Go into CWM and under backups and restore, backup your current ROM from there.
Everything from text messages to every app you've downloaded will be backed up.
If you end up not liking the new ROM, go to CWM and choose backup and restore and restore from there.

What are the chances I can recover my contacts?

I rooted my captivate, backed up everything (I thought) I was supposed to, and then downloaded and flashed over to Cognition. It all worked pretty flawlessly, I customized everything the way i wanted on my home screens and restored all my apps... and then I realized all my phone numbers were gone.
I've tried every strategy I can find for recovering them except flashing back to my backup, which I remember reading might work. I'm not sure that will work either, and I don't want to go through the hassle of undoing all my work if it's unlikely to save all my contact info anyhow.
So I guess I'm hoping for some kind of miracle here... is there any way to recover these that I may not have tried? I thought titanium backup would preserve them, or at the very least I thought syncing my google account would but neither seems to have worked - i've scoured the backup files I made but can't see which of them might contain that information, if any.
Sorry for the lengthy post - just want to cover all my bases to save time for responders. I apologize for asking an all-too-often asked question also, but nothing I've searched and tried seems to work for me.
Any help out there? Thanks.
If you still have the stock contacts app and you synced with AT&T before, try and resync it. As a general rule, I always export my contacts to my sd before doing anything.

hey thanks for the response. i did not sync with AT&T, only google. But that didn't actually work I found out too late.
If I have to re-build my entire contact list then so be it, but if there's anyway you think flashing back to my old setup might restore them (or i could extract that data and import it into my current setup) - I'd much rather do that.
I just don't wanna flash if it's not likely to work.
What app did you back up your system with?

Always, always, always, copy all your contacts to your SIM before you do anything like this to your phone. You might lose the formatting, but you will always have them.

Well, I used clockwork recovery after rooting. then i installed titanium backup and thought i made a backup of everything on my phone - but when i restored them after flashing cognition, the contacts didn't come along.
I am not sure if that's where my mistake was or not. I thought I had them backed up with my google account if nothing else, but that didn't take either. (I just got the phone about a week ago, hadn't messed around with much on it before i started playing right away)
But regardless, do you think there's anyway I might be able to recover them?

there is a slim chance that if you flash back to stock 2.1 and restore your titanium backup that your contacts would be there, my theory is that the differences in 2.1 contacts storage and 2.2 contacts are in a place that tb wont restore them to there correct places. someone please correct me if im wrong...

Thanks, I learned my lesson now. I thought I was following the procedures given all the reading I had done before starting, but I guess I overlooked this part or it wasn't specifically harped on enough. If only I had known I could be so happy right now with this phone.

If it makes a difference in your thought process, I actually installed the eclair version of cognition. The top selection on the right hand side of the ponack.net page
Although maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying.... as I said, I just got my first android phone a week ago, I've done a lot of reading the last week and could very easily be confused here on something simple.
if you flashed the eclair version then that voids my theory.

[Q] Restoring: Rom Manager vs. Clockworkmod Recovery

I just recently purchased rom manager premium and havent been backing up and restoring as often as I am now as I'm trying CM7 Nightlies almost daily. I havent had to restore until today as I didnt like the dl/ul speed I was getting with the latest cm7. The last backup I did as my latest ones has been when I updated cm7 and rom manager asked if I wanted to make a backup before installing the latest cm7 and I would choose yes. When I restored today I noticed it didnt remember all my settings, some apps were missing, I had to sign in to my google account again, and I had to restore some system settings/contacts/bookmarks etc etc..I almost doubted I had restored to my previous backup but the build.prop still had the changes I had made and my dl/ul speed was good.
I guess my question is, should I be making my backups directly with clockworkmod to avoid this. The reason I ask is when I've used clockworkmod to make backups and restore in the past it would put back the rom with all my apps/settings exactly the way I left without me having to set everything back up again. Not sure what I'm missing, or has something changed with backups using either of these tools? Maybe I'm just doing it wrong?
nandroid backups aren't always perfect. I've run into issues from backing up both ways. for instance one time I restored a backup and my statusbar was completely missing. It may be placebo effect but I personally have run into less issues backing up and restoring from cwm. just my .02 cents
Dude what gives!? I'm baffled - I swore I posted on this thread - twice!? I'm Losing It Guys...
What I thought I wrote was I had noticed that too and went to test it out. It got me curious. Well what I realized when I went to ROM manager to make a backup was that though we name it from there, all the magic happens in recovery. I am gonna go out on a limb and say that it wouldn't matter which you use, as they are the same. ROM Manager essentially boots into recovery. And I'm not positive but doesn't it restart into recovery? And rebooting into recovery powers you off, then into recovery - where you have to work over to it, but all in all - It's actually only recovery that creates the backup. The one difference is I notice every now and then Thru Rom manager my phone just reboots. So when I put it down and let it do its thing, I've learned to be sure the backup was created.
I came back to see.if there was any more insight into this.... And my posts were gone? Am I trippin????
Edit: yeah I checked the time of OP and I'm positive I did. Even came back and the second post I talked about the recovery doing all the work..... Wild ....

