OLD INFO FOR POSTERITY'S SAKE FOLLOWS

First, some background. I'm a seasoned Linux developer, having contributed to wireless drivers in kernel, as well as writing documentation on the wireless subsystem. Don't take this post as some newb hoping that it's as easy as crapping my pants and having the nurse change them for me... That having been said....
I'm working on getting my Alltel CDMA Hero rooted.
I've started this page: Redacted for now... I'm still a new user. Mods, will someone PM me, I'll provide the link, then they could insert it for me?
where I will document all I learn along the way, as well as outlining what root methods I've tried and why/how they failed. If there is any information I could add that people think would help others to find a rootable exploit on this phone, just comment here.
Added per request http://pat.erley.org/Phone/AlltelHero
Have you tried the root that supposedly works for ALL HTC 2.1 Devices?
EDIT:
Figured I should link you after making that comment.

Yes, the bootloader that shipped with 2.1 on my alltel hero does not show up as an adb/fastboot device following that procedure. I'm working on documenting each root method I've tried and why they didn't work. I just can't post links yet...

Ok after reading your page on what has been tried, you could try the 2.1 test. Ruu, also the newest .6 ruu, also has you tried the new root method from the evo/hero?

Any chance you can link me to those? I've tried searching and not had any luck. Is the new method the 'Root any 2.1 Android' one that requires you to fastboot then go to recovery, do a failed update.zip and replace it?

I tried that and it did not work. It uses an exploit from a Sprint customisation that does not exist on the Alltel version.

Still alive... just moved and don't have internet available at home yet. I've begun trying to exploit the adb in recovery hole, but, alas, not had any luck. I've been working on a script to make the process much more automated in windows (the linux version works fine for me as far as what it is supposed to do/not do, etc)...
Not really getting anywhere so far.
On an aside, I read about a null pointer exception in tun.ko. I've been playing with metasploit and have successfully tcp/shelled my phone with it, but not figured out how to escalate the shell...

Yes, this is the first time someone actually wants CityID. It's the only thing stopping me from applying the latest update.zip. I've been searching for quite a few hours to no success. Every search I've tried to find the stock CityID app has only led to how to remove it. These all would have been helpful to see before I deleted it through Titanium rather than renaming it. The couple of installs I found have been for other phones, none of which have allowed me to bypass the step in Recovery. Would anyone kindly upload the stock CityID, or even point me in the direction of it. I'm assuming I can just place it back in /system/app/ correct?
I'll add my request to this as well so this topic stays near the top!
I'm also stuck at this error trying to install the new update.zip! I've been doing searches as well and haven't been able to find CityID.apk anywhere!
I'm also assuming that you can just do an adb push of the apk back into the /system/app directory.... fingers crossed!
Try the HeyItsLouFroyo Rom thread in the dev section. He has a zip file of removed apps. Didn't look. But I think it's in there since he said he removed it.

interested in this as well.... a nice looking slider on Verizon that's NOT a Moto? sign me up.
Rmarkwald - I read somewhere that there is at least temporary root using something called "visionary". I haven't bothered looking into it yet though.
Nope!
There is not currently a method of rooting the Merge.
There is however a way to get Temp Root through a program called Visionary.
Z 4 temp root also works!!!! Wondering if Desire CDMA rev x root through adb will work for the merge.... went around rev x n once I acquired root I ran revoked to finish..... just a thought but really want to figure this out. Pm me for help or an answer
after purchasing a new HTC Merge last weekend I promptly went foraging for Root and Roms. I was not dissapointed.
While the procedure for rooting the merge is complicated, I followed instructions I found at 2fastroms dot com and gained S=off using the superoneclick and goldcard method.
once rooted, I was pleased to discover that a leaked copy of the gingerbread 2.3.4 with HTC Sense 2.1 rom was available for download, so I went right ahead and installed that.
I have to say, I am very pleased with the performance of this phone with this operating system. gingerbread is blazing fast and the sense2.1 ui has some nice features as well. while there arent a lot of custom roms available out there, at least you can have gingerbread, which is more than other phones can say.
here it is, just released at US Cellular. the OFFICIAL 2.3.4 update right from the horses mouth!
Dont need to ROOT to install this!

sorry, I cant post links because I am a noob!
I have the HTC Inspire running stock 2.3.3
I have searched, and tried everything, but nothing is working. I have tried both methods available though ace-hack-kit-v12.3. I have also tried Bubby's one click GUI, as well as simple one click, super one click, and gingerbreak for good measure, and yet nothing seems to work.
ace hack kit works
Ace hack kit doesn't achieve downgrade, it hangs at sending zip file, and then on the alternate root meathod it reboots without downgrading.

If you're using 12.3 and downgrade method two, there is a small typo in the script. There was a new version of the script posted that should get you back in business. You need to just download the new script and put it in the folder where the original was.
The below one worked for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
I had the same problem as you allenrb2. I ran the Ace Hack Kit v12.3 and it would just freeze on step 2 when it is trying to install the zip file. To solve this problem, I just went on my other computer and ran the Ace Hack Kit from there. It went just fine no hanging at that zip file in step 2. So maybe doing it on a different computer will work for you, like it did for me.

