The parylene coating stuff is pretty cool. I wish there was a way to do it easier.
i wonder if you can take off the battery cover and put it back on and it still be waterproof....one of the advantages of the S4 over the other phones is the removable battery...also wondering if putting in and taking out a set of headphones would eventually wear down the coating on the headphone port....
i dont plan on submerging a phone under water (unlike all the idiots who bought the xperia z who are now having speaker problems) but would be a nice little insurance policy of types if it did happen to fall into a puddle and i were able to pick it up and dry it of quickly
pretty cool technology either way and im sure more phones in the future will have this kind of protection coming from the factory
edit: also wondering about the speaker....i know when the xperia z showed off its water proofing no one did a speaker test after it came out of the water and it seems like everyone who bought the phone submerged it in water and the speakers have been going crazy....i see in the liquipel video they test that phones screen after it comes out but thats not what im worried about i have dropped a phone in the toilet before and dried it off and the screen still works....im more worried about the sound....

If you have a phone that has a removable battery, the battery gets coated too..pretty much the entire phone gets coated.. I personally didn't test my speaker immediately after I put it in water, however I don't have any speaker issues either

I really want to get my phone protected by liquipel but there are so many mixed reviews and its tough to count on company made videos as they will always show the best side...I have dropped my phone in rain and constantly take it into the bathroom to listen to music and this has resulted in water damage (I know some of you will say "well dont take it into the bathroom idiot" but its my thing dont judge)
I just emailed liquipel to see if they have a date for the s4 and will be publishing the email here once i get it...I am still on the fence about getting it.

snake oil?
I bought Sony Xperia L (C2104) just a month back. Already faced quality problem regarding photo and video capture.
Today it fell from my daughter's hand (only from 2-3 feet height) and the screen got too many cracks. Though the touch screen is working.
I have used (and dropped many times) many phones--- Nokia E51,E75, C6, Samsung Ace, Samsung S2, this is first phone which broke like this.
Even cheaper set sony Xperia J has Gorilla Glass, why this set doesnot have only sony can tell. Actually it was my fault, I thought a mobile in this price range must have a gorilla or alike glass.
FYI.
Does anybody know the approx charges required for replacing the screen? I think its better to sell this phone in ebay and buy another gorilla glass product. What do you suggest?

Gorilla Glass doesn't really prevent screens from being cracked. Its most important role is to protect the screen from being scratched.
I've seen lots of devices that have Gorilla Glass with a broken screen.
Your phone just felt the wrong side.

Also Xperie L has a scratch resistant glass preventing glass being scratch. It's not build to protect the glass from being cracked.

Sony mobiles's service is also pathetic
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I am wondering what is the use of these glasses, only for better touch experience and looks? what about durability? My old nokia C6-00's plastic screen with a screen protector looks as new as it was earlier.
I found sony mobiles's service is also pathetic. The sony mobile's service center is not in my city, I asked them the approx charges to replace the screen / digitizer so that I can order it and later when the same will available with them I shall then send my phone for repairing.
But the arrogant people in the service center, reluctant to tell me anything in advance. They want me to sent the phone after that they will tell me the charges -> order the same -> wait 10 -20 days .. blah blah blah..
Pathetic.
Well each phone has its own facts , all the gorilla glass are not strong as hell ! My friend has lumia , before buying he was impressed with the durability of it as it was demonstrated by the person at nokia shop ! But his phone felt suddenly over a steel and phone is broken !

Yes!
Mine felt around 2 or 3 feet on tile. It was no problem.
Then it felt around 4 feet or a little more (on tile) but nothing happenned.
I will repair it asap because my connection between the two parts of the slider are broken. Need to buy an other slider.
It also depends how it falls.I dropped my old lg o1 on hone, cement, between stairs for 2 floors, etc and it worked very well.I find the most damaging dropping it on small rocks(gravel) ... I also dropped my XL from about 3 feet or a little more on a corner on a hard plastic surface and it didn't even got a scratch.I find the back cover really really resistant to scratches.I went for 1 week in a holyday and on the beach the sand scratched a lot my screen protector but the back cover looks like first day.I also kept it in girls bag with tons of other stuff like keys, coins, lighters, other phones, etc and not even scratch.I think it's the best back cover that i ever seen. It's almost like it doesn't need a case, but due to further drops from a higher area one case is needed.
About the screen...I really can't say how resistant it is.I think i don't want to know

