[Q] After reading these forums I'm a little scared about buying a Transformer...

Hey all! No Transformer here yet, using my trusty G-tablet. Anyway, there seems to be alot of quality control issues. Not just screen bleed and dirt under the screen but some completely device breaking things that seem to be happening all to often. Screens not working, bricking after update, gaps in the screen, not waking up from sleep, digitizer crapping out every now and then, weird artifacts popping up, not being able to charge, and devices just dieing randomly are some of problems I see people posting about. It would be more understandable if this was a mass produced device that is openly available but being that it's under limited production and has only been out for a few weeks, I find these problems showing up at an alarming rate. Not only that but because it's currently limited production if your tablet dies your out of luck for a few weeks until (hopefully) they send you a new one. So what do you think? Asus having problems producing these devices or am I just magnifying it a bit to much?

My Transformer seems to be perfect, besides Honeycomb needing an update or two. No light bleed, no dust, no bad pixels, etc.
Works great! Great device for the price point.

Keep in mind that only a few folks reported some issues - which is expected for any device. Majority are not having any issues at all and it received rave reviews from many tech sites for a reason. I personally have absolutely 0 problems with mine and I had it since launch day. It is an excellent and well made piece of hardware. Just got a dock for it today as well but haven't tried it yet.

I'm another person with no issues. Plus some of the complaints are expecting perfection. I'm not saying all, but some of them are.

For such a small run, there do seem to be a good number issues. Granted, XDA is not the entire Transformer user base, but since the number of these tablets sold is relatively small, I think it's a good representation. So far I've only gotten the Sleep of Death problem, whose solution is almost as bad to me as the problem.
Your chances of receiving a good unit seem to be high though, so I say go for it. Every device has its share of lemons.

No dirt here slight light bleed if you look for it but you have to be in complete dark to notice,this is my first tablet and its already changed the way I browse'and network 150% happy, just want a leedroid rom for it.

Yeah, I'll definitely still end up getting one. I think I'll wait till they are more widely available though. G-tablet is doing fine and I don't need one, need one right now. Haha, the Transformer looks like an amazing device but the biggest reason for me to have one is just so I can say I "have one." I say that now but as I soon as I see one pop up "in-stock" I probably can't resist buying.

My son received his last Friday and hasn't had any problems.

I posted about a slight gap on the left side of my screen, but mainly just to see if it's a common thing. I've seen no ill effect from it, including no dust under the screen (which would be my only concern).
I also have a Xoom that I'll be returning soon, and while it's perhaps build a little more solidly (and then again, it's also a simpler design) it's nowhere near as nice as the TF. The TF screen is SO much better, and the keyboard dock is looking SO cool, and the price at $399 is SO nice, that I'll take some glitches here and there.

Another owner with 0 issues. Having never used a touch-screen phone or tablet beyond 10 minutes in the Apple store with the ipad (shhh, don't tell anyone, they would lose respect for me) I was pleasantly surprised with my Transformer. As a developer of 10+ years, I really, really like Honeycomb and find it to be very easy to use.
I have no dust, no dead pixels, no charging issues, no on/off issues, nothing. I'm actually ashamed to admit that my time on my normal, custom-built, water-cooled 4.6Ghz Core i5 2500K, Radeon 5870 rig has gone down sharply. I spend ALL my free time on my fast computer and I can't stand slow machines (like my work laptop). No device before this could break the relationship I have with my computer (PS3, Wii, Xbox, even my 1-year old Asus gaming laptop).
For reference, I'm still on the stock/original build of Honeycomb, 0 updates. The only cons I have are with HC itself and are small. The biggest con I can come up with is the 720p main/high profile playback issues of video files (mp4, mkv specifically). Sure, they play fine after a baseline re-encode that doubles their file size, but that's not acceptable IMO. I'm not convinced it's a hardware issue just yet and will only believe it once we hear it directly from Asus or nVidia.
I may need to track down another if my wife keeps hogging the Transformer.

I have no problem with my transformer =)
The transformer isn't perfect, there is going to be issue, some are isolated while others are widespread but I can say it's the best honeycomb tablet out so far for the price vs quality.

