Waterproofing Electronics? - Captivate General

Lately I have been thinking of a DIY home waterproofing for my phone... I've been throwing around a couple of ideas after seeing the Liquipel website. Surely there must be something we can do to water-proof or water-resist our Cappy!?
I have a couple old phones which I am willing to experiment different processes on, and then dunk into water.
Does anyone have any ideas?

My first thought is covering the insides with some kind of varnish with the phone taken apart...

Varnish even if its less flamable when dry, may cause overheating. If you wait a few years this will surely become available to the public.

IMHO, with today's technology you can only make the Captivate water resistant ,,,,to a point. Due to the open headphone jack, micro USB connector, volume keys, power button, and removable battery - all with metal contacts - water proofing will not work if the phone is completely soaked. A better solution would be a one piece case that allows full use of the screen, volume, and power buttons. Plugged in headphone and usb connection would only work with the case off. But I don't know how big the market would be for such a case..Good Luck

Not to mention if u coat cappy it would over heat because water proof phone are not made to dissipate heat the way the cappy is

Liquipel uses nano technology to coat the inside and outside from water. It repels liquid hence the name. I am not sure why I didn't follow through with sending my sgs2 to them when I first got it since they are only 5 minutes from my work. My next phone will get it for sure. Their technology coats it so well that even the liquid sensors will always stay white and not get wet. They showed how to at one of the electronic conventions when they completely dunked it under water and let it sit there. I think I read they even took pictures with a phone under water while it was dunked.

Amazing how little you really know! There are many companies out there, that "waterproof" your electronic toy using nano technology! Google it and see for yourself!

Case-mate tough case

Hi all i would just like to share my experience with this case..Last week i had the unfortunate accident of dropping my Samsung galaxy s phone in the toilet at home...
The phone fell out of my pocket and straight in too the pan and finally landed in the u-bend.
The phone was in total water submersion for not more that 3-5 seconds..my heart fell to the floor...
I quickly grabbed the phone from the toilet..turned phone off and removed the battery..water was all inside the phone.
I shook the phone and lots of water came out..my thoughts at this time was phone was well and truly buggered.
I proceeded to dry the phone on my radiator at home..sim-card,sd-card,battery and back plate all removed to aide drying.
Left the phone to dry for a full 24 hrs...before attempting to turn phone back on.
There was condensation inside the phone which all dispersed after 24 hrs. of drying out the phone.
And the big moment arrived of putting the phone back together to see if it would ever work again....
My heart was pounding at this time hoping and willing the phone back to life..pressed the power on button and the phone came to life.
Apart from having to do a reset on the phone and re-installing all my apps there has been no problem with the phone working 100%.
Phone has been working for well over a week now with no problems.
How lucky was I??...Im not saying that the Casemate Toughcase is the be all and end all in cases but im sure it went some way in helping reduce the damage that would have been caused by water ingress in to the phone.
happy case hunting...
Ewwww That Dirty Samsung Galaxy S
Lol..must add the water in toilet was clean...
The tough case was not the parameter influencing the luck in this case. As long as the rear speaker hole is not sealed, the water will always have a way inside the phone, no matter how many shock protection layers you have o the phone.
And generally speaking, tap water is not dangerous for the electrical parts of low voltage powered devices (like watches, phones and so on). The main issue with phones dropped in water is that the water will infiltrate in the optical dispersers of the LCD screen and on the screen connectors, generating blurry pictures or no picture at all.
I've learned something from your experience ... the water will not go in between the OLED screen and the digitizer .. which is a GOOD thing.
Great! I'm glad your SGS survived!
just take more care of it, ok? and don't drop it on Sea Water!

I have toughcase as well. Not the prettiest case, the phone loses it's "luxury" feeling, but you can certainly throw around the phone no problem.
I dropped my Galaxy S (with Tough Case) today, it fell directly on my hard tiles floor at a height around 70cm. I was really freaked out! I picked it up and it was still there like nothing happened (no crash, no slow, no reboot, no nothing) really happy that I chose this case!
thanksss a lot for content

Liquipel: Waterproof your Charge.

