Weak wifi signal aokp.ics. - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I get a very weak wifi signal after flashing.
40 dB...... pre flash.
60 DB........after flash from same location ( 4 feet from router.
Any ideas?

Yes I can back that claim up

From what I can tell, its all snake oil and Pygmalion effect.
The chipset is the same. All that has changed is the number being reported to the UI.
If you fire up something like netperf I'll lay money that the throughput on the link is just about the same for any of the available ROMs.
The "signal strength" reported by the chipset is "RSSI" Received Signal Strength Indication -- it isn't calibrated in any way for consumer devices other than to make the UI look good. The link speed isn't a good indication of throughput either.

I'm sure you are correct. But where I used to get 6 available AP's, I now only get 2 with much weaker signal. My 5 ghz guest network will not even show up at 15 ft from router. At 5 ft away (with no obstructions or interference) I get 25% signal. I'll test throughput, although throughput seems excellent near router. Almost seems as if Rx power is low. I lose AP's at half the normal distance. My gs2 picks up the same AP with 75% signal, from the same location.

The signal definitely is weak for me despite what people say. My wifi disconnects in places where it used to work fine before (for example when on my bed with gingerbread I would be connected with 1 bar, but with ics its constantly disconnecting and reconnecting at 0 bars

Did it show up under GB? I've never seen my high-band 802.11n at all, but I always assumed it was that that I was using the wide-band modulation. If it was showing up, are you using 20- or 40-MHz channels?
I'm definitely interested in finding out if we have lost functionality going to ICS.

This doesn't surprise me. Internally, in Java, the "bars" are set to be 4 between a reported RSSI of -55 and -100. Stations that are below the lower threshold aren't reported in the UI. It appears to me that ICS ROMs generally report a RSSI to the Java world that is ~10 units lower than GB ROMs do.
frameworks/base/java/android/net/wifi/WifiManager.java
You might want to try
Code:
# wpa_cli scan
# wpa_cli scan_result
to see what the driver is reporting.
I've been tempted to just add 10 in the framework and enjoy all the reports about how much better a ROM it is.
I still need to get netperf onto a GB ROM and do a little more testing. I think the sad answer is that the RF design, in general, is not good on the SGS4G, resulting in both poor WiFi and GPS performance.
Testing with netperf shows that the stock GB rom displays about "one bar" more signal than ICS AOKP. In this brief test (five, 10-second runs for each AP) the throughput for a relatively weak AP is about 10% lower for ICS than GB. However, the throughput for a strong AP is about 10% higher for ICS.
Conclusion: WiFi measured performance is comparable between GB and ICS.

I take it back..... 5 ghz network missing issue was on my touchpad. I get mixed up sometimes.
wireless range is poor , but in my small house it works. even a weak signal on this rom seems as fast as good GB signal.
This rom is otherwise awesome!
Thanks for your help

Something I've noticed about Quadrant.

I'm not sure if this has been addressed, but I noticed that quadrant scores are different depending on if you are connected to wifi or 3g/4g data. On wifi, I get a score of around 2400-2500. On 4g, I get 2700-2800. This is just more evidence piling up on the already known facts about how unreliable quadrant is as a benchmark program. This proved to be the same on my mt4g.
I've noticed that review sites that run Quadrant(no idea why they still do as there is no support for dual core configurations) tend to run some phones on wifi, and some on their data connection. The scores are always noticeably higher when connected to data compared to wifi.
On other benchmark softwares like smartbench 2011, antutu, etc. the scores are not noticeably effected by the type of data connection the phone is using. This is how it should be, since these are system benchmarks.
Quadrant is so out of date. I only use Smartbench.
WOW no kidding! I just turned off wi-fi, gps, and auto sync and got over 2700! Most times I would get somewhere around a 2400. Never thought that stuff would make a difference.
On 4g I got 2649 and on Wi-Fi I got 2938... not saying you are wrong, but it is different all around no matter what... its all hoobla whoopty doo doos

You can't make that assumption through just one test. You have to take the average of multiple tests in order to get an accurate number. Especially since quadrant is so inconsistent.

okay this time around I got 2836, 2961 on Wi-Fi...went back to Wi-Fi after the 4g test and got a 2483
and on 4G 2831,2871 going back after Wi-Fi 2655
Like I said its all over the place and all whoopdy doos...