Just got mine today, had it for about an hour so far. The first time I turned it on after signing in to my google account it was SUPER LAGGY. But I then realized this was due to it installing 20 of my apps, and having the homescreens filled. It hastened up afterwards.
I don't like that it lags when you fill up the homescreens, but its no laggier than any other android.
The screen is gorgeous and i have no problems with it, while the hardware doesn't feel like an iPad but its also cheaper!
I got it for the keyboard and I'm still waiting. The way I see it is I'm gonna pay $50 more than an iPad but get a tablet with a better screen, better battery life and a fully functioning keyboard.
If you're expecting iPad build quality you will be let down, but the build quality is not BAD.
I also found some other software issues such as i'll click a button or a link and it will take me to something entirely different... then i'll hit back and click it again and it will work... quirky but not a huge deal...
I'm hoping that software updates will make it even better, but it currently fulfills my need for a cheap, light, laptop (once i get the keyboard) that runs android

Poor Transformer quality ? Poll

Hi guys
I wanted to touch a - in my opinion - important problem. It is the quality of our Transformers.
I always respected Asus due to their high quality products. Unfortunately my transformer had some problems.
First thing is after 3 days of using it I saw a dust under the screen. How did it end? I had to send it to service center.
The second thing was creaking - it started after 2 months of using. I thought that high end product such as Asus (a respected and experienced company) will be high quality. Well I was so mistaken.
I love Transformer but this was to much for me. So I sold it. I did it because of three reasons. One - TF Prime is coming so it is last chance to sell it with good price. Two - I was mad because of poor quality. Three - I have Ipad2 so I will not be lonely.
So this is my history. The problem is I WANT TF Prime ASAP. But am concerned about its quality. I hope Asus will not let me down... again...
Please vote in my poll and write me your feelings about quality of your Transformers.
PS - I wanted to start this discussion because I have heard few bad opinions about transformers.

Hello, good luck to you whatever you get, after owning a scroll 7inch and a hannspad, i think this is the ultimate tablet, games for it is awesome, fast web browsing, films through web, brilliant batt life, so far my tf has been perfect, and thats even with me being unable to root, just think when it gets routed, it'll be ultimate, last week i was going to a meeting, i put mickey mouse choo choo express on it, my 3 boys satand watched it for 45 mins then me oldest boy played angry birds, it made my wifes job easier lol, its sad that you had a bad experience, but my own experience has been amazing so far.

the AC adapter is poor quality

Agreed with the loose booty AC adapter.

This is the case for me also, but it doesn't annoy me as much when I first got it. I have it in a folio case and it is unnoticeable.

As much as I like my TF and Dock. The dock had to go back 2 times for repair.
1st was for the hardware update for powersave, the 2nd - they must have hit the charge switch when they had it for serivce the first time.
I bought them both on Sept 24 and have had the dock in my hands for just 4 days.
It is on the way back to me now.
I had similar problems with my first Eeepc.
If I did not want just what the TF and dock were - I would not have sent the dock in the first time - I would have just returned it for money back.
I only reccomend the TF to someone like me, that wants the great pluses of the TF and dock.
If someone asks me about an android tablet and does not want the hastle of maybe returns for repair on a new product - I suggest the Tab or an (ew) iPad - The iPad itself looks and works great but I am not keen on Apple.

I've had my Tf since July and haven't had any major problems with the unit itself (other than minor light bleed and creaky bezel which doesn't bother me) and I just got the dock a few weeks ago and haven't had any problems with it either. I have had the charger die on my twice though since I bought the tablet. IMO the TF Prime will probably be a lot better quality than the TF101 was because it was Asus' first foray into making tablets. Hopefully they have seen the error of their ways and have taken actions to make it better.

The little creeking doesn't bother me too much. But I had to return my first unit because the volume button broke. The power and volume buttons feel flimsy and I try to use them as little as possible for fear one might break again.
I use audio manager to adjust the volume and plug the charger in in the AM to turn it on. Though the power button is my only option for turning my FT off.
Just wanted to add that I still love my transformer and think it's a great device.

keyboard
Plenty of things are suboptimal about the Transformer but the one that annoys me the most is the keyboard lag.

Maybe it's an inadvertent mission of mine to post in every "My Transformer is CRAP!" thread, but I've been in love with the Asus Transformer from the time I started playing with a Viewsonic gTablet all the way up to the current moment, where I have a rootable B7O-serial TF101-A1 along with the dock.
I even got mine as an open box deal because someone had returned it to newegg (the tablet itself, I got the dock separately from amazon). Even a tablet someone returned was perfect for me. Sorry you're having a bad time of it, but I really think the majority of the TF101s are in great shape. People who have problems are far more vocal than people who have experienced just what they expected from a good product.
There isn't anything notable about getting a well-built item for around $400, but if you spend $400 and you get something that has issues, you have all the reason in the world to be vocal about it. If you count the number of threads complaining about poor quality or serious issues, then compare it to the number of Transformers that have been sold, I'd venture to guess that you would make the determination that it really is a fine product.