Collecting a list for Sony Z1 Compact screen protector & tempered glass list
So far got:
Moshi
Iloome
Mpero
thanks for the list, may i have the link pls as i can't find it anywhere online.
With a quick search I can see:
Case-Mate 2 Pack Screen Protector for Sony Xperia Z1 Compact for 9.99€
FoneM8® - Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Screen Protector (5 Pack) for £1.49
Expert Shield - THE Screen Protector for: Sony Xperia Z1 Compact *Lifetime Guarantee* for £6.95
And a couple of others, so manufacturers are getting there.
I personally would wait until major screen protector companies come into play.

If I am correct that the Z1f (Japan Version) and the Z1 Compact is indeed the same screen size/ sensors/ camera & flash location. After few days of researching there are already few Tempered Glass out for Z1f in Japan.
I am liking the Crystal Armor and will soon place an order, will update once received.

Found this set by mumbi (3x front, 3x back) on Amazon (DE) - don't know if they ship worldwide though.
I have had my Z1 Compact for less than a week, been ultra careful and already it has a minor scratch on the back panel. This is ridiculous!
I wonder, do you lose the warranty for the front screen if you only remove the back ASF sheet?
But for now, I guess I'll have to fast-track buying some front+back protectors before this gets too bad!

I know,,
I am currently using some of those cheap 'pack of five' screen protectors and just cutting a front side protector down a bit for the back until I can get hold of one.. (ideally I am waiting for a tempered glass front which include a back side protector like they do for the Z1 (and which is easily for sale in eurpore - not japan)
to further protect it I use it in a Roxfit book case - which aint bad.. but to use the magnetic cradle i need to take it out of the case (not a lot of hassle)
I emailed Sony complaining about the back and how it's poorly designed but the response I got was totally non committal and saying they didn't sell back protectors.

Sony Z1 Compact case + screenprotector
Hi guys,
Been looking at the Z1 Compact for a week now as I'm pretty sure that's going to be my new phone as my contract expires in April, and I doubt the S5,Htc M8 or Sony Z2 will be very pocket friendly. If my HTC ONE X would be a fraction smaller, 4,5 or 4,6" it would be great for one handed use.
So I've been having a look around for tempered glass/sapphire screen protectors and cases for the Z1 Compact , and apart from the ones posted on this forum didn't find anything interesting so i've decided to actually reach out to companies(through mail, fb or twitter) and ask if they were going to make any for the Z1 compact.
Spigen: no reply
brandoworkshop: no reply
xgear : no reply
Otterbox: no plans for a Defender series at the moment (if people request it enough on their fb page they might speed it up).
iloome: nothing planned for the moment
Zagg: really funny situation with these guys. Bought a Zagg Invisible shield for my current HTC One X, and was so happy with it and the lifetime warranty that i recommended it to my ex and everybody I knew. Sent them a question on fb, waited for a day....no reply.
Then I receive a notification that a polish bloke from a company called 3MK Screen protectors replied on my post on Zagg's page, recommending their products (which btw look pretty nice).
Lo and behold, 2 hours later zagg reply as well saying they have a screen protector in the works and that they're going to pass my inquiry about an Arsenal Case for the Compact to their design team. I think if people show an interest on their fb page, we might get something out of it.
At this point I think that if enough interest is shown to Zagg and Otterbox they might come up with great solutions for cases.
I've put a request to "Rhino Shield" and they will look into it (If the demand is high they likely come out quicker). They are not bad according to review and price are reasonable compare to other product which has the similar specification. Pls put a request to their email/ FB/ Twitter if you like this on your Z1 Compact.
http://shopify.evolutivelabs.com/
I've ordered this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IA1AVZA/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 if anyone else is looking for clear protectors for the back.

