I'm currently using CM10 Chopstixs - Alpha along with Tmob blaze radio. I'm trying to use the *#2263# entry on dialer to check what radio bands are what. Every time I enter this on my dialer I get two responses.
1.USSD code running
and then
2. Connection problem or invalid MMI code.
Is this dialer entry dependent on Radio firmware, Rom or dialer?

Not yet, I don't understand the relation between the command and the radio firmware. The command is to change what certain bands are doing, I believe. So if the command works does it have to work in conjunction with the radio installed or is it used ndependent of the radio firmware?
Edit: Just tried with "Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip" and "Blaze_4G_LB7_ICS_Radio_MOD.zip", same problem.

as far as i know, no, these are samsungs service codes for their hardware, since cm is based on googles code and not based on specific hardware, dont see it working unless someone merges the service codes into cm which i dont think is possible. skyics is based on samsungs firmware so the service codes work for that rom

Well it seems the problem I'm having using the tmob radios with my skyrocket is that even though the task bar is showing "H" my download speeds are very slow when running a side by side test with my buddies T989 using Speedtest. This of course leads me to believe that one of the bands are not being utilized correctly. Unfortunately, without the service code I don't know how to check it?
Any ideas would greatly be appreciated. I'm reading myself blind here but no one seems to know for sure how to do this. Everything I've read pretty says "Oh well, if you have "H" on your task bar you must be good. Well it ain't so, at least not here!
BTW, I'm getting a very sporadic 2 to 3 MGPS compared to his 5 to 8 MGPS on the download and I don't even wanna talk about the upload.

More Confused
Install SKYICS and of course *#2263" works but differently depending on which tmob radio installed. By that I mean there are different entries which also leads me to believe that the default network band selection comes as part of the radio firmware. Every time you flash a radio the defaults change.
Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip has the following options with Automatic being the default but not starred (*).
1.Automatic
2. Wcdma Band Preferences
3. GSM Band Preferences
4. LTE Band Preferences
5. Add Band Preferences
6. Wcdma/Gsm Prefernces
Blaze_4G_LB7_ICS_Radio_MOD.zip has the following options with Automatic being the default but not starred (*).
1. Automatic
2. Wcdma Band Preferences
3. GSM Band Preferences
4. LTE Band Preferences
Why there is a difference I don't know, but the bottom line was that trying to mix and match prove to be fruitless and in many cases simple knockout 3g/4g and force the phone to E(edge). The only way to fix that was to select Automatic at which point it put an * by the entry signifying it was the default. And after repeated Speedtests runs it never was better than 3 MGPS on the download compared to the T989 stock at 6-8 MGPS.
If the modem hardware is truly the same then it would seem that the problem lies between the ROM and the Radio firmware. Very confused at this point.
Now I'm wondering if a Tmob Rom will run on a SKYROCKET????

I think that's the next test, something is wrong between the Tmob radios and the CM10 Jelly roms (and SKYICS too). This is not just a plug n play and everything runs hunky dorey. That being said would you happen to know how do you get the kernel for/from the TeamChopsticks CM10 Skyrocket rom?

One of the things I've notice is the phone is constantly changing between UMTS and HSPAP. It's seems to do it frequently during an upload or download which completely interrupts (stops) the process to switch bands. This of course bring data transfer to a halt sometimes locking up Speedtest. The other thing is when I reboot the phone I'm not sure what the default preferred network type is. When you enter *#*#4636#*#* you have a lot of network options but I don't know which is the default set in the phone and I don't know what if should be for Tmob?
Here are the options;
1. WCDMA preferred
2. GSM only
3. WCDMA only
4. GSM auto(PRIL)
5. CDMA auto(PRIL)
6. CDMA only
7. EvDo only
8. GSM/CDMA auto(PRIL)
9. LTE/CDMA auto(PRIL)
10. LTE/GSM auto(PRIL)
11. LTE/GSM/CDMA auto(PRIL)
12. LTE only
12. Unknown
I don't have a clue!
Try number 1, wdcma is hspa(4g) click end
then click auto then end, reboot phone and test
Edit i see auto is not an option

