Potential Buyer

I am about to buy a Transformer Infinity. I know why I WANT to buy it, but I thought I'll Ask some owners for reasons for why I would NOT want to buy it
I am a crazy customizer and a power user always trying to push the limits.
I currently own a Optimus Black, a phone no one (even LG) cares about...
How popular is the TF700? Will I get support? Roms? What about ASUS Custoomer service?

The Infinity is still relatively new, but there is already quite a bit of development going on with it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1665
As far as official support, such as bug fixes or updates, Asus generally seems to be better and at least faster to get updates out than other manufacturers.
Customer support, however, is a different matter. I haven't dealt with Asus support directly, but there are ample reports about it's horrible quality. For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1830473&highlight=asus+support
Likewise, Asus' quality control is pretty lax. There are a lot of tablets with issues that never should have passed standard QA checks.
Another related note: they also seem to be selling rebranded TF201 docks as "new" TF700 docks: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810592&highlight=tf700+dock
All things considered though, I'm happy with the Infinity overall. I will accompany that with the caveat that I am in fact getting a replacement for my Infinity and dock from Amazon due to some dust under my screen in a very annoying location (right in the center) and because some keys on the dock started registering incorrectly.

Its a good tablet, but its not without its flaws. I'd still pick one up, as Asus is very good about software updates and our dev community is starting to ramp up so we'll get our custom roms.
Some issues that people have had:
-Quality control is very hit or miss
-You're going to have light bleed. Most tablets have it light enough that its only noticeable while booting though, once in Android it goes away.
-Internal flash storage is relatively slow, causing some occasional performance hiccups. If the Prime is any indication, custom roms will easily work around the issue.
-Asus's tech support staff are complete crap that'll insist on RMAing your device even for the most trivial issues.
-Some devices wont receive updates or unlock their bootloader, although in most cases both start working after a few weeks.
Just make sure you get one that's physically well built, and you should like it.

If possible wait before buying.
Don't jump in like I did.
I did get a later non buggy Infinity that has no build problems.
The performance of the tablet is what I would say is stellar compared to most of the previous incarnations.
Yet there is competition on the horizon that just might blow the Infinity out of the water.
I ran out and bought the Acer A700 because it was the latest thing and ended up severely disappointed.
So then I jumped over to the Infinity and have been pleased.
If you are a true blue power user\tinkerer the Asus may be good, yet you may be much happier with a later model
10 inch tab that ships with android 4.1 jellybean.
I'll bet the hardware in the upcoming tabs will give the 'ole iPad a real run for the finish line.
As far as the this or that choice...to me it boils down to an OS preference.
I wouldn't make sense for anyone on here to recommend apple over droid.
Probably best to not even bring it up...

I have a Asus Prime currently in limbo between Asus and FEDEX for about a month now trying to get it replaced. Long story short. Prime broke (poor quality), sent it to texas service center. 1/2 week later got it back. Service center screwed up the packing, FEDEX destroyed my tablet on delivery. Submitted and claim, 30 days later still waiting. Got tired of waiting, bought the infinity.
Asus seems to have learned their lessons from the Prime, so for me the Infinity works like what I expected the prime to be. Flawless.
If you're into customization and tinkering then this is the tablet for you. The only negative I have to say is Asus as a company they are very schizophrenic. They seem to have good customer support, their response time is good, they are polite and they want to do right by the customer but the end result is unsatisfactory. The Prime should have been recalled, but instead they released band aids to problems that only made things worst. But they tried to do good for the customer. Which is why I ended up buying another Asus product. I just hope I don't come to regret my decision later on.
There's not that many options right now anyways, if you want the most powerful tablet released you either get the ipad 3 or the infinity. My vote is on the infinity, just make sure you get insurance.

I will be using this a lot for school work. Is it sensitive enough for handwriting? Can I use a fine tipped stylus like the HandStylus (http://handstylus.com/) ?
Also is there a considerable drop in Performance in the 3G version compared to the Wifi version?

Yes its very sensitive. The digitizer on the Infinity is really good. Regarding the HandStylus, I don't see why it shouldn't work. It looks like a normal capacitive stylus with just a smaller tip. As far as the 3g version I don't believe its out on the market yet.

I use my Infinity for quite a bit of work. One thing I found is that I use the device docked with the keyboard more than I do as an actual tablet. When sitting at a table or even on the couch I'm able to bang out e-mail, XLS files or word docs with little or no effort. Even when not using the keyboard, just having it there gives a very stable stand to hold the device in a comfortable position. I'm not even considering a sleeve anymore to protect the device, since just folding the keyboard up will protect the screen. Honestly, I didn't think I would use it this way... figured they dock was going to be a novelty accessory. It has truly transformed (pun intended) this thing into something that is really productive. Not sure what kind of school work you will be using your tablet for, but this is something you might want to consider.

I own one and I think it's great.. I honestly can't think of a reason why you shouldn't get it.. In addition, there are plenty of stable OS that you can put on the tablet once you root it; plus, you have more options you can enact on the tablet, which wouldn't be possible on the iPad.

