Having trouble rooting my Nexus S - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
When I first rooted my phone, it was easy and took 30 mins max, but now I've updated to jellybean and trying to root again, I just can't seem to install adb and the drivers (reinstalled OS).
I've tried various tutorials, but it's just not working.
If anyone could help via teamviewer, it'd be very much appreciated.

Why not just install a custom ROM. Isn't that what you're going to end up doing anyways?

Hi, thanks for telling me about this but once I've selected Nexus S blah... my phone reboots into fastboot mode and then on the tool window it just says,
< waiting for device >
I don't know why I'm having so much trouble, I've rooted many phones so far.

You need to install the Nexus S adb drivers. Just flash a ROM that's rooted already. There is a ota rooted ROM if you're trying to stay stock.

Recovery
Do you have a custom recovery installed such as CWM?

No I don't have a custom recovery because it was removed when I flashed ota jellybean

Yea, I've been telling him this. Quit trying to root your phone. Just install a ROM that's rooted already. Quicker and easier.

He can't flash it if he doesn't have root or fast boot! Try installing pdanet on tour computer, it magically made it work for me. Also try a couple different USB cables, for example my girlfriends USB cable that came with her WP7 doesn't let me do a adb or fastboot

Uhh he has fast boot. Vol up and power boots into fastboot. He doesn't need to be rooted to get there. Now from fastboot, install clockwork... then flash ROM. Simple.

Sounds like he is having problems with the Android SDK http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

Or I could be wrong but I think he can't cmd fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.

When I try to flash recovery via fast boot it just says waiting for device.
I have pdanet installed too.
I'm going to try it on my laptop tomorrow, maybe it will work on that.

Uhh he has fastboot on his phone but the fastboot commands are not working for him, aka he doesn't have fastboot.
Drivers and getting it is a total pain in the ass, keep trying new things and eventually it will work out. Did you try a different USB cable?

Uhh he does have fast boot. He just needs the adb drivers and the SDK. That is all. Then he can boot into fastboot then flash recovery then ROM. Viola!

HELP!!! Clockworkmod not flashing properly Brainmasters ICS and Linux Ubuntu 11.10

I flashed latest clockwork mod after installing brainmasters ics tweaked. When i noticed my mms wasnt working i decided to re flash another rom but when i booted into recovery it got back into fastboot mode and tells me "no boot or recovery img"
I have re flashed all versions through rom manager but they wont stick. I tried to push it with fastboot and my computer but my Ubuntu 11.10 wont recognize my Ns4g. I installed all the android sdk, adb, and fastboot files but when I type ./adb devices its doesn't come up with my device. ./fastboot flash boot recovery3101.img doesnt work either. 1st. post in the correct section. This way you can get your answer quicker and you're not annoying everyone.
2nd. Find yourself a WINDOWS PC and install android SDK and all drivers for your phone to be recognizable. Then follow one of the posts in here to flash recovery.
You could also install ROM manager from the market and use it to flash recovery through it but its always good to have a proper SDK setup for this type of emergency.
This has happened to me before and I have fixed it by flashing the latest cwmr multiple times.
Try using a different USB cable if your com still doesn't recongize it.
PS now I use twrp and i like it a lot better

I didnt see any other NS4g section. Sorry bud.
Would flash image gui work well to flash twrp?
When i use rom manager it says successfully flashes rom but then i reboot and get the sane no boot or recovery img. I dont have access to a windows pc...
Can a mod please move this to the nexus help section?
As stated, reboot from and get rom Manager from market. Try reinstalling recovery or scroll down and there is an option to use older versions and flash an older version.

Im okay with starting over but I cant even get my computer to recognize my NS4G. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and I have Android sdk and fastboot on my computer but when I boot my phone into fastboot it isn't recognized by my computer. All "./adb devices" or "./fastboot devices" brings up is nothing!
If I can get my Linux machine to recognize my phone I would gladly return to stock unrooted and start over.
Flash twice in rom manager. See if that changes anything. Don't reboot between just one after another. Also, in rom manager hit menu and clear download cache before you try flashing.

I've had this happen to me several times. The problem happens any time I use an app (i.e. Rom Manager or Flash Image GUI) to flash a new recovery.
The only way I've been able to resolve it is to
1. Flash cwm 3.1.0.1 with fastboot
2. Go into recovery and flash cwm 5.0.2.0.
3. DO NOT update CWM when relaunching Rom Manager or like app.

Problems flashing custom recovery

I have a strange problem. A while ago I successfully unlocked my infinity. That was before the jb update. I also successfully flashed custom recoveries and several roms. Didn't ran into any problems. When the official jb update came out, I restored original recovery and flashed a stock ics Rom, and after that successfully applied the jb update. The second update .30 also went smooth. I used the update file from Asus servers. Now I want to flash a custom recovery again in order to flash cleanrom. In adb I see my device and I can reboot with fastboot and stuff. So I think my drivers are ok. However as soon as I start to flash recovery.img it just says sending recovery and that's it. It just hangs there. Nothing happens. I tried everything, from changing usb ports and uninstalling drivers... It just can't send the recovery img. I use Scott's script to flash the recovery.blob. any ideas?