Ok first a little house keeping. In CM10 using *#*#4636#*#*> select "Phone Information", scroll to "Set preferred network type" hit the drop down and select the one of the options I listed above and just hit the back button until you exit out. The good news is that your selection is saved even after rebooting. The bad new is if you change radios you have to start over. The next piece of bad news is there are a lot of choices that seem to have different effects when used in conjunction with System Setting>More>Network Mode. So far I've tested quite a few and there is definitely a difference. My best speedtest result so far is with;
*#*#4636#*#*>Phone Information>Set preferred network type>LTE/GSM auto (PRIL)
System Setting>More>Network Mode>LTE/GSM
I manage to get 4.4 mgps on the DL and .9 msps on UL. Still no where near a T989 and please keep in mind I haven't tested every permutation. What this problem really needs is someone to take a look who's real savvy with networks????

It's only possible with Rogers-based ROMs (e.g. Infused v2.x)
It's not possible with the stock AT&T ROM or any derivatives, and causes all sorts of problems with CM7.
Hopefully AT&T's Gingerbread update will fix this.

Infused v2 is Rogers-based.
Entropy, I was able to force 2G with Infused 1.5.3 when I had it paired with the Rogers modem. I used the star code *#2263# and that allowed me to select a GSM only band.
Also, on current infused.v2 builds, I cannot force 2G as they're not using Rogers modem and I don't feel like flashing another modem and bricking it on these test builds.

Oh, thanks for the info - it's the modem and not the userland! Very useful to know.
I have ICS-SUPERLITE-4.2 on Rogers and i totally lost LTE. I wrote in many existing threads and dev section and no one answered.
I lost LTE, even in areas of full reception, i dont have it, i used stock APN and LTE APN and still dont get it. I do get 4G.
Other on rogers running 4.2 have lte, just less reception so im guessing radio is not the problem. Any idea?

I've had to use the *#2263# option to get LTE on every ICS ROM I have tried so far, works great but sometimes I have had to redo it after the 2nd and 3rd reboot for it to take...
Another solution is after you flash an ICS ROM is to have patience , if you wait 5 minutes or so after flashing, before even touching\unlocking the screen, then most of the time everything settles in nicely on its own.
if ur using rogers with the ics leaks, there's several issues. Call id and lack of lte being one of them. This issue is present with all of them, it is an unstable leal after all. i believe lack of lte unless near a strong connection is due to uclca4 issues.
well after doing what i wrote 2 posts above, i have no issues with phone except for reboot/power off hang, i also get the occasional 2-3 second lag but its quite rare. Besides, im very haapy with rom, battery life is much better than GB
no lte after ics leak
I've the same issue with AT&T in Miami which has a strong LTE network. LTE worked great with GB. After installing the ICS leak all I get is HSPA:11. When I go into *#2263# it says RAT Selection option is restricted. Anyone have a solution?

Ditto - well actually I AM seeing LTE, but a drastically reduced data rates. Does not seem to matter what ROM, or Kernel or how many times I have re-flashed or re-flashed just the ICS Radio, I get roughly HALF of what I was seeing on GB. Ugh. I don't WANNA go back to Gingerbread. I just want perfection. Is that too much to ask for?

It's not the APN, at least in my case. It just crappy reception, and it happened exactly when I flashed ICS, and has been like that ever since. This in spite of re-flashing the Olin leak, reflashing the the radio, etc. It really irks me, and I do NOT want to go back to GB

Slight problem: This doesn't work. That very same thread reveals that the phone will just override whatever you choose.
even though your not in a lte area, it isnt searching for the signal. Proven from other members already. So dont worry about it. If your not using data, just turn off mobile data for now.
I even tried to make the APN that a lot of people are having luck with, but where I live there is constantly an LTE signal so it got it anyways even with the HSPA+ APN I made for some reason. My battery life is bad with LTE but the speed is amazing.

