CM10 is best for jellybean, i'd go with aokp for ics. Paranoid still has some major bugs to fix and i havent tried cm9 yet

it has 4G but yeah it isn't stable. Also if your going to flash one, go to the backup thread in the dev section for your IMEI and do that first.

nah, not really. Just different. Just with samsung keep in mind that odin is king.
also being newer to samsung, just read before you flash stuff.
I am amazed at the amount of people here that do not read and do things willy nilly and next thing you know they are crying because they cannot figure out how to fix their phone.

In my opinion I would stay on a stock or custom stock ROM. I just finished about 2 days of headache due to my IMEI going to 0 after using CM9. I will say that I've used CM10 and CM9. CM10 was glitchy, while CM9 was flawless from what I could tell right up until it all went wrong with my IMEI.

I am running cm10 as my daily driver, but it's not without its frustrations. For me, 4G data has been flawless. It's when the phone kicks over to 3G that data problem occur. Specifically, 3G data has erratic signal, periodic loss of connection, and general instability. However, when I'm in a 4G area, data is rock solid.
MMS is still an issue, as well as Bluetooth audio. But all in all, it runs great for a preview build. There haven't been any breakthroughs recently, so who knows how long it'll be before 3G data is stable. I'm thinking about returning to a stock rom for now just because I really need BT audio and will be going on a trip where I only get 3G.
What is the general feeling about which stock rom is most stable?

ya know, if you had done the EFS backup provided in the dev section, which has been available for almost a week now, you wouldn't have had a 2 day headache?
you would have written the EFS backup to the phone and been back where you started...

I have a question about restoring EFS and since I cant post in the dev forum yet, I will ask here...
How do you restore if you are using a windows machine and not linux. From my limited understanding, it seems as the commands in the various howto guides all pertain to Linux while some give commands to restore via Terminal Emulator on the phone. But what if Terminal Emulator is not installed... How do you install Terminal Emulator on a device with no IMEI ? Can a device with no IMEI still connect to market with WIFI ?

you can do it with windows, you can do it one of two ways
one is using the sdk toolkit and using adb.
the other way is copying your backup file to your phone and running the command through terminal emulator.
Yes wifi will still work with no IMEI allowing you to connect to the market and download a terminal emulator.
when he says linux, he means the command comes from the linux OS, but also because android of based off linux which is why it is used/works. He doesn't mean you have to run linux itself.

I read up on everything before taking the plunge with an AOSP ROM so I actually did back up my ESF data. The problem is that the method for restoring it does not work for an IMEI of 0. And yes I did try it anyway but what really fixed my problem was re provisioning the phone then using the method of IMEI restoring using QPST.

Welcome to the dark side of Samsung!
Nah really it's not all that bad. Things are just done a bit differently and if you haven't gotten your SDK setup and Odin 3.7 installed then I recommend you do so. It's like having the PH98IMG.zip file for the Rezound. Gets you back to stock in case sh** happens.

If you already had it setup for the Rezzy then you should be fine. Odin is needed if you ever want to return to stock..you know in case something goes wrong. You never know when you may need it.

There is no reason NOT to use Odin, it is simple to use, pretty much foolproof & you don't even need to install it.
All you do is DL the files to a folder in your PC & then click the .exe file.
You don't need the latest version either, I still had Odin from back when I was flashing a Droid Charge & that same version works perfectly for the G3.

[Q] Cheescake and build.prop

Sup Guys!
Quick question. Would what I have my phone set as under build.prop (ro.build.device etc.) change what updates I could get from cheesecake? Currently my phone is set as a Galaxy S II. I'm wondering this because whenever I check cheesecake every server is usually down....
Good question. I didn't think of that before. Mine is set to look like a infuse. Same problem here
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
I would highly recommend being on stock rooted (or stock deodexed ROM) to check on Cheesecake. Both of those do not mess with the build.prop file, so Motorola would still see your phone as if it were on the original firmware.

ive messed with the build.prop, and i do not believe its called by the update server.... seems to me its checking something else....maybe parts of the build.prop, but if it were only the build prop, you would not need an A2 to check for updates for an A2, you would just have to change your build.prop....
so i think the answer is ...... unfortunatly...... need to be on an att based rom to recieve an att based update.....
and most servers will be down 99% of the time, and only up for short snaps... y we all have to check constantly.....

Either way, I'm doing my fair share of checking.
It is not cheesecake that checks the build.prop, it is the andriod update checker that does it.
You MUST "appear" as stock to both the update check app that chesecake calls, and to the updater script when we really have an update. As said the fxz is the best start point, for a true real production OTA.

Did you make your edit in Linux with gedit? If so it does that.... If your phone is overwriting it, it is mostlikely and issue in your ROM. Check that you do not have anything in /system/etc/init.goldfish.rc or something similar, that could overwrite it, that or /system/etc/init.d
Those really are the only things that could do something like that... or cheesecake, but I highly doubt that.
This may be a stupid question, but has anyone flashed to or been on 2.3.5. with root and with [whatever] rom, installed Cheesecake, and tried getting updated to 2.3.6. through Cheesecake?

Yes, there were several people back in Nov. that found those leaks... No not now though.. All cheesecake does is it connects to all the MOTO pro,QA,DEV, and TEST, servers, to find updates that the devs put up their for internal QA/QC at each phase... that is why they are not up for very long.
That is why even if you were on 2.3.5 you would still find the 4.04 stuff... I know I saw a couple of ICS leaks last week (they were gone before I could get them downloaded fully) right after I fxz'd with 2.3.5... I am now back to 2.3.6 bone stock rooted, so that I can test something special I am attempting. Don't ask what just yet, but if you know anything about me, you know I have one real mission in here, and this is still working to that end, I have no clue yet if this will work though.