Are you saying you can not get TWRP or CWM installed ? or are you saying you do have one installed but no root ?
If it is the latter then can't you just flash a custom rom that has root built in ( like Baked ) then go back to twrp and now with root you can wipe and flash stock. ? I am sorry if I am miss understanding your question. But at least you get a free 'bump'

Thats correct, i am trying to get custom recovery, after that root is no problem.
Edit: i just installed a clean windows 8 installation. So no old drivers left behind or other weird stuff. I put my transformer in fastboot mode, driver is automatically installed, i see it under device manager. Stillno luck.... it hangs saying sending recovery.... no error messages. My previous attempt was under win7.

Glenner, did you make sure you have the img file in the same folder as you fastboot/adb command files?
If it says "sending recovery", I'd assume that it found the local file.
I don't use Windows, but I always read about driver issues in Windows. Maybe the auto-installed driver is wrong? Does "fastboot devices" return question marks or nothing?
i'm happy to report that finally it worked! seemed something strange with drivers/USB ports after all. Despite i already changed USB ports under my win 7 installation, i tried it again under win8, and suddenly it worked. I didn't reinstall the drivers or something, all went automatically. So the strange issues are driver issues for sure. Anyway, currently happy running cleanrom 2.3
thanks for all your suggestions and thinking along.....

[Q] HELP: "Device not found"

I am using Hasoon2000's All-in-One Toolkit to root my HOX. It's worked every time but this time.
Here is my story...
I've been trying to flash the ViperX 2.6 ROM for a couple hours now.
Each time I have gotten stuck in a Bootloop.
Through TWRP, I've wiped the cache/delvik(still didn't fix the problem).
I decided to go ahead and run my device's RUU.(relocked the Bootloader, and ran)
Well now, I try and run his toolkit to root again and the cmd prompt say "device not found".
When I go into the fastboot folder and select the cmd prompt from there and type "fastboot devices", it's able to recognize my device...
Any ideas as to what's going on?
Maybe his toolkit is not working properly...?
BTW, this is my first Android phone. EVER.

Well, first off, there is no version 2.6 of Viper ROM for the HTC One XL, which is our phone. It sounds to me that you have downloaded an international One X ROM. Which, could be bad for you. If the ROM flashed successfully, you've overwritten the boot partition, due in part to how the One X ROMs are flashed. If it wasn't flashed successfully, you may still be in luck.
Now. You say you are stuck in bootloop? If so, do these steps (Feel free to correct me anyone)
- Reboot your phone into bootloader
- Re-Unlock your bootloader
- Reflash TWRP (Custom recovery)
- Boot into recovery and wipe everything (Except phone storage)
- Flash a ROM for the ONE XL. NOT The International ROM
Hopefully you aren't bricked.

[Q] Trying to fix my S3 after failed update with limited tools.

I'm a bit up **** creek, the CM11 KitKat install failed (and I know why) but now I'm trying to recover it on a Mac. My phone is sitting in CWM-based Recovery v6.0.0.8, I have wiped and restored, and the KitKat update is still sitting on my phone, but ADB and OSX don't recognize the device. I'm guessing the best plan is to update CWM, but I don't have a microSD adapter ATM in order to get the update on the phone. Would I be able to update to KK if I managed that? The toolkits I see seem to always require windows. Any ideas would be thoroughly appreciated.

Do you have another device with an sdcard slot that you could put this in, download a TW 4.1.2 Rom zip for either CleanRom or BoneStock, then flash that to get you back in working order? Then you could update CWM to the latest version which supports KitKat.

Lol that makes the most sense. This is definitely the permanent solution. I'd be in the same situation since I have a similar setup as OP if I didn't own one as well.

He could also just fix his driver issue and fastboot install the recovery. Or adb push the flashable recovery zip

How would you do that for OSX though (the driver issue that is)? I know natively OSX does not recognize S3 since Google instituted MTP protocol in ICS. My MBP definitely does not see my S3 by just plug and play. I thought that's why we have to use that Android tool by Google to connect ICS+ devices to Apple computers or use third party apps like AirDroid (which I prefer).

Android file transfer works great for me, faster for transferring huge files. Otherwise I always use airdroid.

I can transfer a file and have access to my Windows desktop again. I've never used CleanRom or BoneStock before though, I simply download the ROM like from here, flash it, and that's it?

flash it, download rom manager for CWM or goomanager for TWRP and install recovery from one of those apps. Then you're good to flash KitKat.
Fixed, thanks for the ideas.

[Q] Update OTA crashed my root

Yesterday I managed to press install on the newest update, 4.4.4 on my Nexus 5. It was rooted and still is, but by installing this OTA it somehow made it crash. Now that I try to get into recovery mode I just get the android which is dead with an ! on it. It was rooted with Xposed and TWRP.
What do I do? Im on a Mac
OTA removed root replaces recovery. I'm amazed it managed to replace recovery whilst Xposed was installed. Anyway, seems like it did.
You must fastboot flash a custom recovery

The same really. Install fastboot and use the "fastboot flash recovery /pathto/your/recovery.img" command
