IRepairFast Review / Problems / Warning - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I had this phone for a week keeping it sparkling clean besides the broken glass.
I hit the glass accidentally bumping it off the side of MacBook. Go figure. Yeah I know Gorrila Glass 2 is crap.
Based professionally looking video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5TRf0REyMM
I chose IRepairFast.com to fix my broken glass. I paid $200+.
I am attaching pictures.
Also what you cant see on the pictures. The new screen is definitely not this same quality unless it was not installed properly.
Lastly, there is additional bleed on the buttons.
In retrospective, I should have done it myself or just not to bother fix it. Definitely would not recommend it.

That looks like crap. Did it come back with all the grease and scuffs on it also, or was that you?
Yikes.

I sent it sparkling new. No grease and no scuffs.

Wow, they beat the crap out of that thing! It looks worse than the time I took apart an iPod Nano, and I quickly decided I suck at taking things like this apart, and don't do it anymore!
Apparently, "I Repair Fast" is not synonymous with "I Repair Well".
On another note, I know that some folks have had light bleed (from the capacitive buttons) on brand new HOX's, so that part may not be their fault, but just the display itself.

Ouch . The for the warning. Looks like a case is in order to hide that. Or Mr clean magic eraser lol

Ouch! Did you contact them to complain? I take it you paid with a credit card, can you dispute the charges?

I must say the tech in the video does work professionally...if its the same tech he probably had a bad day

I sent them this thread plus extra pictures. Disputing the charge is not an issue to get back the cost of the repair. The bigger damages are that they made $350 phone ($550 bought on amazon - $200 screen replacement cost) worth now $150. So it is additional negative $200 swing.

Hello, this is John from iRepairFast,
The HTC ONE X is a very hard repair. This is due to the thin form factor of the phone pushing the internal components to be extremely compact. In order to accomplish the thin design, it uses an integrated screen, which is the glass, digitizer, and LCD molded together from the factory. These are not possible to separate. When replacing the glass or LCD you have to replace both at the same time. The main problem is the parts that are used for these repairs have the glass and LCD joined by a very thin piece of adhesive. While the parts ARE OEM replacement parts, they aren’t joined together in the same fashion, as when they are assembled in the factory. Due to the glass and LCD being separated by a thin soft piece of adhesive you can get a large amount of screen flex (The glass pressing against the LCD). In order to compensate for the screen flex a liquid adhesive is applied to the outer glass and mid-frame and then wiped off. This eliminates the screen flex problem.
Most likely the issue is that the adhesive didn’t cure correctly and slightly leaked out of the mid-frame during shipping.
We hope that you will contact us about your issue; we apologize for the inconvenience and would like to correct it and reimburse your payment.

That's what I'm talking about ^^^^^^^

wow dude, thats a big wtf. They left glue everywhere. they ruined that phone for sure!

Thanks for posting this thread!

Look in the bright side... At least you didn't pay $300.
But seriously, it is a hard repair. Just look at a disassembly on YouTube, its freaking ridiculous, especially if you've repaired other phones, such as myself. The Samsung Vibrant, 3rd gen iPod Touch, and HTC Mytouch 4G are a breeze compared to this.
I do agree on the screen adhesive however, I bought some 1mm double sided tape to put the screen and phone back together, and it still creaked a little.
Good thing he offered to replace it, I'd be super pissed.

You can smash it into a thousand million pieces with a hammer and still do an insurance claim. Warranty is another story.

The fact that iRepair took the time out to reply via forum and issue a refund..... and attempt to correct their mistake. Says that they're a reputable company.
Well done iRepair, well done.

Gelacase - There response to $19.99 Shipping

Hey,
So i saw someones post this morning about the Gelaskins. Well i had a look into it (they look great btw) i went all the way to the checkout and found out the shipping to the UK was $19.99 (£13.75), i was like :O :O :O on top of the $14.99 (£10.30) thats £24. There shipping is supposed to be $6 to the UK. (screen shots below)

So i decided to email them about the problem this is there response:
'Hi Hugh,
Thank you for your email! The larger items can only be sent via UPS. May I ask which items you are trying to purchase?'
I replied saying
'I'm just trying to buy the HTC desire skin. Don't think that's too big.'
Gelaskin reply
Hi Hugh,
It's a little larger than the other phones. Just large enough not to fit the "standard post" requirements outlined by Canada Post unfortunately. If you wait a few weeks, this is going going to be adjusted. We are almost at a resolution!
So maybe there just trying to make us pay for the new release, but i think that price is slightly extortionate. What do you think?
Yesterday it showed me $5,95 for the shipping to Slovakia, today it says $19,95. Wtf ?
BS, no way is this that much bigger than other devices. Besides $20 is too much even for a laptop skin...
I just checked the Nexus One and that one they can ship for $6. The Nexus One is the same size as the Desire. How is it possible they can ship the Nexus One but not the Desire. BS.

