Howdy - Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

Howdy, Blaze'rs... Finally was able to get an account here, (have sprint-virgin mobile for comp, and YES ITS A T-MOBILE BLAZE).
So my first question is... Will I be able to log in via comp & phone when I go home? IE. Back to Sprint and T-Mobile.
Second, Where do I start? Want to help with this phone, it is my very first cel (and am not going to tell you how old I am, but guess old enough to be some of you's grandpa ). And I am hooked.
I would like to learn to make apps and other cool thingies for this Blazing Hot Intelligent phone.
Anyway, be safe and have fun.
Cool beans... sprint works...

Welcome! Not sure I understand your first question unfortunately.
As far as where to start I would start here:

Welcome too our small, yet quite functional community.
Diving into development I'd no small task, but we all welcome anyone eager to learn.
With ics releasing here hopefully in the coming weeks, I think people may be more interested in this phone

Funny how things work out. That link is on my Bookmark Bar. Only thing missing there is how to make the LOGCAT, get 404 error. Got the Dumbies ADB ready to read.
But mostly was looking for a place to start helping. Am guessing, testing, as I can mess up a wet dream, so Documents for Dumbies helper too.
Anyway be safe and have fun. LOL Farmville is going to miss me!!!

Might want to check out this thread as well....

Howdy, Now I have a few ???
And my head hurts and eyes are sore. Been reading, then reading some more. Search this and that, and read again. Just for the mod of the XDA Forum New User guide... Re-using my first post thread, instead of starting a new one.
Ok, question that is driving me nuts. "Directory Structure". Is there a template (of sorts) for sgh-t769, that will tell me what all that "junk" in /acct, /efs, yada yada, is? So I have a better idea what I can play with. (yes, I have several IAmADumyDroid backups)
Main bak is freash virgin root, cwm. Secondary is just after frying "DarkNight".
What I am wanting to do is put a few of MY FAVORITE games and apps in the system then back it up, so I don't have to keep re-installing them after I go try out one of the other ROM's. Yeayea, get this backup app or tat one works better. No they don't.
I keep a copy of everything rar'ed on my comp. Play yyyy game a day. Find something else, then week latter go back to yyyy. Only thing I can't seem to bak is the bak program. And a few times while playing with the roms, to fix it back, I have hade to re-format the sdcard.
Next, there has to be a better way to get this stuff back and forth between comp and phone. USB cable is pain and that keis just plain xxxx the big one. I have laptop with virgin mobile usb inet stick thingie and this cool phone. No routers, no cable modem, no land line phone. Comp does have wifi but unless I pay the shell gas station to hook up for an hour oh well. Wifi tethering just lets me use the phone for the comp's inet. And found a program for the comp that lets me go the other way.
Well that is enough for now. Time to go read some more...
Be safe and have fun.

G Tablet coming tomorrow...would like to get some things set straight. Thanks.

Hey all,
I'm getting my G Tablet tomorrow and I'd just like to get some things clarified.
I know, the first thing some will say is USE SEARCH! Well, I did - and that's actually why I just want to get some things straight before I go down the path of modifying the device software. See, reading it all has managed to confuse me more than help me get a definitive instruction set for forging ahead.
I'm seeing the update "****s on CWM" according to a user...and then a 'fix' for that. Than I see that Gapps causes FCs for some, while it works for others. So...yeah, a little back and forth on what to do and who's instructions to follow.
Alright, so first thing's first....Should I flash the Clockwork Mod that I'm seeing available - 0.8? or is there something else I should consider or that I've missed? or maybe wait for a newer version? Should I even flash CWM if I get the newest (and I WILL be getting the newest) S/W version? Are there any downsides at all to flashing CWM on there in terms of messing with OTA updates, etc?
I read this:
"All the ROMS use a standard firmware updater that can be used by non-technical users. Here is an explanation on how it works:...."
Sooo, does that mean I can live without CWM? If an update doesn't work for some reason, will I be able to fix it or overwrite it somehow if I can't get into the tablet at all from the tablet itself? I read something about going into APX mode and putting things on through Windows, is this an infallible method?
Second of all, I read the FAQ thoroughly (I think and hope) but I'm still not 100% on what Gapps to DL or how to put a working Android Market on there especially with this new S/W update. I've seen how to 'fix' the Market to see missing apps, but not how to actually install it on the G Tablet. I may have missed that post somewhere on here.
I'm also unclear if I should get Gapps or not at all, as I've read that some have FCs on there while others do not - so what's the general consensus in light of this update that was just released as of Dec. 21, 2010?
Ultimately, here is what I'd like from my GTab:
I'd like to run the new official Tapn'Tap released recently first and foremost.
I'd like to have the official/unofficial (w/e) Google Market.
I'd like to run Google Apps (Gtalk, Gmail, etc.).
IF I don't like Tapn'Tap, and this is a worse case scenario situation, as in if I HATE TnT - I'd like to have the option to slap something else on there and I'd like to make sure I don't brick my Tablet. Whether that means storing an original official TnT ROM or whatever.
Point me in the right direction please, especially considering things may have changed as of the new S/W update.
Thanks much and sorry for all the questions. I assure you I used search and I attempted to put it together on my own. It's been a long time since I've modded (G1 was the last time) and I don't do it often. Also, apologies if I posted this in the wrong section....I considered posting it in Dev. section but this one seemed better suited.
Thanks again, XDA rocks.