I second Garys opinion. My transformer has become my sole computing device at home, with my desktop being used as a file storage.
The keyboard dock is essential for school.

FWIW, I finally bought a gray Infinity after being without my OG Transformer since last AUG and tiring of the wait for a champagne unit. (Tried a Prime for about 36 hours -- it was such a POS that I returned it for a refund.) The gray Infinity has been in production long enough to work out assembly issues, if Asus plans to correct them at all.
I bought from Amazon, which has excellent customer service and return policies. I should receive the unit today. If there are build issues, I'll exchange no more than twice (which, not coincidentally, is the limit of Amazon's exchange policy). If I can't find a good unit among three, I'll just return it and wait for the Samsung P10 or a Surface tab.
Heck, if the P10 is as killer as specs suggest, I'll probably eBay the Infinity anyway. But I've done without a tablet for so long -- and the keyboard dock for my Droid Bionic is a poor substitute -- that I gotta try something.

If you want to be conformed to a cookie cutter device, and have a dictatorial company tell you what you want, need, and desire
While controlling you with an iron fist, by all means, get iPad 3.
If you are your own unique person who can decide what you want on your own, I strongly suggest a lil green robot.

I first tried the tf300 because it has the jb update but went to the infinity for its display. Once it gets jb you won't see lag any longer with it. I also tried the new ipad but returned it quickly, ios just too boring for me.

Guys now is my time! i have to buy my first tablet ever! i have saved money and i cant upgrade sooner cause i am a student so pls help me sincerely...
i have about $650 (US dollars). i want the best tablet.
i love the flash in android devices for internet, but for the resolution i had in my mind to buy the new ipad but then Jelly bean came and it also does not have flash so i changed the idea of getting the new ipad. because both ios and android now dont have flash, i love android. but i thought to just check ipad cause i have never bought and apple product cause i simple hate apple.
my uses r:
1- using internet. i use a lot of internet on my mobile so i need tablet now.
2- watching movies and videos
3- using camera on mobile but a decent tablet camera would be nice
4-listening music
5- transferring big files
well here are my choices. guys dont be one sided for ur 700 cause no device is perfect! just give me the idea of which to choose between these depending on ur experiences cause many of u guys here would have definitely used more than one tablet.
1- Samsung galaxy note 10.1
2- ipad 3
3- asus transformer pad infinity tf-700
4- asus transformer pad tf-300
5- acer iconia tab A700

Fastest tablet on market, completely plastic case (I hate that), lower res screen than Infinity, S-Pen if you like to draw/take hand written notes.

iOS, Apple, iTunes.. meh

HD screen is amazing, fast tablet but not as fast as Note 10.1. Has a Keyboard dock with extra battery, I type faster than I write so I prefer keyboard over S-Pen. Asus does have some QC issues so test out everything and make sure you're happy within the store return policy window.
4- asus transformer pad tf-300
If HD screen isn't important to you this is a good budget option.
5- acer iconia tab A700
Over-heats, sluggish, HD screen but I wouldn't go for it.
I suggest you go in to a store and play with each one and decide for yourself which you prefer. iPad, T700, Note 10.1 are all good tabs and suit different people's needs. Sony just released their Xperia S tablet with a 9.7" (I think) screen which might also be worth a look at. Or if you believe all the rumours you could wait and see if Samsung release their P10 with HD screen and perhaps Google will release a 10" tab too before Christmas. Oh and then the Windows tabs will be out so you'll have more choice
Tablet shopping is such fun!

Personally, I'd try to hold off on making your decision until Jelly Bean is available for the TF700. If Jelly Bean runs as well as we are all expecting on the TF700, it would be much easier to recommend it over the others.
Right now, with all of the QC issues that Asus has, I have a hard time recommending the TF700 to anyone. I really do like the device (or I would have sold it and bought something else), but some folks have had to return the damn thing 7 or 8 times before getting one without physical defects. I just don't feel comfortable recommending a device with so many defects out-of-the-box. Combine that with the Asus ICS implementation and it's just plain hard to recommend to someone that just wants a working device. I don't mind dealing with the software issues (I actually enjoy "tinkering"), but some users just don't want to be bothered with that stuff and want the thing to work without "tinkering".
Now, if Jelly Bean is implemented properly on the TF700, that I might change my mind on recommending it. While the physical defect rate would still be the same, I just think that it would be more "worth it" to deal with the QC issues if Jelly Bean runs well...
Just my opinion. I really can't comment on the other devices in your list since I don't own them...
My best recommendation would be to go to a retail store (if possible) and just try them out for yourself...

The two replies given cover the base, so I am not inclined to add my measly $0.02 to them.
However, I would like to make a point of requesting a more to-the-point topic title next time, for your own good. Not many people are inclined to go read up on a question with such a generic title -- meaning you will get less replies and hurt your own chances of achieving whatever it is you want to achieve. And XDA is not exactly unique in requesting explicit topic titles, either...

