Tether Without Use of Third Party Apps - HTC One S

I'm running Trickdroid 6.20 (T-Mobile US Variant) on my HTC One S. While the feature to tether from Android itself is there, whenever I try to use it, it redirects me to the tethering packages offered by T-Mobile. While I understand that Third Party Apps are available, I really like the simplicity of tethering from the Android operating system itself and I was wondering if there was any way to make this happen. All responses are appreciated!

Yeah, pay T-Mobile.
Or root and disable tethering manager in TiBu. Haven't tried on this phone but hopefully some other members can verify if that method works on this phone.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2

Coming from the Sensation, on the latest ICS update, Tmobile decided to block it by having a hidden tether apn. One of the chefs over there managed to fix it by deleting it from the apn.xml which was found in either framework or system UI apk.

just wanted to follow up on this - I downloaded the APN Patch that GROGG had made for the sensation however I noticed the release number is different (obviously not intended for the HOS)
anyone flashed his patch successfully? or have a HOS catered file?
Thanks in advance!

First, some background. I'm a seasoned Linux developer, having contributed to wireless drivers in kernel, as well as writing documentation on the wireless subsystem. Don't take this post as some newb hoping that it's as easy as crapping my pants and having the nurse change them for me... That having been said....
I'm working on getting my Alltel CDMA Hero rooted.
I've started this page: Redacted for now... I'm still a new user. Mods, will someone PM me, I'll provide the link, then they could insert it for me?
where I will document all I learn along the way, as well as outlining what root methods I've tried and why/how they failed. If there is any information I could add that people think would help others to find a rootable exploit on this phone, just comment here.

Have you tried the root that supposedly works for ALL HTC 2.1 Devices?

Yes, the bootloader that shipped with 2.1 on my alltel hero does not show up as an adb/fastboot device following that procedure. I'm working on documenting each root method I've tried and why they didn't work. I just can't post links yet...

Ok after reading your page on what has been tried, you could try the 2.1 test. Ruu, also the newest .6 ruu, also has you tried the new root method from the evo/hero?

Any chance you can link me to those? I've tried searching and not had any luck. Is the new method the 'Root any 2.1 Android' one that requires you to fastboot then go to recovery, do a failed update.zip and replace it?

I tried that and it did not work. It uses an exploit from a Sprint customisation that does not exist on the Alltel version.

Still alive... just moved and don't have internet available at home yet. I've begun trying to exploit the adb in recovery hole, but, alas, not had any luck. I've been working on a script to make the process much more automated in windows (the linux version works fine for me as far as what it is supposed to do/not do, etc)...
Not really getting anywhere so far.
On an aside, I read about a null pointer exception in tun.ko. I've been playing with metasploit and have successfully tcp/shelled my phone with it, but not figured out how to escalate the shell...

need some advice on what ROMs to choose from

Hey everyone,
I have a HTC Hero CDMA phone from alltel...ya i have yet to go to another carrier since they are not the best at getting the best technologies first but anywho....
I am new to the whole rooting process and figuring out what roms to choose from.
I understand the basic concepts and all but need pointed in the right direction.
I have already rooted my phone gaining the super permissions required when changing settings in the phone. In addition i have made a back-up of my current rom via Rom Manager (Clockwork) or nandroid back up as everyone says in case something should go wrong. I have backed up all contacts and apps so that i may re-install them later. The version of android i have is 2.1 or eclaire.
The main question is what roms are available to me and a list of the detailed procedure..any help would be great. Thanks

hi mate!
well if you want to select some roms the best thing that you can do its try some of themm...
what criterion should follow?
judge by yourself.. for example:
if you are a HTC sense lover you can try some roms that have sense 2.1 or 2.2(talking about sense, not of android version )
but if you can to disregard of the sense environment you can try cyanogenmod ROMS... (available 2.3.3 gingerbread in CM7)
THERE are several roms to try.. thake this link for to read about...
If you concentrate on the number of visits of the thread of the ROM you will know if it is more popular or not, if not ... I advise you to open a new thread in the section of A*Q AND to ask...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=643
sorry for my poor english LOL... i´m only a humble spanish developer
Will the cryogen 7 work for my phone even though I'm running Android eclaire 2.1???
Where can I find the HTC sense 2.1 or 2.2....

Best advise anyone can give you is test out different rom/kernal/radio combos till you find something you love. Im a rom addict constantly looking for that new high. I seriously am changing roms twice a week and radios about every two weeks. Just have fun with it bro.
Do I need anything else before I flash...I've backed up Rom, apps, data,...etc...do I need a radio too it should I worry about that....