Edit: My phone has literally been buggin. wondering if its Rom related, or if I might need to unroot. And start over. Heard it helps. Ok - back to Rom manager
yeah dyliho is right either way u look at it recovery is backing it up. my train of thought it why not go straight to recovery and avoid the middleman (rom manager) and u would think there would be less problems. like I said could be pure coincedince but I have run into less issues just doing it from recovery

Sudden issues with my phone

I've had this phone since the day it released and generally had no problems with it. But a couple months ago, I started having issues with the home screen loading the icons up every time I went to home. Random reboots for no reason, too. I read that it seemed to be a common issues for the phone, so I thought I'd wait for Gingerbread. But today the phone wasn't begin responsive when I tried to text, so I tried rebooting and now it's stuck on the endless reboot. It seems the only way to stop this is to get it to factory reset itself, but I'm hoping I don't have to do that because the phone did a factory reset by itself a month ago and I don't want to deal with starting over again. Is there another trick to it?
Maybe I'm better off getting it replaced. Are the newer models free of all these glitches or is it all still more or less a crapshoot with the problems I've had, screen bleeding, ect?
Just so it's out there, I rooted my phone with SuperOneClick, but I didn't flash or install any roms.
yea i would sumtimes u just get a bad phone when u flash it!! but i'd try another rom and see what that does!!!
But I never flashed it to begin with. It this happened 6 moths after already having the phone.
But if I can fix it by flashing it, maybe I'll try that. I've been wanting to try that cyanogenmod since it's lookign better than my stock froyo.
Yea I would flash it b4 tryin a new1...n if that doesn't wrk then u no what to do

If I flash it, is my phone going to reset itself anyway? Totally new to this.
yup thats y i always flash lol
If you have Clockworkmod Recovery try to just clear the Dalvik Cache. Reboot loops are usually Dalvik Cache issues. The first boot after clearing the cache can take around 5 minutes so be patient.
I went ahead and factory reset it, since I have never flashed it or have any of those apps. If I decide to look into installing Cyanogenmon on my phone, where should I start reading to get all the information to learn how to do it? I've rooted my phone, but that's it. I've stuck to pretty much what was on the phone.

If you rooted it, that means you installed Clockworkmod Recovery. To install CM7 you download the zip package, go into recovery, do a factory reset and wipe the dalvik cache, format the system and flash the zip you got from CM.
I rooted it in Superoneclick though, I don't know if I have Clockworkmod recorvery, unless it's not supposed to show up in the app tray like Superuser does.
Isn't there a way to backup my current state on my phone so I keep all my settings in place? I'll probably get into this tomorrow after work.

Have you loaded a lot of apps that autorun when you turn on the phone? Many do and you could be unaware of that. If too many apps are running, or a badly programmed app is running, it can cause issues such as this with your phone.
Also, it sounds like you are still on Froyo with the old baseband. You might want to consider factory resetting it again and running the LG Updater to get GB and the new baseband. Then use the One Click Flasher to install Clockwordmod so you can do backups (basically snapshots of the current state of your device) and then you can play around with alternate roms.
if that doesn't fix it then your device is defective. If you have a warranty you might just want to get a swap going on it.
Yeah, I'm still stuck on Froyo. Is the LG Updater working now? Last I read, it was bricking phones. If it works now, I'm guessing my plan should be:
Factory reset
Use LG Updater
Use One Click Flasher to Install Clockworkmod
Install a rom (Cyanogenmod)
Alot of this terminology is totally new to me, so I'm totally lost reading these tutorials that seem to rely on knowing what these terms mean.
Anyway, would be nice to get rid of all these errors. I can't even install anything from the marketplace anymore, I get a force close.
Alright, tooling around on Cyanogenmod 7 now. I don't like that it doesn't have the LG camera or Swype, so I switched to Weapon G2X. Liking it. Any other recommendations?
Weapon G2x is awesome i keep coming back to it my self.... but for the record i've only owned my phone for about a month and i havn't had any problems at all with i love actually .. i just can't find a kernel that doesn't mess things up back on subject i pretty sure GB took care of most of the problems people were having with the phone i don't know if they did any hardware updates to the newer models
Yeah, it's great. The only issue I have is that Swype doesn't give me a list of alternatives when I double tap a word, so I need to re-Swype the word "if" when it was supposed to be the word "of".
Last question, Can I make multiple backups with Flashworkmod? Now that I've fully set up all my phone, apps and fully configured all my settings, I wanted to back it up to this point so my personalized settings are still accessible. Or is it only one backup?