No we just talk about hardware problems not software.

Hardware wise I've had no problems but in checking these forums fairly regularly, I am doubtful about ASUS's quality control for this device. Perhaps because they started to sell like Tablet Hot Cakes? Hehe.

How do you work out that 1/3 of "us" have had problems?
Is that 1/3 of 10 posts here?
Or 1/3 of at least a million of these out in use at the moment..
I have a feeling your figuring might be a little skewed due to its narrow demographics of using xda as
your platform
Try googling how many have been sold.. Verses how many threads there are of complaints..
Granted there is a few out there but in the 10mins i just spent doing it..
There is no way there is 300,000 people out there with screwed tranny's...

Here's My Two Cents
I love this thing. I have been an avid member here on XDA for several years now, and I never feel the need to chime in my opinion on the quality of the device I bought. This is mainly because I research the hell out of anything expensive I am going to purchase. This was no different. That being said...
I have had my Transformer for only a short while, but this thing has MORE than exceeded my expectations. It is just as light and thin as the ipad, WAY more customizable, and wasn't too expensive for what I actually got.
I have the 32Gb B70 pad, and I run the Revolver Rom on it. I have some of the coolest widgets and apps on this machine too. I kinda wish I could make my pc as much eye candy as my pad. It is fast and extremely responsive, so the hardware must be pretty good based on that alone. Software is only as good as it's hardware capabilities will allow. As far as the buttons, mine are fine, and seem no weaker than the ones on my HTC Evo 4g. I think some people are too hard on mechanical things. Ever been to the gas pump and not get it to register when you press a button? Couldn't you tell that it was mostly because too many people have pressed WAY to hard on the buttons? As far as the charger, I am not a fan of the style they chose, should have just used the micro-usb style since those are easy to get a hold of, and are cheap.
My battery is good, granted only time will tell, but hey batteries die, by the time it becomes a problem, I will probably be ready to upgrade my toy anyway.
I give my Transformer an A+

Transformer Quality
My son has the transformer and loves it. There have been no issues at all. The biggest downside that i can see is their customer service and the warranty. If for some reason you damage the table yourself, (CID) it voids the entire warranty for future use. In other words if you were to crack your screen and send it back to ASUS for repair, and down the road you have an issue with something else (besides the power cord) you are no longer covered. So beware!!

I am about to buy a Transformer Infinity. I know why I WANT to buy it, but I thought I'll Ask some owners for reasons for why I would NOT want to buy it
I am a crazy customizer and a power user always trying to push the limits.
I currently own a Optimus Black, a phone no one (even LG) cares about...
How popular is the TF700? Will I get support? Roms? What about ASUS Custoomer service?

The Infinity is still relatively new, but there is already quite a bit of development going on with it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1665
As far as official support, such as bug fixes or updates, Asus generally seems to be better and at least faster to get updates out than other manufacturers.
Customer support, however, is a different matter. I haven't dealt with Asus support directly, but there are ample reports about it's horrible quality. For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1830473&highlight=asus+support
Likewise, Asus' quality control is pretty lax. There are a lot of tablets with issues that never should have passed standard QA checks.
Another related note: they also seem to be selling rebranded TF201 docks as "new" TF700 docks: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810592&highlight=tf700+dock
All things considered though, I'm happy with the Infinity overall. I will accompany that with the caveat that I am in fact getting a replacement for my Infinity and dock from Amazon due to some dust under my screen in a very annoying location (right in the center) and because some keys on the dock started registering incorrectly.

Its a good tablet, but its not without its flaws. I'd still pick one up, as Asus is very good about software updates and our dev community is starting to ramp up so we'll get our custom roms.
Some issues that people have had:
-Quality control is very hit or miss
-You're going to have light bleed. Most tablets have it light enough that its only noticeable while booting though, once in Android it goes away.
-Internal flash storage is relatively slow, causing some occasional performance hiccups. If the Prime is any indication, custom roms will easily work around the issue.
-Asus's tech support staff are complete crap that'll insist on RMAing your device even for the most trivial issues.
-Some devices wont receive updates or unlock their bootloader, although in most cases both start working after a few weeks.
Just make sure you get one that's physically well built, and you should like it.

