move 2 sd question - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was playing around with my recently purchased tf300t, installing numerous versions of a move2sd card app and not having any sucess getting them to work. I finally stubbled across a thread asking just about what I am asking. In the thread, someone states that with all the free space on the internal sd, why do you really need a move2sd app.
So I want to ask those who have a tf300t, do you also use a move2sd app.
If so, why do you use it with so much internal memory available and which app do you use and how do you get it work properly.
Thanks.
B

Since Android 4, you can no longer move apps to SD AFAIK
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app

android devices usually have there internal memory partitioned into 2 separate parts the first is a small internal memory where the apps get installed and a bigger one where data goes, the tf300 hasnt been partitioned so it just has one big internal memory so there is no need for apps that move apps to the sd card and it doesnt have one

I personally use the internal storage strictly for apps. I use a micro SD for any personal media. Just easier for me to keep organized that way. I find that internal storage gets too cluttered.

thats exactly what i do lmao

definitely dont use this any more...haven't since i sold my original moto droid. that thing had like half a GB of storage and it was completely necessary to handle my 70+ apps.
not any more though.

I too feel its not needed but for people who think it is not possible ..here is a way using link2sd

[Q] How to use APP2SD in asus

hi there...
i am newbie here i want to ask to you, i have an asus slider but i think it has same system with transformer, but it cannot use app2sd, when i click the on sd card tab, it says "The device does not have a real primary external storage, or the external storage is emulated. Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device"
i don't know how to repair it... please tell me if you know how to make it normal
thanks
Honeycomb doesn't support moving apps to the external sd card. LINK2SD however does allow a symbolic link to apps on an external card, which does look like you moved the app to external. The issue is that if you partition your sd card, you will probably have to reboot to see the second partition. I'm not sure, but you might have yo be rooted to use LINK2SD.
You cold try this

App2sd
Wouldn't you want to use app2sd because you are running out of space on your internal card and you want to install more apps?
With most of the 16/32 GB available for apps i don't see a need.
i have to highly disagree i outgrew the 32 gb the day i got it ( to the op search there are scripts and such to do what you want its not just install and go and you need to be rooted i believe to do it).
if i install all the apps and games i use on a daily basis i would need 2 tf101's 32gb and the other stuff i use occasionally still would need a external hard drive to store extra stuff on to install when i needed it. and its always made me laugh when this gets ansewered like "theres 16 or 32 gb on the tf101 you dont need apps2sd on a tablet with honeycomb" or anything to that effect. especially considering the games today steadily climbing in size i have seen em with well over a gb installed for one game, and im sorry i dnt digg having to uninstall and install something just to play a different game.
for alot of people it may be plenty but i think people might want to refrain from assuming everyones needs are similar to yours. i and many others do need apps2sd or something similar and i couldnt do without it.
^^^Yeah I see your point.

im not sure i understand your question. i dnt use 2 different 32gb devices, basically just an example of the space requirements i would need.
32gb just isnt enough, and yeah its a bunch of apps i have 200+ apps backed up on titaniumbackup. i use my tf101as a tool as well as a toy and i guess pullin double duty requires some storage space
Need moaaar space too. :/
It's actually not too hard to run out of space while a lot of games nowadays take up to 3GB... Take some Music and some Movies to that and tada...
Also I'm using a lot of emulators and the Roms take theire space too. TF101 + Ps3 Controller + HDMI = FUN everywhere!
(Please don't start to tell people what to put on theire tablet and what not now. You are welcome NOT to use your tablets full potential!)
Anyway... any solutions? Got TF101 4.0.3 Revolver. Android Assistant says: "There are no apps to move blabla". I'm kinda sure there was a time, when I was able to move them. If I remember right, there actually was a "move to SD" button in the native Apps-Menu of Android.
I'm pretty sure that the only solution is to use link2sd along with the DirectoryBind app. You move the apps with link2sd and those huge 3G data files with DirectoryBind.
I have a 64G microSD installed and with both of those apps in use quite a bit of free internal space now.
Warning: As of Android 4.2+ DirectoryBind no longer works because of the file system changes to support multiple users. Just in case you're running a custom ROM.

Note 10.1 users, Is Apps to SD possible?

