How to stop being a leech to the xda community? - HTC One S

Hey so I am pretty new to the xda forums and what not and would really like to contribute something. I'm broke too broke to donate. all I have that can be any help is an HTC one s I'm too afraid to mess with anymore and an awful computer that I am willing to use to help people on here. Any suggestions? I just want to stop being a leech and a noob.

You could start by reading up on everything related to Android development. Everyone started out as a noob, Google and these forums are your friend. If you can't donate, hit that thanks button at the bottom of the posts.

Or help answer questions in the Q&A section.

This is probably the worst comment ive read here, this is a community and a member wants to help and give a little back and your hating. If we would have more members that try and help and give something back xda would be a much better community.
To the op, theres guides on the development thread on how to develop for our devices, if you want to help you should read or you could probably pm a dev for more info, their very nice and they know a lot, could learn a lot from them.

Try and obtain knowledge about the device, how it works, how you can tell what it's doing, etc..
The ways to do this are: search and browse the forums, google outside of xda, look in your device.
Then you can either go for a specific goal, like s-off, your favorite missing feature, better battery life, etc.. and focus your searching and reading in that direction, or more opportunistically, come up with tweaks and tricks based on what you come across while dissecting the device.
At first it will seem daunting. Try and follow guides and how-to's and try to understand what they do and why that works.
As you become more familiar with how the device and related tools work, you can help out other members with their problems and questions.
Thanks for your interest in contributing.
Good hunting!

Organization in forums

I am in no way going to point out people because that is wrong but could everyone try to have a little more organization with their post? I know that mods will agree when I say that there are questions in the development section that should not be there . And please search before you post a new topic because I can think on a couple of simple issues there are three or four post on the issue. I love trying to lend help to people and it is just a lot easier if I only have to post how to help with battery life on one thread instead of four. And once again, I'm not trying to upset people, I think it would benefit the captivate and even galaxy s users as a whole if we used a little better organization skills :-D

True, what might help is a Q&A or FAQ stickied with common questions, or howto's... that not only explain howto, or answer the questions but also link to current threads that discuss the topic in greater detail...
I agree. A q&a would help a lot . Or even possibly a whole how to section for simple things like optimization.

Community issues: Campaign for a fresh start

Hi guys,
You probably already know me from my other threads, mostly the support thread. If not, I would like to give a brief introduction: in june, I received an upgrade from at&t and decided to purchase the infuse 4g my first android phone.
I was thrilled with its performance, and the community started off strong. ROM's were coming out surprisingly fast, actually too fast for me to figure out which one I liked best.
I began to see that the developers threads were getting cluttered up with silly, often repeated questions, so I created a support thread to help lessen the load for the devs. I know it wasn't a perfect solution, but I helped build a small team of people who have been incredibly helpful so far, who I am beyond impressed with.
Now comes the bad part. Even my support thread, originally designed to avoid clutter, has become a landfill of lazy people who don't look for the answer to their question which has been asked and answered 30 times already.
All the devs have been subjected to so much bs that they are afraid to even release their work. Everyone flames everyone like crazy, but none of you guys can help the community. I am disgusted by most of your behaviors, and hope that you see how childish your arguments are.
Now, for my point: this community is still young, and we have accomplished so much already. We have the chance to have one of the strongest development teams out there, and a kick-ass community, in which we look out for each other's best interest.
I would like to propose a way to get things started again: we need a campaign to delete clutter/flame.
Neo works hard, but we need to help him out. Everyone, I urge you to look through your posts, find bad ones, and mark them in some way to be deleted. This is in order to resuscitate this potentially unbeatable community.
Thank you all, and I hope you understand my intentions

constructive crticism welscome
Moderator's(Neo) intervention was required as gtg's thread was going out of control.
as after his intervention members have started behaving themselves and Neo has removed/locked unnecessary threads this forum is at peace.
let the dead bury the dead and do not remind people again of what happened.
Just post relevant stuff and that is sufficient for everybody.
P.S.
if issues are not resolved then it never will be as no one will accept blame and any such thread will eventually result in blame game.
right now see that people are just paying attention to information, now calling them for campaign is also a distraction.

