I am about to order the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T. I have been debating as to which capacity of storage to get - 32GB or 64GB. This may be a no brainer for most but money is sort of an issue with me. I wondering what benefits beyond the obvious I would get for getting the 64GB version over the 32GB and adding a micro 32GB SD card. Is it really worth spending $100 more to get the 64GB version? Or should I just buy the 32GB SD card for about $35 buck and save $65. Either way, most likely I will buy an SD sooner or later.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
gabato
i got the 32gb version. just by a 32gb or 64gb memory card. thats just my opinion though.
Get 32gb and then a 32gb sd card. Much more cheap or a 64gb sd card will still be cheaper

I got the 64gb and bought a 64gb uSDXC. That's how I roll.
I'd say go 32gb and add a 32gb card. At least, that's what I'm doing. $100 just to double the space is a bit ridiculous.
Buy the 32 gig version and the dock, then connect that to a 2+ terabyte external hard drive through USB. All the storage you could ever need.
I had the 64 GB Prime Ans never really utilized the space. Also ran a 32 GB microsd card that would hold movies and TV shows. Will just buy a 32 infinity. You forget how much of my stuff I stream nowadays. My entire music collection is in the cloud and the video that is not on Hulu plus, Netflix, Time Warner or HBO Go apps expandable memory makes a huge difference. And there are only certain formats it will read from an external hard drive so do some research. I forget off the top of my head what formats work.

The sane answer would be 32 GB and a 32 GB memory card. That would mean I'm insane -- I bought the 64 GB edition (a few weeks before retail release though, so I jumped on the opportunity of having it before 99.99% of other owners and took the budgetary hit ) and I stuck a 32 GB SDHC and a 32 GB microSD in it (if it had been reported that 64 GB would work, I'd put in even more memory, as you can never have enough of that).
Buy the 32 gig and a 64 gig microsd card, you have 64 gig and you save your money
If you need more storage, buy an USB kit, then buy a 2 TB external hard drive and use the USB kit to connect that hard drive to your tablet, buy something call "USB hub" that let you connect a full size sd card to the USB kit, if i'm correct maximum storage of sd card is 512 gig, so now you have
32 (internal storage) + 64 (microsd) + 2048 gig (external hard drive) + 512 gig (sd card) = 2656 gig
Get the 32gb card for sure, the TF700 has issues reading 64gb cards. Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761861
If you plan on getting the dock it reads 128/64gb cards no problem (its a full size SD port on the dock).
Hope this helps!

With the thoughts and insights in the replies, I ordered the tablet. Unfortunately, I will have to wait a while to get it. Amazon has it back ordered.
Thanks for your replies.
The rational behind getting the 64GB version would be if you need more of the FASTEST storage. While there are plenty of ways to increase storage capacity, none matches the transfer speed of the local storage.
But this PC Mag review says something interesting about the 64GB version of the device.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2406244,00.asp
We tested the 64GB model and found that it only accepted microSD cards up to 16GB.

At the moment, many people can't use class 10 64GB cards in the TF700, they work in the dock though. And class 6 64GB cards work in the device.
So there's lots of issues when it comes to storage. "If" they resolve all issues with the JB update, the built in storage would be fastest.
Of course everyone has to make their own call. But given the varied issues, I'm planning to get the 32GB version. Just because so many people are getting the 32GB version and there is usually more strenght in numbers. So the 32GB version might have class 10 64GB cards working, before the 64GB device works with anything higher than 16GB cards and local storage issues resolved. Also, with so many people getting the 32GB version, most Dev work will likely be performed with that device. Which would mean if there are issues with a Developer's work on the 64GB version it may be harder to get a fix.

To each their own. As detailed throughout the linked tread, people have had positive results with various cards of their choice. But most encounter issues with 64GB class 10. It remains to be seen if the JB update will especially address that.

