Phone powers off when using camera flash - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I use the camera and have the flash on, and the battery is less than about 75% charged, the phone shuts off and won't turn back on until I pull the battery.
Often, when the phone powers back up after this, it shows the battery is almost dead, or at least significantly lower than before - I've seen it go from 70% to 15% a few times after this. It's done this with every ROM I've had, including stock Gingerbread and ICS, but it used to only do it if the battery was close to dead. Now I pretty much can't use the flash unless it's fresh off the charger or plugged in.
I'm thinking the battery is shot, would I be correct in this assumption? If so, can I use any Nexus S battery, or do I need to use a 4G specific battery? It's the Sprint 4G model.
Thanks!

If anyone cares, I got a new battery. Camera now works reliably, and I now get more than 6-8 hours out of a charge. Snagged the Anker 1600 mAh battery from Amazon.

While I was out today (about 3 hours), 4G was on, and I had music streaming as well. Running JellyBean (CM10 Experimental) with Air Kernel @ 1.2 GHz.
Think it's safe to say my battery was shot - it was a Sprint-branded battery that came with the phone, but I got it used, and the person I got it from last year got it as a refurb.

When was the last time u reset battery stats in the old battery since its supposed to be done at least every time u flash a new ROM or if in same ROM for some time do it about once each month....
And what ROM where u using and what camera ..... stock or market APP?

One of the Google developers came out awhile back and stated there's no reason to reset battery stats, ever. TWRP 2.2 doesn't even have the option anymore. Plus the phone kept powering off when I'd use the flash on the old battery.
I'm using Burns' CM10 Experimental (8/6) with Air Kernel, but I've had this issue with every rom, including stock (as stated in the OP). Problem happened with stock camera app and every 3rd party camera app, also happened if I used the LED as a flashlight. When it's happening across multiple ROMs, I think it's a safe bet to say it's a hardware problem.

..

The phone was a refurb that I bought used, and came with a Sprint-branded battery when I bought it. But yeah, I was basically asking someone to verify what I was thinking - which you just did.
Here's the battery it came with:
Anyway, several days on the Anker battery now, and no complaints at all. Battery life is easily tripled, though this screenshot was taken with me sitting on wifi all day. It seems to hit 70-80% about when the old battery would die. Remember I'm running an early experimental build of CM10, with a mild overclock.

[Q] CM7 Alpha 6 on Sensation, poor battery life

Hi there!
so i decided to install CM7 alpha 6 on my sensation and ive been trying it it for 2-3 days (had alpha 5 before) and well the first day i recalibrated the battery after charging it to 100% and ... it went REALLY well!
i even Overclocked the phone with SOME kernel i found on the thread (sorry im not great with kernels or understanding them, i just know i use them to overclock but i made sure to know it was intended for CM7 use) and everything was still fine and dandy.
However i installed the radio that was suggested with the CM7 installing tutorial, not knowing what it did but i did it for compability issues i guess?, and the battery started shooting dead way too fast! like 1% every 5 mins or so. Now i read that the radio is pretty important for battery consumption so maybe by installing the new one i ****ed it up.
1) is there any way to revert back to my original radio? I live in Puerto Rico and 90% of the time at home i get EDGE because i dont get 3g here so i use Wi-FI calling and i do get 4g alot and good signal strength while not at home... the battery status displays my strength as yellow-green, 10% of the time its perfectly green. So maybe the radio i installed was an issue?
2) maybe its because CM7 still in Alpha stages and the battery isnt that great, or how is the battery for you guys? Did you mess with the radio?
3) Maybe its my battery i have an Anker1900mAh and it was doing just fine with ANDROID REVOLUTION getting 13 Hours of Medium - High usage during the day and i did do the 5 100-0% cycles throughout the first days... although i did clear the battery stats alot between the rom switching, maybe its ****ed with it?
i really like CM7 and i wanna keep giving it a try but if i dont get some options here i guess ill have to revert it back.
Sidenote: I also installed CM7 on my mothers MOTO CLIQXT and its been 2 days and she noticed that the battery is draining way fast as well. Didnt upgrade her radio though.
EDIT: i apologize for my terrible spelling and grammar