Had a look at their product, and looks promising, even though I was thinking about getting Tempered Glass (don't know why I have the feeling I'd manage to shatter it within the first month as I drop my phone face down from time to time, from about 60-70 cm height).
Asked on FB if they plan on making any for the Z1 compact and said it depends on demand, so if anybody is interested, let them know.
I tweeted Rhino Shield and got this response from them:
"we think we would, it might be ready in few weeks time"

Good news then!
Hello, everyone..
I took my t-mobile Sony Z3 out this weekend.. Got back home, back glass was broken..
I call t-mobile looking to use my insurance to have it replace but was told it will cost me $150 deductible..
Is this right..I thought the deductible was only for a lost phone or broken front display?
Any help will be greatly appreciated it..thank you
Sent from my D6616 using XDA Free mobile app
nah, that's it - deductible is required for any user-responsible damage. Looks like you'll have to shell out for this one. Sorry mate.
T-Mobile quoted my deductible as $175. That said, I did not get the insurance.
Try taking the phone to the Sony store.
I purchased a glass rear on ebay for £8.15 which arrived today brand new. There are videos online showing how to remove the back housing, which comprises about twenty seconds with a heatgun and a suction cup to prise it off. Mine isn't actually broken but I wanted a backup panel just in case. Might be easier and cheaper than you think.....
Do you have the website for the back glass?
The youtube video is called "Sony xperia Z3 Disassembly" by "nkn sam."
The glass was purchased via an ebay seller called "completefone" but there are quite a few on ebay, mostly in Hong Kong though, and the ones I've seen are general without any T-mobile insignias, which may or may not be an issue.
Hey Sony Z3 family
This is a update, just in case its help anyone
Just for the record I am not a expert, I am not a certified Sony tech or I am not even saying, I have personally done it..Disclaimer for insurance purposes of course.. Lol ? This is just information I found out..
But if I had to do it, this is what I might have done
If you go on ebay they sell the back glass for less than $20..
You will definitely need a heat gun, they have one on amazon with 700 positive reviews for less than $20
Also get one of those iPhone kit to remove the backplate it's like $15 on amazon comes with a bunch of fiberglass plastic flat tools to help remove things
Also be aware when you remove the cover, what the videos don't tell you is that you need to save your nfc patch, looks like a black wiring ring.. You need to attach that to your new cover and also there are two flat black cables that I think should go back on..
Also clean your camera with a q-tip and after you put everything back together.. You might need to hard reset your phone to factory settings, to get the camera to work properly, specifically auto focus..
But if you are willing to void your warranty, probably your phone won't be water proof unless you reseal it.. Which I don't know how, if anyone does please let me know..also take a chance on breaking it..
But the good news, with GOD's help, patients and if it all work out..
You will have save a $150 insurance deductible or $600 price of a new phone.. I think it also $150 insurance deductible if you lose or have you phone stolen ..
And have your phone back too it's sexy self again.. It's looks really ugly with the back smash..
Just my humble opinion
Sent from my D6616 using XDA Free mobile app
Sent from my D6616 using XDA Free mobile app
I forgot to mention get a suction cup there is a orange or red handle one on amazon about $6 works great on a flat surface but not too great on the broken glass.. No big deal because with the heat gun and plastic pry tools, you will get the cover off.. It's take time and patience.. Do not apply to much heat, you are not cooking the phone lol just trying to heat the glue behind it..
The suction cup should come in handy if you need to remove the back glass later for whatever reason..And it's looks cool tool
Sent from my D6616 using XDA Free mobile app
If you are uncomfortable with the DIY method, I'm sure local repair shops should do it for less than 1/2 the cost of the deductible.
Hey guys
You might be wondering WTF is this
Let me briefly explain
1 week ago I bought my Xperia Z3 dual and the screen cracked rendering the screen useless
I was searching online trying to see how much it was going to cost and I found out that the screen alone costs 250$+
That's extremely retarded just for a screen
So i thought why not order an OEM screen online and have it installed by a "Professional" worker (Not from sony) and Everything will be good right?
Nope...........
Things were more complicated than that
If the screen is removed waterproofing will be lost (Unless fixed by sony but I ain't paying 250$+ BS) so I thought then what the hell is the point of this phone if I can't submerge it in water
So that's where I came up with ghetto waterproofing
Just fix my phone by a "Professional" (Not from Sony) and send my phone to liquipel (A company that uses nano technology to make electronics water resistant IPX7 i think not sure)
What do you guys think?