I didn't read through all the responses. I saw a lot of discussing this issues regarding what cards work and don't.
I think someone posted the article on PCmag about buying tablets with more storage. Really, what is said, the extra money is just a lot more profit for the manufactures since it costs less than $10 to add the extra memory.
In my opinion, there is the hard fact about the cost. I think you have to look at how you use your device and what you plan to store. Personally, I went with the 32GB version since the tablet has the SDHC slot. Most likely, this is more than enough storage for ninety percent of users. That's a lot of apps to fill up. The storage suck is if you keep a lot of video, or 1080p DD5.1 and high bit rate. You could do it if you keep your whole music collection on it as well. Maybe in the future some games will need more space with they're more a full fledge games like you find on PCs or consoles. I think it's more an issue with tablets like Nexus 7 that come in significantly smaller configurations--8GB or 16GB.
Heck, I just spent $50, from Amazon's deal of the day, and got Scandisk SDXH 64GB card. It appears to be working, but I haven't fully tested everything out. I've read Titanium Backup can have issues with it. I've barely touched the memory on the tablet.
I don't know you know for nothing. I would suggest getting the 32GB version and use the $100 on something else, such as a keyboard, case/cover, extenral battery, apps, and so forth.
I bought the 64gb version for one reason. On my phone I would install a couple of games from gameloft and it would install in the phone and not on the sd card. The game wouldnt work if I moved it to the sd card, so at the rate the games are going now they are going to require more space. I just didnt want to be stuck like I was with my G2x. Music, Pics, Movies all are on SD cards and games will be left in the internal storage.

Hey guys,
got my new SanDisk 32GB MicroSDHC (Class 2) Card yesterday and it is performing great so far.
But before that, I'd like to warn you that there are tons of fake cards floating around.
I bought a 32GB Card one week ago and it turned out to be fake:
h**p://img517.imageshack.us/img517/6867/unbenannt3kj.jpg
I've tested to write the full capacity to the card but apparently this card only holds up to 1,9GB.
DON'T BUY FROM EBAY OR OTHER "SMALL BUSINESS SHOPS" You'll most likely get a fake card.
Really pissed after this experience I decided to buy from a reliable computer shop and spend more money and received my 32GB Card yesterday, and what can I say? It's better than I expected for a Class 2 card.
Check out the results here:
h**p://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4060/s32gbsdhc.jpg
As you can see, this card is genuine and you can write up to ~30GB to it.
The write speed with 5,21mb/s is pretty good for a Class 2 Card. Also the read speed is quite decent with 14 mb/s
This is more than sufficient for HD video recording and all the other things you'd wanna do with your Galaxy S.
I didn't expierence any lags with my phone using this card. Switching between photos, music etc.... all goes very smoothly.
Here's also a HDTune (3.50) shot for you guys interested in the read iops:
h**p://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1818/s32gbsdhc2.jpg
Verdict: All things considered, I think this card performs fairly well without slowing down my Galaxy S. Watching tons videos/photos, listening to a huge music library and not having to worry about storage is really great.
The only downside of this card is the price (I've paid 108€) but considering the fact that the iPhone with 32GB is bloody expensive and with this card you would have up to 40GB of storage on your Galaxy S, this card is really a bargain and I fully recommend it.
That's great! I'm also considering to buy one the 16gb class4 version, but it seems difficult to find in Europe.

I've bought it in Germany (ARLT Computer).
talking about memory and disk stuff,
32GB=32.000.000.000 bytes
wich is, 30517,58 MB or 29,80 GB
this is for the simple fact
a 8GB hard disk contains 8.000.000.000 bytes
a 8GB ram stick contains 8*1024*1024*1024=8589934592 bytes
That's a lot of cash considering a non-fake Toshiba Class 2 16gb is currently selling for £17.99 delivered in the UK?
€108 equates to about £90!
32GB cards are currently considerably more expensive than 2 x 16GB cards.
Where's the deal on that 16GB in the UK btw...?
So you can use micro SD HC cards with the galaxy s? I was told that you had to use an adapter because the device only has a micro SD slot? Sorry if this is a silly question, i haven't really dealt with external flash storage that much apart from my old sony ericsson walkman phone which used stick pro duo or something like that.