Hey, thanks for sharing your opinion with me in a respectful manner. However, I feel that the issue is not yet resolved, and the general forum is definitely the appropriate place to post it. The development is virtually at a standstill and I am not talking about gtg, but the other devs and would be devs who are now discouraged. I find that although your response was polite, it was completely inappropriate, especially considering what my original post stated. If you have an issue with my posts please message in private as opposed to calling me out/ racking up your post count.

release there work, but rather punish and don't release, which its necessary to shut alt of people up, can always find them on irc

I'm glad you guys are willing to help out in getting this show on the road. This can only be done by helpful members, especially the ones who read the rules and abide by them.
I think the main issue at hand is that people tend to speak their mind too often, in situations where a moderator should intervene. The best course of action is to report a post or PM a mod (for the Infuse, that's me ) and let them know what's going on.
I'm not on the board 24/7, so I too can miss stuff. But there are ALWAYS other mods who look after the Infuse forums when I can't, so reporting is the BEST thing you can do.
About "rebooting" the community: People are already getting annoyed by the lazy, demanding types, who don't use the search and just post another question which has been asked a million times before. Well, at least if it's in the Q&A forum, it's controlled. So that's our main focus for now: get people to ask their questions there, instead of the development or general forums.
This thread can stay open, as long as it's constructive criticism. All ideas are welcome, as long as it helps us out, right?

I wasn't aware that there was a Q&A forum until you mentioned it. I'm using the xda app and have the SAMSUNG Infuse 4g as my favorite, but within that category, the Q&A forum isn't listed. I clicked onto the forum tab and scrolled till I found the Q&A forum. Yeah people can search for it, but I wasn't even aware that forum existed. I just suggest adding the forum into the Infuse 4g category. I think there will be less questions asked in the wrong section if it was listed.

I think alot of people like myself are new android users. I knew nothing 3 months ago about Android then I got the infuse my first smartphone which seems like its a lot of peoples first android. So I admit I posted questions then went and found the answer when I got no replies. I think people just need to understand that this is very fresh for a lot of people. And I think another reason why we see a lot of similar topics being posted especially regarding support is because new users (like myself) feel we need support about our specific situation, even tho we may have already read a similar thrend. Its happened to me were I posted help and either ill get a smart reply ie "its been posted 10 times already" or they may reply with a link. The link will be exactly what I've already read but, the thrend doesn't 100% pertain to my situation so I'm afraid I may mess up even more if I follow those steps (its actually already happened,my first brick) This is why we may see a lot of repeat thrends. I usually will encourage my support giver to pm me but I hardly receive any.

Why not have a separate section for rom support? I realize that sounds goofy but in the rom thread could be development related questions and in support section help and tech support?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Well, xda-developers is for... DEVELOPERS. Although most people on xda are in it for the custom roms and leeching of apps.
I agree there should be some kind of a "noob sandbox" where new users can ask their questions and get answers from more seasoned users/devs. But how do you guys propose we do that?

[Apology] Bring the Hox Community Together

This community here has been strong, informative and helpful to many Hox users. IMO, it has also been used to flame, disrespect, and challenge personal opinions in several threads. I myself have fallen into this pit. I just wanted everyone to read a thread posted in the EVO LTE forums from a person whom not only fell into this pit himself, but recognized it and publically corrected himself to better bring back his community. Im not implying anything against the Hox community, but just hope it can serve as an example, that we stand stronger united and can/will accomplish much more as individual minds coming together. Not individuals thinking a mind. Please click the link below, to read how this xda member noted his closed mindness, and forfeited it for the good of his community.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29136185
With this said, there are great feats still to be accomplished for the Hox devices. Let's all put our 2 cents in where we can, put away the other 98, and make these feats into accomplishments!!

Nobody comes here asking to be bashed on or fussed at like a kid. You also have to understand the flip side of the coin. People come here and start threads to ask the same basic questions that people have answered 500 times already. Questions that would have been easily answered in 10 seconds had they done a search first. Its frustrating.
Yes, there are no stupid questions. Yes we were all noobs at one point. Part of learning is figuring basic out things yourself by doing some research though.

Agreed 100%. There are a million threads that could have been avoided simply by SEARCHING. If you can navigate to XDA using your browser, you have the skills necessary to use the search function. People are just lazy and don't want to do any reading, they'd rather someone just respond with an answer. Super annoying, my .02.