My advice...
If possible wait before buying.
Don't jump in like I did.
I did get a later non buggy Infinity that has no build problems.
The performance of the tablet is what I would say is stellar compared to most of the previous incarnations.
Yet there is competition on the horizon that just might blow the Infinity out of the water.
I ran out and bought the Acer A700 because it was the latest thing and ended up severely disappointed.
So then I jumped over to the Infinity and have been pleased.
If you are a true blue power user\tinkerer the Asus may be good, yet you may be much happier with a later model
10 inch tab that ships with android 4.1 jellybean.
I'll bet the hardware in the upcoming tabs will give the 'ole iPad a real run for the finish line.
As far as the this or that choice...to me it boils down to an OS preference.
I wouldn't make sense for anyone on here to recommend apple over droid.
Probably best to not even bring it up...

I have a Asus Prime currently in limbo between Asus and FEDEX for about a month now trying to get it replaced. Long story short. Prime broke (poor quality), sent it to texas service center. 1/2 week later got it back. Service center screwed up the packing, FEDEX destroyed my tablet on delivery. Submitted and claim, 30 days later still waiting. Got tired of waiting, bought the infinity.
Asus seems to have learned their lessons from the Prime, so for me the Infinity works like what I expected the prime to be. Flawless.
If you're into customization and tinkering then this is the tablet for you. The only negative I have to say is Asus as a company they are very schizophrenic. They seem to have good customer support, their response time is good, they are polite and they want to do right by the customer but the end result is unsatisfactory. The Prime should have been recalled, but instead they released band aids to problems that only made things worst. But they tried to do good for the customer. Which is why I ended up buying another Asus product. I just hope I don't come to regret my decision later on.
There's not that many options right now anyways, if you want the most powerful tablet released you either get the ipad 3 or the infinity. My vote is on the infinity, just make sure you get insurance.

Also is there a considerable drop in Performance in the 3G version compared to the Wifi version?

Yes its very sensitive. The digitizer on the Infinity is really good. Regarding the HandStylus, I don't see why it shouldn't work. It looks like a normal capacitive stylus with just a smaller tip. As far as the 3g version I don't believe its out on the market yet.

I use my Infinity for quite a bit of work. One thing I found is that I use the device docked with the keyboard more than I do as an actual tablet. When sitting at a table or even on the couch I'm able to bang out e-mail, XLS files or word docs with little or no effort. Even when not using the keyboard, just having it there gives a very stable stand to hold the device in a comfortable position. I'm not even considering a sleeve anymore to protect the device, since just folding the keyboard up will protect the screen. Honestly, I didn't think I would use it this way... figured they dock was going to be a novelty accessory. It has truly transformed (pun intended) this thing into something that is really productive. Not sure what kind of school work you will be using your tablet for, but this is something you might want to consider.

I own one and I think it's great.. I honestly can't think of a reason why you shouldn't get it.. In addition, there are plenty of stable OS that you can put on the tablet once you root it; plus, you have more options you can enact on the tablet, which wouldn't be possible on the iPad.

I second Garys opinion. My transformer has become my sole computing device at home, with my desktop being used as a file storage.
The keyboard dock is essential for school.

FWIW, I finally bought a gray Infinity after being without my OG Transformer since last AUG and tiring of the wait for a champagne unit. (Tried a Prime for about 36 hours -- it was such a POS that I returned it for a refund.) The gray Infinity has been in production long enough to work out assembly issues, if Asus plans to correct them at all.
I bought from Amazon, which has excellent customer service and return policies. I should receive the unit today. If there are build issues, I'll exchange no more than twice (which, not coincidentally, is the limit of Amazon's exchange policy). If I can't find a good unit among three, I'll just return it and wait for the Samsung P10 or a Surface tab.
Heck, if the P10 is as killer as specs suggest, I'll probably eBay the Infinity anyway. But I've done without a tablet for so long -- and the keyboard dock for my Droid Bionic is a poor substitute -- that I gotta try something.

If you want to be conformed to a cookie cutter device, and have a dictatorial company tell you what you want, need, and desire
While controlling you with an iron fist, by all means, get iPad 3.
If you are your own unique person who can decide what you want on your own, I strongly suggest a lil green robot.

I first tried the tf300 because it has the jb update but went to the infinity for its display. Once it gets jb you won't see lag any longer with it. I also tried the new ipad but returned it quickly, ios just too boring for me.

Sold my galaxy note 10.1 for buying infinty

I sold my galaxy note 10.1 for buying the infinity. It wasnt any problems with the note. I read alot, and i find the resolution is a major let down for me. The screen have a superb quality on images, but on text its not quite good as a high resolution screen.
Ive followed a bit on this forum. Seems like this pad got so many problems. Are you satisfied with your infinty? Should I wait for the next pad?