I have already sent them a message pointing that out, I will let you know what their answer is.
Wish http://www.decalgirl.com/ did them, there prices are significantly cheaper. Ive also been on to them and they say the phone's on their 'list'. Maybe if more people requested it, it would appear ^^
I thought the expensive shipping costs would apply only to laptop skins, it is ridiculous price for a mobile phone skin.

I was gonna get one of these, but I think, at that price, they can go stick their heads up a pig.
Rip off merchants.
Is there not any 3rd party sellers for these? Should be cheaper shipping i guess, who nows.
This is the reply I received from GelacSkins today:
Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your email! The Desire is actually slightly larger then the Nexus 1. It requires a larger package, and unfortunately exceeds the dimension requirements for Canada Post. It therefore must go with UPS, my apologies! We are hoping to have this issue rectified within the next few weeks. I hope that helps! Thank you again, Stephen. Have a great day!
Warmest regards,

yeah it seems like it would cover the sensor, the pictures on their website are digitally eidted so its not really clear,,,,,,,,,,,,and yeah the shipping cost is a complete rip off, and the Desire is no where in hell bigger than nexus one!
does anyone know for sure if the skin covers the proximity sensor ?
actually, where is the sensor on the phone ?
The sensor along with the display brightness adjustment sensor is in the top left corner of the screen, just left to the HTC logo. No idea if they really cover the sensors, I'd wager it'd need someone to go forward and try it. And it won't be me as long as S&H resembles a scam scheme!
is it possible to take out the back without removing the skin? if not, it would be ridiculous to install this!
Like a mug I ordered a couple of these, I'm really disappointed. Yes it covers the sensors, yes it stops you being able to remove the back cover, my main disappointment is that it doesn't cover the top or bottom corners of the phone and they are much thinner than I expected. I thought with a name like gelaskins it would be slightly padded, its not. It's just printed vinyl. Waste of money

hmmm the beauty of the skins are something for me to look over their inefficiencies (not really protecting the sides) but definitely not their impracticality (not being able to remove the back cover and covering the sensors)...although I had my eye on one of the designs for a long time, they are a no no to me!

i've ordered one too and was horrified by your post. i popped an email off to gelaskins regarding the inability to remove the battery cover and got the following reply :
"Thank you for your email! Yes, this is correct. We are in the midst of rectifying this. My apologies! We will definitely ship you out a fresh one once this change has been made. In the mean time, feel free to use and abuse the one you've got! "
I'd buy only a cover for the back cover if it was available and didn't cost too much.... but not if it means you can't take the back cover off, whats the point of that?!?!
JAmes.

i'm switching out my shattered Captivate under insurance for an Inspire as of now (get my inspire tomorrow and could not be more excited haha)
but anyway, this led me to look up a little about the prices/difficulty of screen replacement on the inspire vs captivate. Captivate was possible to replace, but being an OLED screen, it was very expensive (something like 130 bucks or so). Inspire replacement screen is only 60 bucks, but wow, i looked at the teardown video and it is downright INSANE. HTC made it as close to impossible to replace a screen as they could.

While having an easily replaceable screen may seem like a huge consumer benefit, I highly doubt the percentage of people that are actually willing and capable to perform a screen replacement are taken into account. I'm sure it is low on the manufacturers list as far as design criteria.

very true....but you also think they would do it to benefit themselves. Think about it, what do you think is the number one service request they get? I'd be willing to bet most of them are cracked screens. I can understand it not being a high on the list of priorities, but if you have watched the DHD teardown video, you would know what i mean lol

yeah but their technicians know how to do it and probably do it frequently. They can probably do it a hell of a lot faster than you can because they do it all the time. Now if you do it, you're probably going to have to make sure you're doing every step correctly to make sure you're doing it correctly.
Also, that sucks...I had a gel case on mine, and it was kind of thin, and I was playing doodle jump while I was walking (stupid) and my friend slammed the door on me (as a joke) and I dropped my phone flat on its back, and since the camera sticks out a bit, the round part around the camera got scratched (not the lens, thankfully)
I might replace it eventually because I saw that you can buy the back part for like $35...so if the back gets any more beat up, I'll replace it. I like my phone looking awesome

right....
what I'm saying is that since they do it more often, they understand what they need to do and probably don't have trouble with it. It's their specialty, so once they learn how to do it, it's probably quick and easy for them. Making it easier for the consumer probably won't make much of a difference for the technicians.
i know what you meant....it just didn't really apply to what i'm talking about at all. Just because they know how to do it, doesn't make it any easier. It is still a long and very tedious process no matter who you are.
Take an iphone 3g for example. 2 phillips screws and a spudger to remove 3 ribbon cables and you are done. Which do you think a technician would rather do??? Something very long and drawn out, sometimes involving a heat gun to loosen the adhesive holding the screen in the chassis (hence, the EVO) or a couple screws and total time taking less than 5 minutes (even for someone like myself).