This. It is painfully evident when people don't search even though they say they do when and that's when I'll come in with a snarky post. You can't tell me you searched for the method to root 1.85 when there is a STICKY with the procedure in development, and 4 other threads on the first two pages of Q+A asking the same question, with people providing answers. Sorry, but I don't buy it. If you want me to put forth some effort into helping you, you must put forth the effort to help yourself first.
That all said, if it shows that you did do some research but still need some clarification on a few things, you betcha I will be willing to help to the best of my ability. I may be an asshole sometimes, but I am actually a really nice guy and I do enjoy helping people out. Just don't start our e-relationship on a lie ("I searched, I swear!") and we'll get along famously.
Training noobs, snarky fun posts, they help teach and make xda a fun place. Mostly, I'm referring to the heated debates, and hateful posts that have crippled some of our unreplacable threads and formed hatefulness between members. By all means, I love when an opportunity arises for me to get a few people to laugh, please, keep them coming when you see fit

I agree that there are times where a lot of us get really upset and lose our cool. And that we should try to keep that to a minimum.
But this isn't exactly a forum for extremely basic questions at the same time, even though we all have some from time to time, there are tons of other forums like that though. And some people are obviously trolling too ("HTC done it wrong" guy, lol....)
The only thing that ticks me off about this community are the "should I get a galaxy s3" threads. No one cares. This is an enthusiast forum for the HOX. If you want to talk gs3 go over there.
If this was a BMW enthusiast forum you would be flamed to hell if you wrote a topic like "should I switch to a mustang?".

XDA was a great place even when I joined during the GS1 era. However, it slowly turned into turned to crap with the success Android garnered though. Aside from the flame bait or post-purchase rationalization threads, the general user of this forum feels the developers OWE it to the users to make their devices better, for free. Not even joking. There were some people who expressed that in their posts in the Nexus S forums. Then there are the people who don't even bother to read instructions or stickies and when they brick their device they blame the developers. I like to help people as much as the next guy once being a noob myself, but it ain't fun when I answer the same question I know I answered last week.

How many times do you see a question asked that was answered just a few posts prior within the same thread.

My imei is just fine. Thanks

Why is everyone so rude

I have been a member for some time now and xda mods and users are insane. We are losing people to other forums due to the fact whenever a person asks a question he is flamed by mods and other users ex. Wrong section search before you ask Wtf if someone has a question answer them. Half the time a user downloads a Rom and messes up there phone and they start to bug out cause they think they ****ed up there phone beoynd fixing and then they ask how to fix it and get told you are in wrong section and to use the search function (which sux I might add)They are coming here because we have the knowledge to help them. They are not coming here to get a attitude. Some of the users will help them but for the few that give them a hard time , think about if the shoe was on the other foot and you rude people needed help with something would you want someone to give u **** for asking a question. This was one of the best forums about 5 years ago now its not so great. That's just my 2 cents and I know I am posting in the wrong section. But that is what mods are for to move it into the right section, back in the day a mod would kindly say I moved your thread to this section end of story, with no flame and no need to make the poster feel like a ass

People answering questions are doing that out of their own free will, donating their time, energy, and knowledge. And though moving threads is one of a mod's roles, they are donating time as well. We have no right to expect help or time from others, especially when we don't follow rules made to make XDA a more productive and useful place.
For example, it's a courtesy to devs to keep their threads clean, so they can figure out bugs and dev hints quickly and easily without sifting through junk. It lets them figure out problems faster and, therefore, makes it easier for them to dev the ROMs we all use. And even in the general forums, people don't want to see and answer the same vague and/or general question (eg. Which is the best ROM) once a week.
I obviously wasn't here 5 years ago, but I bet there were fewer people then, so there were fewer noobs and, therefore, fewer noob questions, so there were fewer people exasperated with noob questions, and therefore fewer noob answers. So that makes sense.
I want to make clear that I don't condone rudeness on the Internet any ore than elsewhere, but as long as no one is being actually rude, I don't think it's out of line for members to tell noobs to follow forum rules made for everyone's benefit.

To me, those responses seem perfectly justified. If the OP had simply looked at the Ace Think Tank thread, he would have found a clear, nicely formatted, step by step way to fix his problem. It's not members' responsibility to post him a link; it's his own responsibility to find information already so nicely created, packaged and placed, explicitly for noobs, for him to read.
Great devs have left because of these assholes sadly.