I'm trying to set the HSPA-only APN on my phone, since my phone keeps trying extra hard to get on the little LTE it can find here, and it's MURDERING my battery.
Seems AT&T locked the APN's, too. I can't select anything other than the default AT&T profile.
I think you guys could try the patch to convert to Rogers Version in dev section... (root required)
not sure if you guys could flash a Rogers RUU or not (s-off required)
at least ATT stock rom, its hard to disable LTE...
Made a new APN with the exact same settings as the default but with APN Type set to *. Speeds are about the same as my gsii.
Nvm, that didn't work. Ill have to go back to the wap.cingular settings.
Try editing the build.prop and changing the ro.telephony.default_network setting to 0. The default value set by AT&T should've been 9, indicating that the device should connect to LTE > WCDMA > GSM networks in that order. Setting it to 0 reconfigures the device to prefer WCDMA networks over GSM and LTE networks.
The changed setting should read: ro.telephony.default_network=0

If you do not live in an LTE area then there is no reason to disable LTE on the phone. AT&T uses an integrated "circuit switched fallback" on the radio which defaults to UMTS/HSPA(+) when not in an LTE area.
The only people who would benefit from an LTE "on/off" switch would be people who do live in an LTE area so that they can disable it when not using the phone for simple sync procedures.

I live in a really annoying place in NJ where it is constantly switching between LTE (1 bar) and HSPA+ (4 bars). I can literally watch my battery drain. And I can barely use data since its constantly switching back and forth.
After some searching, I found that you can go to the APN settings, create a new profile, change the "Name" to whatever (I chose AT&T HSPA+) and change the "APN" field to "phone" without quotation marks.
Leave everything else defaulted to the normal values.
Then save the APN and go back to the APN screen and click on the little white radio button on the right of the APN you created (be sure to click on the radio button, not the whole bar).
Reboot. I just did this today so I will see how it affects my battery life.
Build.prop is the Only Correct Method

^This.
Changing the apn will make your data slower, but not alter your radio's behavior. Changing the build.prop will keep your radio from looking for anything else once it finds a WCDMA (UMTS, 3G) connection.
Note that you need to find and change all occurrences of ro.telephony.default_network to 0. The build.prop on AT&T RUUs includes it multiple times with different values.

I have it flashed to AT&T right now and am using a friends T-mobile sim card that we cut down to fit into the SCH-i535 GS3... it seemed to sync with the towers and get mms.. text.. calls... and internet... just not 3g... I would like to know if someone has found a fix to this issue...
Thanks for your time.
Why not just flash the Verizon Jellybean Rom (Cleanrom or Jellywiz) since global mode was enabled in that Rom? Then drop your tmo sim in.

Useful thread so far, but I have a several questions.
I currently have a Verizon Galaxy S3 SGH-i535 with a T-Mobile prepaid sim card (unlimited everything), I can call and text, but cannot get any network access.
I'm currently running Clean Rom 5, settings on Global. Is there any way I can enable data, preferred 3G? [due to that T-Mobile will get 4G on Verizon phones next month).
On CM10, I get Edge and can receive text, but cannot send text. Tried APN settings, etc. Is there a fix for this?
I have tried everything, but no luck. Any suggestions is appreciative

So what I did is i unlocked the bootloader... rooted it... and then flashed the AT&T stock rom on it and then plugged in the TMO sim card and then changed the bands to GSM auto. and it picked up edge... I was able to get access to the network with data... but the only catch was that it was slow as hell... as it was only edge. I am still working on programming to get the i535 on the tmobile bands... thus far I have not been able to get the phone on 4g or even 3g yet... I will keep you updated though.

have you tried using the hidden menu in the dial pad at all??
There is an app out there that will get access to the menu and allow you to change everything in the phone... but be very careful with this app as it can and will brick your phone if you do not know what you are doing with the app..
Netmonitor --> look for this on the google play store
To change the bands to at least get data on the phone, follow the instructions below:
1. install Netmonitor on the S3
2. open the app
3. hit the menu button
4. select field test
5.select UMTS
6. Select DEBUG SCREEN
7. Select PHONE CONTROL
8. Select NETWORK CONTROL
9. select BAND SELECTION
10. Select either AUTOMATIC or GSM Band Preference
* if you choose automatic the phone will look at the sim card and go from there to get the phone on the network to get data on the phone.
11. Select GSM ALL
This is the thread that I am following at the moment to get the phone on HSPA+ or 3G.. If you have anymore questions then please let me know I will do my best to help you out.