Yea, it doesn't lag; at least there is nothing what I would describe as "laggy".
It does take some time to load 100s of photos on the gallery app, but I think this is quite normal.
At least if I view a hires picture, it opens up near instantly. Switching between pics and focusing also happens very quickly.
I'm happy with it so far. Having used this card for more than two months I don't have any complaints at all and I fully recommend it.

Gtab will support up to 32gb microsd. so yes 16gb will work just fine, this is what I am currently using as I don't want to pay around $100 for a 32gb card. I am using a 16gb class 4 (Patriot memory) and it works really well, I have also tested a 16gb class 2 (SanDisk) and I really don't see any difference in the feel or performance. I assume that higher class would be faster data transfer but haven't had any issues with a class 2 or 4 yet (I keep my music library on SD2).
I purchased a couple of those from NewEgg. That manufacturer has given me NOTHING but problems with their SDHC cards.

I have an OEM 32GB Sandisk microSD, and it works just fine in the device (so far).
As for ADATA, I have a relationship with them now which I will pass on... in 2008, my wife had gotten me a Class 6 16GB SDHC by ADATA, it had a "lifetime limited" warranty. Last July, I started using it pretty heavily in my Pandgital Novel, a LOT of remove / reinserts as I was testing mods on it. It quickly disintegrated (literally, the outer case fell apart - I have never seen anything like it).
So, I called them. Several times. At first they weren't going to honor the warranty as they claimed it was unusual wear and tear. But, I was persistent and slightly irate at points ("I will never buy from you again, and neither will anyone in Slatedroid!") and they eventually caved and gave me an RMA. It was a long process but my replacement card is now on its way to my home. So, in the end, they did honor the warranty but "the squeaky wheel gets the oil", as the saying goes.
Very insightful..Thanks for the replies..Won't know till I am there.Might just get a 32gb and be done with it...At work and can't wait to get off so I can root this thing...

Just a reminder (its been pointed out in this forum and many others), but you're wasting your money on a "faster" class micro sdhc card for use in a g-tablet. The higher class cards are all with respect to WRITE speeds. You also need special hardware to take advantage of the faster write speeds. Usually fast writing hardware is only found in expensive digital SLR cameras. If your device doesn't mention the ability to make use of the faster write speeds then a class 2 card will perform identically to a class 6 card, etc.
I am 95% sure that Adata makes the cards that Micro Center sells cheap, under their name.
With that in mind, I have bought many MicroSD(HC), SD(HC), and USB flash drives over the years from them, and had a few fail. However, they have a lifetime warranty on them too, and all I have to do is take it to the store, and they replace it on the spot. No receipt, nothing.
They don't have a 32GB MicroSDHC card yet, but I am eagerly waiting for them to so I can get one. Best they got for now is a 16GB for $24.
Like roebeet mentioned... nothing but failure after failure on all of them. Lifetime warranty or not, it's not worth the hassle returning it, copying data, etc..etc..
I guess, it all depends on if your time is worth more to you then a few dollars more for a "name brand" SDHC card that won't fail after a few months.
Size of card.
I answered this 3 weeks ago. The limit is 32GB, and my Sandisk works well on my stock gTablet. I bought the micro card locally at a Verizon Wireless store. No other retailer in the Philadelphia area carried a 32GB micro card, not even on their Web sites. I have audio and video files on the card; no hiccups when playing same.