Do you mean Clockworkmod Recovery? The backups are coded by date and time so you can make as many as you want. Consider each one a snapshot of the exact state of the device at the time you made the backup. It will be restored exactly the same.

[Q] tried to re-root my sensation 4g

i have the sensation 4g and i was running the gingerbread ROM with beats audio for a month and it was going perfect, i loved it, but i wanted the ice cream sandwhich ROM and i tried to install it but i messed my phone up completely, it would loud to the beats audio screen and freeze, i left it there for about an hour and it still nothing, i wiped everything on my phone but now it says that my bootloader is locked? idk what that means, all the phone does now is freeze at the beats audio screen, its been a couple days and im going crazy, is this fixable? or should i buy a new device?
can someone please help me?
i'd ask this question in the sensation q&a forum.... might get a more targeted response.
Did you install the new firmware from this thread? It is required for ICS based roms. You also need superCID if you haven't got it already.
Look for more info in the Sensation forums.
thank you for the replies, i will take this thread to the sensation Q&A's. Yes everything i downloaded was from xda developes, i got the firmware, i think i did the super CID but im not sure if i did it right, im new to the whole root thing, like i said i rooted it a month ago with the ginigerbread that i got from here and it was flawless, i just made a mistake trying to install the ICS and i dont know what to do at this point.
Looks like your Headed in the right direction, GOOD LUCK!
Advice if you are not really understanding rooting i would suggest reading up on it, and double check the directions as you go along even if you have to copy the guy put it in a note pad and strike out anything you did after you completed it will get you comfortable and you'll do it smoother! If you get into your boot loader and it wont scroll down or up hit your designated select key it will do something and but you back to the main menu, mine locks up sometimes and i do that and i am free to roam around, also a another quick tip take your SD out of your phone and put it in a card reader there REALLY CHEAP, it should mount then you can go in there and delete the old software and put a fresh new copy in there and then put it back into your phone. do a factory reset, then wipe cache and re install. just future tips!

I agree with ride this bike. Unfortanetly I can give you my opinion but you looking and trying out some for yourself will be the best solution. Everyone has there own wants and feels like I want ics cuz I love always having the newest stuff, and even the original devs that made it have bugs cuz its new. Which means even more bugs for the aftermarket devs. So for now there probably isn't a stable version that I have seen. But this thread is where I started from just a short skim of there work they have made alot of progress and are keeping everyone updated to the latest news which is what I like. The place I started is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380478 please note you will possibly have random resets and a bunch of functions not working. Please for the love of God before you go and start your trial an error read the entire post a few times then get the software and do a nand back up. Just invade you don't like it you can go back tovwhere you left off. And also if u have a problem search that thread first to see if others are having it and might have fixed it.

Is my Samsung Infuse DEAD?

Hey, guys. Hoping some of you experts can help me diagnose what's wrong with my Samsung Infuse. I bought it off Craigslist at the end of May, and the guy had the phone with the original screen protector on it, with the original case and all accessories, so I had no reason to believe it had any problems. He told me the phone was already rooted & unlocked, which I wanted since I signed up with Straight Talk. I used it for June & July and had a host of problems, so I put on the CM10 ROM last week to see if it helped. It didn't. Here are the problems I continuously encounter:
1. When going to unlock my phone with a pattern, once in awhile it won't detect my finger-presses. Sometimes nothing shows up at all, sometimes one of the dots will highlight as I pass over it, but it won't draw. Eventually the screen turns off, and I turn it on and try it again. Usually it ends up working.
2. The battery dies much quicker than I expect it should. I tried running JuiceDefender and not running JuiceDefender, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Even without using my phone much for anything, even with the screen off, the battery will run out before the day is out. It's like if you were driving and had a hole in your tire... seems like some sort of a leak.
3. The cell radio seems flaky. Sometimes I won't get texts on time. A lot of the time I can't access any data, which is very important as I use Google Voice for lots of my texting, so I send a text and it won't go out. Loading web pages or reloading my email shows that it is a data problem.
Those are the primary problems, and I suspect that somehow they are all related. I'm not sure if the Craigslist guy sold me a lemon, or there is some other problem that came up. I've tried multiple ROM's and disabling every app I can think of. Can anyone think of anything that would cause these problems & any way to fix it? Or do I just own a broke phone that I have to throw in the garbage?
Thanks in advance for reading!
a whole slew of problems can lead to a whole slew of possibilities for your issues.
first, i wasnt aware that you could do any of this on a straight talk phone, but i could be wrong. i am not the "expert" you may be looking or hoping for, though one i am sure will show up.
second, i think the response you may get is......did you go to JB straight from Gingerbread??? that will cause HUGE problems.
dd you read OP and follow to a tee??? again HUUUUGGEE problems.
the "never fail" here.....READ READ READ. feel confident as to what you are doing and follow steps one at a time. UNDERSTAND steps one at a time.
first thing that never hurts.....return to stock and start from scratch.