So today at CES they announced the only thing i actually care about; Liquipel. What's Liquipel? Well thats a good question, reader! Liquipel is a coating you put on your smartphone that basically waterproofs the interior and exterior. Any water that touches the coated area will just slide off. Why should you care? Well, our beloved Droid Charge is among the small list of supported devices! Of course they will expand that list over time but it's nice to see our phone getting some attention by being first on the list.
Heres a video test of Liquipel.

This tech has a lot of potential, but I have to speak my skepticism. I watched their demo video showing an iPhone being submerged in water and still working. Seems all well and nifty, right? I highly doubt they would use anything but distilled water for their demo. Guess what, entire computer motherboards have been submerged in distilled water while in operation and lasted even over a minute. Distilled water is non-conductive. I suspect that a computer would continue operation in distilled water if the water, acting as a mild solvent (due to water's dipole moment) didn't dissolve some of the matter on the board like dust or chemicals.
While I would love to believe that this tech will pan out well, I will believe it when I see it for real. This tech, in my opinion, is almost certain to fail if a phone is submerged in salt-water.
I would love to be proved wrong, and I will be following this tech closely.
They should try urine just for better real world results. People like myself can speak from experience.

I wouldn't call this waterproof by any means. More like highly water resistant-just so that you aren't afraid to use it in the rain.
And xdadevnube, even distilled water conducts enough electricity to be plenty damaging to computers. Maybe you're thinking of mineral oil.

Distilled water, while being less conductive than most water, is still conductive. De-ionized water would be the least conductive, but still, itself is conductive. It may not be much, but it would still be enough to short out a computer or circuit board.
Sounds like a great idea, though I would be worried about scratchs that would possibly remove such a coating. That or if you remove your battery cover?
Only other thing is, if I have to send my phone into them, even if I overnight it, I'm out a phone for 2.x to 3.x days at least. Who can go without their cell phone for that long? I know I can't!

Thanks for the correction. I am rather curious how well the tech would hold up to both tap water and sea water though.
It would be a bummer to pay for the coating only to find our your device gets "hosed" from being exposed to water.
I wonder if the device could be protected from damage while the battery slowly discharged in the water (I presume the battery terminals will still leak current into the water.) So if you dropped your phone in a body of water until the battery was gone, then your device might still work after being allowed to dry?
Odds are that something besides the battery would short out first. Sea water would obviously be the worst as it is much more corrosive and conductive than tap water. Personally, even if I had this coating, I'd still treat my phone the same way and pull the battery immediately if it got into water, and then dry it out thoroughly before even thinking about putting the battery back in.

Exactly. This coating isn't really meant to let you play with your phone underwater or get cool underwater photos. You still shouldn't try to get it wet, this just adds protection in-case it does happen. Kinda like a case, it doesn't make your phone invincible, you could still get cracks and/or damage your phone from dropping it but it really helps.
This looks really cool, and promising! I'm not really hard on my phones and usually keep them dry and take good care of them... but this interests me for that extra level of protection.
Lets face it, water/liquid is one of the biggest killers of phones!
Can't wait to hear from someone on here that gets theirs done, it will be nice to see an independent report vs. mfg claims.
looked at their site, and I don't see it being worth the cost. If my phone gets wet and needs replaced, I can pay the same amount for an insurance replacement.