It would be nice to know if the gtab supports SDXC as well as SDHC. What say you Viewsonic?
Supposedly there is no real distinction between SDHC and SDXC 3.0 specs. Hardware wise it is the same. Other OSes (Android?) should be able to support SDXC with support drivers. This would mean any current SDHC device can be SDXC with a software update. SDHC won't support SDXC 4.0 specs (which isn't final yet) which features higher data transfer rates. That is according to wikipedia at least...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital
I don't believe micro SDXC cards exists just yet.
I still don't understand why manufacturers aren't using full size SD cards, they're cheaper and with tablets the size they are, a full size SD won't add much to it. It would save everyone a lot of money.

^ This. On an iphone sized device, sure uSD makes a decent savings size. On a 7+ inch tablet not so much. I wouldn't mind playing around with some USB SD readers and seeing if they work. If so you might be able to fit one somewhere in the chassis. There is the USB port, just need space to solder to the leads and add a hub and/or reader.

I'm having a tough time deciding whether or not to get the 32gig model or the regular 16. I don't plan on really storing any video or mp3s on the tablet, if anything I'll just use it to store games/apps and GPS maps. Do you think a 32gig is overkill for just that?
Yes since you have a microSD slot and unlimited web storage.
Isn't the web storage only for a year?

It's not really overkill, I was in the same boat as you, since the built-in memory is much faster than any microSDHC you can put there.
However, after thinking a lot, I decided to buy the 16gig version.
1. For $100 I can buy a good speedy 32gig microSDHC for a total of 48gig, IMO, this is better value.
2. I currently have the iPad 2 for testing, near 70 installed apps, 1gig of HD videos, 2+gig of music, near 1GB of pictures, apps + browser + email cache, etc... for a total of 8gig used. This means that the built-in 16gig should more than good for a lot of apps, cache and other main stuff, while the local media goes to the SD card.
I'll be the voice of dissension.
I see SD expansion as a means of accessing temporary, view once/not often type files. If you're augmenting your main system memory with SD the minute you buy something, I feel you've already admitted you should have bought more onboard storage.
The minute you start loading apps or data for apps onto SD is the minute you remove any capability to start swapping your SD cards.
Of course, if you really do only plan on doing what you stated 16gb might be enough for quite a while. For me, I'm always a, "what if", sort of hardware buyer.
If you want to pay $100 more for "what if" then go ahead. By the time you use up 16GB + 16GB OR 32GB microSD card, there will be tablets coming out with 64GB and 128GB internal storage which will render yours useless.
Spend the $100 on accessories or the dock.
If you have money to burn then I guess 32GB wouldn't hurt with 32GB microSD card and 64GB SD card for the dock.
For games/apps/gps maps... definitely go 16GB.
My SGS only has 2 gigs of internal storage, and atm I have ~ 110 apps installed on it. Of those 2 gigs, I have 1.16GB of free space left. I've not set any of my apps to be run from the microSD card, either.
I'm not sure how much data the maps will take up (when I updated my stand-alone GPS, the DB was less than a gig in size...), but worst case that's something you could easily put on a microSD card for MUCH less than $100 (a 32Gig one won't cost you 100!).
The tablet itself has a MicroSD slot. The dock has a standard SD slot, and the USB ports can be used for mass storage devices... 32Gig is way overkill for how you describe your needs.
Plan on getting the 16g one, and thats the one I have on order. But if the 32g shows its face before my 16g one ships. I'll be all over that.

