I've been getting pretty bad battery life on my GS3 lately. I'm not sure if it's because of the ROM, widgets, kernel, or what.
I'm running the LiquidSmooth Rom on a 4.2.2 version of Android with the stick Kernel of 3.0.66-cyanogenmod-g3e56399
Also running This custom Home Screen.
Here are some of the readouts of my battery life so far. Earlier today I had lost about 10% battery life after an hour or so, and that was only with 10 minutes of screen time.
I also have the brightness set to Auto or set to a low level manually. It's rarely higher than 30% brightness.
Album here in case the embedded images don't work.

Any ideas what I could do? Should I revert to stock and start over? I'm already using JuiceDefender Ultimate so I feel like my battery life should be MUCH better than it currently is.
I think that's the only way you're truly going to be able to tell. I'd try odining back to stock to get everything back in order then going to CleanROM. It's been reported that it has the best battery life for all GS3 ROMs.
If the problem still persists then yes it's your battery but I doubt it. With the n**rig of a setup you got going I'm willing to bet it's that.
Or on the contrary you could buy a brand new battery and try it out. Never hurts to have a spare battery around.
BTW, idk if it's just me but none of your imgs work.

Thanks for the reply. I put a link to the imgur album since the embedded images didn't work, it's just some battery status. I'll try doing what you said and Odining back to stock, then going to CleanRom and seeing how that goes.
A lot of the AOSP roms and kernels drop down from 100% really quickly but then don't drop that much after that. So when I see you're at 85% or so after 3 hours, that doesn't really surprise me. I would be willing to bet it doesn't drop as much for the rest of the day. I've just noticed that with AOSP, even back when I was on the DINC and like Cyanogenmod 7.
I'm on AOSP (Paranoid Android) on my GSIII right now, I haven't done anything with my phone today other than a text message or two. It's been unplugged for several hours and it's at 93%. So the early battery drop is just normal on AOSP.

Hi there!
so i decided to install CM7 alpha 6 on my sensation and ive been trying it it for 2-3 days (had alpha 5 before) and well the first day i recalibrated the battery after charging it to 100% and ... it went REALLY well!
i even Overclocked the phone with SOME kernel i found on the thread (sorry im not great with kernels or understanding them, i just know i use them to overclock but i made sure to know it was intended for CM7 use) and everything was still fine and dandy.
However i installed the radio that was suggested with the CM7 installing tutorial, not knowing what it did but i did it for compability issues i guess?, and the battery started shooting dead way too fast! like 1% every 5 mins or so. Now i read that the radio is pretty important for battery consumption so maybe by installing the new one i ****ed it up.
1) is there any way to revert back to my original radio? I live in Puerto Rico and 90% of the time at home i get EDGE because i dont get 3g here so i use Wi-FI calling and i do get 4g alot and good signal strength while not at home... the battery status displays my strength as yellow-green, 10% of the time its perfectly green. So maybe the radio i installed was an issue?
2) maybe its because CM7 still in Alpha stages and the battery isnt that great, or how is the battery for you guys? Did you mess with the radio?
3) Maybe its my battery i have an Anker1900mAh and it was doing just fine with ANDROID REVOLUTION getting 13 Hours of Medium - High usage during the day and i did do the 5 100-0% cycles throughout the first days... although i did clear the battery stats alot between the rom switching, maybe its ****ed with it?
i really like CM7 and i wanna keep giving it a try but if i dont get some options here i guess ill have to revert it back.
Sidenote: I also installed CM7 on my mothers MOTO CLIQXT and its been 2 days and she noticed that the battery is draining way fast as well. Didnt upgrade her radio though.
EDIT: i apologize for my terrible spelling and grammar