Process of elimination is probably what you have to use as "no tablet is completely superior to other i.e. NO best tablet" in my opinion.
The last two can be eliminated. Acer's tablet has full HD screen but have not received great review and pretty much most reviews puts TF700 over the Acer. TF300 is great budget tablet but if you can afford TF700 is better as it is higher end model.
The other three are tough and really depends on the preference.
1. New IPad ( I have iPad 2 so I am sort of basing on this)
Basically all round player with high resolution display, stability, speed. But it is completely different ecosystem than android. So you have to first decide iOS vs. Android.
2. Galaxy Note 10.1 (I owned it for 3 weeks)
Fastest, most stable android tablet out there. S-pen is closest to the paper the tablet can get. But lacks full HD, which I found out really important for me.
3. TF700
Full HD. When its functioning as fast as Galaxy Note. But slightly more frequent random browser crash. (which by the way I get it with Note and Ipad 2 as well, just a less frequent). But overall I chose TF700 as difference in stability and speed were not as significant as full HD (personally).
As someone else suggested, if you can wait until jellybean on TF700, it is probably the safest to wait until then as if it makes TF700 faster and more stable (particularly browsing), I can say it is hands down the best tablet at that point.

Ok I'll answer because you have so adamantly begged for a reply.
I had an Acer A700 don't go there you can cook dinner on that thing.
We have an iPad 3 it's wonderful device, it's not for those who love to tinker and adjust.
The Asus TF700T is my personal favorite because I'm big fan of the Android OS.

XDA is an Android board so you may not get too many recommendations for an iDevice here.

Well if you can handle iOs and itunes then I would say go to ipad. It is very good and quick.
Just not for me. I also have ipad but bought infinity. I just hate the software too much to use it. But hardware wise it is a well made nice device.

Quality Control issues are a constant for EVERY MANUFACTURER. With some having more and other manufacturers having less. I've owned Sony and Panasonic products that had horrible QC issues. Yet their products were still highly touted and rated the best in their respective markets, for that particular product. People come to product forums, more times than not, to vent their frustration about a product. Rarely do you see people come to tell you how amazing their device is...
For every negative review, on average, theirs 11 people ecstatic with their Infinity. If you go to Amazon 's review Site for the Infinity - over 250 people reviewed their device 4 stars or higher. With 50 people reviewing it 3 stars or less.

The Asus Infinity tablet is the flagship device all other manufacturers will try to emulate. I'm very happy with mine. Best electronic purchase in 4 years. And we're still waiting for Jelly Bean!

I would say that even putting the iDevice on the list means a person actually wants one.

I guess you just have to do what we all have done:
1) do your research. Read published reviews, product reviews on retailers' sites and learn everything you can about the potential products and then;
2) choose one. Try to choose one that you could return or sell more easily if you don't like it, so you won't lose too much money.
No one can know what is best for you, what works best in your environment...You can see that even with the same product, there is a diversity of opinion about how good it is.
You just have to take the plunge and make a choice.

Jelly Bean
The TF700 is supposed to have jelly bean in early October. I got this from Asus support and posted this earlier.

tf700t would definitely be my best bet. it is just better than everything out there. Alot of people on this forum complain about this tablet on very specific issues that are caused by rooting or unlocking. if you have only school uses for it you dont have to do either of them. tf700t takes surprisingly awesome pictures. video playback is beautiful. writing essays is ridiculously amazing with the keyboard. battery life lasts me all day. its a beautiful machine. GET IT!.

