Sry if this topic was covered already-but I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to use my Xbox on a free hotspot. I've read foxfi is great..but I also learned that downloading a power control widget with the hotspot toggle included that it provides the stock hotspot for free. It worked indeed..though unclear if this is using verizons paid hotspot...didn't warn of any charges or anything. My laptop connected to the stock hotspot though couldn't get internet(tho it's switching between 4g and 3g).

Well if they find out you will get charged but as of now no one is sure whether they can tell or not and no one has come forward saying they got charged. Its a risk you have to take by yourself because no one can give a definitive answer.
If you use the hotspot, you'll be charged for it...warning in advance.they can monitor it.

So if I use Xbox via firefi they still be able to tell? I've read in many other post where they consume an absurd amount of data through such tethering...hmm.
So if they see I'm using firefi, how much would they charge me? I have unlimited data. Thanks for info.

No one knows for sure if they can..but as long as you don't use an absurd amount of data I don't think they have a reason to.
You think with the technology now, they can't monitor our phones, if they wanted to, they can. but it's true you can teather with out a plan but I warn you, be careful, me .I have unlimited data and unlimited hotspot.did you know if you have unlimited data your eligible for the unlimited hotspot which is $30 bucks.(4g phone's only)

I paid for It once but got tired of paying for it and never using it. Then getting rid of it only to need it again. So I just started to go around Verizon it's a win win for me
Hm interesting. So the worst that could happen if Verizon notices I am using a free hotspot is charge me $30? That's not to bad for having unlimited data but mine as well go free first ey? They wouldn't try to teach me a lesson and charge a larger amount or take away my unlimited would they?

I tether to my xbox all the time using foxfi, it says about 13MB of data were used while using it for a fairly long time. It only needs to download vector positions of people and such for Call Of Duty I would think, so not too data intensive at all. I dunno about other games.
thanks for the feedback guys..Will connect my Xbox via foxfi later tonight. So stoked to play some cod after two long months without it lol just hope the data will keep up with the game. Cheers.

I could have sworn, just like vz nav, vzw only charges for the hotspot for the use of its app.
Use vz nav, spend 9.99 a month, or, use google nav for free.
Use vzw hotspot, 30.00 a month or, use foxfi for free.
I've never seen vzw advertise the accrued data usage as the fee for the hotspot- only the use of the app.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
On the Droid X running gb, there were three system files that had something to do with data service provider. It was determined that these apks could monitor tethering. They were easily removed. Not sure about today, but it used to be that when tethering, if you weren't redirected to vzw's Page showing pricing for tethering then you were okay. I did notice that the built in hotspot app now requires a subscription to even turn it on.

Hey guys,
Is anyone else having serious problems with data usage? Mine is getting used frivolously fast, and I don't have unlimited? Is there any way that I can upgrade to unlimited, or workaround data reports? I'm screwed if I can't fix this... Any tips would be great.
Thanks,

Please guys... its getting ridiculous. I turned off data network, used the number to check my data usage, and it went up. I tried it again later, and it went up again. Are they intentionally faking data usage to force me over the 2gb? Anyone else having problems like this at all?
Unfortunately there is no work around for data plan, my suggestion is use WiFi and turn off cell data network when you're not needing it. I have Verizon Unlimited 4G, but I have a grandfathered AT&T 4G plan as well and my data usage is approaching 20GB this month and I don't even tether!! I just watch a lot of movies and stream things like radio constantly. I don't have WiFi anywhere I go except home.

Today, I turned off sync, deactivated data network, and only used wifi. it went up by at least 120mb. Does the iphone 2g thing work or no?
Did you ever think that 120mb data you went up while not on data was just lagging behind in the logs on the system? I mean, i how real time is the data usage logs? Figure that out first

I don't have unlimited... I have the 2GB plan... and I guess I just don't use data at all... I mean I have WiFi turned on most of the day so I think it pops onto WiFi when I am at home or at work. I just tried *3282# and it said I had 364MB out of 2048MB used and I've had the phone for over two weeks now lol... you think it's server lagged?
I sync my gmail accounts, use facebook (a lot) and I stream Pandora everywhere I go... so I don't know...
get my data manager to see which program is using so much data and then either uninstall it or get droidwall and block it.
droidwall lets you set a list of apps that can access data only over wifi.
both are free in the market
Im an at&t rep and yes the iphone 2g works...if your in miami i can help.

It's odd that youve got so much phantom data use. I have an unlimited plan and probably use 10-20gb a month because I stream radio and video all day at work. Our other phone has a 2gb plan and I think she has used maybe 200mb of the 2gb in 2 weeks just checking emails/facebook/etc.
Switch to Sprint the true no caps unlimited data. Other than that there is no more tricks to get unlimited.

Now with Audiogalaxy, Amazon Cloud Player and Google Music I imagine data consumption will jump up. I'm consistently over 2Gb for the last two months.
Right now I don't have any music on my phone, I stream it all.