I don't know how much direction pointing I can do but here goes..
Clockwork mod in my opinion is a necessity. Version 0.8 is the best one for most people because of how it deals with the memory locations. Yes, you can do things without it. The update process is as simple as putting an update.zip file, and a recovery folder with a command file in it on an sdcard and holding the vol + button while hitting power. It is easy. Clockwork has a lot of little features though that make life easier. You can make a complete system backup with it. You can install updates, and new firmware with it. You can completely lock up your tablet and using clockwork and your backup be back in business in about 3-4 minutes. You can load new roms and if you hate them you can go back to your old working stuff in minutes. Yes, there are ways to make one of these tablets work again when they get stuck. I don't think anyone has actually bricked one. Some may think they have, but I doubt it.
Unless you are dead set on wanting the stock TnT interface the easiest way to get what you want is to load one of the roms. Yes, there are ways to get most of it without loading a new rom. Most everyone that has gone the I have to stay stock but want all the mods has eventually just loaded a rom. TnT3.0 is based on the latest stock stuff. It has the market, flash, etc. already in it. VegaN is what I use mostly but they are both stable and fast.
Before you flash something brand new that just came out I would read about it and see what others have to say about issues. It usually only takes about 30 minutes until you can tell if it is going to be good or not.
All of the roms for this tablet have there own little quirks. The stock has gotten better with each update but it still is not as good as the ones I named.
Finally.. This tablet is very easy to play with. It is pretty much unbrickable. Anything you can possibly break one of us has probably already broken before and fixed. There are some people that seem to have problems doing every little thing. Most don't. So I wouldn't let any of it scare you off because none of it is that hard.
With a little bit of searching almost everything you may want it to do can be done. I really love mine, and when I got it almost 2 months ago I hated it...

"Sigh" of relief. Then I'm not too worried. As I said I've dabbled in modifying my G1 and it is mostly cake. But I've just been seeing conflicting posts on whether cwm works with the newest official tnt release or not so I wasn't sure what to do.
Thanks for your advice. And when I said pointers, I meant like this as well as pointing me to any posts I may have missed on how to do whatever. Though I THINK I found most of them.

The new release overwrites clockwork. But it is not hard to put back. Always a good idea to copy the clockwork backups folder to your pc, or somewhere they won't be lost. The custom roms typically leave the recovery image alone and can be installed with or without clockwork by either extracting the zip contents for stock recovery, or installing it as is in clockwork.

I can vouch for that. Erased system, boot, data and cache in preparation for a new ROM. Accidentally rebooted and couldn't get into recovery. Booted it into APX mode, flashed stock and was on my way.
I would just run ZRoot, then upload the TnTLite 3.0 recovery and update.zip and then do the recovery mode process. You should have a microsd handy just in case it doesn't work, but so far I haven't needed that.
This tablet is much easier to work with and very forgiving since VS never took the time to lock down the bootloader etc like Motorola did with my Droid X. You really shouldn't fear changing files out etc, provided you're getting a ROM from one of the people providing them here. If you can press and hold two buttons at once, you can make your gTab an awesome little tablet. It benchmarks about 1000 points higher than my Droid X on quadrant. Can't wait to see what these guys can do with Gingerbread.