I would wait now after I know better..
Probably would wait that Samsung brings some high res non plastic out. Asus has lost my confidence in them

I love it.
I bought mine 5 weeks ago and have no regrets. I use it every day. Even though there are some problems, they aren't show-stoppers. The Infinity is, in my book, still the best tablet. The issues will be ironed out - if not by Asus, then by our own developers. If you're OCD and your tablet has to be perfect, keep looking... check back in the next month or two and see how the TF700 is with Jelly Bean. I'm enjoying the heck out of mine and love knowing that it'll only get better and better. Just my 2 cents.

You get a FHD screen and dock. You also get less stability and some questionable design choices with the terrible ssd nand and below average battery life due to the tegra 3 and fhd screen. Apple had the sense to use a better dedicated gpu and almost double the battery size for the fhd screen.
The tf700 does a lot of things fine but it has been a trial in patience. My tf300 had much better performance. The tf700 should've had an upgraded gpu, battery, and sad. It got none if these things. They seemed to spend all their time fixing the mistakes of the prime and did not anticipate issues with introducing a fhd screen.

I chose the Infinity over the Note for the same reason, the FHD and the fact I read a lot. I am satisfied with it. You're in a good position now to decide this for yourself since the issues are mostly known already. I've not had quality issues, so far, but performance is lower than that of the Note. Would I still buy it again today? Yes, I think so. I upgraded from a Nook Color (on CM7) and since getting the Infinity I've been spending a ton of hours on it and enjoy it so much that I can't see myself returning it and just waiting (or going with lower res). If you have another tablet you're OK with as a stop gap then maybe wait, if not then go for it and enjoy it. In 2 years time we're likely to upgrade anyway and it's not like it's a pain to use now, it's just not as perfect as one would hope from a flagship product.
Another option is to wait for JB and decide then, that is if you feel you can't stomach the current reported performance / stability issues (which I seldom come across personally).

Go for it! Don't worry about the reports of the "horrible SSD", etc - the tablet runs fine... Some people put way too much stock in benchmark results.
The majority of users don't have 2gb files downloading in the background while trying to do other work, so the "SSD slowness" isn't even noticeable for most people.
Jelly Bean is supposed to be released very soon as well, so that should also boost performance. I have a Nexus 7, which is also manufactured by Asus (with the same "horrible" SSD) and it runs beautifully. I expect the TF700 performance to be similar to the Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean...
I would, however, recommend buying at a local retailer if possible - Asus quality control has been really bad on the TF700, so there is a chance that you may need to exchange it once or twice before getting a "good" one...
Besides, if you find you don't like it, you can always return it....

Feel the same way, Infinity might be Aluminum but it's made so terribly with the separating glass and cheap internal memory that is believed to be the reason this, otherwise great tablet, has i/o issues.

Just get it! The more you read the more you let others control your thinking and provides the haters sway your thinking. Unless that's what your looking for, its a great tablet. I love the keyboard combo and battery life is superb for someone that watches movies and shows daily. FULL HD is a must! Super IPS+ can't be beat. I rarely have to charge my tablet either. Now that Jelly Bean is confirmed, its even more appealing now then ever. Just go for it. Buy it at Best Buy so you'll have 30 days to decide.

I'm not a hater, I'm just saying the Infinity could be better than it is and I think it's worth waiting for something else. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the tab especially now with browser2ram but it's definitely got a LOT of issues.
The biggest annoyance is that I have to restart the tab almost daily if I want to play Dead Trigger, also Asus left out the drivers for the PS3 controller so you NEED to root if you want to use one over bluetooth as opposed to every other ics device. The battery should have been bigger, I've drained it in sub 4 hours before from 100 to 3% playing Jelly Defense. Granted, that's a lot of Jelly Defense but it should last longer than that. The i/o issues is the biggest thing, browsing on this tab with Chrome is unbearable at best. Two things make it a lot better to browse on, Dolphin Pad beta and the browser2ram apk although the latter of which only works with the default browser.
Again, I don't hate the Infinity and I enjoy using it everyday but it cost a good amount of money and it's frustrating that Asus cut corners and it shows. Asus customer service also seems like it leaves a lot to be desired.

Somehow i feel like I shouldn't sell my note. It has absolute no problems. no lag, no hickups, no force close, fast browser, a very good pen, it made of plastic but feels very solid, i accidental dropped it once and it got no scratches, no damages where made. Man i wish samsung made a tablet with hd+ screen.
Btw, I bought the infinity over internet, the store got 45 days with full right to return if you are not satisfied. Finger cross that this tablet wont make any problem for me.