That's not true, I work for AT&T and there is no such app. As far as getting unlimited, if you been a customer for a while and call retentions and tell them you will cancel to go to another carrier, they will transfer you and try to get unlimited data. I've called many times for customers and have a 60% success rate, if one says no, call back, someone will appreciate your business and ask for supervisor to please add unlimited data for you.
I heard that if you are running a custom ROM, that if you go into the ROM files and go to systems, app, and find device manager and remove the device manager app, the carrier can't see how much data or how it's being used on your phone. Does anyone know anything about whether or not this is real? If it were that simple I would think some of you Senior Member guys would have figured that out. Hopefully someone knows if it is B.S. or not. Thanks as always.

its easy to get them not to see if you are tethering, just delete tethermanager from /system/app. as for data usage, they provide your data, they can see how much you use whether or not you want to. download the myatt app if you want to monitor to see what they have you down for used data. if you are on an unlimited plan you dont really have to worry about this, only if you want to know when youll be throttled, but thats easy to get around.

Well, if you have a support ROM (I know CM7 supports it, stock doesn't however.) Go to Settings->Wireless and networks->Mobile Networks and look for a section called network mode I think, and you should have the options of WCDMA, GSM, and WCDMA/GSM. You want to click WCDMA. also, you could try setting your APN as wap.cingular and seeing if that works to get rid of throttling. Hope this helps!

wait your complaining about a 2 gig cap but you signed the contract ?
I've gotten the AT&T dreaded text/email twice in total. The first time I was definitely tethering. The second I hadn't tethered since the first time (over a month), so I gave them an earfull about it. I'm still on unlimited and I'm still tethering...
What I do to [hopefully] avoid the hammer coming down is a little more involved than most, but it seems to have worked thus far.
I've created a VPN to my home network (using OpenVPN). I have configured the phone to send all internet traffic over the VPN when connected. Using compression, it's actually pretty quick. I don't really notice any difference in speed, and every packet leaving my device and destined for the internet is encrypted. Let 'em try to sniff that!
This is a little further than most are willing to go, and arguably more than is necessary, but I really like my unlimited data. I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure I get to keep it (short of not stopping my tethering practices - I mean, let's not be stupid!)

That's stupid. How are they going to have our tethering cut into our data consumption, and have us have to activate and pay for it?
Not sure how they think they blocked it, because I'm still using it and it works just fine...lol

That's an odd one, but it sounds like it thinks you're using a tmobile hotspot. You can make the phone broadcast wifi with out an extra app. I would recommend you do that instead. Extra tethering apps are usually for carriers who force people to pay more for tethering.
Edit: I missed the word "to" there. But same idea. And this is a semi-off topic question, but why would you tether TO your kindle?

I'm using the app (Wireless Tether) because wifi tethering is not working on AOKP and I need it because my internet is off so I don't have wifi at home to get internet on the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire is Wifi only. I also need wifi at work.

Got it. Thanks for clearing it up. Just keep an eye on your bill, carriers *love* to secretly bill you for stuff because they think you're doing something you're not.
Keep us informed. I tether my Galaxy Tab Plus all day, every day that I am at work. I use the native CM7 over bluetooth tethering app. Works great and I would really be unhappy if I were to not be able to use this function.
I'll let you know if anything happens in my bill. I hope not. If so, then works about to get real boring..lol
Well, I'm an idiot! I went to tether again today and pulled up the browser and it went to a page saying tethering was blocked. I then remembered I had Dolphin Browser HD user agent set to "Ipad"." I changed it back to "Android" and its all good now. I feel stupid now...lol

does that mean that those of us that tether need to worry about it getting shut off, it looks like they think it is shut off but its not, right? so as long as we are running a custom rom we will be OK?
You should be careful, they can add the tethering plan without your permission, just for using that function alot, amlnd that is an extra charge on your phone bill.

It's not actually unlimited.
I used to be on GG myself and everything was going great. Then I started getting my internet cut off because I was using too much internet. How can one use too much of unlimited? I literally ended up getting cut of twice in one week for using too much and all I was doing was streaming through Netflix.

Look at OP. He just asked about our carrier and hasn't posted since. He never wanted to discuss about our carriers either, he simply wanted to know WHAT carrier we were on. The replies started the conversation on what carriers were good.
Since I posted second, all I knew about this thread was that some weirdo with barely any posts just wanted to know what carrier other people were using. He never posted his carrier either, usually you would at least say "to start, I am on AT&T" or other carrier.

There is no "best" deal, but a popular one I know of and use is with T-Mobile, a non-contract $30 a month plan with unlimited data(first 5gb at 4g speed) unlimited texting and 100 talking minutes. I rooted my phone and can now tether without the fee and I use an app to make free phone calls. 5gb of data is a lot for phone usage, even if you tether it should last you a month. If you're looking for a home internet service though you should still order wifi because 4g speed isn't great on laptops.
i have sprint.. been with them almost 4 years.. i love them.. well service sucked for a while but now i get great 4g lte in my state so im happy.. i get unlimited talk.. text.. data.. and use wifi tether all the time with no issues.. i would hate to have a limit on data..

I'm with T-mob and pay much more than you for pretty much the same thing. What apps are you using?
