[Q] Update OTA crashed my root - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I managed to press install on the newest update, 4.4.4 on my Nexus 5. It was rooted and still is, but by installing this OTA it somehow made it crash. Now that I try to get into recovery mode I just get the android which is dead with an ! on it. It was rooted with Xposed and TWRP.
What do I do? Im on a Mac

OTA removed root replaces recovery. I'm amazed it managed to replace recovery whilst Xposed was installed. Anyway, seems like it did.
You must fastboot flash a custom recovery

The same really. Install fastboot and use the "fastboot flash recovery /pathto/your/recovery.img" command

[Q] Best way to root?

So guys, what way should I use to root in your opinions, there are a couple that I know of, cm auto root, using adb, and recently TowelRoot (not sure if it works with 4.4.3)....but please share your opinions, and I probably need recovery too so share about that as well...

You cannot root with adb. fastboot is the best way to root It gives you the necessary tools and understanding required to not only root, but also fix your phone if you fubar.
Look for stickies in General
if you have drivers installed properly then extract this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6cfqp9uvgzclbk4/Platform_Tools_Nexus.7z
download a recovery ( .img) and put inside that folder
open terminal there (shift+right mouse button>>>select open command prompt here)
reboot the nexus into fastboot mode, connect and type this
fastboot devices
(to see if nexus is connected)
and flash the recovery through fastboot
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
reboot into recovery
and flash supersu from chainfire

Also, if your recovery image was Philz, you can just root directly from the Philz recovery menu

I keep SU.zip in a folder on my phone. I flash it everytime I flash a new ROM

Yes if you're imeediately going to flash a ROM, no need to root your current rom. Just unlock the bootloader, flash recovery then from recovery flash a rom
Official CWM itself is pretty antiquated. The choice is between Philz advanced CWM (See signature) or TWRP and it is users preference really.

Btw I agree to some of what you said in other posts about rooting with adn without PC. Its great to be able to root easily but this in my opinion would make everyone root and stuff while I think rooting and Roms should be for android enthusiasts and what else.
Alright decided to go with cf auto root, pretty simple to go with and no need to flash recovery..
It is very easy but sometime try doing it manually it will be handy to learn the basic fastboot commands in case you softbrick your device which if your a flashaholic like me it will happen I've owned this phone three months I've softbrocked it 5 times

where twrp.img is the name of the recovery that you downloaded and not twrp.img

Yes i know but i would like to do it from the phone... There are tons of flash recovery apps but no boot recovery apps
ROM manager used to do it years ago until people got into trouble with it and it was removed.
If you intend on flashing things AMD backing up, flash a recovery. If you're not willing to flash a recovery, don't modify your phone

The problem with flashing is that you loose the ota update ability. That's why i would like to keep the stock recovery and just boot into cwm when i need it... But i guess i can restore the stock recovery via flashify before the ota is being installed so thats a solution... I just dont like flashing this stuff via apps

1) you do not lose OTA update ability with custom recovery. Read "OTA help-desk" available via my signature
2] what's the big deal about OTA? Its the worst way of updating available to everyone. Why bother? If you rely on OTA, remain unrooted, unmodified. Rooting is not for you.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Ugh lol OK, so worried about the ota? No worries, flash whatever recovery you want twrp, cwm, philz whatever floats your boat. Then when your ota comes out use Rashr to reflash stock recovery so you can update(you have to be on stock obviously).
I've done this numerous times, works every time.

One of the problems with OTA is the slow delivery and partial nature.
If I wasn't rooted, i'd always update using factory images. But since I am, the best way is for flash a pre-rooted stock ROM via recovery. They're usually available within an hour of the factory image becoming available

Agreed 100%, I normally stay rooted, this most recent preview though I'm staying stock. After running L for the last couple months its hard to go back to KitKat(I've tried several times). I have no intention of flashing another rom atm, I'll worry about root after the 3rd.
As for buddy worrying about the ota, really you have two choices.
#1 root and flash a recovery then wait for someone to post a root stock ROM
#2 wait for the ota
The only real benefit I see in waiting for the ota is you will probably get to keep all your apps on your phone. Me personally? I'd just fastboot the preview and wait till the 3rd.

[Q] Help for Rooting.

Hi all.
Can anyone lend a hand to help me get my phone rooted again? I had originally rooted it when it first turned up, by using the guide on these forums. Since then I (stupidly) did the OTA upgrade not thinking about losing root. I went from 33r to 38r. The first I knew was when Titanium back up wouldn't back up.
My problem is that neither of my computers (desktop - XP) (Laptop - Windows 7) will now see my phone. They will both make a sound when connecting via the USB cable but neither of them show the phone via My Computer. I've un-installed/installed the drivers again and I have tried putting the phone in Fastboot and clicking on Unlock Bootloader, via the Toolbox V3, but the phone will only "reboot" to the home screen. I'm needing a bit of help from someone who knows what they are doing
Thanks in advance for any help... Foz
Once you unlock the bootloader, I don't think you need to unlock it again. If you lose root after an OTA, I think all you need to do is reflash superuser from recovery. And don't touch those toolboxes. They don't help you learn to solve these problems by yourself.