Strictly opinion/a suggestion (Not to be taken as the ultimate elitist truth)
Personally, a person that's owned a HP TouchPad, a Transformer Prime, and a current owner of both the Transformer Infinity and iPad (New iPad, 3rd gen.. whatever you want to call it... stupid Apple naming scheme), I would recommend the new iPad. And I mean that wholeheartedly if you're intention is to actually buy a tablet, and not an oversized phone without the phone or portable web browser/e-reader.
Ultimately, I think what's important is support and just look at all the mindless iSheep out there. It's just incredible. Android ICS was touted as the first iteration of Android optimized for tablets... yet the apps are still mainly for phones. The developers are brainwashed by the Apple brand and it is what it is.
You can go for an Android tablet but the "better specs" can only go so far... or if you ask me aren't even frickin enough! I bought the Transformer Prime thinking I was buying the best Android tablet in the market and was so underwhelmed and disappointed. Browsing was sluggish. Touch isn't as responsive as you'd hope most times (which is why Jelly Bean is still promising that the 'buttery smooth' experience...how many more versions until they get it down right instead of just settling?)... and most of the apps available are still optimized for phones not tablets. As an Android owner, I lust for updates hoping the experience feels better/snappier/ less FRIGGIN forced closes! As an iPad/iPod touch owner, I get excited about updates for new features. They've already got the experience down to a T.
With the new iPad you've got a screen that's better than the Transformer Infinity without the damn quality control issues. If you ever have a problem with it, if there's an Apple Store within your vicinity and your product is still under warranty, expect a pleasant turnaround time for troubleshooting and repair. With ASUS, you'll be paying out of pocket to get it shipped to them, and expect at least a 2 week wait.
Dev support makes it pretty much the Windows of the tablet universe. Ironically, it's actually iOS that makes Android look like OSX in that regard but most often with the quality of Linux software. You'll find some of the same apps on Android that's on iOS but they're either just as good or mostly worse or a still phone app that gets blown up on your tablet. So much for that big screen with the full HD res, huh?
Even with jailbreaking and rooting... the iOS jailbreaking community is more active. Cydia's updated everyday. With Android it's an easter egg hunt. God forbid you ask someone in a forum for stuff. You're often subjected to trolling... how about the classic "do a Google search!" It's the same with iOS too but since the community there is larger you're bound to get answers easier.
Does the mlb at-bat stream HD live games on Android? Last time I cared they didn't. I watch HD games live with no blackouts on my iPad thanks to mlb at-bat's better support on iOS and the jailbreak app FakeLocation.
There's also way better resale value with the iPad than any other tablet... check eBay for proof. Those people selling Transformers for $400 $500? Don't be fooled... they're either getting 0 bids or they're selling a whole bundle with the keyboard and crap and losing a lot of money. Apple sheep's got the mob mentality so it's way easier to sell... people even buy broken Apple products for more than you think! (again check ebay for proof... I sold even sold my water damaged Macbook for $400) With another tablet it either sells for way less, or ends up in the trash if it's out of warranty.
I'm just saying all this out of experience. You don't have to go buy an iPad... go for what suits your needs all the way. It's your money and these things are expensive. Good luck with your decision!

I have access to the Samsung note 10.1, the ipad 3 and the Asus infinity 700.
For some reason the Asus is the slowest in the bunch by far. I'm constantly making sure i'm in performance mode and even after that it just runs slow, slow and slow. It is like an old Windows ME machine. You have to let it boot up and then let it sit for a while and let it finish do whatever it needs to do. It gets frustrating when you hit/tap a button multiple times and nothing happens because the delay is so bad. People will just bark out screen resolution but in reality the screen isn't that good at all. The colors are very weak and nothing pops.
The Samsung even though is all plastic is a fantastic tablet. It runs smooth and quick. It is just a great all around tablet.
The ipad has a gorgeous screen. Best screen i've seen on a tablet anywhere. I put all these 3 tablets on a table and ran some videos and different things and by far the ipad has an awesome screen.
I really would LOVE if the Asus tablet was faster. Maybe I'll try to wipe it again and see what happens?

Hmm... Strange. I have iPad 2 and had Galaxy Note 10.1 for 3 weeks. I agree that infinity is slowest (in particular browsing) but otherwise I didn't notice much difference in speed e.g. loading other applications. And even when things are slower I wouldn't say way slower. When I compared browser page loading time side by side, most pages loaded similar speed if simple; whereas, flash heavy site or some other whatever heady site took almost twice as long but that is 10 seconds vs. 20 seconds.
If you have all three, perhaps it would be nice to have comparison video posted by having three unit or two side by side and perform the exact same task.

People will have different experiences based on the apps and syncs they have set up; especially those that perform a lot of concurrent background processes. The sequential IO scores on Asus tablets are nothing to write home about but if you don't have a lot going on in the background performance should be adequate. The moment a bunch of stuff is going at the same time reads/writes become random (vs. sequential) and things go south pretty quick. So if you loaded Opentoe’s apps and set up his syncs on your TF700 you’d get his results. So you’re both right.

Personally, I would go for the first Windows RT tablet that is full HD, if Microsoft lets them make one that is.
Otherwise the ipad 3. I sold my replacement one because I grew to despise them for their lawsuits and over pricing. But if you can live with getting raped by the $300 profits then the new ipad is the best for now.
Windows tablets look crazy fast and smooth and functional though. Kind of like Playbook, webOS, and Android swipe gestures with IOS fluidity.

but guys u know what, i have Galaxy S3 and its JUST PERFECT! i only have 2 issues,
1- the built material is way flimsy for such a beast
2- i just wish they would have put some better audio recording chip for the video to make the audio recording better in the camera video mode

Hello all,
I currently have a Motorola Xoom and was thinking of selling it off and upgrading to a transformer infinity.
Looking around this seems to currently be the best android tablet and I love the idea of the dock keyboard. I have a keyboard for my Xoom but it means I have to prop the xoom up on something to be able to use it lol!
The infinity looks like a very impressive piece of kit, but I am just wondering what people's views are?
I am quite attached to my old Xoom, even though it's not the prettiest or lightest tablet around it's been worth its weight in gold and has worked with everything I have thrown at it and he battery life has also been very good. I've got my old Xoom rooted and running Jelly bean so I was wondering if the infinity was also a good solid device?
The only thing that I find annoying with my xoom is it's weight... its like carrying a brick sometimes and it's a little to heavy to hold with one hand

if you just read around the forum here, you will find all the information you need to make your decision.
as for what i think, i really like it. the new JB update has make it run a lot smoother and the dock works wonderfully. only thing i would see that would hold you back would be the build. not quality per say (although it does seem to be an issue for some) but the fact that the xoom is built like a brick. after going from such a sturdy tablet, any and all other tablets feel pretty flimsy so that will be something you need to judge for yourself.