It is also not hard to alter the update so that it does not overwrite clockwork.
Open update.zip
Find updater-script, Open in notepad++
Remove the line that references recovery.img
Flash update

The very first time I rooted, I used ZRoot and installed 2.4.0. I didn't change anything and used the exact same process of simply copying over the 3.0.0 files over to the root directory of the internal memory and did the recovery procedure (vol+ and pwr keys). It worked like a charm.

My device hasn't come yet (damn you FedEx!) but I'm eagerly awaiting it.
My plan:
Unbox, start it....do a factory reset from the getgo if it has enough juice.
Set it back up. Charge it to full. If whatever comes on it is as unbearable as I've seen in on Youtube - start modifications.
Will CWM install on it AFTER I do the update if it's available to me? I've seen that the update messes with it if it's already there - but noone's mentioned putting it on there after the fact. I may just go that route for simplicity sake.
Thanks for this!, and thank you all for chiming in with your experience. I feel much better about just getting my hands dirty in it all. I had wrote something to someone yesterday about jumping in and just doing it, but when it comes to dealing with it yourself it can be a daunting task - especially when it still has that new smell, lol. Anyway, thanks again. You guys really rock.
Will stop back later on after I've done my thing
I think they are both nice devices. There are trade off for both of them. I think the screen on the iPad is wonderful, where the gTab's is okay. But the gTab has a forward facing camera, you can print from it, and you can modify it fairly easily too.

Seriously though...trust the directions from the great devs like roebeet. Follow their instructions word for word. You can switch ROMs and then flash back if you want. No worries...
Off topic!
Well...disappointment! Fedex had my package out for delivery at 8am and at 8pm, they're not here. This is why I like UPS, they show up at my door on the day of delivery, no exceptions - they have shown up at almost 9pm before. The Archos 101 I got was sent out at 8am as well but got here at 1:30pm - I suppose that was before the holiday rush.
Checking the details of my tracking I'm seeing a "delivery exception" at 7:30pm (I guess it was time to get back to the facility so they can clock out by 8pm?) and upon calling them I get a somewhat stumbling but polite CS who tells me the delivery went out "late" - upon which I asked if 8am was considered late, especially from a distribution facility WITHIN the same zip code as I am, and all he could say was "Very sorry about this".
Aaaanyway....I guess it will be tomorrow before I can report my adventures.
Think I'll be able to get my $3.99 back from Amazon? I have Prime and with that the package would have come tomorrow anyway. Basically my $3.99 is wasted. Imagine if I didn't have Prime though? Whew.

If you can figure out how to brick it you will probably get an award.. It won't be a good award but probably one of those top ten dumb things people do awards. So far unless you plug the motherboard into a wall socket no one has bricked one. May think they have, but like I said before I doubt it..
And your right.. If it can be done, someone eventually will figure out how. And then we will all laugh at them.. At least I will
I finally got the G tablet tonight and...alright, don't flame me for this - but I don't see what all the complaints about the screen being horrendous or the device being molasses slow are about?
I don't know how people are trying to view it...but when looking at it or setting it on a stand to watch media, I'm not seeing any problem with the viewing angles. It's about the same as my laptop so I watch it the same way.
It's not even a 1/4 as slow as the stuff I've seen on Youtube or in some of the review videos I've seen around the net. I haven't gotten a single FC. Granted, I haven't put in a SD Card yet so maybe problems will start then?
I guess I should note, the very first thing I did was did a factory reset. Then I hooked it up to Wifi and got the 3053 update. I'm one of those who will be waiting for the 'official' update on the 24th.
I set up the time and date, restarted and everything works. I haven't installed flash yet (don't need it that much) and stuff that I DO want on there right now works fine (skype, pandora, fring, dropbox, evernote). I'm slowly figuring out a list of what I want/need from my Mytouch 4G to port to the VS GTab. Figure I don't really NEED Gtalk, Gmail on there because I have these on my phone AND PC - do I really want them making noises all around my home on 3 devices? I was concerned about getting the Google Apps on but now I'm finding I really don't need them. So it seems to me this will be a matter of learning to separate what I need on a tablet vs. my phone - I was of the mentality that I should just get whatever's on my phone on the tablet, this is something others apparently do as they seem to want everything that's on their phone, on their tablets as well.
I personally don't see the point in that. Had I had the Google Market, that would have escaped me as I'd have used Appbrain to just get my motherload of apps from the MT4G to the GTab. Not having it has slowed me, and now I get to re-evaluate before I do grab apps for it.
Now I just have to merge/convert my HTPC into a NAS device as well and find an app that will allow me to DLNA stream media from it and I'll be in mobile heaven.
I haven't had my wifi drop at all anywhere in my home and I've marched all over with it (I use full Wifi N, no G compat. so maybe my range is wider?). Tried email, etc. to replicate crashes and force closes but haven't so far. No surfing issues. I DID find that one app got 'stuck' being downloaded and I had to delete the file before the 'downloading' icon would go away, even after restart.
Maybe the trick to getting a workable GTab in the first place is to factory reset it before first use? Iunno. Things may change and issues may pop up the more I use it and as time passes - but so far, so good!
Again, I can't thank XDA enough for the advice and info. I've found and been given.