Rules are meant to be followed. If you're too much of a noob to understand why, then you didn't watch the video and need to read more and un noobify yourself. It's amazing how much laziness results in people feeling picked on. You're given the material and you need to make an effort to use it.

Yes there's a video because there's 4859572958352858.5 rules and you should know each and every one. You don't do it when buying a car but dammit you better read the terms and conditions of this forum. Soon enough you'll have to print em, sign in triplicate and mail in before posting.

That would be excellent! Just kidding. But most of the rules are pretty much common sense. Don't post in a forum clearly labeled for developers if you aren't a developer, don't ask questions that have already been answered, and dont be vague when asking for help.
I agree with people doing there own research, it does take time with trying to search for things, the first time I rooted took me 3-4 hours just to search and make sure I wasn't going to mess anything up. Then when I wanted a custom rom it was easy breezy because I knew the terms. Id still consider myself a noob, everyone's a noob in my book cause they learn everyday if theyel weren't whenever roms come out they wouldn't have any bugs or glitches...but they do and therefore they learn how to fix it.

You're as in you are. Not your. Man if you only read the dictionary jkjk. I agree SOME people may get mad and post inappropriate things but you have to read the rules and understand everything before posting. Instead of posting I search. I am on the app and I'm aware that searching isn't the best for the app BUT do you forget we have a browser on our phone as well as Google its not that they wake up and say "hey, today I think I'm going to troll Gizmoe(or said name) and be rude instead of answering". Its not their job to walk you through something if the answers there. I've had my own fights and misunderstandings on here with members but in the end they were right because I didn't read everything 114% so read before asking. And read again before asking. The devs are amazing at what they do and they don't need the stress of answering more questions then needed. The search bar is there for a reason. Take advantage of it. Or they may just go "here's said app/rom/theme/other use it." Thanks for listening and take the advice. READ AND RESEARCH <3 have a wonderful day.

Yea most people are jerks but if they weren't then all the noobs would be asking the same question over and over again. It's not hard if you research. When I was a noob I researched and when I was ready to root I researched more just incase anything bad would happen. People are just lazy and don't take the time to research.

For someone who's new you should really learn how to either voice your opinions eloquently or refrain from them altogether.
It is better that the user voiced his opinion so that a discussion could start to be able to clear any possible misconceptions or if so were the case, for the comunity to improve where it is lacking.

I think that perhaps you have missed the idea that this is a DEV's forum and not an Android 101 one. That means that you can get help if you do what you are supposed to, which is read, do research and then ask. If you mess your phone and you don´t have a clue of what you have done, you can blame no one for that. Belive me I have helped lots of people and even have writen guides and tutorials on how to sort the most common issues, but you usually find people asking the same questions without even doing a simple search. If you are willing to be part of a forum then you should comply with the rules. From the links you provided I don´t see nobody being rude but realistic. If you don´t know what you are doing or the risk that you are facing, then you should refrain from doing it instead of coming here and blame the tools and dev's.
The DEV's that have left XDA, at least in the case I am aware of, was not for everybody being rude, but for the moderators editing his comments to users. The real and annoying reason is to be dealing with noobs thinking dev's owe them answers and support and getting mad when they face reality.
Let me clear something up I was not saying that anyone was rude to me. I have been here long enough that I know what I can ask and what I have to search for on my own. I was referring to the way new people are treated for asking questions.