[Q] Higher battery drain with Wifi off?

I've noticed with at least my Infuse that whenever I have my Wifi on I have significantly lower battery drain than when I have it off. I'm currently running Aeon 1.4 with Entropy's kernel but have noticed this with other kernels and ROMs that I've used. Screenshot attached showing that pretty much as soon as the wireless is turned off the battery usage takes a sudden drop and continues until it comes back on. Is there an issue with my phone or are there some settings that I should be aware of and try changing to remedy the issue?
I tried searching around before I made this thread and couldn't find anything that had the same issues I've been having. Any input would be appreciated.

I see what you are talking about, however I think the issue is less with your wifi being off as it is with your cell signal being low. Looking at the cap you provided I can see where in the second wifi off period you could think that the wifi was your problem, but look at the first. you have the same drain with the wifi off as you do with it turned on (practically). Change the modem. Find one that works great in your area, because with the modems for the infuse newer is not always better. Also you can try one of those little RF booster things that go on your phone behind the battery to boost signal. I know they seem like a scam, but they do sometimes give just enough boost to keep a phone from searching for signal when it should have great signal. But try flashing a new modem first.

I'll have to start looking around for a new modem, currently I'm on UCLB3; my only concern is this is the only modem to provide me with a quick GPS lock and I don't want to lose that ability. Thanks for the suggestion
Check the modem thread. I had some great luck with an older one (k1 I think it was). I have since passed on my infuse to my son, and I can ping his location within 15 yards in under 2 minutes. I have a post over there where I got 5 days of battery life and it should tell you the modem I was using as well as rom and other info about the setup I had.

Giving FTL Launcher Lite a shot, if it doesn't work out or if it's not recommended I'll try out Launcher Pro, thanks again!
I tried it for a couple days, was not my cup of tea. But it had outstanding reviews so I gave it a shot. I think I ended up going to LPP or ADW with the infuse.
A few other things to check are: Make sure your phone is not always scanning for wifi networks.
If you are in an area of low cell signal and don't need your phone to call people, flip on airplane mode.
Turn off auto brightness... use the power widget (or the 17 notification toggle tweak) to change your brightness between 10% (low light) 20% (medium light) and full (when in bright daylight conditions).
There is somewhere a tweak to turn off H+ and 3G when not in those service areas, find it, use it. (Google *#*#4636#*#* or is it *#*#3646#*#*... idfk one of those...
Check your sns sync schedule for short times. Set them to a longer interval or off. You should check ALL sync schedules for this, calendar is a major culprit of this, even if you don't have one setup.
Install "badass battery monitor" use it to check wake locks and battery voltage and temp. It has a great "battery sucker" feature that will tell you what is draining your battery.
NEVER USE AUTO APP KILLERS! They do more harm than good. Hold home and open the task manager and kill the apps yourself. It will take 15 seconds and if you do it for 3 days a few times a day, it becomes a habit. Don't be all grrr and do it 60000000 times a day. Just every now and then.
If you have installed a few apps and launchers that didn't work out for you, I would say booting into recovery and clearing the cache or a reset are in order. Uninstalls rarely remove everything they should and leave behind bits of code that will suck your battery like a hidden mosquito you can never swat.
Probably the most helpful tidbit anyone can give you is to not stress over the battery life constantly. You have a wonderful device that you have spent a lot of time customizing to look the way you want it to look. The more you stress over the battery the more you will check it, turning on that big beautiful screen sucking even more life from it. Making user error the major battery sucker in the equation... You wanted that beautiful beast, enjoy it.
Sorry so long, but trying to be thorough and helpful. These are the major tips I used to get 5 days from my phone. But honestly after day 2 or 3 I started really cracking the whip and refused to use my phone for anything other than texting.