I figured it out. Accidentally hit one of the devkit nvflash .cabs and boom

[Q] I need help.

Today, I acquired a infuse 4g, off contract. I wanted to mess around with android, as my current phone is an iphone, and maybe switch over.
One of the first things I tried to do was tether my iphone to my infuse using mywi. I soon discovered android doesn't work with ad hoc networks. I googled a couple fixes, and decided to try my hand. I have never touched android before. I found this thing that said I could. So I went for it. After reading a few guides, I decided the first step was to root it using superoneclick. That went fine. Then, I read the instructions and it told me to 'flash the zip file using a recovery rom' which was total gibberish to me. So I did some more googling and found a modified 3e recovery thing for the infuse. I used some file system app to put that where it was supposed to be, but then saw that I needed clockworkmod to be able to flash things. By this point I realized I was far, far over my head, but stupidly pressed on. At about the same time, I also extracted the zip file from exop.pro, and replaced the wpa file that existed already in system/bin with the one from the zip. I also booted into recovery mode, and tried to install clockwork mod, which failed even though as far as I can see. Now, when I turn my phone on, everything is ok except that it can't scan for wifi. I assume this is because I ****ed with the wifi file. I've basically decided to give up at this point, so please, just tell me how to made it work again and I'll promise to not **** with it anymore. Also, I neglected to make a backup. Stupid, but I didn't know how and didn't want to go through another huge thing.
tl;dr
I tried to make it so I could connect to ad hoc networks on my infuse 4g and ended up destroying my wda_supplicant file in system/bin (i think) and
Google the original file you replaced, ' wpa supplicant file download for infuse 4g'. Next time save a copy or backup of whatever your doing.
Thanks, but I really have no idea what is what. Could you link me the right one? I'm sorry that I'm so useless.

this was your problem the first time... you need to read and study before you just start flashing things to your phone man. haha... us linking you somewhere will not help you figure that part out... and its an important part of tinkering with these phones in the way you are trying to.
rid yourself of the apple mentality where everything is spoon fed.
moving on, however, do what the guy previous to me said... find that file you downloaded. and do some reading, watch some instructional videos, focus on just rooting the phone properly for now. do that, then read, watch, ask questions like you are doing when you need to, then proceed.
read comments and stuff in forums about the ROMs you are flashing, what kind of problems do they have, what recovery is recommended for that particular ROM, stuff like that. just READ everything and anything you can about what you are doing....
the company that made your newly found OS has a nice little search engine called google... and it works pretty well if you know how to use it i'll keep an eye on this thread for you as others are probably doing so we can provide you with whatever answers you might need. good luck!
a good rule of thumb when flashing hax0red software to these phones is when something ****s up, 9/10 times it's just a little tiny thing you missed or did during the install yourself... so back to square one, and pay close attention to detail. these phones can be a little touchy when flashing ROMs if you are not doing it exactly they way it is recommended.
perfect example of this: when i had my samsung moment... when i converted from 2.1 OS to 2.2... for some odd reason i would ALWAYS have to flash a little script zip to wipe the 2.1 data from the device before flashing the 2.2 zipped ROM to the phone... the 2.2 ROM was supposed to do this and take care of it completely for me, but even though it did, the only way it would work properly every time i was going from 2.1 to 2.2 was to flash that zip beforehand...
hope that long rant provided some useful insight
Thanks.
But I have read the instructions on the stuff I'm trying to do, several times, and like I said, I'm more confused that I was at first.
I'm just not willing to break it any further.
So basically what I'm wondering now is, how do I put everything back to how it should be. Is there a way? Like, is there a way to load the original software back? I don't think restoring it to factory settings would fix what I did, but tell me if I'm wrong.
I just want everything back to normal.
Please.
Edit: I know it seems like I'm not doing anything to help myself, but I have a lot on my plate in life right now, and I also have absolutely no idea where to even start. Half of the terms you use mean nothing to me, and I'm just so overwhelmed.
I just want to know if there is some way to put it back to how it came out of the box.
Turns out that once the new wda_supplicant thing is ACTUALLY GRANTED PERMISSION TO EXECUTE, that everything works fine. Thanks guys
see... Knew you would figure it out man