if that doesnt work, you might have to get some mortar, you've got yourself a BRICK.

good luck and be sure and thank the experts

While I have no idea what you're getting at by your Straight Talk comment, as ST is little more than AT&T service that's sold through a 3rd party at a discounted rate, the fact that he's using ST may be part of his problems, at least in regards to the network issues. I'm also having an unbelievable amount of data issues on ST. ST is having some network problems that are affecting a decent amount of customers who are on their AT&T network.
One thing that the OP may want to try is this: Download DNS Changer from the Play Store, and change your primary and secondary DNS to OpenDNS1 and OpenDNS2. Or try different settings, as there are a bunch that are available. That has made at least some difference with my data connectivity issues.
Based on my own experience, having tried to go to JB directly from GB, is that if it's going to affect your radio, it's likely to completely wipe out your EFS data so you won't have ANY cellular or data networking capabilities. As stated, that's simply based on how it worked out for me, and there could easily be other side-effects that just didn't happen to show up for me.
I agree with returning completely to stock UCLB3, with the GB bootloaders. Then flash Entropy's 4.4.2012 Kernel, which will also install CWM Recovery. I'd personally reccomend Heimdall, as it seems to be somewhat simpler. Detailed information on returning to stock via Heimdall can be found in this thread:

If you use it, be sure to thank qkster for making it available. He's probably the most helpful person you're likely to find on this forum, especially where us noobs are concerned.
I would take it back to stock and start all over.
Here is a very helpful thread.

I agree with parrot head. When issues arise go back to stock. That's the best part of our phones. They are damn near impossible to really mess up. Just have to be ware of bootloader flash going wrong. If you got your gb rom from keis your good to go though.

Appreciate the response, guys. I guess it doesn't hurt to try to start from scratch... AGAIN! It just seems like I'm putting an awful lot of hours into putting new ROM's and bootloaders on this phone. Going to be especially frustrating if I go through all the steps and it still doesn't fix my issues, which would mean my phone is broke. Oh well, guess I have little other choice.
All of the issues sound related..
It shouldn't take long to drop to stock and flash up to JB.. I've bobbled and missed steps here and there and have had to return from stock more times than I care to admit.. even rooting and flashing up the ladder only take about 20 minutes if even that..
Good luck!

It shouldn't take long to drop to stock and flash up to JB.. I've bobbled and missed steps here and there and have had to return from stock more times than I care to admit.. even rooting and flashing up the ladder only take about 20 minutes if even that..
Good luck!

Yes, the flashing process isn't that long, it's getting back my phone to all of my customized settings that ends up taking weeks. Home screen icon positioning, logging in to every app, system settings, etc.
Didn't create a backup?

I've always created backups with Titanium Backup, but when I restore the apps, a lot of them ask me to re-login or re-verify myself.
Thanks for the advice guys.
Spent a whole day going back to stock, then CWM red, then ICS, then Jellybean. Things seem to be markedly better, but the phone still seems laggy in a few places. Is this just because it's not the latest and greatest processor?
Also, the GPS just does not work right. It's still identifying me as being in Missouri even though I'm in Nevada. Consistently. Do I just have to live with that?

Are you still using the Trebuchet Launcher that comes built-in to the JB ROM? If so, that may be part of your lag problems. I just use ADW EX launcher. Here's an excerpt from the Paranoid Android JB OP:
******* EVERYONE: If you experience a sudden lag for no reason, IT is due to Trebuchet. GOOD NEWS though... From reading the log cat on my end, there is a very simple fix... Go to settings -Launcher - Homescreen - And Check "Resize any widget" and you are good to go! Instantly fixes the lag problem that a few have been experiencing. I have located the source code that needs to be changed and this will be enabled by default on future builds. ********

As far as the GPS goes, I think Samsung just used ****ty receivers in the Infuse. My GPS isn't quite as bad as yours seems to be, but it's nowhere near as accurate or reliable as the GPS chipset in my crummy little Optimus V.
