Help - Exchange emails not fully displaying - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Peculiar problem, did some searching and there is very little out there. A small percentage (~10%) of my Exchange emails only load the first few lines of text and I don't get the option to load more details - i.e. I can't read more than a few lines of the email.
1) It occurs when there is an attachment or image involved, generally from a forwarded email.
2) I have tried changing fetching images on/off, and changing 'size to receive emails' to 'all'. Does not make a difference.
3) This is the VERY strange part: If I forward the email (that I can't fully view) to myself from my phone, I am able to view that newly forwarded message in it's entirety.
What on earth could be causing this? It is driving me CRAZY since I am very dependent on my phone for work. Would appreciated any input - thanks!
Other info:
Our Exchange email is hosted via InterMedia - I had zero problems with my DX. I also have an iPad that works seamlessly and my coworker has a DMAXX (running ICS) that works fine too. I'm 90% sure this is a phone issue and not a problem with the server.

I would try clearing the data in your email app and setting up your account again to see if that helps. Otherwise maybe a factory reset would help. There are not any settings in the program that really apply to your issue. Back when I had an s2 my exchange just wouldn't load any emails.. then I updated to ics and email worked fine again. May be a chance this version of mail conflicts with your server as well. I say try clearing data then if not factory reset.

Forgot to mention - I did try clearing the email cache earlier but the option to clear the data is greyed out. I can however clear the data and cache for the exchange services, is that what you mean?

bon courage !

I had a similar problem. I had to change the text color and background color for the text to display again. For example I changed text to black and once I did that it was visible again. Eventhough the setting said it was black it was still displaying white.
Hope this helps.

Unfortunately I read this on another site, it does not solve the problem, thanks though.

I would just try a factory reset. When I was talking about clearing data I meant from the manage applications menu in settings. Usually when you clear cache you can still clear data too, that would make it to where you would have to set up the email again.

This appears to have worked, thanks! I still don't understand why it happened, I didn't change any settings prior to the issue coming up...

Update - issue is still occurring, even after a wipe. Also it's not just with forwarded emails, received an original message this morning with the same problem.
Is anyone else having this problem? I called Samsung directly - they were worthless and told me to download a 3rd party email app - are you effing kidding me??? I've also spoken with InterMedia and they assured me it's not an issue on their end, but if NO ONE else is experiencing this, maybe it is something with my office's config. I just dont understand why the 2 other ICS devices we have work fine with it...

Having the same issue as you. It's not every email and it's not just forwards or emails with images in the body of the email. Wish we could find a resolution as it's a pain to have to go back to my laptop just to finish reading an email.

I had this problem. The cause (for me) was the Power Saving feature in the OS has an option to change the background color in email and internet to save power. This setting seems to override changing the background color from within the email application itself. Try turning off this feature in the Power Saving module or turning off the Power Saving Module and see if it works. I can't remember, but I believe it only fixed new incoming emails.

I thought the same about the Power Saving feature but I do not have power saving turned on and the issue is still there.

I don't either - do you have a hosted exchange or internal exchange sever? I am so beyond frustrated. So ironic that verizon locks the bootloader to provide better customer service, they too told me to download a 3rd party app.

We host our exchange server. It is odd because the problem you are describing was the exact same problem I was having with mine. I even adjusted the preview text for each email to 3 lines so I could read at least that much. I would be happy to share my email settings on my phone for my exchange account if you think it might help.

No I don't think it will help - I am 99% sure this is a Samsung issue considering you are experiencing the same thing on your own exchange server as my InterMedia hosted one. Argh, just got another incomplete email! Try forwarding the email to yourself (using the same account, to the same account) you should be able to view it that way.
I am going to try K-9 in the mean time.
Please call Samsung, the more people that have this issue the sooner they're hopefully fix it: 1-800-726-7864 - explain that you're not the only one, they thought I was crazy

Sorry, but like I said adjusting the power saving options fixed my issue. I noticed the cause of the issue because if I went to highlight where the text should be it showed up. For some reason some of the settings were displaying white text on a white background instead of white text on a black background. Very weird. Hope you get it figured out.....

We host our own exchange server as well. Never had an issue with any other phone I've had (OG Droid, HTC Incredible, DroidX, HTC Thunderbolt). Seems to be an issue with just this phone. Seems as if on other forums users are experiencing the same...can't post links as I haven't met my 10 posts yet. Some are saying Samsung are aware and supposed to fix it in an upcoming OTA.