Re: Some of the points brought up here.
Battery life: From my perspective, this thing has fantastic battery life. I manage my resources pretty well, though. With the dock, it goes into unprecedented territory, I can use the system all day long on a full dock+tab charge.
Usage: If your primary application is reading, I don't think you're going to see many problems in the way of stability and you will find the screen wonderful and highly usable.
Stability: This is a tough one. If you want something that is super stable without any maintenance/tweaking/learning, yes, look elsewhere. My system as I have configured it only really has frequent problems with 3D games and that is due to a kernel graphics driver bug that has a fix coming out with the next OS update (so I am hopeful this one last issue will be fixed). Using this tab as a daily driver, I do not really have any major issues at this point, it's as stable and usable as any other android device I have owned except for the gaming problem.
Storage: The slow RAM everyone is complaining about here is nand flash that functions like a virtual hard disk. The actual system memory is perfectly functional dynamic RAM. The end result of this is that sometimes, this slow "disk" will act as a bottleneck and make the entire tab slow down. Honestly, the only time I see much of this is when running benchmarks, LOL. My ADHD is not so bad that I want to throw the tablet against a wall if there is a 300 millisecond pause when performing some operation. So, yeah, I DO think this is a weakness and a poor design choice by ASUS' engineers but in practice it is rarely a real world issue for me.
QA: Some folks have had some legitimately serious issues but I think a huge majority of the stuff that is cited here could have been mitigated by buying at a brick and mortar store with a decent return policy. I have not seen any hardware defect on the tablets I have owned that could not be indentified and exchanged within a 24 hour period. On a forum where people are coming to look for help, you're going to hear the horror stories so while I feel sorry for these folks I do not think some of these issues are super high frequency.
If you don't have that kind of safety net available in your purchasing situation, then, yes, I would be concerned about physical defects in a TF tab and would recommend avoiding one. But if you are able to buy it at a decent place like Best Buy, etc, you will find a good one and you will not get burned by this with the caveat that you may have to be patient enough to evaluate/inspect and return one.
Bottom Line: It's a great tab, the dock is amazing, the screen is glorious, the CPU is ridiculously fast. It has some minor stability issues that require a bit of learning configuring tweaking. It has slow I/O that can sometimes unnecessarily throttle the CPU, so if you are going to download torrents or surf high bandwidth adult web sites it may not be for you LOL . Since ASUS QA has been weak I would also only recommend purchasing in a situation where an exchange can be handled easily.
FWIW, there's no tab out right now I would trade it for.

That's good your not a hater. Honestly every tablet you will come across will have issues. NOTE, IPADS, TRANSFORMERS. I can also sit here and advise others to wait for the next best thing but that kind of mentality will just prevent you from enjoying the now. The now is the Infinity.

I also just returned my Note 10.1 for the Infinity. I really liked the Note for the s-pen and all, but I quickly found that i never used it for what it was for. For me the tablet is a consumption device and to be used as a mobile solution for my online classes. The Infinity does this very well, and the screen resolution is more noticeable than i expected.
So far very happy with the Infinity.

I'm aware you could sit and always be waiting for the next best thing and that thing will never come. I just think, now knowing Asus cheaped out, it's worth waiting for something else. Maybe Jelly Bean will fix a lot of the issues I have with this thing and my opinion will change, not sure. I hope it does
Having said all of that, the screen does kick an insurmountable amount of ass. It's just downright gorgeous.

I had Galaxy note for 3 weeks and returned it for Infinity. I had infinity before note... and essentially came back because of screen resolution.
If you can wait, you should wait. Simply as others said, longer you wait better system always show up. That's the world of technology. But I doubt nothing that replace Infinity in next a few months for following reasons:
1. Samsung - Just released Note. If they release the higher resolution tablet or even announce about higher resolution tablet within next couple months, that is horrible thing as they will lose its own sales from Note and upset consumer who purchased one. Not only Note, but also they have Windows 8 tablet coming in end of October with high resolution screen but price tag of $1100+. So again, I don't think they want to compete with that either.
2. ASUS - Similar story. They just released infinity and probably purposely made upcoming Windows 8 tablet HD screen rather than FHD, so they won't compete with Infinity. And therefore, again highly doubtful they will be releasing anything new that is complete superior to the infinity within next few months.
Other vendors are similar like Sony and Acer just released their tablets as well.
The uncertain zone is Windows tablet from other vendors; however, among the currently announced windows tablet including from ASUS, Samsung, Acer, Dell, Microsoft (I may be missing some), there is only one with Full HD, which is Samsung's Ativ Smart Pro but this model again costs $1100 but its battery life is 5 hours of DVD play. So to me this proves that most likely all Full HD windows tablet that is coming in near future will be around the same price and likely with poor battery life for a while.
So yeah, basically if you are looking for full HD tablet you won't have much choice for next a few months. But I am sure by the time next iPad rumor start to arise, you see more Android tablet.
*I excluded Kindle HD here, because I simply don't think they are in same class but if you think they are your option, that's another option.
As for my experience, Infinity is much more stable than before for me and the only reason I initially gave up on infinity was too frequent ANR, and too slow browser loading time. Both of which I got it fixed (well ANR is probably not what I did but by firmware). So yes. this is indeed my ideal tablet at the moment.