Also since I've been messing around with the battery stats and calibration this keeps happening and it won't show me the battery information. Any idea on how to fix this?
I am getting horrible battery life as well. I flashed their suggested radio. Gonna try flashing another radio and see if it helps.
i got a very bad battery life since i installed mike1968 3.6.0XE, a half day with the battery and then i have to charge it again. and i dont have wifi on or playing games, auto sync is also off. i like the rom but the battery life really sucks. i ordered a new battery and hopefully it will be better, it is the battery used for the Evo 3d.
Each time you change a ROM, you need to calibrate it by letting it charge to some 4.12v or so, and then let it discharge until the phone turns off. Try to turn the phone back on. If you can, wait for the battery to drain far enough such that the phone will NOT restart. Now charge the battery until it is 4.12v (not JUST 100% )
Do this a few times and youll notice better life. Also, WIFI DOESNT use battery that much when compared to data and phone calls. Use wifi whenever possible AND turn off anything that uses background data. Notifications and automatic reports/data collection all use data/wifi and will use your battery even when the phone is idle.
Check your standby current. It ought to be in the 10-50mA/Hr range. If its not, then you have rogue apps that ARE using battery.

Do you or anyone know what is the original Radio that TMO uses for the sensation (USA)?
I can't get more than 1.5 hours screen on time without draining my battery. I did a full wipe and clean install of Bugless Beast with GlaDOS kernel and I'm underclocked to 880 MHz. 1.5 hours screen time and maybe 20 minutes talk!!! What's going on here?! Does anybody have a clue what' wrong with my phone?
I would first try another ROM, close to stock I would suggest Oxygen 2.3.2 with the stock kernel if you want to stay on GB. If it still drains your battery that fast your battery may be dying. If it lasts waaaay longer you'll know there's something wrong with your ROM and/or Kernel combo...
You can try ReCaliberating your Battery, but it probably won't help, your battery could be screwed up... Try getting a new one if you can and see what happens?

Great advice I was going to suggest Oxygen too, but version 2.3.1 instead, because for many people including myself 2.3.2 was not as stable.
I used Oxygen 2.3.1 coupled with glados, used to have 30 hours+ on a single charge.
Please check if your phone signal is always weak. Weak signals eat your battery up since the phone works harder to stay connected.
As the guys also suggested wipe the battery stats. download battery calibration from the market and fullow instructions.
Gd luck
I just ordered a new battery though... not a stock one but it was rated high on Amazon.

It's probably because Sprint's network sucks and your phone is dying while trying to find a damn signal from their crappy network. When I'm out and about, my phone lasts about half as long with the same usage. If I'm at home and connected to WiFi, I'll have great battery life.
just wanted to know y would u underclock ur phone?? wouldnt that make it slow???
try nexusshacks.com... great roms..

Not really. And as far as the network connection about 10% of the time I'm without a signal according to my battery stats. I don't know if that would drain it that much.
If I use the camera and have the flash on, and the battery is less than about 75% charged, the phone shuts off and won't turn back on until I pull the battery.
Often, when the phone powers back up after this, it shows the battery is almost dead, or at least significantly lower than before - I've seen it go from 70% to 15% a few times after this. It's done this with every ROM I've had, including stock Gingerbread and ICS, but it used to only do it if the battery was close to dead. Now I pretty much can't use the flash unless it's fresh off the charger or plugged in.
I'm thinking the battery is shot, would I be correct in this assumption? If so, can I use any Nexus S battery, or do I need to use a 4G specific battery? It's the Sprint 4G model.
Thanks!
If anyone cares, I got a new battery. Camera now works reliably, and I now get more than 6-8 hours out of a charge. Snagged the Anker 1600 mAh battery from Amazon.

While I was out today (about 3 hours), 4G was on, and I had music streaming as well. Running JellyBean (CM10 Experimental) with Air Kernel @ 1.2 GHz.
Think it's safe to say my battery was shot - it was a Sprint-branded battery that came with the phone, but I got it used, and the person I got it from last year got it as a refurb.
When was the last time u reset battery stats in the old battery since its supposed to be done at least every time u flash a new ROM or if in same ROM for some time do it about once each month....
And what ROM where u using and what camera ..... stock or market APP?
Vs Nexus S 4G on Tapatalk