I think your problem may be that when you installed the OTA, you also clobbered any custom recovery that was there. Next time, uncheck the option to install recovery.

no flash twrp or any custom recovery in adb and then you can flash the root zip.
I'm following this guide for rooting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788632 .
I'm assuming that I'm doing things ok to a point, as the CMD prompt is saying adb version is 1.0.32 but when i put the phone in fast boot, and type "fastboot devices" the phone will show up in the cmd prompt. Its when I "fastboot oem unlock" and"fastboot reboot", the phone will reboot as normal. No setting up of the phone. All my apps and settings are still there, indicating to me that something is wrong :/
I'm assuming that my drivers are ok otherwise I wouldn't be seeing the above in the cmd prompts but...
Can someone tell me if my mobile should show up in "my computer" ? it has in the past, but no longer does. and I'm wondering if this could have someing to do with my problems??
Thanks again..Foz
If your rooted, you have already unlocked the boot loader unless you relocked it. Did you? If not don't worry about unlock and flash custom recovery and flash supersu zip

I'm (wrongly) assuming bootloader needed unlocking again after the ota update because twrp would not install again. I assumed the whole phone needed all 3 processes to gain root again.

The bootloader shouldn't lock again unless you do it yourself. The recovery (unnecessarily because you can uncheck the 'update cm recovery' option in Developer Options to keep your custom recovery) and root (no way around it) are lost during the OTA but the bootloader should remain unlocked. What response do you get when issuing the following command?
Code:
fastboot oem device-info
Please paste the results here.

[Q] Backup won't restore.

So I installed the lateat CM12 nightly, wasn't really impressed yet and went to go restore my backup and once it's done restoring, it get stuck at the bootscreen animation. Just keeps going and going abs going. I used the latest cwm touch recovery as CM12 is not compatible with MultiROM. I would just flash the factory img back but my computer decided to it doesn't ever want to recognize adb avid fastboot on Linux.

You're on a custom Rom. The ota isn't going to work. And you don't need to relock your bootloader. If you can afford to wipe your data download the 5.0.1 factory image. Extract it and use the flash-all.bat

Well, unfortunately, there isn't a 5.0.1 flashable rom available right now. If you can't get fastboot to work on your Linux machine you're kind of sol as you need to be 100% stock to get the ota to work. That means stock recovery in your case. Google recovery zip collection xda. There's a custom recovery flashable stock recovery there.

There's a flushable zip on here also. Put it in a search in the app and you should come across it. It IS the full version.
Did you ever find out why the CWM restore led to getting stuck on boot animation??
Just ran into this last night. Tried restoring 2 different CWM backups and both got stuck on boot animation.
I eventually got a new ROM flashed. Going to try TWRP recovery I suppose.
I know I never had this problem with 4.4, this was the first time I have restored a LP ROM..

My guess would be; cwm hasn't been optimized for Lollipop. Cyanogen has just recently started working on 5.0 and they probably haven't touched the recovery too much. But that's just my guess.

This is true, I guess u could also manually add the font using twrp and the included file manager, u would have to set permissions as well but it would work, didn't think about that, but again, that's assuming he's rooted or at the very least has an unlocked bootloader so he can flash the recovery

Well if he currently doesn't have twrp installed he's going to have to flash twrp first, and the only way to do that if he isn't rooted already is by using fastboot or a Toolkit of some kind, its a very simple process just:

I meant not being able to "fastboot boot (custom recovery)"
I do it all the time on many devices, so was curious why you mentioned it would boot stock recovery. Always boots twrp when I use it, but I have never tried it on M so was wondering if something changed.

Oh no I was only saying that if he had never installed twrp on the device the fastboot boot recovery command would only boot the stock recovery. If twrp was installed prior tho it would boot twrp like u said

What he said only makes sense if that's the case.
Still, I find it hard to believe that if I 'fastboot boot twrp.img', TWRP won't run.

Mate, let's clear this up:
EVEN if you don't have TWRP installed, and you do 'fastboot boot <twrp-2.x.x.x.img', the device WILL boot into TWRP, WITHOUT flashing.

Twrp still needs to be on the device in order to boot it, u don't necessarily need to flash it, but if twrp is not on the device, how can it boot twrp? I've never booted it without flashing it, so I may be wrong, but I don't see how u could boot an image that's not there lol

What I'm saying is if twrp has never been on the device to begin with, fastboot can not boot an image that was never there, it can't be cached to memory if it was never in memory, the only way I could see to do this would be to do
fastboot flash recovery "twrp.img"
fastboot boot recovery "twrp.img"

Not stubborn l lol, just adamant ha-ha, u gotta know what I mean tho, I mean how can u boot an image that isn't there, now if u mean dl the image to the device and then boot it without flashing it that's doable, but the image still had to be on the device in order to boot it, flashed or not

It is booted via fastboot from you computer. I have done this a bunch of times on devices that have never and still don't have twrp. Download a recovery you have never used onto your pc and try.