I'm paying a $70 premium to not lock down my SD card. I don't like painting myself into a corner. 16gb of course might be plenty for the OP, I just don't agree with people implying SD expansion comes with zero negative penalties.
Well i went for the 16gb version and popped a 16gb class 10 card in (£16.99) and have bought a 500gb portable HD (£35). That should give me plenty
Admittedly though accessing the SD card isnt as easy as internal memory from many of the apps but things like music and photos and ebooks were found automatically
What is your opinion in this?
Is 16GB enough? Or is it wiser to get the 32GB model?
I got a 16GB and am happy with it. I won't keep that much media on it anyway, and if I want more space, I have the microSD card slot. The difference between 16 and 32GB is $100, but you could get the 16GB and a 32GB MicroSD card for less than $500.
Oh, and with the keyboard dock, I can get SDHC cards for even cheaper. I already have a 16GB MicroSD in it... If I should want more space, I'll just get a 16 or 32GB SDHC card.
FYI, you cannot install or move apps to the microsd/SD without rooting (yet). Even then, you'd be hard pressed to fill up the 16GB with apps. Let's say an app avgs 10MB, that means you can have 1600 apps. You've got other issues if you have 1600+ apps installed.
For larger apps, the data portion can be installed on the external media. I have World Series of Poker which installs about 10MB to the internal memory and 380MB to the external when launched.
In short, I think 16GB is fine. Just make sure the music/videos/pics stay on the external media.
16gb is more than enough with the microsd slot on the tablet...if you need extra storage, the two usb ports on the docking station can help...you can even use external hard drives like western digital passport..
by no mean I'm saying the 32gb is bad..I just think it's hard to justify the $100 premium
Ah, ok - thanks guys.
Personally, I'm going for the 32GB model. I plan to have a lot of movies/TV on my TF, and though I can fit a fair bit with a 32GB microSD and a 64GB SD card, I'd still like to have as much storage from the get-go as I can.

How do you do this? My data folder for Spectral Souls alone is 1GB...

Could you help me decide?
I want to browse internet, read ebooks, have 100 apps/games installed and have it running smooth.
I have a speady 64GB external SD card.
Do I really need the 64GB model?
You may think that you provided enough info to get help but you missed the fact that what matters is the size of the applications not the quantity of them alone. If you're using games that have huge storage requirements then only you can account for that, not the community.
There is already a thread about how much free space to expect from a 32gb model (about 25gb) so do your own estimating.
No need for 64 GB. 32 GB should do just fine, especially with a 64GB external SD card.
Edit: I've been asking myself the same question. I just can't justify paying $100 for 32 GB extra.

I think is a question many of us ask. Some Apps, specially some of the HQ racing games and FPS take up a fair amount of space. You can offload much of the content to the external drive. I personally always opt for the highest storage.
I don't play much games usually, so I can live without heavy gaming
I also generally thing that 64gb is the way to go but 64gb mean that the tablet is not yet released for sale and it will be much more pricey...
So I try to convince myself that 32gb + 64gb SD is OK

Another vote for 32GB+64GB.
Although, I can't seem to write to the external SD card, apparently this is an issue with 4.4.2
I also vote for 32 + 64.
Of course it depends on how you use the device. I'm not a "cloud" lover and prefer to have stuff on it rather than dropboxed, etc.
In my use cases, I only really need lots of space when I take it for a vacation and want to take movies/tv shows along. If we're talking 720p or 1080p, then the files can be pretty big. Another use is music, I use lossless (.flac) a lot and they're also bigger.
Still, you can always buy a 128 GB card later (I'm sure they'll be compatible and cheaper in some time) and you can also connect an external portable hard drive via USB3, if ocasionally you really need to take lots of data along. The only catch is that I think NTFS is not supported.
Unless you have a ton of very large apps/games that can't use external storage, 32gb with sd should work for most folks. I just re encode my videos without HD audio and they fit fine on my 64gb sd. If I need anymore, I'll use my ext 1tb hd with the otg adapter. In either case, an extra 32gb wouldn't make a huge difference for me, and certainly not worth $100.

Agree with the 32gb recommendation. Just be aware of the issues with writing to external SD cards on Kitkat. If you use AirDroid for transfer of files to your tablet over WiFi it could be an issue.
This is something I had an issue with, which one to get. Best Buy solved that for me by only having the 32gb version. While I'm the store, I thought about this, get an external hard drive and have even more memory. So, I bought a 1tb hard drive for 65 (on sale) and hooked it up using a USB otg cable. For less than the price of the 64gb model, I have more memory now

This will be my first tablet, I think I want a 64GB LTE but could I use a Flash usb drive instead of a complete external HD?