[IMPORTANT][INFORMATION]Da Rulez

Remember I am not a moderator. I am only here to help!
Hi all,
As you all know we have a very nice collection of ROMS here in this section of XDA. And I must say, I love it and I will continue testing ROMS and kernels.
It is amazing how this section has grown. And more ROMS and developers are comming here to share their work.
However, every single thread I see people asking:
ETA's
Battery life
Will this work, will that work
Can you please add.....
When will you update this ROM with this base etc..
These things are not on the right place here.
As you all know we also don't have an own Q&A and General subforum like the Samsung Galaxy S / S Advance. I do understand why you put these questions here. It's the I9001 subforum.. But these questions are not on the right place here.
So we made these threads ourselfs:
[Q&As][REQs][etc]Q&A, REQ, PLEASE POST HERE!
Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 General
Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 Q&A
Yes I know these threads are somewhat chaotic. But, these threads are for us and our beloved phone.
I think we need some basicrules in here. Remember one important thing THIS IS THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION OF THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S PLUS AKA ARIESVE AKA I9001.
Da rulez:
Read the XDA Rules: Link
Do not ask for ETA's (ETA stands for Estimated Time of Arrival)
Do not ask the developer to update the ROM with the newest base. If he/she has time it will be done. (it is not a must!!)
Do not ask the same thing in every thread (so if you ask something about a governor ask this in one kernel thread not in three)
Try before you ask. If you want to know something about a ROM read the thread, try and then ask.
Always read the instructions given bij the OP/Developer
Do not spam the thread. Trolling is funny I know but it has nothing to do with development. (WE NEED AN OFF TOPIC THREAD HERE :silly: )
If you have an important bug to report. Make a logcat.
Before posting anything, you must use the SEARCH button at the top of the webpage.
Respect each other. This is important. We all started as noobs as explaind here: Link
Use English when you are posting something here. If you are sending a private message to someone with the same language as you it's fine to use it. But post in English please.
If you are a new member here then please take a look here: Link
If you see something completly unfair/ against the rules / disrespectfull or whatever. Please use the report button it has an !
As a senior member of XDA I wish you good luck here. Happy flashing/modding/tweaking.
Cheers

I did. A while ago. I sent a message to Whisky01 and he said it will be discussed.. But I havent heard from him ever since.
AW: [IMPORTANT][INFORMATION]Da Rulez
In my opinion opening a topic for general things, will lead into a complete mess, because everyone wants to post questions to a different Rom or topic. So I would support these subforums i9000 users have for our phone.
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda app-developers app
Okay, before we get any discussion I want to explain why I made this thread.
As we all know this community is huge, our section is getting bigger and bigger. New ROMS, Kernels and developers.
We also get new users who wants to help and got questions. For me as a newbie 7 months ago it was hard to get answers and solutions for my problems. I was hoping I got my 10 postcount as soon as possible so that I could participate in the development section. Back then I was very noob and was helping and answering where ever I could and that lead to problems and random posts/discussions. To prevent suchs issues I create this topic to get the basic rules of XDA easy explaind in one simple topic. I refer to the original rules and topics made by moderators and admins. But still, this thread is easy to read (at least I hope )
Another reason for this thread is this:
I see comments like this:
+1
Click to collapse
When will you update this ROM
Click to collapse
Any news????
Click to collapse
When are you releasing a fix
Click to collapse
Etc etc.
These comments are annoying, and in particular the +1 comments.. I hate them, and they fill the topic for no reason.
I also want to prevent "problems". Problems like spamming and misunderstanding.
These rules are in no way against anything on XDA. If you as user got any problems with this topic or even me. Sent me a PM please.

Jup thats true.
I think I make a poll to show to the moderator/admins to get our own subforum
Wrong threat
AW: [IMPORTANT][INFORMATION]Da Rulez
This is no discussion thread! These are the XDA rules, if you want to stay here, follow them, if you dont follow them, leave. Theres nothing to discuss about.
Also, we asked for a i9001 forum multiple times, i dont get why they dont do **** about that. Its annoying as hell everything is mixed with i9000 things. I saw a guy who flashed a i9001 kernel on his 9000 because he thought the 9001 kernel are the "new ones".
For gods sake even the GS Advance has his own forum....whats the matter?

So they can give moderator to any developer on this forum, ex. broodplank, or someone else. I think we can move threads at us own. Only baricade is ... we don't have forum...
I have an idea. It's a little annoyng but we all can report this post to mod's with reason ex. "We want to have forum for our phone, please, read that topic". But OP must insert info about that in 1st post. What do you think about that?
we need to vote for a new forum and show them the votes (just to say that we are a lot and we want it)
Guys guys guys, this.topic.of.us getting a new forum has been discussed many times in the past, all with the negative ans frm mods.

XDA Forums generally have bad organization and very bad moderation. They are here only to punish you...
I am and was mod/supermod on many Tech Forums in my country, the biggest has 300.000 members, and it's organization is 100 times better then this. I had hundreds of posts, and know how good forum work. A lot sub-forums for better member orientation, gentle and kind mods who always have advice for you how to be better, and not warnings...
That's why simple members treat them with respect and not with arogance...

Samsung Galaxy SII/SIII HTC One X/X+ etc.. Our device is not so populair....
But please stop this discussion, this is not going to end..