I had a white amzer silicone case on it but the fact that it belly flopped on pavement proved to be too much. Just ordered an otterbox for my new inspire. Not taking anymore chances.

[Q] Has anyone replaced a digitizer for g2x??

Any tips would be appreciated.
Maybe links to somewhere i can get the parts for cheap or a repair service.. thanks
You can get a cheap digitizer at Amazon.com, and there are a few videos on YouTube that'll teach how to replace it.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I got mine from RepairsUniverse.com. It was 67$ with shipping. Order their double sided tape, too. When you get it, disassemble according to their YouTube video. To remove the glass, use a hair dryer to heat the glass, and nudge it out with the plastic tool they provide. If you go slow and don't rush it, the whole process will take about an hour the first time. Clean the frame well, and place the tape on it. You'll have to cut the piece provided, so don't worry if it doesn't line up exactly. Press the glass down on the tape and reassemble the phone. BOOM.
Also: if you want to do something REALLY cool, search for the white digitizer and battery cover. The all white G2X looks awesome, and you can get the whole kit for like 80 bucks USD.
I never needed to use a hair dryer. It's fairly weak adhesive that keeps the screen on to the glass.
Look up the YouTube video. I actual commented on there about my experience replacing it. Same user name but with an x at the end (buru898x).
Oh and you also don't need to "re-tape" the screen either. The screen is locked in securely with or without glue/tape.
Actually I'm going to replace my aunts g2x this Saturday when she comes over. I got the digitizer plus the alluminim bezel (idk if it is aluminium or not) for 60 and I got it 3 days. I use Amazon

This auction had the housing as well so all I did was replace it completely. Simple.
Good Luck!

No!! First drop, first scratch. [Pic] Teach me how to live with it?

Guys, I have a problem.
I'm always really particular about my tech gear. I have enormous problems dealing with scratches and blemishes.
Yesterday, I was sitting on my dorm's couch watching Mad Men with some friends when I accidentally knocked my phone off the armrest to the tile floor. I do have a case on it, but it landed face-down. I picked it up and it later examined it. (I had already ordered a screen protector; it just hadn't arrived yet.)
I wiped it off with a microfiber cloth and found the tiniest nick in the display. You can't even see it when the screen is on unless you're looking for it and the color that's being displayed under it is just right. It's truly minuscule. Here's a photo of the damage:

(Note that the circled area is the only area that suffered any damage. Everything else is just dust/debris.)
But I can't get over the pressing need to return it. I know I'm being stupid. Can somebody please talk some sense (pun?) into me? This is my favorite phone that I've ever owned, and I want to learn to live with imperfections. I do realize that a screen protector will most likely mask this; it's just the fact that I know that it's there. Any advice? (Also, is it possible to remove a nick this small? I've tried glass cleaner, but that, predictably, didn't work.)
Um, its just a phone?
Scratches suck on phones like they do on cars, but eventually you just gotta get over it and live with the wear and tear.
Ya know, once you apply the screen protector it might be harder to notice there's a mark on the screen--like a thick screen protector (wet application like Zagg or Armorsuit). Those change shape into whatever they're on and fill in cracks. Who knows.
Safelite will come to you.
Seriously though, once you get over it you wont notice it anymore. It is unfortunate but really its gonna happen eventually.
And I doubt anyone is going to return/exchange it for you since its damaged now.
apply a screen protector.... it will make it less notify.
and you will eventually get over it...however it sucks if you planning to sell it after...
that's like 50 $ off...
might as well go try to exchange it - you have nothing to lose. worst they will say is "no" - and you could even try multiple AT&T stores. they might not inspect it or notice it, or you may get a sales rep that just doesn't care.
make up some sort of issue, or say you want to exchange grey for white... it's worth a shot, if you're going to obsess about it!
According to this you need an "aluminum silicate based polishing compound" to fill in the scratches. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449275
Anyone know the case of the HOX from the picture?
Thats why you need a screen protector, gorilla glass or not it will scratch.