It ain't over till it's over.
I had the proverbial "Bad Day" yesterday, or rather, my poor Skyrocket did. It went from being perfect, not so much as a scuff on it to: a) Dropped onto my CEMENT driveway from a height of almost 6 feet. How is this possible, you may ask? I was leaning over the porch rail to open the recycling bin, instead of going around and down the stairs... PURE LAZINESS is what it was! Anyway, it slipped out of my top pocket, in spite of the fact that I was trying to hold it with my fore arm. Why of WHY did the Skyrocket have to be so slim and sleek! The phone hit the cement, bounced once or twice, and then slid, ON IT'S FACE about 3-4 feet, with me making that scream you do while breathing in; kind of a "Uuuoooaaarrrrggghhhh" is the best I can describe it. I followed this by grabbing the phone, taking it inside and throwing an ever loving **** fit. I proceeded to throw the phone on the couch (Even during a full blown hissy, I try to protect the damn thing!) and as I examined it, it was one of those "It could have been much worse" things, that we try to comfort ourselves with, and amazingly they do help, even if it's BS. The damage was 100% to the front black chrome bezel (around the front edge of screen) - A part that in fact CAN be replaced, but requires COMPLETE disassembly, including separating the Screen from the digitizer, which I have no clue how to do. It may NOT be possible, in fact without breaking a layer of adhesive. EVERY other part of the phone is replaceable, in modular sections, I know, and will explain in a moment.
So... bad day right... well that would had been enough since I love my phone as many folks on XDA understand, but nooooooo. I had to then drop it in 8 inches of standing water. Yep.
Was in the bottom of my above ground pool trying to restart a siphon for draining it, when, "SLIP" I %&*&#@ DID IT *@#&$% AGAIN!! *#$%&!!
Phone drops STRAIGHT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HALF FOOT OR SO WATER IN THE POOL!!!!!!!!
Ok, so I almost NEVER keep my phone on me when doing physical work of any type. When I work on my cars engine compartment, or crawling around under it, I put my phone in the car. Even when I dry my car after pulling out of the car was the phone gets taken OUT of my top pocket and put somewhere safe. I guess I got complacent, since I hadn't had "an incident" in several years. Even with my 5" Dell Streak, beast that it was, I never let it slip from my standard place of Top shirt pocket. Every time I lean forward, my hand or forearm holds the phone from slipping. It is a motion as natural to me as shifting while driving, without even thinking about it. But even I know that "**** happens" so, lesson learned: I am going to bite the bullet and get a nice slim cover for the Skyrocket. NOW THAT IT WORKS AGAIN....
So after I pulled it out of the water I was in full panic mode: I quickly patted it in my shirt, but even while it was still wet and dripping, I RIPPED the back cover and battery out. In hindsight, I wish I had worked to dry the exterior quickly, and THEN opened it. The battery liquid detector wen bright read... CRAP! The PHONE liquid detector stayed WHITE… Ahh, finally caught a break. So after a basic dry everything I can reach (and the Sim came out wet, and the microSD came out wet, not good signs) I tried a quick power up.... The SkyICE animation began, then suddenly changed colors and turned pink/red.. WHOA.. STOP THE BOOT! So I yanked the battery.
After quite a bit of further drying, warm gentle air across the back for a venturi effect (sure!) another try and the screen behind the Samsung logo was bright, blood red, instead of black...
THIS convinced me to take the sucker apart, and for the most part I did really well. I did break ONE tab on the "body" of the phone - that holds the back section over the PCB on, but fortunately there are 7 screws, and it fit tightly when reassembling. I DID frin s coupe drops of water, though they did not seem to be in spots that would short anything, like on the stainless cover over the Qualcomm Processor, but those were just what I could see, without magnification. I dried those, blew warm gentle air over the PCB, and then gently warmed the parts over a low wattage bulb in a lamp.
I am SO impressed with the construction of this baby! I WOULD prefer more alloy, and less plastic for frame, shell & body parts, but what AMAZED me were the connections for all the ribbon cables, between modular PCB's (Like the one on the bottom with a antenna, USB port, Speaker, Mic and capacitive touch buttons, and others... The ribbon just comes around from behind, and attaches via a snap in connection to a receptacle soldered onto the corresponding PCB. In the video of the guy taking it apart, he just goes around and pops up 5 or 6 of these in about 10 seconds total time elapsing. Anyway, check out the middle section of the video I post here, right after he pulls the rear frame off... you'll see...
Bottom line? It's maybe NOT too late for the OP... Granted the more he runs it with a short or worse, the more potential damage. But in my experience it is REALLY difficult to get ALL the water out of a current design phone. It just travels from section to section, His best option (besides either trashing it or paying for repairs is doing what I did. Parts are readily available from Hong Kong, and short of the Screen/Digitizer, most are reasonably priced. Good luck with it. Get a jewelers screwdriver, and a plastic "separator" before starting. My only warning: When separating the main frames, after removing the 7 screws holding the two main frames together, use a CURVED separator, and try to bend the frame that’s the back of the phone OUTWARD a little bit. In other words, pull it OUT as well as spreading the two halves. I did not have a curved plastic tool, just a straight one, and as I pulled the two halves apart, I did not bend it out (away from an inner opening, that tabs go into from the back frame, and I snapped one of the inner openings edges. Think of it as tiny tabs that you want to pull up out of a depression before pulling the parts directly away from each other.
Aww, hell, just watch the video closely, I repeated some sections a few times before trying the procedures.