Its been about the same, possibly a bit better. I've been using the battery app you mentioned to find what's causing the drain and kinda working with it from there. However I was in an area with roaming for a week so I can't give an accurate conclusion.
The BCM4330's standby drain is extremely low. In addition, when active, it requires FAR less energy per byte of data transferred than the cell radio.
OF COURSE background syncs are going to use less power over wifi than over the cell radio.
The whole "turn your wifi off" to save power became invalid over a year ago. (Exception: If the wifi chip misbehaves, such as the infamous BT-AMP bug, but I haven't seen that in many months.)
Here a couple of threads I found regarding this mystery drain.
From the past:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224052&highlight=battery
Here is the i9000 battery drain issue I was refering to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696
The last few pages hinted that the problem may have been fixed in later gb builds.
Our custom kernels was based of Roger's 2.3.3.
Would the bug be still in it?
Could this be why we (at least me anyway) are still seeing this?

Does anyone have less bars after installing the ICS leak?

I know get 1 to 2 bars almost everywhere. Nothing else has changed in my phone or my life. What can be causing this and how can i fix this?

I dont think much has changed signal wise. I do however notice wifi is amazing on ICS. This one out of three android devices I own gets best reception wifi wise. Also, dont want to sound rude but should really search for a fourm thread that has been already been made about ICS bugs/issues. Please post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780142 I'm just letting you know what a MOD or DEV would tell you here. Making new threads seem to clutter up the forum and people dont see the more in important threads that get bumped daily. For instance, I have almost 650 posts and I've only started one maybe two threads cuz everything can almost be found using search option. Sorry to hear you have bad data reception but I am sure you can somehow tweak/mod/make it better by searching all over the place. Good luck!

Bars mean nothing, they're just graphical representations. Settings -> About Phone -> Status will display a "Signal Strength" line. This will have a number, the lower the dBm, generally, the better. You could be getting the same reception, just the leak is handling the signal better or representing it differently graphically via the signal bars.

Much like Apple's "Death Grip" fix was..... they simply changed the graphical algarythm for the signal bar display a.k.a. - bar 4 had a larger signal window before it would drop to bar 3...
It's all in the numbers.

Same here, on any rom/kernel combo whether its TW or AOSP and whether I use Faux, KT747, LK, or the regular AOSP and TW kernel I have super slow speeds on my WiFi. Granted its only 12Mbps, 1.2 to 1.6 MBps, but unless I am sitting beside the router I can't get full speed and even when I am beside it I only rarely get full speed. It usually jumps from 80 KBps to 200KBps, sometimes it'll get a little higher but immediately drops back down. On my laptops, kindle fire, and my girlfriends S3 it will max out and stay maxxed out until the download is done but for some strange reason mine won't.

Sometimes going into router interface and changing the DNS to Open DNS will fix it. Mine same speed as PC using 2 Wire DSL. Phone may not like the DNS server you are using.
I flashed a backup of another ROM and WiFi was still slow so I'm thinking its a hardware issue.
Thanks for the responses, I'll play around tomorrow.

I have no earthly clue how to mess with the DNS server. I have never had any experience with routers or high speed internet until 6 months ago, I live in the sticks and Charter wanted $45809.27 exactly to bring me cable. I just loved how they added the 27ยข.
Anyway, it seems like we will have very similar routers, I am taking it you have AT&T and so do I. From what I've read they're the only ones who really use the 2 wire routers.

Is the low signal causing a problem or does it just look low in the status bar. I often find when switching ROMs that the "Strength Indicators" vary but when I switch them to show me the readings as text (dBm) the signal strength is fine.
Maybe you could try installing an application/widget which shows you the signal strengths with more accuracy than the status bar icon can portray and you may find that its all ok.
I have always found the wifi signal to be fine on all cm and aokp ROMs I have tried.