ICS back to 2.3.5 fxz fix zip file -- Files pulled --

Here is the zip file to apply to the 2.3.5 fxz, to make RSDlite flash the FXZ files properly, from the ICS leak. The steps are the same as they were for the 2.3.6 fix. Just unzip these files over top of the original fxz files.
+++++++++++++++++++++++NOTE++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I have pulled these files, so that no else attempts to flash the fxz and brick thier phone. DO NOT ASK FOR THE FILES, I will not give them out knowing what happens to those on ICS that try to fxz back to GB.

LOL... You forget I had to think of several ways to possibly break this before I posted it for the rest of the world, so if there were issues, I knew what to do... How do you think I was able to flash that whole process 4 times... I built this yesterday afternoon, before I even started the process of testing the OTA out. I HAD to make sure we could flash back, so we were not like the OG Atrix guys, who can't flash an SBF now.
Thank You Jim, you are awesome.

the first time it would not boot, because the lbl file and the mbm were not loaded, and it is critical in this move back.... they have done something to the BL, to make flashing a little harder. I did a hex dump and a decompile of the new mbm file and it has a spot in it that looks like a check for correct lbl file being loaded from the fastboot flash.
The issue with the recovery is because it flashes a new recovery, and that was on the second time I had to flash the fxz, due to a bad root...

I am thinking the secret is using a script and not RSDlite. That is how I always restore my phone is with my own scripts, that I was getting ready to release before all this started.

Depends on the root method. If this replaces the rom then yeah you will lose everything, but if you use this method:

then you will not have to change anything and it's pretty straight forward.

I had to do a factory reset on my phone yesterday to troubleshoot another issue, so I can't say 100% but the few changes I made earlier today (wallpaper, lock screen shortcuts, ringtones, installed Pandora) stayed in place. From the script, it just copies files over and then moves them to system partition during next couple boots. It does not wipe data / cache / dalvik like when you load a new ROM.
I don't know about the java tool here but the one Aquila mentioned ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342 ) works perfectly.
You won't lose settings or have to clear anything. Its really useful if you're on the VRALG1 firmwares and don't want to revert to LF2 from flashing a rooted ROM.
I downloaded to my pc, then hooked up my gs3 nothing? What an I suppose to do?
Never mind it worked

Should move this Thread to the development section. And let the Devs tell us if this is good or not, Pros and cons.
just noticed that Adam is a dev.but should move to development so it can be seen more!!
This tool works well without loss to data...of course no one but you is responsible if something goes wrong but from what I see it uses the debug method I have used it and obtained root fine

I'm going to go ahead and say it...
Adam posted this in the development thread where they are working on cracking the bootloader. If he wanted the masses to be using it or if it was ready for the masses to use he would have posted it outside of that thread.
I don't know if it was bc of this thread or not, but this got picked up by droid life and he had to take it down off the R&D thread.
Stuff like this shouldn't be reposted outside of that thread until it is ready and the dev who came up with it says it is ok to do so (or just posts it himself).

It may be safe, it may not be. I would go with there is a reason he hasn't released it to the public and you should use previously established methods for all this stuff.
Good point, wonder why he held back?

Just from reading what he wrote in his post he was not ready for everyone to be using it yet...that's paraphrased but that was the gist of it

Deleted the op, I was just asking but will just wait for the official release.

It's unlocked, now how do I get JB?

That's all I want to know. Can I flash a JB rom now, and if so, which do you recommend?
I'd rather make a new post than search for the answer too.

The unlock just happened. Be patient as the devs need time in the kitchen. Just be happy that devolopment is going to expand in our community like crazy

It's only a matter of time now until the "Original Android Development" forum really starts kicking. I can not express how excited I am about this.
Boy, the devs will go nuts with this phone now.
This is awesome...

I'm still confused on why we have two development sections. Care to explain?

Try invisibleK's CM10 nightly (Version 1920 & above) All that I can find that is not working is NFC & face unlock.

+1 on this. I have no idea as well.
The original development section are for roms made from google source(vanillaOS) original sh1t if u know what i mean.
the regular development forums are just manufacturer(samsungSTOCK) rom+kernel lightly themed and lightly modded.
VERIZON GALAXY S 3
invisibleK or dhacker's CM10. Both are awesome.

Its pointless anyway. Development is still development.. I can figure out if its original or not by the title. Never had this **** in old forums

These forums have become quite confusing. Im just waiting it out until the developers make it easy. All the talk of mms and data being wonky and super sleep or something working or not just has me scratching my head...
you could have had JB quite some time ago...was no need to wait for the bootloader to be unlocked...

^ This. Kexec gave us the same capabilities as an unlocked bootloader. The unlocked bootloader just makes things a little safer (still not 100% idiot proof) and could draw outside developers who may have been on the fence due to the bootloader being locked.
I just installed a non-kexec recovery and cm10 from the sticky over in the original development section and am quite happy with it. There were a few hiccups but after a few restarts it seems to have smoothed out.
Just make sure you back up your imei.
Goodluck!
so does this mean once bootloader is unlocked new roms won't have possibility for the lost IMEI issue?
this is the only thing keeping me now from unlocking bootloader

was worried about this too, but just back it up before doing anything very simple in terminal
Backup
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11 of=/sdcard/efs.sbn
If you need to restore
su
dd if=/sdcard/efs.sbn of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11
reboot
I used ez unlock worked perfect, backed up my IMEI, then used ez recovery to flash cwm, nandroided, wiped cache/dalvik/data, flashed CM10 +Gapps ... yesssss :good::good::good: another 535 freed from the shackles

Using your reply here and the guide here I now have CM10 up and running. Thank you! This is the first time I have used a non-stock rom (I came from a Moto Droid Pro, very unfriendly).
Though, the boot animation says Cyanogenmod 9? wat?