I had xoom at one point, and felt heavy as well. Despite the difference is only ~200g, it is significant enough to notice. In any event, Infinity is indeed for me the best tablet available at the moment. Just make sure to get it from a place where you can potentially exchange as unfortunately quality control issue exist with ASUS.

For the reasons you listed - possibly yes. However take into account that while it might be the " best android tablet", it suffers from i/o issues and the last time I had so much stuttering and response lag was when I had a Motorola defy running 2.1... and this is supposed to be the top end tablet with JB.

I just bought one (literally, today), and I'm already regretting it. I simply can't live with the stuttering and choppyness of the browsers this thing provides. It's terrible. Probably returning mine to the store.

I was looking forward to getting a lighter tablet, the bulkiness and thickness of the Xoom is starting to get to me... It feels like an armoured tank! lol
I wonder if there is still stuttering and choppyness with custom ROMS? I guess I'll have to have a ready through these boards to find out some more before I decide.

My Infinity has been pretty much a good experience.
I'm not a nit-picker though.
Some folks have gotten some real nasty disappointing units.
There's plenty of good along with bad if you search these forum pages.
Check the Newegg and Amazon reviews for a little more input.

Who knows what that guy has going but most people are quite satisfied with browser experience. Especially now that Project butter is running for the Infinity. Just go to test drive it for yourself. Then you will know the answer to what your looking for.

I see this posted a lot and it's true with most browsers. That said I run opera and get smooth performance with it. I used it on my xoom when everyone complained about stuttering with the same result. when I used my xoom exclusively we had pretty much the same complaints. Unfortunately the opera team has yet to scale the url bar up to the infinity resolution yet so the text is tiny.

I was starting to miss my Xoom (i gave it to my father) about 3 weeks after i got the infinity. All the bugs and lag were getting on my nerves. But with the two recent updates, things have gotten better.

It's not all bad. It's got a cool design, it's light, sturdy.. got some powerful specs running under the hood, seems to be able to handle heating well, great camera, the best screen ever etc.. BUT - as great as those features are, I just can't get over how non responsive everything is. Any website I try to open on the default browser takes 3-4 secs to respond, some sites cause the browser to ANR, or it would appear to be displaying a site smoothly and then it freezes for a couple of seconds while you're trying to scroll; or switching between apps with the task manager, sometimes it's smooth as butter like on my S3, sometimes you can see how much it struggles; even going over the different settings menus makes it stutter. Not to mention the delay you get trying to flip the tablet from vertical to landscape..... it really bothers me.
I'm going to see if I can get a replacement and try out a different unit, maybe mine came from a bad batch at the factory, who knows. Maybe it actually runs smooth and consistently so for other people and what I'm experiencing is a faulty model. But if these issues are common then I would advise to stay away from the tf700 until Asus has it fixed (or sadly abandons it and retries with a new tablet).

To be honest with you, I don't think exchanging for another unit will give you a better experience. What you have described is pretty much the standard performance of the TF700. The fact is that Tegra 3 is not capable of driving a full HD screen (we are still stuck with single-channel memory in 2012!!!) and thus the stuttering. The poor I/O also makes things worse. Even the JB update cannot really make the browser free from ANR, and simple tasks such as downloading files in the background will make your tf700 unresponsive. If you want full HD screens, stay far away from Tegra 3. Snapdragon S4 Pro is the way to go.

Sounds like a mixed bag then, I think I shall have to try one out first for sure...just have to find somewhere selling one locally, or maybe order one on line and try it out for a few days, if it doesn't work out I could always send it back.
I just love the design with the attachable keyboard, and I am really looking for something a lot lighter than my Xoom. I did originally look at the Transformer Prime, and then I heard about the infinity.
I am sure the Infinity is great device, the Xoom also has a bad reputation but I have had no problems with it whatsoever.
I think a shopping trip is due today to see if I can find an Infinity in stores =)

The stock browser is bugged. That's common knowledge. Other browsers work just fine without hanging. One program having an issue is not the fault of the tablet if the rest works fine.
As for the ANr. Usually you (used to) get them when an app takes a while to load. Most of those times, it works again when you get the popup. Since JB I have only had one App Not Responding error, and that was a Live Wallpaper which Playstore listed as incompatible. That was my own fault, not the Tf's.
I've not had a single speed or performance issue. Nothing lags, everything runs fast. There are some very unlucky people here, and some very lucky ones.
The only negative I've found is that developers (not the guys here) are so obsessed with the SGS3 that there's hardly anything to be found for the Tegra 3 and the massive resolution of the TF700.

