore data. In that way no isuue at all. All work good.

I'd like to recommend this app to backup SMS. I've used it a lot of times when changing ROMs, work pretty well. Also you can upload your backup to Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. and save it on External Storage. Quite useful .