Hi, i use a Galaxy S3 and have used many roms but it's not possible to move apps to the sd card, is this the same on the Note? The reason i ask is because i need more than 16GB of storage for all my apps, if it is not possible i will buy the 32GB version if yes i will get the 16GB with a 32GB micro sd.

the same ordeal with the SGS3, so might as well get the 32GB
I believe that it is possible but only if you root your tablet. I am not positive on this so wait for someone else to verify what I am saying. However it seems that the difference between 16gb and 32gb is only $50 and that ain't bad in my opinion.
I have heard it's not possible with ICS. I hope I'm wrong.
There is no option to move apps to the SD card anymore.
Sent from my Galaxy Note
It's one of tablets thing.
Even with ICS you can't do that. Form side it better for fast and safe replacing of sdcards.
I have the note 5.3 with it I can add apps to the sdcard.

Well most (Batman, Amazing Spiderman and so on) games are about 1>2GB in size + many small apps i use + Sygic with maps of countries i have to visit for work on a regular bases (Belgium, The Netherlands, France and Germany), add to that you only get 11.25GB and my S3's memory is almost full.
I will have to wait for the 32GB/3G version it is not available yet here.

No broken apps, the ability is taken out in devices launched with ICS/JB, devices updated to ICS/JB still have the ability to move apps to SD it seems.

There should be no need for an app to be moved to SD. HOWEVER, an app SHOULD be able to have its data relocated - if it can't the app is broken.
No *app* is large enough to justify moving to SD. However, if an app insists on its data being in the same location and can't be moved to external storage, that's a problem.
In fact, most likely, those apps already have their data on the "SD" - the problem is that on devices like this, the internal SD is indistinguishable from /data in terms of storage usage. If the app doesn't support moving data to external SD, that's a broken app.

I know that since ICS the memory layout has changed, in previous (GB) devices you had multiple partitions on the internal SD now this is gone and so is apps (data) to SD.
I'm not so sure about the term "broken apps" because in that case it means all apps are broken cause of all my 100 apps and games there is not a single one that can allocate data anywhere except internal sd. Google messed with this since ICS, it isn't a problem on the Galaxy Nexus or One X because they don't have memory expansion.
After thinking about getting the 32GB with a unknown wait time, i decided to for the 16GB Wifi/3G version i will skip Sygic on the Note since i don't see myself with a tablet on the windshield driving.
This is why I returned my 16gb. I have the 32gb one on the way now. With these Androidand gameloft games, it ddoesn't take long to use up 16gb of memory. Which is really only 11gb out the box. My nova3 alone is like 2gb. So I need larger storage space for all my games n apps. The games are the ones taking up the most space.
But I think the op means moving the data to external SD/memory card. So it'll free up space on internal storage/internal SD..which is really all merged now. So yeah, games store their data to internal SD. But if you have a microsd card installed, there's no way to move the largest part of game data to it to free up space on internal memory. That's my take on moving apps to SD. I know of the older methods. Like on my atrix. Still on froyo. I can move apps from internal storage(which was limited in size) to internal SD(which was larger in size). Or even move it to external. Lmfao I'm confusing myself now.

Yes, there is a way. Use Apps 2 SD and GL to SD apps. I moved a lot of the huge downloads for my games using those apps.

this is one advantage ios has over android. you can actually download the games on your computers and sync later. or you can sync, delete and reinstall later without having to redownload everything (unless there's an update). you can kinda do this in android, but it's not as automated.
Get link2sd
Use link2sd to move apps to external sd
...
Profit...
Sure it would be nicer if it was all built into the OS, but I think it takes less time to get link2sd and solve than problem than it takes to complain... I have a 16gb pad, and a 64gb MicroSD split half as fat32 and half as ext4... all my large apps go into the ext4 partition... so even though I have more than 16gb worth of apps/games, my internal storage is almost empty...

Can you possibly explain this process in a bit more detail, and maybe provide some pictures? I'm ordering mine today, but if this is true I'll just save some cash (and heartache with the lack of 32s being available) and purchase the 16+ an SD card.
Apps to Extsd
Use Root Explorer The paid version, works very well.

Could you guide me on how to do this? I got the 16gb note and a 32gb microSD card plugged in.
Oh and another note: how exactly does the storage work on this thing?
I hear all this about internal storage, internal SD and then the external SD (which I assume is the SD card I plugged in myself.