I have not tried that yet, but just right now, I got successful on connecting with Data by changing my APN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34632097#post34632097), but fairly still slow G speed. Hoping for HSPA+ or 3G too.

Changing APN's is another way to do what I just told you about... My way is a little easier.. lol .. let me know if you want/need any further help
Hmm, one more thing:
Is there anyway to make this work on CM10 or AOKP? Due to that global setting/APN setting is not available on these ROMs. =/

I have not messed with custom roms just yet I am working with stock roms and rooting and unlocking bootloaders right now... I will see if I can find them time to load a CM10 on my s3 that I am using for development and get back to you with the results here as soon as I have them... I am not for sure if I am going to be able to get to it this week as I have alot going on but I will try and get to it.
Thanks for your support.
In the mean time, I will see if the CM or AOKP team can implement these settings.

that would be great! If I can help in any other way let me know.. or if they have questions please give them a link to this thread. and I will be more than happy to talk to them.
hey guys sorry that it has taken awhile for me to get back to you.. so I flashed the TMO rom on the I5 and got the same results just edge. I think that I am going to try using bobloblaw1 suggestion and flash the verizon leaked jellybean rom and then use global mode to be able to see if I am going to be able to get more than edge...
Here is a guide if you do not know how to flash roms on your S3 here
greetings, all.
i have the same problem that you are describing. running CM 11 Nightly (but problem also existed on VZW stock & CM 10.2). i have read all the forum's about this topic, but as of yet there seems to be no SURE fix to get anything faster than Edge data from T-mobile.

I know the skyrocket I727 supports LTE. With stock firmware LTE is not a problem. But when I put any custom ROM it no longer goes to LTE. Is this normal or is their a separate download for an LTE radio in these custom ROMS?
This is not common at all. Check that your apn settings are correct. And you have the recommended radio. What rom are you using?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I have tried slimbean superlite and a few others. My radio is well I can't seem to find that. My baseband version is i727ucll3 I use CWM touch...When I go into mobile networks is says HSPA:10 and that's it.
Radio or modern is the same thing as baseband. I'm not familiar with the slim bean rom so maybe someone who is can give you a better answer. But in Mobil networks, apn on the superlite rom I have three options with one being lte.

If you're using a rom like PA, CM10, AOKP and probably Slim Bean too.. 4G=LTE.
Do I need to install a new radio? I just ran a speed test and I am getting only about 2 megs down, where before on stock it was like 15 megs down...

Ok I'm their but it will not let me choose anything except HSPA:10 when I try to choose LTE it reverts back to the HSPA

Can you take a screenshot of this screen.. it'd be easier to see what's up?
Edit: Also, what rom are you on now?
The radio you have is the right one, but I'd re-flash it. See vincoms stickies in the development section. He'll have the radio download and how to do it.

Download the ucll3 radio from vicoms sticky and flash it. You don't need to do any wipes and its not going to muck anything up. It'll take care of your problem.

Have you run a speed test lately? As said, many custom ROMs don't have an LTE icon; 4G is LTE, H+ is what AT&T considers "4G" in areas without LTE coverage. Running a speed test is an easy way to tell. If you're getting LTE speeds when your phone says 4G, you're on a ROM that doesn't show an LTE icon.

I'm a blast from the past!
Sent from the long bus, I got mainstreamed
Have you tried opening dialer up, entering *#*#4636#*#*
Go to phone information, scroll down to a drop down menu. Sometimes it'll say WCDMA preferred. Open it and select LTE and your signal should drop and cone back as LTE. After select LTE/GSM and close it.
Are you sure you were on LTE in the first place? AT&T is kinda misleading with their branding and calls HSPA+ "4G" whereas LTE is "4G LTE".

I try flashing pacman rom and my phone is displaying the 4g logo. In the pacman rom thread, I saw a snap shot with
the lte symbol. Any ideas?