The best radio is the one that works the best for you. Everyone has different experiences with radios depending on device, ROM, location. Best things to do. One go to the inspire radio thread and read what people have been using and experiment...flash a season and give it a couple days to see how it does then change if need be. OR secondly I would see if my ROM has a separate Q and A thread and go there for suggestions.

While I'm seeing an influx of new comers to the MyTouch4G section, most likely due to newer phones coming out and picking these up cheap.
I'd like to remind you of a couple of things prior to just jumping in and rooting your phone.
Disclaimer: i am not a mod or an admin, just a humble "helper outer"
First Things First.Rooting one's phone is not to be taken lightly. When you root your phone to are basically giving your self SU access to the /system files of your phone. While this allows for GREAT expansion of the devices capabilities, you need to under stand that it can also brick your device in a heart beat. I know a guy who lives in St.Louis who said all he did was flash a custom font, via an application, on his rooted droid 2 and it bricked. You need to read, and understand what you are getting into. Because when the rubber meets the road you are the only one who can save your phone.
Secondly and just as important as anything else else.please install the ADB drivers at a minimum. TrueBlue_Drew has put together a very simple walk-through with video for this http://bit.ly/q7MP9t. Please take the time to learn the basic commands and what they do.
Third, and this can prevent some headaches down the roadplease go and check which eMMC chipset you have. Our phones where made in two different places, and have two different Chip set serial numbers. One of them is problematic and one of them is pretty safe. Please take time to verify which chipset you have prior to flashing anything. And yes it can be done without root access [http://bit.ly/y2zmdr]. Please see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Fourth, and this is where the rubbers meets the road. A)
You need to decide which root method is for you. There are two different proven methods out there. One is known as the root.sh method. This is the simplest method. the long and short of it is this. You download a packet, extract a folder to your SD Cards root directory. Then you download, install and run a program called VISIONary. after you do that you enter a simple command or two to run the script in the extracted folder. you can find that method here root.sh method now this method will work to turn your phone into a rooted s-off phone. and is super easy i used this method to root my phone with s-off before i even left the T-Mobile store when i bought the devices. However it only turns off the security flags. IF you flash the PD15IMG to return to a stock fashion it will remove all SU rights.
B)
the second method is a bit more entailed but completely removes the security flags. IT's called ./gfree method. Now you need to be careful because this will root a phone with a bad eMMC chipset. Meaning it will be easier for you to brick your device. If that happens you own a 200-500 USD paper weight. And as of currently there is no sure fire way to recover from it. you can find more on that method here ./gfree rooting method.
c)
ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE STOCK 2.3.4 (GINGERBREAD) ROM
you must downgrade to 2.2.1 before you can root your phone.
Please see this link http://bit.ly/rugejM.
d)
if you do not know what you are doing i would advise against the OneClickRoot for rooting ANY phone. It's a simple path to enable someone with no knowledge to root their device.
We are glad you have chosen to make XDA your source for all of your hacker needs. But please take some time and read and study prior to doing anything. We'd hate to see you root and brick your phone because you over looked something.
the Q&A section is used for just that Questions and Answers
the Accessory section is for just that Accessories devoted to the HTC Glacier
the Development Section is just that a section where you can find ROMS, Kernels, hacker, and PC/Mac/Linux guides
the App section is just that a place for us to talk about add ons and applications
everything else falls under the general section.
hope you enjoy your stay here.
Finally, and i wanted to post this separately
please do not be afraid of the search button or Google. Chances are if you've encountered a problem, or have a question. Someone has already asked it, or solved it.
Please watch this

If it does go bad there is good chance you can exchange it just don't tell them anything about you rooted the phone. I sent my phone in rooted with S off with a different problem and had no problem getting an exchange now I have this 2.3.4 which is not too bad but still figuring out the downgrade process I miss all the privileges with being rooted.

Great guide! It helped me with several questions I had, I was even able to check if I had a bad eMMC, I'm lucky I have the good one \o/
My phone came with 2.3.4, I really want to root to remove all the junk that comes preinstalled.
I have a question, if I used the root.sh method (which seems the safest), after downgrading of course. If I flash a rooted stock 2.3.4 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264704
Would I loose my S-OFF? Also to install the ClockworkMod recovery, is it the same way as other phones? ex can I just install it using the ROM manager?
Also is it really necessary to flash the engineering bootloader?
thanks for this great tutorial!

Once you have s-off, you will keep s-off until you manually turn it to s-on. So to answer your question.
No if you flash the rooted 2.3.4 of the stock OS you will keep s-off.
Yes you can flash it via the recovery image, without any problems. Just make sure to do a back up first.
It's not really needed, but encouraged as you can flash specific sections of the OS, or recovery image if needed.
Thank you very much for your help!
Everything went smoothly, now I'm in 2.3.4 rooted with bloat and ad free ^_^
The root.sh method didn't work for me though, but gfree worked like a charm (was kind of scared using it, but since I already checked my eMMC was good, I went ahead and worked perfectly!)

This tool will automatically deodex your AT&T One X if its rooted and has Busybox installed (one click root tool already does all of this for you). This should make it easier for folks to install modifications since we don't have a CWM .zip of deodexed files quite yet.
http://briefmobile.com/auto-deodex-tool-for-htc-one-x-att
Also, developers are encouraged to take a look at the batch commands. You guys can make custom ROM installers and such with very little effort. This will work until we have CWM.