i'd ask this question in the sensation q&a forum.... might get a more targeted response.
Did you install the new firmware from this thread? It is required for ICS based roms. You also need superCID if you haven't got it already.
Look for more info in the Sensation forums.
thank you for the replies, i will take this thread to the sensation Q&A's. Yes everything i downloaded was from xda developes, i got the firmware, i think i did the super CID but im not sure if i did it right, im new to the whole root thing, like i said i rooted it a month ago with the ginigerbread that i got from here and it was flawless, i just made a mistake trying to install the ICS and i dont know what to do at this point.
Looks like your Headed in the right direction, GOOD LUCK!
Advice if you are not really understanding rooting i would suggest reading up on it, and double check the directions as you go along even if you have to copy the guy put it in a note pad and strike out anything you did after you completed it will get you comfortable and you'll do it smoother! If you get into your boot loader and it wont scroll down or up hit your designated select key it will do something and but you back to the main menu, mine locks up sometimes and i do that and i am free to roam around, also a another quick tip take your SD out of your phone and put it in a card reader there REALLY CHEAP, it should mount then you can go in there and delete the old software and put a fresh new copy in there and then put it back into your phone. do a factory reset, then wipe cache and re install. just future tips!

I agree with ride this bike. Unfortanetly I can give you my opinion but you looking and trying out some for yourself will be the best solution. Everyone has there own wants and feels like I want ics cuz I love always having the newest stuff, and even the original devs that made it have bugs cuz its new. Which means even more bugs for the aftermarket devs. So for now there probably isn't a stable version that I have seen. But this thread is where I started from just a short skim of there work they have made alot of progress and are keeping everyone updated to the latest news which is what I like. The place I started is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380478 please note you will possibly have random resets and a bunch of functions not working. Please for the love of God before you go and start your trial an error read the entire post a few times then get the software and do a nand back up. Just invade you don't like it you can go back tovwhere you left off. And also if u have a problem search that thread first to see if others are having it and might have fixed it.

[Q] tethering and my htc and att?

Hello, can someone help me with something. I rooted my htc inspire a few months back. I did not change the room just left it as is. I am now trying to tethering my accer a500 to my htc inspire. I have tried the hot spot and also tried to hook cable to tablet from phone. when i try hot spot it turns on then turns off says i need to call att.
I am wondering do i have to flash phone with a differnet rom inorder to use those functions. or is their a way around the issue. Sorry for my lack of knowing lol. i am looking but I have not found a newbie guid covering this. I am asuming i do need to flash phone with custom rom but wanted to make sure.
update
I guess should of added more info. I have rooted my phone a long while back. I did not flash a custom Rom to my phone. I am running the Rom the phone came with just rooted. Thanks again for any help someone will be able to give. I am still reading the fourms just guess not understanding. From what I am getting if I want hot spot to work or tethering to work I need to flash my phone with a custom Rom.
a 30second search of putting 'free tether htc inspire' into google would have given you the answer you need. This has been asked over and over and over. You are technically breaching your agreement and if you get caught that is on you. Here is a link in the market for a simple to use app. Next time please search before making threads.

ok
Lol sorry but you really think I didn't do that like a month ago. Really I have read and re-read every topic even close to covering this topic. One topic saying yes you can the next saying it didn't work. Figured would find someone nice enough to say yes you can do it, and here is the topic area to look. Thank you for the link
Update, followed your link and it went no were. Google free tethering again and came up with the same thing. Someone saying they have a way to make it work. Then a bunch of posts after that with people saying it worked for a bit but not now. I'm just looking to see if it can be done, what has and has not worked and if I am right and I need a custom Rom.
I use EasyTether Pro, don't know if its safe, but I have been using it for almost 2 years on 2 different phones, and haven't been stuck with a higher bill yet