1-- root your device (obtain superuser toot access)
2-install the recovery menu
3-for to flash another radio or another kernel deppends...
there are radios for to flash from recovery... or from fastboot...
browse it in hero cdma android dev. section...post here if you don´t found it

Ok, are you saying that you are rooted and need a nice unbloated rom, or are you saying you failed to root using the AHK and need help with that?
If you are looking for a new rom that isnt bloated, my favorite for that is Virtuous Unity (sense 3.0)

Yes indeed successful root I am guessing because everything is availible, no longer get the default att wifi hotspot message I received with stock os when you don't have the appropriate data plan. I do appreciate the help can't waitto check those out! I just need to learn why I chose this phone vs my bbbold9700.
-with the currently installed ROM I get tons of force close message for rommanager
-intermittent signal loss of all data sources(wifi and data network) almost always failing to load internet pages. No Facebook or other APp notifications weather clock doesn't update.
I need some newbie guides, understanding my phone and what it can do will really help me.
Also if I can get a point in the right direction to reloading a new ROM with the AHK recovery, for I have a uncommonly tiring work week and a newborn son, I have no time to search on my home PC, so thank you in advance.
I know this phone is better than that bb9700 I just need help uncovering why. Thx

I would suggest that you try some roms to see what you like. Try a Sense 2.1 like ClearDroid or Rum Runner, a Sense 3.0 Rom like Virtuous Unity or RCMix and an AOSP Rom like GingerBeast or Ninja. There are so many good roms but only you can decide what works best for you.

radio/ril changes are not necessary.
Easiest way to flash for the first time is through the app Rom Manager.
Reading through this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033353 gives most of what you are gonna need to start out.

I believe that a "full wipe" is factory data reset along with clear cache and wipe Dalvik cache (in recovery). If you want to make sure to get everything, you can go into mounts and storage (in recovery) and format everything other than SD card plus the aforementioned wipe Dalvik cache, which is in recovery under advanced . Hth.

thats the beauty of android. hit the market, and you will find about 1000 replacement keyboards
The default keyboard for ninja is swype, I personally don't like it and stick with the stock gingerbread keyboard(also included in ninja)
no hay de queso no mas de papa
I figured that out just a while ago, glad because swipe may be faster but tapping seems faster for me. Love the stock keyboard layout!

With ninja you can use swype or default its up to you.
I personally tried the other ROMs and they are OK, but ninja is so smooth its my favorite.
They say if your not suffering with dropped signal or issues there is no need to update out change the radios.

On the Galaxy II on tmo the wifi calling is built in the rom and you have to have the sim card the supports the wifi calling but this is ICS and I could be mistaken .

Does there appear to be a WiFi calling APk file in the system/ app folder? I'm not sure what it would be called, but you can probably ID it via the icons appearance. I know on the Sensation it was something like HTC-dsp-gb.apk.

[Q] Root vs. No Root for a Sensation Noob

I've had an original Motorola Droid the last 2 years, finally finished my contract and just bought a used Sensation 4G off contract with T-Mobile... allowing me to change phones more often than every 2 years... it felt like prison!
I rooted my Droid, and liked the ways I could customize it and clean off bloatware that I never used. I wanted to free up as much memory as I could because the Droid didn't have a lot to start with.
The Sensation has even more bloatware, and for now, I'm not so much interested in being able to flash a new ROM as I am to just be able to delete the stuff I don't want. So I have some questions...
I used HTC's Bootloader Unlock tool and now the phone is unlocked. It thought that may allow me to delete apps... but no such luck.
Is there another way for me to do this... or is it still necessary to root the phone?
If I do need to root it... what is the easiest way for me to do it?
Should I re-lock my bootloader, or is it OK to leave it unlocked?
With ICS being pushed out to the Sensation in June, how will my unlocked bootloader or rooted status affect that? Or should I just flash an ICS ROM and not deal with the OTA update?
If I were to flash an ICS ROM... which one is the most stable and most highly recommended?
If I were to keep my current stock ROM for now... is it possible to put a 3rd party launcher, like ADW Launcher Pro to replace Sense?
I realize it's a lot of questions... but I've been digging around online to find answers and can't seem to find what I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I can answer some of your questions. As far as I know, you will have to root your phone to delete (or freeze) bloatware. What app were you using on your Droid to do this? I think you should leave your bootloader unlocked. I don't even bother with official updates because the custom roms run so well. I am currently running CoinDroid 1.1.0 and it is amazing! It is Android 4.0 and also Sense 4.0. You can always install ADW but it will not replace everything Sense. It will replace the launcher but other parts of Sense will remain (such as lock screen and certain apps like calculator, calendar, etc.). The following threads might be helpful to you:

Thanks for some great info...
I'll root and install an ICS ROM that's available out there. I appreciate the answers and am interested in any advice I can get.
Yea just follow the s-off guide, the revolutionary method makes things very easy. You dont even have to worry about rooting, just s-off, install custom recovery and then installing a rooted rom will root the phone.
Also bear in mind to install an ics rom you will need the latest 3.32 firmware flashed - also very easy just follow the guides.
Good luck !