One of the Google developers came out awhile back and stated there's no reason to reset battery stats, ever. TWRP 2.2 doesn't even have the option anymore. Plus the phone kept powering off when I'd use the flash on the old battery.
I'm using Burns' CM10 Experimental (8/6) with Air Kernel, but I've had this issue with every rom, including stock (as stated in the OP). Problem happened with stock camera app and every 3rd party camera app, also happened if I used the LED as a flashlight. When it's happening across multiple ROMs, I think it's a safe bet to say it's a hardware problem.
..
The phone was a refurb that I bought used, and came with a Sprint-branded battery when I bought it. But yeah, I was basically asking someone to verify what I was thinking - which you just did.
Here's the battery it came with:
Anyway, several days on the Anker battery now, and no complaints at all. Battery life is easily tripled, though this screenshot was taken with me sitting on wifi all day. It seems to hit 70-80% about when the old battery would die. Remember I'm running an early experimental build of CM10, with a mild overclock.
..
I know this question should not be asked and I should try them all myself.
The thing is, I gave this phone to my gf, she loves it, however she's been having a lot of issues lately, and she's not android power user like me, so it's hard for her to fix things when I'm not around.
I've tried almost everything except "latest official".
I tried cm9 and it was good, but wifi/radio consumes ALL the battery in less than 3 hours. Deal breaker.
I tried valhalla final (whitehawx's from dec 2011), and it's been working ok but having lots of issues lately. Most noticeable is that apps will close themselves with no error. Even when going to make a call, the keypad closes itself to home screen, huge deal breaker. I remember this happening a lot when I used my phone. This doesn't seem to happen with cm9. Also, sometimes phone would hang, my gf reboots it and battery goes from wherever it was (>70%) to 3% after rebooting. She reboots using power+volup combo. Another huge deal breaker, and these things happen more often than you might think.
I tried galaxy S 4g beam, and I don't remember much what was wrong with it, except for battery which pretty much drained as fast as cm9. And phone takes AGES to boot completely, which is not a deal breaker, but the short battery life is.
So, it seems that my only option is to flash latest official and hope for the best. But before that I might try vallhala black edition.
What rom you guys use, for daily use that is bullet proof?
None are bulletproof. They are patched together from what little we know about the phone, trial and error and what ever sammy gives out, which is next to none along with the hard work of some dev's.
Battery life dropping from 70 to 3 sounds like a bad battery, not the ROM. If CM9 kills your battery in 3 hours (not 3 hours of full on high brightness screen time right), and other roms make the battery go from 70 to 3, I'm seeing the battery as the problem, not the ROM's.
This is an average for me on most CM9/AOKP based ROMS.

You're clearly doing something wrong either not wiping properly, or your battery is dying or something.
AntonX's Barebones is probably your best option.
Same situation
Hey, I was/am in the exact same position with my wife. Put CM9 on and it drained overnight while we slept. I looked around and tried Hefe Kernel v0.8.1. I can't post links cuz I'm still mostly lurking, but it's about midway down on the first page of the dev thread.
In any case, problem solved. She can go all day with lots of talk time, screen usage and facebooking. Hope this helps. It's never fun when gear doesn't work the way you want it to. Even worse when it's not working the way your significant other wants it to.

Hey man thanks! definitely going to try that!
I'll post back results.
My last test is Valhalla Final with bhudven's blast off 2.5 kernel so I could use voodoo sound. Doing good so far but battery is better than the AntonX basic with a twist. Running with SmartassV2 and deadline governor by default.

This doesn't feel right; as I recall from when the phone was new (and as I have seen others talking about), standby time is supposed to be great. Is this normal?
I'm flashing stock right now; I'll see if that helps.

Show us some BBS logs. Most likely CM issue though. More precisely, the CM kernel. But without BBS, it's just speculation.

Okay. I'll try this with stock Android and see what happens. If it's not better, I'll post BBS logs for it too.
I also think it's CM's fault, and if this happens with stock as well, you may have a faulty battery.
I usually get 1 hour SOT/20%, give or take 10 minutes.
I can get this with my usage patterns, obviously this is going to change (for better or worse) depending on how you use and configure your phone.

At any rate, after totally paving my device the drain seems to be better on M5. Not sure what the issue is/was.