I must disagree with your point about ANR. It is true that the apps will usually work again after those pop-ups, but those ANR messages should not be there in the first place. They are annoying and make me less confident about my tablet's reliability. To be 100% honest, the Infinity is the most crash-prone Android devices I have ever used. You might not believe me, but my Sensation on ICS is a lot more stable than the Infinity, and less lags at well.
For the lack of development, I guess it is expected, given the high price tag of the Infinity and the fact that it is not a popular model.

Actually, the stock browser is the least buggy for me. Can't use chrome or dolphine because they stutter so much on the tf700.
I'm happy to hear you're experiencing a fast and smooth tablet as it suggests that getting a replacement will solve it.
Either we have different definitions to "lag-free" or Asus's quality control on the tablet is so meh that its smoothness and stability vary wildly from unit to unit.

Well I decided not to go for the infinity in the end, it sure looks good but my with my budget restraints I think it's a little out of my league at the moment
I've opted for the Prime as it was a considerable lot less... at least it's lighter than my Xoom.

I absolutely love my Infinity. ASUS does have quality control issues. Make sure you buy from a vendor that will allow returns if the device is defective. Mine came with a SMALL amount of light bleed, two minor scratches on the back plate, and the screen pops out of the bezel a TINY bit over the camera. These issues are annoying and it took me some time to accept them, but they don't hinder my device's performance. I would definitely recommend purchasing the Infinity, but make sure you get a good one.

Keep tf700 or wait for tegra 4?

I bought the tf700 about 2 weeks ago from best buy using the 50$ coupon that best buy messed up on. I actually bought it for 419 w/ tax going up to 450 which also includes the dock. Is this a good price for this? Well I have 2 weeks left for a full refund and I'm still debating if I should get a refund and wait for tegra 4 tablets or just keep it. There is slight flex on the screen which makes a clicking noise when I press on it but it doesn't really bother me. At first I was looking into ultrabooks but I gave tablet a try. Besides it's hard to find i5 ultrabooks for under 500. Help me decide!!

That is a good price IMO.
I'd say this is a factor of your budget and how much you use your tablet. I got the first Android tablet, a Motorola Xoom, on launch day. I had it for a few months and used it a lot then decided to sell it prematurely in order to wait for the next best thing which in my eyes was an HD screen. Well I ended up having to wait almost a year before I got my next tablet, a TF700. That entire year I was kicking myself for not holding on to the Xoom until I actually had another tablet in my possession.
So I guess you have to ask yourself how important to you is having a tablet? At that price I'm guessing you could probably sell it for a ~$100 loss a few months down the road. Who knows though the next generation of tablets might take longer to come out, like the delay we had on the 1080P tablets. With that in mind, if I were you, I'd keep it!

$450.00 for tab and dock?
I'd say that's a good deal.
If the click bugs you trade that in for one that doesn't click.

Just picked up a TF700 myself and I was literally asking myself the same question. I've got a little less than 60 days to return this to BBY if another tab is announced for release soon.
I guess, there are a few things to consider.
1) Is the better performance/battery life of the new device going to be significant? If they jack up the resolution like the N10, it will probably be closer to par with the TF700.
2) Will a new tablet have any hardware issues (e.g. TF-Prime GPS & Wifi problems)? The TF700 is a mature product and it's limitations are well outlined. If you buy a TF700 now, you know exactly what you are going to get.
3) What new features will be on this Tab, and are they worth waiting for? TF700 has SDXC, mini HDMI, a dock with full USB, Full HD, etc. It's a good feature set. TF700 is a bit low on ram with only 1GB, I'd rather have 2GB. It's missing an integrated LTE modem that is said to be in T4, but TBH, I would always buy the wifi version anyway. Better battery life, I wouldn't pay for the extra data plan, and my phone is now tethering fine (thanks TrevE). N10 like resolution looks impressive on paper, but not so in person. I have good eyesight, and the difference isn't noticeable. It's an advertising point over the ipad. Google needs to stop chasing Apple and build more hardware features into their tablets that Apple didn't already do a year ago, but I digress.
4) Are there any applications you cannot run on the TF700 that a new tab would fix? I picked u the TF700 because my Touchpad (running CM9) keeps crashing skype; which I use daily. I run a somewhat recent nightly, and since the Camera fix (thanks for that Dorregaray) being able to use skype at all is awesome. However, having to reboot the tablet 6 times in a night and constantly mucking up the conversation is real pain. Since using the TF700, I haven't had one hiccup in skype. That is worth a lot to me, but a newer tab won't make it better.
Anyway, those are the things I've been mulling over. I will need to see what the new Transformer will look like before I make any kind of decision.
Edit: FWIW, I paid $468 for the tab & a 32GB micro sdxc card. I think you got the better deal.

Have they given a release date for any Tegra4 device? I thought one was shown at the last electronics show but it was still a development model and didn't mention anything about release times or price. You could be waiting awhile and in meantime if you keep the TF700 start stashing away some money monthly for the next wave of tablets. That could help on any loss you take or cover the difference to a model with more storage.