thanks for the info
Was wondering do you guys use the cable, or set up a WiFi way. I don't plan on doing any downloading I use a program that looks up info for me on the net. Maybe some Facebook on the night ****. Once again thanks for the help with this very cool.
I dont have to DD an app to use hotspot because my dev built it in, which most roms do... but if you must stick with your stock rom... (thumbs down)
I used "open garden" wifi tether on a few different phones requiring that functionality. Its one of the best out there IMHO
P.S. If you like the stock feel and stability? of your stock rom, but are ready to open your phone up to a brand new life...
My suggestion for a jump off point(ROM) is 'COREDROID'! I dont rock it anymore, but it was imo the best, next very close runner up would be 'AndroidRevolution'...
Both of those have built in hotspot, plus a WAYYY faster UI than stock. Just My Opinion. good luck!
I have never tried to tether using stock rom, however almost all custom roms I have used have the ability to tether. Maybe try a custom rom, I like IceColdSandwich v 4.2. Good luck!
Thank u very much that was what I was really looking for. I will start looking for custom Rom that might work for me. I really need to learn how to back up the Rom I have so I can save it so I can flash it back to phone if need be. Thanks again all for all the help with this.
Start by looking for a recovery like "cwm recovery"... within the Inspire forums. Follow the directions exactly and read them ALL first, then reread them before flashing. Once youve achieved a recovery, you'll have opened yourself up to try ROMS i.e.Try coredroid for a few days then perform a backup of coredroid, then flash AR and run that for a few days.
As it seems in your OP, youre kinda used to a stock ROM and both of those are based on stock, with enhancements, and bloatware removed... MUCH FASTER and responsive.
So just start with one thing at a time - Recovery Time!!!
p.s. once youve installed your recovery, you should backup your current config before going to the next step - ROM!!! Practice good backup skills, and you'll limit your headaches considerably.
hello, thank you all for your replies. I am really wanting to move up to custom roms. Prob is I do not know how to back up my current rom, and how to check it to make sure its good. I am looking for the info and what app to use to get the best back up file. i want to be sure I know how to back up and also how to go back to the back up if need be before I move forward. If someone knows of a guide to do that stuff or has any good information could you pm me please. thanks a bunch for the help.

I used the EasyTether app a few times around last Christmas. Today I got the email from AT&T about tethering. So I guess now we can't use EasyTether?
I went to my local store yesterday and had a rep examine my phone to be sure there was no way I could tether. She noted it in my account. Today I got a txt msg saying I was tethering. So I called the 866 number in the msg and the phone rep told me they can now tell any time a computer or any other device is plugged into the phone and any time a tethering app is used. So according to her logic, we can't even use our computers to charge our phones.

no, she means they can detect the tethering. not the connection itself. u can still charge and xfer files and sync lol

*I* know that. But she apparently doesn't. She told me that ANY time ANYTHING is plugged into the phone now counts as tethering. Even if NO apps are being used. I know better than to believe that lol.

Sucks for EasyTether and PDANet users
This seems a good place to ask. Of course, the ref with whom I spoke claims that their system is flawless, but is there anyone here who kows AT&Ts systems that can speak as to the reliability of their inspection system?
The reason I ask, I was informed that "the data connection from your phone was opened to another device several times within the past 2 months." I used it once, I'm afraid that something looks like tethering to their system, and I'll end up with a more expensive capped plan rather than my unlimited plan (truth is that I've only gone over 3 GB once of which I'm aware, I just don't like the concept of caps.... or more cost).
I finaly put a custom rom on my phone and was able to hotspot and tether my phone to my laptop. Only used it to load one page of xda just to see if it worked or not. I never got a text meassage or phone call or anything. I also use a bunch of bandwidth on a daily bases. e-mail, web games and such. I had to re-lock my phone sending it to htc to get repaired, when i get it back it will be re rooted and custom rom and tethered again. Will let you know what happens then. lol
They will constantly improve the system. the more people that find ways around it the more they will invest in closing the holes. they didnt used to have the ability to see but more and more is pointing to packet inspection and TTL's on them to see if theres another device behind the phone. it's not just an apn setting anymore. it's best either to not tether and breach contract or just pay the $15 a month and use it. Getting around it now, could change next week or a month or tomorrow. companies will do what they can to protect their services from being taken advantage of, and with the number of users that are stealing tethering data, that is a considerable cost. do i think its fair that i need to pay $15 to connect my pc to phone for just a picture here and there, no, but the consumer always wants everything for free.

[Q] Has anybody gotten a GT-P5113 rooted with Jellybean yet?