I just bought my infinity a couple of days ago and I can't be happier. I use it for some ebooks, as I'm a Dr. of Physical Therapy student and the ebooks are MUCH cheaper.
I haven't used the Note, but what sold me on the infinity is how it essentially works like a "netbook" and it has actually replaced my netbook. I only wish there was a better microsoft office app, the app that came pre-loaded isn't the best, but it works.

When yuo say you rarely have to charge it, how often is that?
After using mine for reading comics, a few podcasts and tv, web browsing, i find I'm getting 3.5/ 4 hous which is pretty ****.

I currently have a Motorola Xoom and was thinking of selling it off and upgrading to a transformer infinity.
Looking around this seems to currently be the best android tablet and I love the idea of the dock keyboard. I have a keyboard for my Xoom but it means I have to prop the xoom up on something to be able to use it lol!
The infinity looks like a very impressive piece of kit, but I am just wondering what people's views are?
I am quite attached to my old Xoom, even though it's not the prettiest or lightest tablet around it's been worth its weight in gold and has worked with everything I have thrown at it and he battery life has also been very good. I've got my old Xoom rooted and running Jelly bean so I was wondering if the infinity was also a good solid device?
The only thing that I find annoying with my xoom is it's weight... its like carrying a brick sometimes and it's a little to heavy to hold with one hand

if you just read around the forum here, you will find all the information you need to make your decision.
as for what i think, i really like it. the new JB update has make it run a lot smoother and the dock works wonderfully. only thing i would see that would hold you back would be the build. not quality per say (although it does seem to be an issue for some) but the fact that the xoom is built like a brick. after going from such a sturdy tablet, any and all other tablets feel pretty flimsy so that will be something you need to judge for yourself.

I had xoom at one point, and felt heavy as well. Despite the difference is only ~200g, it is significant enough to notice. In any event, Infinity is indeed for me the best tablet available at the moment. Just make sure to get it from a place where you can potentially exchange as unfortunately quality control issue exist with ASUS.

For the reasons you listed - possibly yes. However take into account that while it might be the " best android tablet", it suffers from i/o issues and the last time I had so much stuttering and response lag was when I had a Motorola defy running 2.1... and this is supposed to be the top end tablet with JB.

I just bought one (literally, today), and I'm already regretting it. I simply can't live with the stuttering and choppyness of the browsers this thing provides. It's terrible. Probably returning mine to the store.

Now that has put me off! Quite shocked to hear that, is that a common problem?
I was looking forward to getting a lighter tablet, the bulkiness and thickness of the Xoom is starting to get to me... It feels like an armoured tank! lol
I wonder if there is still stuttering and choppyness with custom ROMS? I guess I'll have to have a ready through these boards to find out some more before I decide.

Is it possible to get one locally close to home?
Maybe you can buy it try it.
My Infinity has been pretty much a good experience.
I'm not a nit-picker though.
Some folks have gotten some real nasty disappointing units.
There's plenty of good along with bad if you search these forum pages.
Check the Newegg and Amazon reviews for a little more input.

Who knows what that guy has going but most people are quite satisfied with browser experience. Especially now that Project butter is running for the Infinity. Just go to test drive it for yourself. Then you will know the answer to what your looking for.

I see this posted a lot and it's true with most browsers. That said I run opera and get smooth performance with it. I used it on my xoom when everyone complained about stuttering with the same result. when I used my xoom exclusively we had pretty much the same complaints. Unfortunately the opera team has yet to scale the url bar up to the infinity resolution yet so the text is tiny.

I was starting to miss my Xoom (i gave it to my father) about 3 weeks after i got the infinity. All the bugs and lag were getting on my nerves. But with the two recent updates, things have gotten better.