1 - I don't think anyone can tell what the performance and battery life will be like right now. New devices and cpu's are marketed as more performance while reducing energy needs but the tech community needs products to test before accepting what is said as fact. Are Tegra4 chps supposed to run at the same power that today's Tegra3 chips do but have the better performance? That is a performance improvement while reducing the power needed if they were to make a Tegra3 to equal that performance. Someone may have a better answer regarding power saving but remember a bumped up screen size will probably draw more power anyway.
2 - Again probably hard to answer. Until the product hits the market we really won't know how it performs and what problems it may or may not have. It is a risk you take by buying the next and greatest device. Prime was the next and greatest device and we know how that turned out. We can only hope they get the message after 3 devices that they need better I/O components.
4 - As far as applications I think many people have issue with games that are released or already out and "not supported" by our device. It will take some time once a new device comes out for companies to tweak the code or whatever they do to have the games run on the device. That is done on their whim. Why some haven't not done now on the TF700 (Gameloft and EA) is a question I don't think anyone truly knows. Some guess it's screen resolution and they don't want to change the code to render the graphics properly for our device.
But really you can wait and wait and still not be satisfied because something else is a few months away. This technology is moving fast.

Well, I had really wanted a "Wayne" (Tegra 4) device, and was waiting for that to launch to replace/augment the touchpad. The marketing slides showing kepler tech integrated into the SoC is actually a little bit exicting to me. However, I took advantage of a time limited offer to get the TFI at a reduced price. I use google docs for invoicing clients, and the Touchpad wasn't handling that well enough for me to do it on site. I found myself just waiting to get home to do it & emailing an invoice back. The TFI with the keyboard dock provides an excellent solution, and I had considered getting an ultra book for this purpose, but at about half the price of the ultrabook I was looking at, while fulfilling essentially the same purpose, having the same size profile, and better battery life, well it seemed like the better bargain.
That said, if I could get my hands on a next gen transformer within the next 60 days, I'd likely trade this in, in a heart beat.

My opinion the TF700T is viable for a while longer.
Glad the FHD tabs didn't shoot of into a numbers game as quick as I thought they would.
All I can say is after the "lobotomy" lol...my tablet has been a satisfying adventure.
It's smooth no jitters, games well (light gaming), plays my Xfinity downloads without a hitch, wifi connects stays connected, gps is quick,
browser is hanging in there...etc.
Just for a bit of comparison:
I've side by sided the tablet with my 2 year old HP AMD A6 notebook, and for what it is the tab has about the same amount of annoyance that a Win7 notebook has.
Not comparing Windows to Android just noting all devices big and small can of course suffer glitchiness.
Once the system settles in and with a little restraint as far as collecting\installing poorly written apps the Infinity remains a buy at least for me.
Hopefully when the newer tabs start popping perhaps some of us hold-outs will benefit from a much better selection of HD tablet applications.

How did you get the 60 day refund period? On my best buy receipt it states 30 days hassle free returns. Also it's a little weird that my tf700 freezes and randomly reboots. It doesn't do it frequently but once in awhile it does that.....very weird. This is actually my second tablet because the first one had slight flex but the current one actually makes a small clicking noise too. Honestly it doens't really bother me but ASus def needs to work on their quality control

Personally, waiting for the next tablet from ASUS (I assume you want a Transformer tablet) will be a very painful experience. Our tf700 was announced at CES 2012 (in January 2012), but only became available for sale at least 4 months later (depend on your location). Given the fact that ASUS has not announced any successor to our Infinity yet, I am inclined to believe if there is a Tegra 4 tablet from ASUS, it will only be available to us on the second half of the year. I have been waiting for the Transformer Book for many months but it is still not available. To me, waiting for something that is not even announced yet is a waste of time and effort.

I would strongly reccomend this tab to anyone who needs something with similar functionality to a netbook or ultrabook but I am looking forward to see what will come next. I would love to see something with a little more power hit the same nitch and with about the same price point... I'm actually waiting on the razer edge tablet to see what it turns into. anyways, I plan on hanging on to my TF700 even if I do get an ultrabook or the edge.

Premier Silver. Drop enough cash at best buy and you get side benefits, like a doubled return period. Most of the the other benefits are less useful. I don't bother with the complimentary Geek Squad services, for example. Even if I wanted or needed their services (I don't), I still wouldn't use it. Mostly, that's just an opportunity for them to come into your home and look for things they can sell you.

Honestly. ...maybe a extra gig of ram would make this tablet perfect for me. The resolution is ideal for me and the speed is great (running CleanRom) and it does what I hope to get from it. And I use my note 2 for the extra stuff (multi window, nfc sharing etc). And to top that, the mobile giants still have not made 100% use of the quad core as it is and until then, asus infinity is a keeper.