Also since I've been messing around with the battery stats and calibration this keeps happening and it won't show me the battery information. Any idea on how to fix this?
I am getting horrible battery life as well. I flashed their suggested radio. Gonna try flashing another radio and see if it helps.
i got a very bad battery life since i installed mike1968 3.6.0XE, a half day with the battery and then i have to charge it again. and i dont have wifi on or playing games, auto sync is also off. i like the rom but the battery life really sucks. i ordered a new battery and hopefully it will be better, it is the battery used for the Evo 3d.
Each time you change a ROM, you need to calibrate it by letting it charge to some 4.12v or so, and then let it discharge until the phone turns off. Try to turn the phone back on. If you can, wait for the battery to drain far enough such that the phone will NOT restart. Now charge the battery until it is 4.12v (not JUST 100% )
Do this a few times and youll notice better life. Also, WIFI DOESNT use battery that much when compared to data and phone calls. Use wifi whenever possible AND turn off anything that uses background data. Notifications and automatic reports/data collection all use data/wifi and will use your battery even when the phone is idle.
Check your standby current. It ought to be in the 10-50mA/Hr range. If its not, then you have rogue apps that ARE using battery.

Terrible Battery Life underclocked on GB

I can't get more than 1.5 hours screen on time without draining my battery. I did a full wipe and clean install of Bugless Beast with GlaDOS kernel and I'm underclocked to 880 MHz. 1.5 hours screen time and maybe 20 minutes talk!!! What's going on here?! Does anybody have a clue what' wrong with my phone?
I would first try another ROM, close to stock I would suggest Oxygen 2.3.2 with the stock kernel if you want to stay on GB. If it still drains your battery that fast your battery may be dying. If it lasts waaaay longer you'll know there's something wrong with your ROM and/or Kernel combo...
You can try ReCaliberating your Battery, but it probably won't help, your battery could be screwed up... Try getting a new one if you can and see what happens?

Great advice I was going to suggest Oxygen too, but version 2.3.1 instead, because for many people including myself 2.3.2 was not as stable.
I used Oxygen 2.3.1 coupled with glados, used to have 30 hours+ on a single charge.
Please check if your phone signal is always weak. Weak signals eat your battery up since the phone works harder to stay connected.
As the guys also suggested wipe the battery stats. download battery calibration from the market and fullow instructions.
Gd luck
I just ordered a new battery though... not a stock one but it was rated high on Amazon.

It's probably because Sprint's network sucks and your phone is dying while trying to find a damn signal from their crappy network. When I'm out and about, my phone lasts about half as long with the same usage. If I'm at home and connected to WiFi, I'll have great battery life.
just wanted to know y would u underclock ur phone?? wouldnt that make it slow???
try nexusshacks.com... great roms..

Not really. And as far as the network connection about 10% of the time I'm without a signal according to my battery stats. I don't know if that would drain it that much.

Strange charging issues

When charging on AC, the app current widget only shows it charging at less than 200mA. I've never seen it get higher than 385mA on either AC or USB.
Shouldn't it be a little closer to 1A when on AC? like 800's or so?
Excuse to have sprint replace it?:good:
Ghetto screenshot is attached.
Well on my doubleshot and the stock charger after it gets up to 100% it will actually go in the negatives to not overcharge the battery, maybe the speedy is doing something like that, but a little bit different

Back to update this thread a little.
We ended up getting a new battery from sprint, but the problem remains. It charges to "100%", but after 1.5-2 hours of sitting idle, it will be down to 40-50%, but once it gets that far it seems to hold it's own and will last a good portion of the day.
Battery stats have been wiped a few times after charging to "100%". So far I've tried NEWsense and AOKP, both behave the same. I also tried a few different chargers too with the same result, even tried different wall outlets. HOWEVER, it seems to charge and stay charged only if it's plugged into a computer.
I'm now thinking this is more of a HW issue rather than a SW issue like I originally thought.
Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this before?
Now it sounds like a deep sleep issue. Something is keeping your processor running how many apps are installed? Try an app called CPUspy so you can see how the processor is being used, also check the governor to make sure its not set to performance
Sent from my HTC MyTouch 4G Slide running MikTouch
It happened both on fresh installs of NEWsense and AOKP. Only app that was installed was facebook. The issue was happening even before installing facebook. Checked the governor and set it to ondemand for both roms right away, on install, it was set to performance.
I don't think it did this on stock 2.3.4, but I'd have to verify that with my wife to be sure.