Well, I dropped my skyrocket in water a couple days ago but fished it out instantly.
Learning from past mistakes, I immediately turned it off and took the battery, sim and memory card out. After I took a paper towel and tried to dry as many cracks and openings as possible until I saw I could not get any paper towel wet. I put the phone and battery in a sealed bag filled with rice and left it for 3 days. When I took it out, the phone was covered in rice dust so I took compressed air and tried to blow it clean. Praying it worked, I put the battery in and turned it on. Miraculously it booted like nothing ever happened.
I heard online to not use a hair drier as you will blow the water into components which were initially not wet.
"I heard online to not use a hair drier as you will blow the water into components which were initially not wet."
This. Definitely avoid hairdryers. Rice is like magic. I have only dumped one phone in water (it was an iPhone 3GS on and playing a video at the time! Then I had a hellish time getting it to turn off... kept turning back on.) I popped the screen and gave it a rice bath for a couple days. It was as good as new after that. (Well, as good as any iPhone can be, anyway. )

What, if any, issues/manufacturing faults did you experience with your Z3?

I wanted to create this topic because I am curious and because I see many people asking if this phone isn't too fragile or has QC issues. I believe that the people with problems are the vocal minority but the best way to find out is to have a poll.
So, have you found any faults or is your device right as a little (Xperia) ray of sunshine?
You can select more than one option.
1st phone: defective camera (purple noise)
2nd phone: USB flap misalign when closed
3rd and current phone: so far so good
My first phone's screen had an area in a line from top to bottom, right of centre that had no touch sensitivity. The area was about .5 cm wide.
I couldn't touch anything on the line or drag anything across it.
I contacted Amazon.co.uk and they sent me a new one right away. They also let me hang onto the defective one until the replacement arrived without charging me.
Awesome! thanks for the replies so far! Please keep them coming!
My phone is perfect. The USB flap is a teeny tiny bit, like a fraction of a milimeter, misaligned but the seal is intact, I do not intent to take my phone into the pool anyway and thought it was pointless to go through the hassle of returning an otherwise flawless phone for something half of my friends can't see when I point it out. My carpenters eye is ridiculously accurate so meh.
The back glass scratched a few hours after removing cover. Ive only has the phone for 2 days and Bell wont take it back with damages. The phone has only ever been in my otherwise empty pocket...
Anyone else experiencef this? I thought both were gorilla glass.
I don't think the back is as scratch resistant as the front, as I too have very minor scratches on the back, using front and back tempered glass protects now.
My unit only has a slight annoyance which is the headphone jack is wobbly. It has about less than 1mm of wiggle room. I can see a gap between the metal body and the Jack. The Jack works perfectly currently.
Don't know if it's worth bringing to the Sony store, or to just seal it with some super glue or something. :/
Took some underwater pictures at the aquarium, thought it'd be cool.

That's what I'm assuming. I could also hear air bubbles when squeezing my device... :/
It worked fine for a while, I even rinsed it off in the sink after exposing it to the water. (It was fresh water, but there were fish in it) No more than 6 inches submerged for like 30 seconds. Was going through the pictures and the touchscreen just stopped working.