I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GT-P5113 and I want Jellybean on it pretty bad. Jellybean is android 4.2, I think. Right now I have 4.0.4 and turned off OTA because I have a rooted stock ROM. My Friend has the same tablet, NOT rooted and took the latest OTA update. She still has 4.0.4 but a different kernel. Samsung is really dragging their butts about releasing Jellybean for this tablet, what is the problem?
I use Clockworkmod ROM manager to manage my ROMs, but originally rooted with Odin and a Windows 7 laptop. Does anybody actually have a GT-P5113 rooted and working on Jellybean yet or is this just a fantasy?
If so, could you please tell how you did it, source files, or at least a URL to the howto page?
Thanks.
I am using Jelly Bean 4.1.2. It's not 4.2 but is Jelly Bean. Look in the tab 2 development forum a couple topics down

Yeah? No kidding? Well that is better than what I got, I did a cyanogenmod through clockworkmod and it was pretty cool and all, but no jellybean. Still had 4.0.4. I messed with it for a while, but all my stuff was gone and even Titanium could not bring it back. Since the new ROM didn't do anything spectacular, I used CWM to put back my old rom and apps. I do not want to start all over again if it is not what I want.
I will go see if I can find it. If you can, give me some links to check out. Thanks! :good:

Yah, it is true, there are JB updates for this thing. All ROMs are rooted so there we go! What I found is:
[ROM][GT-P51XX][JB][4.1.2] CyanogenMod 10 official nightly builds
Now the instructions say to use the P5100 ROM but there are P5113 ROMS too. We also need Google Apps: Oh Christ, good luck figuring out which one you need.
For JB we need a CyanogenMod 10. Can be found here for P5113.
We get Android 4.1.2 and Jellybean! I did this last night from the Cyanogen mods in CWM and was not impressed, plus I did not read the instructions about using Titanium to backup only my user apps and NOT the data. NO system apps. Thus, I could not use Titanium to restore my stuff and was pretty pissed about starting all the way over and not even having JB. This is different and this I can do, besides, it is not even difficult.
I am definitely going for this but this time, I will do it right, get my apps backed up in Titanium the way it says, get the right ROM from the page I gave you the link for, and follow the instructions in the above link. I need some time for this but tomorrow I have to go and get my girl. She is close to 100 miles away and I got a roommate moving in for a few months, this will be hectic but I will get it done. Since doing this ROM will put me back to stock with all my stuff gone, I need my apps and google maps and navigator to get my baby, I restored back to my rooted Touch Wiz because everything works great. In the car, I use my Verizon Razr Maxx to get WiFi without that hot spot bill with an essential tool for rooted phones: wifi tether for root users. I turn this on, I have wifi for the tablet and can use Google Navigator on the big screen, not to mention great music and talk radio with Tune In, Pandora, or Slacker. If you got a rooted phone and a WiFi tablet, this is a Must Have app and it is totally free!
Thanks man. If anyone is interested in what happened, did it work, is it cool? Is it difficult, and do I have any tips, I will be glad to post them here, upon request. Wish me luck and thanks dude!
Hi Ohmster - Ok, I thought about giving you the rom I am using but decided you should see which one you want. Aside from that I am using

It seems to be working very well for me.
Good luck picking up your girl. Since you are where you are you shouldn't have any weather (snow) problems.

Yeah, that is the one I was looking at. Hey, did you backup your apps to Titanium? I never backed up "just downloaded apps without data before" and that is what I have to do or else I will be stuck trying to remember and install almost 400 apps. Did you use Titanium to restore your apps or did you just do the ROM and then do everything by hand after that? Oh, do you have a GT-P5113? Thanks!
I have a I777 ATT so I have a lot of my backups with titanium and just transfered them over to the Tab. Most of the time I just restore app and no data. Some I get them fresh from the market. Yes I am using Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 WiFi, GT-5113 same as you.