Ah sorry I got confused, thought it was tlbland who had replied to me, he was the one I wanted to contact Samsung. Unfortunately neither of us have power saving mode on. I wish that were the case. Part of the email is loading but not all of it. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Try a factory reset. It was taking SO long to push some emails from an account that is relatively empty so I just had about enough of that and decided to do a reset and everything is peachy. Instantly the emails started to load up into the inbox and 5 seconds later it was done.. Amazing!

I agree. Got a weeks worth of time invested in getting this thing set up and programs installed (and paid for).
Mine too doesnt do anything until I go into the mail program. It wont even save my changes I make in the email settings. I set mine to automatic, so they arrive as soon as i get an email, but it keeps going back to the 15 and 30 minute settings. This is my only issue with the phone.
Can someone who has done a hard reset try saving their settings to automatic, go into task killer , kill the email program and go back into email and see if it saved??
Instead of using the "email" program I use the "gmail" built in program and I get instant emails. But then again, I use gmail.
Same here. I use gmail for my personal account but for work I use the regular mail app on the phone. I also set up gmail on that app as well. The actual gmail app works great but my gmail account in the regular mail app doesn't--it will tell me I have gmail mail a couple hours after I have already looked at it in the gmail app and marked as read. Same thing with the work mail, things show up much later then they should.
Haven't found a way to fix it yet.
Are you guys using a task killer? If so and the email program is not ignored, the task killer will close the email app...which at that point is running services to retrieve your email.
In the same boat. I have both GMail and the Email program. Gmail is of course instant, however the built in email is horrible (at least with Exchange). I'm not killing it with taskkiller, and I've deleted and reset it up multiple times. I installed Touchdown and gave it a try, however it really didn't seem to make a huge difference. Unfortunately I think it's something we are going to have to endure until 2.2, which supposedly has Active Synch improvements.
I don't have experience with Exchange but really, a reset will speed up a lot of the loading screen "lag". That's the only thing that will.

And after the reset do you use a restore of titanium backup or do you have to do all resinstall manually and re-configure everything (like home screeens and apps)
The issue isn't so much loading screen lag, it's a long period of waiting to do anything (open, reply, delete) when navigation in the program. I'm assuming (more like guessing) that other phones simply make everything appear to happen instantly, and then perform the tasks in the background unlike on Android where everything is done real time.
For instance on my Blackberry and iPhone when I selected 5 emails and chose delete, all 5 would disappear and I could continue working. In Email I select the 5 messages, the program says Messages Deleted then I watch for 5 to 10 seconds as the messages are deleted one at a time, preventing any meaningful use of the program until the process completes. I've checked the Exchange logs, no errors or anything out of the ordinary. It works, just very slowly.
I had the same problem, but K9 instead. After a _lot_ of testing, gnashing of teeth, and pulling of hair, I think I've found the cause.
Email and K9 both appear to store stuff in the /data dir. This is the exact same location that others online have found to be drag-ass slow and the general cause for black screens and/or lag in general. Which pretty much describes exactly what was happening to me with Email and K9. Search here or at MoDaCo for more info on the lag issue.
The solution is to either hope Samsung can somehow fix the speed of the internal SD card or store data elsewhere. I'd be amazed if Samsung ever fixes the speed issue. And storing data elsewhere isn't an option build into either application. K9 might eventually have that feature added, but I doubt Email ever will. There's a potential fix shown at MoDaCo, but it involves rooting, updating the kernel, and partitioning an external SD card. Nothing difficult, but not for everybody.
Touchdown has an option to store data on the external SD card, so it shouldn't suffer the same problem. I haven't played with it yet to see if it does or not.
As for why Gmail seems to work ok, that's a little trickier. It stores under the same path as the others, but it appears to work in an asynchronus mode, relying more on what you have on the server and only checking the local copy if it can't hit the network. At least that's the best explanation I can come up with for why it seems to work much better than Email or K9.
I was using the Nexus One 2.2, with 2 different Exchange syncs and gmail... NO Problem at all.
Different story with the Captivate... Not rooted, with ATT bloat... hardly any other apps loaded, tried both popular loaders. The email is all most unbearable (and unacceptable), reminds me of the iPhone 3g, if not worse.
Hopefully we'll see a straight 2.2 build soon, or I'm really considering returning the phone (already sold my N1 for a chunk of change).. I have 27 days remaining for a return.
Stock 2.2 is the only way to go.
I'd love a stock 2.2 build! But... unless we get lucky with a major change in the driver for the internal (non-sd) filesystem, I don't think it's going to help with the e-mail issue (or the general lag/blackscreen issue) at all.
It's definately not the at&t bloat, I have mine rooted and all of the at&t apps removed. I definately think the data parition fx is the best route to persue.

Resetting Rooted EE4 Debloated?