Interesting. I would be afraid of making it more noticeable, though. Thanks for the link.

When I picked mine up at AT&T the only ones they had were the matte finish ones, but I grabbed one just for the hell of it to be safe. I replaced it with a zagg hd.Don't worry once you put it on it will hide it pretty good!
id take it into the store and tell them you are having random reboot issues, or something thats hard to verify. They should exchange it without much of an issue.

I actually ran over my vivid on Christmas eve..it had a zagg on it and leather inlay tpu case..a piece of gravel dug through screen protector and did exactly the same thing in almost same spot as Ur one x..I put a bodyguards( wet apply) on there after I cleaned it real good and once protector was on u could not even see it not even if u were looking for it don't know if same would happen in Ur case but I am the same as u...I did return my first vivid due to a micro scratch first day but told em it was a headphone issue lol so the fact that the protector made it go away made it easier for me to keep...hope this helps

To be honest, all the unethical and shadiness these companies perform on their customers, i have no problem with him doing this. I hope he drops his phone on purpose and returns it 10x over.
Yea, I wouldn't say cheat a person directly, but a company??? Hells yes because they cheat you left and right. Moreover, they're insured. Most people (small business, individuals, etc.) aren't protected in the same way and usually also don't want to rip you off...But do you have any idea what happens if you return a phone? LOL. It has zero effect on them.
Do you know how much waste there is with cell phones? It's redonkulous. To be quite frank, they could be giving us the phones for free.
A lot of the review models they hand out, they don't ask for back (depending on the carrier) and there's piles and piles of the stuff. Some of these review devices are never switched off either. Yes, there's literally 4G LTE modems hanging around fully active looong after they were used for some review article. They just hand stuff out like candy. T-Mobile asks for stuff back, but most other carriers don't.
It's seriously a drop in the bucket. They don't make their money off phones, they make it off plans and early termination fees.
I mean yea I would normally say it's SUPER unethical to return something damaged...But the older I get the more cynical I get I guess. The more I realize that these companies take advantage of us left and right.
Still. I wouldn't actually return it myself to be honest. Not worth the hassle and despite the fact that I know it doesn't hurt them and that I know they take advantage of me...I guess I still like to feel like a more honest person than the company. I dunno.
Anyway, speaking of scratches, does that liquid armor stuff really work?
...or claim insurance. It's what you're paying that for

first to break one!

so heres the story. it was on my kitchen table. my cat jumped up on the kitten table. the phone fell OFF the kitchen table. it landed on my wood flooring, and BAYYM. shattered like a christmas orniment. i can say the screen is fragile.. very different from my Galaxy S phones, which have been dropped numerous times, landed on concrete, and have dropped inside of a machine at work (lol). guess this is why samsung desides to make those "cheap feeling" light weight builds..
sigh. already ordered a replacement screen here

It also depends on where the phone fell, screen first w.e , and and the energy when it hit the ground. The must have been hard.

Ouch.
Yeah man that sucks. I dropped my Vivid the exact same way except it was outside on concrete. I am assuming you didn't have a screen protector on? Some screen protectors are said to spread the impact and protect it better.
Is it easy to install the replacement screen?
Also $45 isn't bad at all. My wife recently did the same thing to her Samsung Infuse and it cost $150.

I really wouldn't say "fragile" as much as I would say it just happened to land in a manner that would cause it to break.

thats real cheap for a new screen
Correction, you are the SECOND person to break one. I beat you to it when I had it in my pocket when I went to the pool Sunday. It didn't enjoy swimming as much as I did.
bad kitty....
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the LCD and the glass are fused together...

I believe the cover glass and LCD are laminated together, so you won't be able to separate them...

You weren't the first to break one...HTC was the first to break it when they released it.
This is relevant to my future interests. Did you successfully replace the screen? Is it true that the screen is laminated/glued to the LCD? How did you pry it apart? Can you post instructions on how you did it after the deed is complete?
Keep us in the loop!
Mine fell off fbe olyptical this morning. Bounced ariund. Cracked the blue HTC plastic case. Nothing physical to the phone at all. A faint rattle inside the phone that may have been there before. You can only here faintly when shaking.

If the rattle is around the camera area, don't worry about it, there's somewhere in a thread in here talking about it and if I remember correctly it has to do with the camera and is present in all of the devices.

Does it sound like its near the camera lens? Mine does it and its never been dropped.
It does appear to be by the camera. That makes me feel better!
Either way I still decided to add the best buy protection plan in case it were to happen again.