Yep, that's the one that I am looking at. I have had this thing on my screen for days, wanting to do it, but not wanting to lose the tab if I have to pickup my girl, she lives about 75 miles away and the huge 10.1" tab screen is excellent for Google Maps and better yet, Google Navigation. It gets me right there and if I am low on cash, I can tell it to bypass tolls. The Florida Turnpike and I95 pretty much run, side by side, so either is about the same drive, but the Turnpike will cost about $7-8 each way, only two lanes, no stops but for 50 mile apart rest areas. I95 is free and has more lanes but chokes with traffic during the week at rush hour.
The rest of you guys can skip this stuff in red, it is way off topic...
This really sucks man, she is watching over her sick dad, he has black lung on oxygen all the time, Virginia and the coal mines, you know. Then he is hospitalized with a heart attack. So, she stays at his side 24/7. Sleeping on the hospital floor and all that. The other kids, many older, do not bother this much. He comes home and she sleeps in his room, on the floor, by his side, to give medicine on schedule and in case he has any sort of complication. I tell her that she is burning the candle at both ends and will not make it, come down by me, let me pamper you for two days, decompress, and feel good. We will get you a self inflating air mattress to cover your sleeping needs, plus whatever kind of girly stuff she needs. It takes her a whole day and night to start to loosen up and feel better. Now she goes into the shower, next stop, Netflix in the bed for some fun and rest. They phone rings, it her family, telling her dad needs her, he is getting worse and she is the only one who can care for him proper. She made out a detailed notebook of prescription medication, dates, times, initials, just to make sure that he is cared for proper, and the lazy ass sister iwth 6 kids and all the rest of them cannot "take care of dad" so she has to come home, NOW. *@# Dammit, there goes our "happy time"
AND the next day of rest and pampering for my baby. She is a good chick, she makes me lay down and does her thing, she won't leave unless I am "so satisfied that I won't even look at another girl" (I don't look at other women anyway, I am old fashioned and never cheat.) and right back into the car we go, to take her home and then I drive back home again. I only got like 4 hours sleep the night before and I am way too tired to make this drive but I have to. She is *****ing the entire way to let her drive, but she does not have a license so I am a bit uncomfortable with that so I have to put up with her the whole time and she is right. (She owes fines from a long time ago and we do not have the money yet to pay them all off, payment plan.) I make it there, dad seems no worse than when we left or so it seems, and I drive home. Got pretty close too but then got nailed by a State Trooper, caught me not staying in my lane and everyone is doing 65-70 MPH, do 55 and you will get run over. I show my credentials and explain that I am way tired, the entire dad/girl/sick stuff so he gives me a sobriety test. Follow the pen with your eyes only. What is your education level, high school graduate? Recite the alphabet, NO singing, from A to Z. I pass both tests with ease. He says fatigue and intoxicated appear the same to a cop so I think maybe he will give me some sort of break, only 15 miles from home now. NO. On ticket for "Fail to stay in single lane", $166 plus one for "Unlawful speed 70 Interstate", $266. $432 in fines plus points, could this day get ANY worse?!! And I am a decent guy too. Never lie, never cheat, don't steal, faithful, the whole 9 yards! I need a ticket lawyer. ...sigh.
Yeah, here is the happy couple... Pictures Attached.
So yeah, that is exactly the ROM I am looking at, you say it is good, I am up for it. I did grab a Cyanogen 9 from inside of CWM, but that was not Jellybean and then everything was gone. ClockworkMod made the entire thing fast and easy, but did not offer cyanogen 10. I restored the previous backup.
Okay, so help me out here. The download links on that page do not work, man. The Google Apps are so numerous, which one did you install for your GT-P5113? I want to do this really bad but when I tried CMK9, CWM made it real easy, backed up the current system first, did the update really fast, wiped all caches, and I was left with, not much of anything. I did install Gapps and downloaded the Titanium backujp that I paid for, wanted to put my stuff back but Titanium could not find any backups. I forgot to do the setup and tell it to look on the SD card as well as Dropbox and G Drive, I think I am supposed to restore apps only, NO DATA. Once I put my gmail account back in, my contacts and all should come back and Titanium will do the apps so this should not be that hard.
I can download the ROM and install from SD card with CWM, should be a piece of cake, but I need good links to the ROM AND Gapps. Can you help me out? I want what you got. Thanks!
[Solved] 4.2.1 installed!
I finally got Jellybean installed with the Cyanogenmod ROM 10.1. This one works good.
cm-10-20121130-EXPERIMENTAL-p5110-CODEWORKX.zip
gapps-jb-20121130-signed.zip
This page tells exactly how to do it and where to get the files.
By the way, you can forget all that attach the cable to the PC stuff and just use Clockworkmod ROM manager to install this, piece of cake. Put the two files on sdcard, boot to recovery, wipe both caches, install the zip for the ROM and install the zip for gapps. Done!
Thanks everybody. Just wanted to close this thread properly.