So I powered the phone down last night and connected the charger. The battery was at 21% when I powered it off. When I looked at it this morning, 7 hours later, the LED was still amber and when it powered up it was at 96%.
I'm going to try keeping it off and charging it until the light turns green, then I'll see what happens from there.
EDIT: I got sick of waiting for the light to turn green. I powered the phone on and it's only at 97%!! After almost 2 hours of AC charging with the phone off, it only went up 1%? Something is not right.
Sounds like something is definitely up. I noticed in your first Pic that your Battery says it's only a 1450mAh Battery. The Shift Battery is supposed to be a 1500mAh Battery. You said you got a new one from Sprint, is it 1500mAh ? What Recovery are you using ?

[Q] AT&T Nexus S - Insane battery drain for no apparent reason?

I have had this Nexus S for nearly two years and recently I ran into an issue with the battery draining BIG TIME for no apparent reason. With any sort of use, the phone will die in 1-2 hours. If it sits by idly doing absolutely nothing, it will go from 100% to dead in ~6 hours.
It is bone stock - never been rooted. It's running on 2.3.4 GB at the moment. I have completely wiped it and set it to factory default. There are no apps installed, no accounts synced up but the drain continues. I even swapped it with a brand new battery and it still does this. Would anyone happen to know what I can do to fix the issue? The phone does have a few scuffs but it has never been severely dropped or gotten wet. It seems to have just started doing this on it's own.
This is the phone after a 100% charge and full wipe. It put it next to me and did not touch it at all. It was down to 50% after about 4 hours.

I'm no expert, but it looks like you don't have WiFi connected, and from your picture it appears that your cell signal is so weak that its only intermittently connected. When the cell radio has to work that hard constantly to maintain a connection, it will drain the battery very quickly.
On the other hand, if you're stock and unrooted, the phone should be prompting you to update the OS to 2.3.6, then 4.0.4., then 4.1. Any of those may cure whatever is currently ailing it.

I have checked, there are no updates. I think AT&T pushes them out. The phone is stuck on 2.3.4 either way.
There is no SIM card in it. It is not looking for a network at all. True, WiFi is turned on but I seriously doubt that it would drain battery from 100% to 0% in a matter of hours with the screen totally off.

[Q] Poor Battery life?

I've been getting pretty bad battery life on my GS3 lately. I'm not sure if it's because of the ROM, widgets, kernel, or what.
I'm running the LiquidSmooth Rom on a 4.2.2 version of Android with the stick Kernel of 3.0.66-cyanogenmod-g3e56399
Also running This custom Home Screen.
Here are some of the readouts of my battery life so far. Earlier today I had lost about 10% battery life after an hour or so, and that was only with 10 minutes of screen time.
I also have the brightness set to Auto or set to a low level manually. It's rarely higher than 30% brightness.
Album here in case the embedded images don't work.

Any ideas what I could do? Should I revert to stock and start over? I'm already using JuiceDefender Ultimate so I feel like my battery life should be MUCH better than it currently is.
I think that's the only way you're truly going to be able to tell. I'd try odining back to stock to get everything back in order then going to CleanROM. It's been reported that it has the best battery life for all GS3 ROMs.
If the problem still persists then yes it's your battery but I doubt it. With the n**rig of a setup you got going I'm willing to bet it's that.
Or on the contrary you could buy a brand new battery and try it out. Never hurts to have a spare battery around.
BTW, idk if it's just me but none of your imgs work.

Thanks for the reply. I put a link to the imgur album since the embedded images didn't work, it's just some battery status. I'll try doing what you said and Odining back to stock, then going to CleanRom and seeing how that goes.
A lot of the AOSP roms and kernels drop down from 100% really quickly but then don't drop that much after that. So when I see you're at 85% or so after 3 hours, that doesn't really surprise me. I would be willing to bet it doesn't drop as much for the rest of the day. I've just noticed that with AOSP, even back when I was on the DINC and like Cyanogenmod 7.
I'm on AOSP (Paranoid Android) on my GSIII right now, I haven't done anything with my phone today other than a text message or two. It's been unplugged for several hours and it's at 93%. So the early battery drop is just normal on AOSP.