I have Rooted EE4 Debloated 4.2.1 installed on my SamChg.
I am having a problem with GMail that nobody has fixed yet (or responded to much, darn it ).
In an attempt to fix my GMail problem, I was thinking of doing a Factory Reset. Would doing the Factory Reset still get me back to Rooted Debloated 4.2.1 with CWM and Voodoo?
P.S.: It sure would be nice if CWM Recovery was working, tho.
Thanks,
have you tried to uninstall gmail and reinstall it?
I just tried removing/reinstalling GMail, and it had no effect. I still get 2 notifications for each new GMail I receive - one with the default notification ringtone, and one with the ringtone selected in the GMail app.
Nobody else has responded much to my questions on this problem, so I figured I should reset my SamChg back to Factory Defaults and see what happens.
That should only blow about 2 hours of time to get back to where I am now
A factory reset does not get you back to a stock ROM, but it gets you to a fresh version of whatever ROM you have installed, and certainly may help your problem. That sounds like a specific issue on your phone, so that's a good troubleshooting step, though fairly heavy handed since it will reset everything on your phone. Have you tried just going in to your list of applications and clearing the data for GMail?
I tried clearing the settings, but it had no effect. When I re-enabled Gmail syncing, I got 2 notifications.
I actually don't think that doing the Factory Reset will solve the problem, but I don't know what else to do right now.

Hi, imnuts - I don't have any other apps checking GMail when I am experiencing this problem.
On the other hand, the only way I have found to fix this problem - currently - is to:
Turn off GMail Sync (under Account Sync),
Freeze the GMail application, and then
Setup my GMail through the TW Email app (with "Push" delivery).
It's a mess I shouldn't need to do, and I also have much slower GMail delivery since I'm at Verizon's mercy as to when *they* want to "push" my email to me.
Also, I don't have any other emails routed to the GMail application.

I'd consider the Factory Reset. I've seen stranger things fixed by that. If that doesn't work, reflash the ROM and kernel.

The past couple of days I've been trying to figure out what/how to fix my framework crashes. I finally got to do a factory reset and I haven't seen any issues so far...
"Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want."
Well, I got some experience.
Doing a Factory Reset on the Debloated v4.2.1 is a VERY BAD THING.
There was virtually nothing available in the App Drawer (not even the Market). In addition, I can't get connected to the 4G network now. I get 5 signal bars, but it never connects to 4G (and, poorly to 3G). Not to mention all the FCs, so I won't mention them.
So, I ODIN'd to the EE4 DXC Voodoo, and it's better. But, I still can't connect to the 4G network.
Sigh.
OK - I got my 4G back, along with most (but not all) of my apps.
I also have the darned GMail double-notifications back, too.

Gmail not sending, please help me.

I have been having a serious ongoing issue with the Gmail app on my droid charge. Before I begin, know that I have experienced this across 3 roms (humble, gummy, infinity) and with two different droid charge devices. Basically, when I hit the send button on an email, it just grays out and doesn't do anything. This usually happens after 2-3 successful sends. It doesn't freeze or give any errors, the send option just becomes inaccessible. Choosing to send through the menu button option doesn't do anything too. The messages don't even go into the outbox, it just sits there and saves it as a draft after I exit. Please tell me I have just overlooked some obscure setting.
What I have tried to fix it unsuccessfully:
Clearing all data and cache for the gmail app
Uninstalling and reinstalling/updating the app
Removing the screen filter app from my phone (read about some possible interference with this app)
Wiping Cache and Dalvik via CWM
Restarting the phone, and also after each of the methods above
What has worked:
Wiping my phone via CWM or Odin (factory, not just cache and Dalvik) but this only works for the first few emails and goes back to the same issue.
I feel stuck and hate not sending emails. I know I can choose another app but I really just prefer the gmail app (that's not a crime is it?) Anyone else experience this? I have searched several forums and tried solutions listed there but with no luck.
this sounds strange... have you tried to add a different google account to your phone and see if it has the same issue with sending? you could then remove the affected one and re-add.
this is the only way to point the finger at the device... if the alt works then its your gmail profile. if it doesn't then it could be the stock .apk for gmail.
Tried that

I have tried with my personal and work gmail accounts as well as my "former" account and all three experience the same issue. I thought of that as well. I feel like I have tried everything, multiple accounts, different settings, updates, removed other applications and whatever else I could think of. Thanks.
Go to application data in the settings menu, find the gmail app and clear all of the caches you can. Re sync and it might work. I've had this issue and it cleared it up.