Flashable way to use sd card as primary storage?

I noticed when I briefly looked at the Note 10.1 that they have a flashable method to use sd card as the primary storage. Didn't see anything for the Infinity when browsing our sections and threads. Wondering if we have a flashable way to do this, a script to run, something. Thanks for looking!

why would you need this?
When downgrading / performing a clean install all of your internal storage gets wiped out - For example, when I applied the JB update I forgot to use OTA rootkeeper to make a backup, and hence lost root. I then downgraded to 9.4.5.30 via microSD, which wiped out everything, all data plus internal storage - and that means my Titanium Backup of all my apps and data included, including my Bard's Tale save game (and I was quite far along in the game).
If I had been able to save such data to the microSD Card it would not have mattered.
So, there is one scenario as to why you would want / need it.
I agree that backups should be on sd and I think titanium has that option.
You could also move the titanium folder to sd before wiping.
Yes, I know, I've been telling others how to get it working. Point is, though, I didn't remember to make that change initially b/c the tablet is so new to me, and I had no idea I would lose all my internal storage when I downgraded from JB to ICS.
Plus, if something were to happen and the device was not bootable, all my data stored on internal would be gone. Titanium backups are good and all, but the schedule I have set to run at 2 AM - if I did something critical that afternoon and it breaks, I've lost everything since after the scheduled backup.
It's really no different for me since I've had my BIONIC - same thing applies, but it is still a PITA to have to deal with internal storage that is potentially lost if you don't make a backup of some sort.
Also, TiBu is hanging on making a backup of my Bard's Tale app and data, to my SDCard, saying that there is not enough space - and the 16 GB card is 100% free of things except the TiBu backup of all the other apps, taking up less than 800 MB....
The main reason I want this on my Infinity is because I only have the 32gb version and this mod would allow me to use a 64gb card as internal storage. This mod allows you to have 64gb internal(by way of card) and 32gb external(by way of internal). I think this would be used by many many people, who have the 32gb Infinity, if we can get it working!!

SD Card

I have a SD Card in my phone but I cannot transfer any app to the sd card. I did this before for games and large apps. On my old phone, it would just move the app itself and leave the data on my phone.
I noticed the actual phone storage is /sdcard and the actual sdcard is /external1.
Is there a way to change this or work around it? I'm rooted if that helps.
I believe google actually removed the ability to do this on 4.0+ that said yes, i believe there are ways to do this still but it does require some hackery to make it work. I think cyanogenmod still can do this so once that rom is more ready for prime time that may be an easier solution. Someone else here likely has a better answer for you.

[Q] Swap File, External Apps Partion, etc.

Hello people,
I got my Xperia L a couple of days ago and I have it running successfully with Vengeance + Clean n Tweaked after a loooot of tries.
This is my first Android phone after HTC Wildfire! Loving it so far [Was uber slow out-of-the-box though]
Anyway I want to know how beneficial it is to create a swap file on the External SD card and use it. Does it make a big difference in performance? If yes how do I achieve this?
Secondly I really want to be able to move user apps to External Storage. I tried moving them from within the Clean Master app and it did work BUT when I restart my phone the Xperia Home(launcher) app keeps crashing(until the SD card is initialized I guess). The easy fix is to open the notification bar or something for a minute before going back into to the Home Screen. So yes this kinda works. Just want to know if there's a better way.
One idea comes to mind is making a separate ext2/3/4 partition on the External SD Card and using that for user apps. Will the home launcher still crash? I really don't want to use a custom launcher. If this is possible how do I do it?
I read about the mod to make External memory as Internal. Does everything work correctly with that? However if partitioning is possible I would prefer that as opposed to using the whole External SD Card as internal memory.
Lastly, since I don't have 10 posts yet I can't post to DEV threads yet so I want to thank people from about 10 to 15 different threads which I referred to in the last 24 hours. lol!
p.s. I have a SanDisk 32GB Class 10 Micro SD Card

Thanks for the reply. I read all about the app and I think It MIGHT cause trouble at some point so I'm gonna stay away from it for now. Maybe when I want to play a HUGE game I'll use it. Good to know how to!
Anyone wants to shed some light regarding the swap file question?