It's not all bad. It's got a cool design, it's light, sturdy.. got some powerful specs running under the hood, seems to be able to handle heating well, great camera, the best screen ever etc.. BUT - as great as those features are, I just can't get over how non responsive everything is. Any website I try to open on the default browser takes 3-4 secs to respond, some sites cause the browser to ANR, or it would appear to be displaying a site smoothly and then it freezes for a couple of seconds while you're trying to scroll; or switching between apps with the task manager, sometimes it's smooth as butter like on my S3, sometimes you can see how much it struggles; even going over the different settings menus makes it stutter. Not to mention the delay you get trying to flip the tablet from vertical to landscape..... it really bothers me.
I'm going to see if I can get a replacement and try out a different unit, maybe mine came from a bad batch at the factory, who knows. Maybe it actually runs smooth and consistently so for other people and what I'm experiencing is a faulty model. But if these issues are common then I would advise to stay away from the tf700 until Asus has it fixed (or sadly abandons it and retries with a new tablet).

To be honest with you, I don't think exchanging for another unit will give you a better experience. What you have described is pretty much the standard performance of the TF700. The fact is that Tegra 3 is not capable of driving a full HD screen (we are still stuck with single-channel memory in 2012!!!) and thus the stuttering. The poor I/O also makes things worse. Even the JB update cannot really make the browser free from ANR, and simple tasks such as downloading files in the background will make your tf700 unresponsive. If you want full HD screens, stay far away from Tegra 3. Snapdragon S4 Pro is the way to go.

Sounds like a mixed bag then, I think I shall have to try one out first for sure...just have to find somewhere selling one locally, or maybe order one on line and try it out for a few days, if it doesn't work out I could always send it back.
I just love the design with the attachable keyboard, and I am really looking for something a lot lighter than my Xoom. I did originally look at the Transformer Prime, and then I heard about the infinity.
I am sure the Infinity is great device, the Xoom also has a bad reputation but I have had no problems with it whatsoever.
I think a shopping trip is due today to see if I can find an Infinity in stores =)

The stock browser is bugged. That's common knowledge. Other browsers work just fine without hanging. One program having an issue is not the fault of the tablet if the rest works fine.
As for the ANr. Usually you (used to) get them when an app takes a while to load. Most of those times, it works again when you get the popup. Since JB I have only had one App Not Responding error, and that was a Live Wallpaper which Playstore listed as incompatible. That was my own fault, not the Tf's.
I've not had a single speed or performance issue. Nothing lags, everything runs fast. There are some very unlucky people here, and some very lucky ones.
The only negative I've found is that developers (not the guys here) are so obsessed with the SGS3 that there's hardly anything to be found for the Tegra 3 and the massive resolution of the TF700.

I must disagree with your point about ANR. It is true that the apps will usually work again after those pop-ups, but those ANR messages should not be there in the first place. They are annoying and make me less confident about my tablet's reliability. To be 100% honest, the Infinity is the most crash-prone Android devices I have ever used. You might not believe me, but my Sensation on ICS is a lot more stable than the Infinity, and less lags at well.
For the lack of development, I guess it is expected, given the high price tag of the Infinity and the fact that it is not a popular model.

The stock browser is bugged. That's common knowledge. Other browsers work just fine without hanging. One program having an issue is not the fault of the tablet if the rest works fine.
As for the ANr. Usually you (used to) get them when an app takes a while to load. Most of those times, it works again when you get the popup. Since JB I have only had one App Not Responding error, and that was a Live Wallpaper which Playstore listed as incompatible. That was my own fault, not the Tf's.
I've not had a single speed or performance issue. Nothing lags, everything runs fast. There are some very unlucky people here, and some very lucky ones.
The only negative I've found is that developers (not the guys here) are so obsessed with the SGS3 that there's hardly anything to be found for the Tegra 3 and the massive resolution of the TF700.

Actually, the stock browser is the least buggy for me. Can't use chrome or dolphine because they stutter so much on the tf700.
I'm happy to hear you're experiencing a fast and smooth tablet as it suggests that getting a replacement will solve it.
Either we have different definitions to "lag-free" or Asus's quality control on the tablet is so meh that its smoothness and stability vary wildly from unit to unit.

Well I decided not to go for the infinity in the end, it sure looks good but my with my budget restraints I think it's a little out of my league at the moment
I've opted for the Prime as it was a considerable lot less... at least it's lighter than my Xoom.

I absolutely love my Infinity. ASUS does have quality control issues. Make sure you buy from a vendor that will allow returns if the device is defective. Mine came with a SMALL amount of light bleed, two minor scratches on the back plate, and the screen pops out of the bezel a TINY bit over the camera. These issues are annoying and it took me some time to accept them, but they don't hinder my device's performance. I would definitely recommend purchasing the Infinity, but make sure you get a good one.