Push email is really bad on the HTC One X

Almost every message I get with the built in email app using Microsoft ActiveSync with my office Exchange server comes 5-10 minutes after the message's time-stamp. Coming from the iPhone 4S & Galaxy Nexus where every message was delivered within seconds, this is becoming a major concern. The GMail app is better (though not perfect) as messages usually arrive within a minute. I tried playing with the settings in the Email app and made sure that push was activated for both peak and off peak hours but the issues remains. Does anyone else have these issues and if so, is there any way to fix it? Thanks in advance.

I've struggled to fix this as well. The only advice i've gotten was to try a 3rd party app. I still have my e-mail setup on my old iPhone and my iPad, both get the e-mails pushed within a second of each other. My HOX can vary between 5-45 mins before it gets delivered. I have several exchange e-mails, all of them exhibit the same thing. I have a similar experience on my HP tablet that is running CM9. Judging by the number of threads that have complained about this, it seems that iOS simply handles Activesync better than Android. I'm still enjoying everything else about the HOX.

I really hope so, hopefully a fix can be found soon.
there is nothing to fix, it's a feature called SmartSync.
Go to Email setting, sync schedule change it Push, default is SmartSync.
More frequent you open email app, the more frequent the sync.
Check your sync settings. HTC uses a couple different things with Sync to improve battery life. One of them is peak hours. It'll push during "peak hours" and then switch to every 2 hours outside of them. They also have a smart-sync setting that I believe will sync more frequently in relation to how often you open and close the actual Mail app.
Check those settings first.
Thanks, i double checked everything and both peak and off peak are both set to Push. The phone isn't throwing any errors nor is exchange management console. I'll see how it performs today and give an update. So far this morning it has been pushing pretty consistently.
As I said in my OP, both peak and off-peak are set to push and NOT smartsync. That's not the issue.
I've gotten it to recieve @ about 5 minutes but that's as good as it gets for now...
side note I've gotten some really good LTE numbers in ATL... 42mbps
Go and get Touchdown in the market.
Problem solved.
I had to disable the Gmail app completely for my Gmail account to work with Microsoft exchange through the email app.
It was giving me errors with my syncing but I had to use google due to the play store etc.

Yeah I'm having problems with my gmail account as well. When I check to see if its synced it shows a red circle and apparently the sync isn't working so it's not just about push email its the syncing to google account. Not sure what the problem is. Im thinking it has something to do with the WiFi connection. It might break and its causing interruption in the sync
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I'm going to try leaving it on LTE for a little while...I have a feeling it might be an issue with the Wifi connection when the screen is off.
I'm experiencing a delay, as well. It's almost like Smartsync is still on even when it's off. My delays have been in the realm of a minute in most cases, but it's frustrating to hear new e-mails come in on my iPad and other phones and have this one get them last. It's such a great phone and this is such an important feature.
Quick update...If you go to your advanced wifi settings there is an option for Best Wifi Performance that is off by default. Since I enabled that, my push notifications seem to be coming in more quickly. I need to give it some more time to know for sure but so far so good!

This is what I did. So far, it's working 100%.
Please know, this will only work if you DON'T use the Gmail app.
1. Factory wiped the phone. Once started up, do not add your Google account yet.
2. Go into Settings and Apps and disable all your bloatware while you're here and make sure you disable the Gmail app. When you get out of it, it'll reload Sense. After this, go ahead and reboot your phone to be safe.
3. Now go ahead and go to Settings and Accounts and add your Google account. With Gmail disabled, it will not sync your email. Your choice if you want to sync Contacts.
4. Next, setup your Gmail via Microsoft Exchange via server method. Email and Username is your full email address. Leave Domain blank. The server address is m.google.com
5. When finished, set it up Push Email and not Smart Sync. If you did not sync your Contacts via Google, you can do it here also. Same with Calendar and Tasks.
Done!

Quick update...If you go to your advanced wifi settings there is an option for Best Wifi Performance that is off by default. Since I enabled that, my push notifications seem to be coming in more quickly. I need to give it some more time to know for sure but so far so good!

I think you might actually be onto something. So far, I have been getting e-mails pretty consistently after modifying this setting. It will be interesting to see how much it impacts battery life.
Anyone try K-9 Mail? I've been using that for a long time through several Android devices, push mail always works perfectly.

K-9 is not working for me, but Gmail is. haven't tried changing anything yet, just hopped on to see.
Really need some reliable push email. Might ditch K-9 and see if the native client works, but k-9 worked so great on the SGS2, I went to it straight away.
I'm also having push problems using the native gmail app. I posted in the other thread so won't repeat here but just wanted to check in in case somebody from HTC or att is reading these threads.

Can't use Google Now Reminders?