In reality, from what I have read, some are not waterproof out of the box. So sad to hear this when Sony advertised this phone as waterproof. Before submerging, did you try the water test via software (pressure sensor)?

This really sucks because there is no way we can tell if it is waterproof until we really submerge it. I am going to avoid submerging mine at all cost.
Hi
I had some problems with this new phone.
1: no nfc working
2: horizontal section from 9 to 177 of the touchscreen doesnt work properly
So i get a third replacement by SFR (in France) and I think I get a fully working Z3.
I love the advertisement of Sony for ils Z3 in France : demand perfection (exigez la perfection)!
I've had 2 copper Z3's. First one, front glass shattered whilst in my front left pocket, nothing else in the same pocket. I've carried all my phones in the same manner and never had an issue. Also had the pink spot issue.
Second phone has 2 stuck pixels.
I really like the phone. They just don't like me
Got a replacement from T-Mobile, the camera button seems to be stuck.. Only works like 20% of the time. Instead of feeling like a dual stage button, it's just a single press with no tactile feel.
When in the camera app it either does nothing, or is stuck trying to focus repeatedly.
Has the same issue with the glass coming up on the back as well. Definitely feels and sounds as if adhesive it being "pulled apart" per se.
Also, the flaps seem to be a little mis-aligned.
My T-Mobile must have gotten a bad batch...
If you have a misaligned usb flap, will replacing the flap with a spare one fix it or is it an issue with the frame?
First one I got in store, noticed the power and volume up buttons were stuck and wouldn't click, the next one's speakerphone didn't work, now this one's camera button is stuck and doesn't have the two stage shutter and can't take photos in the stock app. I still prefer the phone over any other currently out.
Edit: I got mine through t-mobile.
UPDATE: The camera button has come unstuck and works fine now, though it does get a little stuck still.
Two display/screen issues :
- Screen burn-in all the time : status bar and home button more particularly. I strongly suspect a defective screen : I send my Z3 back to Sony, and they did... a software update ! I'm kind of curious about what they did exactly because my phone was completely updated. Of course, it didn't solve anything...
- Strange parasite lines surrounding text lines. Probably a software issue. I'm waiting Lollipop to see what it gonna do on my phone.
Sent mine in for a screen repair in the USA. Its a d6603 international version that is rooted and an unlocked boot loader stock. They just informed me that they cannot fix due to it not having the correct software and it not being a US phone.

Case with Covered USB Port?

Has anyone found a case for the Moto X Pure (Style) that has a covered USB port?
I bring my phone into the shower with me to listen to music, and I want to do whatever I can to prevent water from getting into the USB port. I know that the phone is somewhat water-repellent with its coating, but I'm guessing that frequent exposure to steam & water droplets will eventually corrode the MicroUSB port.

Neither are waterproof if the OP is taking his phone into the shower.
Either put in ziplock or why not just put the phone right outside of the shower on top of the sink, toilet bowl? Unless he's in like a locker room shower or dorm.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm goign to keep looking for another solution, because I'm always stuck between the desire to get drop / water protection that a case provides, and the bulk that the case adds.

Well, to clarify, I don't need water*PROOF*. The phone isn't getting submerged in water, or exposed to direct streams of water. My phone would sit on a ledge / shelf in the shower stall, for purposes of either playing music or videos while I shower. The water danger would be from droplets of water splashing into the micro USB port, and eventually corroding the metal contacts over time.
I'm actually thinking of looking for small rubber Micro USB port covers or plugs, that would simply make it hard for splashed water to get into the phone. I think between that, and the water-resistant coating on the phone, that it would be enough for the level of water exposure I'm looking to protect against.

The water danger would be from droplets of water splashing into the micro USB port, and eventually corroding the metal contacts over time. I'm actually thinking of looking for small rubber Micro USB port covers or plugs, that would simply make it hard for splashed water to get into the phone.

Just as a follow-up, I ended up getting a bunch of rubber plugs for the Micro USB port. Paid about $1.75 for 25 of these things, and they do the job. It will probably be a pain to keep losing them, but at least it gives me the dust & water protection that I want.