So I've been playing around with my nexus 5 and overall I'm pleased so far, however whenever I try to add reminders via Google Now, I keep getting the message "can't reach Google at the moment" (see screenshot)
This happens on WiFi and mobile data and have rebooted the phone to check if that may solve it (never know...).
I can add reminders via Google Keep however being able to add reminders directly from the home screen simply by talking is so much easier than adding them via Keep.
I've tried looking through the Google product forums however the content never seems to load on the page.
Anyone know if the reminders issue is a common bug or if there's a fix available for this?

You need to open the keep app first, so it signs in to your account.

Ive been having trouble too including a friend of mine. Think its a wider problem
I have the keep app up and running (as mentioned in OP) but its still not working unfortunately

I'm guessing people having problems with this are using a Google Apps account?
I have exactly the same issue with my gapps account but when using a standard gmail account all works as it should.
As mentioned, I think this is a wider issue, affecting SOME gapps accounts when used in conjunction with the N5. I say some as I have had a friend set up a test account for me in his gapps and it also worked perfectly.
I have spent hours going through my settings but have so far drawn a blank.
If anyone knows what is causing this, please share!
This happens to me, but it ONLY happens on wifi. As soon as I switch to mobile it works again.
I have the same problem

If only it was the case, sadly it's the same over 3g for me.
You using gapps or standard gmail?
Only solution for me is to use my non gapps account for Google Now.

I had this issue when I first got this phone about 2 days ago. I just tried to set a reminder on wifi and it worked for me. The only thing that has really changed are just apps and a few reboots, maybe the reboots did it? I honestly tried it out of the box and my service kept disconnecting, after that reboot all my issues were fixed. Doubt thatll fix the issue for you but who knows lol. I am also rooted, if that makesa difference
No amount of rebooting or even resetting to stock has cured this for me. I think it's server side - something to do with how the N5 talks to gapps servers. Only some though as I've tested it successfully with a friend's account. Odd.

I'm using a gapps account. Guessing by the responses it's something to do with this then. Ah well, will sit back and wait for ol' googs to trickle it down to gapps users then.
Not necessarily, it works with some gapps accounts and not others. Doesn't work with mine but had a friend set up an account for me on his and it worked perfectly. Its a very odd problem.

I'm using a regular Gmail account I'm still having this issue. It has nothing to do with whether or not you're using a Google Apps account

I'm on a Google Apps account too. Tried adding a second account from the same domain and that wouldn't work, but added a straight gmail account and it was fine. Very frustrating! I can't see anything obvious in the apps dashboard that migth be causing it.
tried Adding and Removing all my Google accounts but no luck through that method either.
Hi !
Undigging a very old thread, but I have the very same problem : I can't add a Google Now reminder with my GApps account, "can't reach Google at the moment".
I created a dummy Google account and it worked without any problem, instantly.
This thread is one year old, and I have been using Google Now reminders for a very long time without any problem. This bug just appeared some days ago. So what has happened to my GApps account ?
Has anyone here been able to fix this issue?
Thanks !
I'm having the same issue as well. Lollipop Nexus 4.
I find it very weird that this issue seems to have been going on for so long, without one definitive fix appearing. It started for me yesterday; I don't know if it's coincidence, but I fired up an old phone linked to the same gmail account in order to wipe it prior to selling on ebay. Then soon after doing that, I tried to set a voice reminder on my Nexus 5, and I got this error. I have never had a single problem before, but now I get the problem irrespective of whether I'm connected via wifi or 3g, at home or at work. Normal gmail account.
Tried turning Google Now cards off and back on again, tried clearing some related caches, tried signing out and back in to the google account.
Anybody got any suggestions.

Yep, I have one.
My problem was solved by setting my search domain to google.com.
I am in Belgium, and the default search domain for the Google App is the local one (google.be). Changing this setting in the google app worked like a charm. Of course, I don't have localized search results anymore though.
This setting is located in the Google app, under Settings > Accounts & Privacy > Search on google.com

Damn, you had my hopes up, but it didn't work for me; I changed the setting from local domain (google uk in my case) to google.com, no joy. Thanks for the reply though.
Maybe it's a clue, others have also suggested changing the search language to English (US) worked for them, it does point to certain areas of functionality as the cause.

Yes, in my case the problem is a combination of using a Google Apps account (with my own domain), and using a google.be domain for searches.
It seems that there are a lot of different problems that end up with the same error message. For some people, as you mentionned, just turning off Google Now then on again simply fixed it.
I'll be in France in some days, I'll try to witch back to using the local search domain (i.e. google.fr), and see how it goes. My Google Apps domain is a ".fr" domain, so there might be something to investigate here.