Tegra 4 isn't shipping until QTR 3 2013. Given that time frame, I'm reasonably happy with my purchase. If the SoC isn't even shipping until then, you won't see devices until QTR 4, and that's nearly a year away. No doubt there will be better performers from Qualcomm sooner than that, but even so, I'm happy with the device I have for now.

searched but haven't even found rumors on a successor - had the TFPrime before and since it got nicked I am waiting for sth new to play with.
Have started considering the Samsung Tab Plus (whenever announced) given the higher res. Still seems that the TF700 has enough muscles and the add keyboard (+battery) is clearly a plus...
Anyhow - have there been any news on the TF700 successor that I missed

I have to agree about the extra gig of ram. But in response to the OP's question, yes that is a very good price. You could always dualboot it with rabbits' linux so as to gain some of the functionality that you would get with an ultrabook. The infinity will not become redundant for a while yet in my opinion so I say go for it.

For tablet with awesome dock integration the tf700 cant be beat. You also got a great deal on both. As far at Tegra 4 devices in particular Asus ones, no one knows yet when they will actually release one so you will have to play the waiting game. Vizio is the only one I know of that is coming out with one but not sold in the U.S. and doesn't have a keyboard dock option.
As someone mentioned the tf700 is a good laptop or netbook replacement. So if you're not going to play high graphic games on it like gameloft games then its a good tablet. But I do recommend you unlock and install custom rom on it as it lags quite a bit in stock form.

Unless the device has a battery-powered dock, I'd suspect battery life is going to be on par at best -- expect it to be worse. This may not apply if the new device carries one of those funky new battery design which last for a week and are charged in 10 minutes, but those will only get on the market in about two years, they reckon.
2) Will a new tablet have any hardware issues (e.g. TF-Prime GPS & Wifi problems)? The TF700 is a mature product and it's limitations are well outlined. If you buy a TF700 now, you know exactly what you are going to get.

Obviously true, and very significant remark. Any device will have its issues, and given the fact that the TF201 suffered from some of these as well, I'd not expect the next Transformer to be faultless either. :S
3) What new features will be on this Tab, and are they worth waiting for? TF700 has SDXC, mini HDMI, a dock with full USB, Full HD, etc. It's a good feature set. TF700 is a bit low on ram with only 1GB, I'd rather have 2GB. It's missing an integrated LTE modem that is said to be in T4, but TBH, I would always buy the wifi version anyway. Better battery life, I wouldn't pay for the extra data plan, and my phone is now tethering fine (thanks TrevE). N10 like resolution looks impressive on paper, but not so in person. I have good eyesight, and the difference isn't noticeable. It's an advertising point over the ipad. Google needs to stop chasing Apple and build more hardware features into their tablets that Apple didn't already do a year ago, but I digress.

And the N10 has both QA and availability issues, for example.
Following your digression for a bit: Apple had already lost the innovation game in the tablet and smartphone worlds a few years ago. All they have done is increase screen size, and (sometimes) resolution.
4) Are there any applications you cannot run on the TF700 that a new tab would fix? I picked u the TF700 because my Touchpad (running CM9) keeps crashing skype; which I use daily. I run a somewhat recent nightly, and since the Camera fix (thanks for that Dorregaray) being able to use skype at all is awesome. However, having to reboot the tablet 6 times in a night and constantly mucking up the conversation is real pain. Since using the TF700, I haven't had one hiccup in skype. That is worth a lot to me, but a newer tab won't make it better.

If anything, the older device will probably support more apps altogether -- if you have experienced the transitions from Froyo to Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean, you have noticed that we lost a lot of apps along the way that were pretty good in themselves, but just weren't given the TLC to update them to function on the new version. Backward compatibility is less of an issue when the programmer takes it into account when developing his/her app, but too often an app is just hacked together and subsequently, essentially, abandoned.[/QUOTE]

With the new crop of top end tablets coming out are you guys/gals going to upgrade?
I love the Asus keyboard dock and relatively quick updates but the I/o lag kills me on the TF700. Installing an app and trying to browse the web brings it to a crawl. I'd rather not have to root and install a new ROM to use this thing.
I had the original Samsung Tab 10.1 and while it's stuck on 4.0 it performs better than the TF700.
I'm going for the Note 2014 edition over the TF701 this time around. The big bezels are looking really dated. One speaker is also a real downer. The fact that Samsung stuff can play Tapped Out is another plus for me. The Note 2014 also charges with a standard micro USB. The Asus charge cable not working with regular USB high amp chargers was really annoying as well.

No. The TF700 does everything I need from a tablet.

I did, and it was the main reason why I'm keeping the TF700.

I'm not going to upgrade my tab. After the warranty was off, i unlocked it and installed CROMI-X and this was like upgrading from a old 2012 tab to a new 2014 tab. And you know what ? It's free (no money to spend to upgrade) apart of your willing to give donation to the community of developpers.

I am just not impressed with the state of 10.1" tablets. Asus supported the TF700 very well for a relatively long time, but it looks like their Memopads and Intel tablets are being treated like shovelware. I can't bring myself to trust them until that changes. Ditto for Samsung. I would probably take the plunge for a new Nexus 10 revision, but the rumor mill is indicating that it might not happen.
I really don't want to support Asus, but given the current state of affairs I might end up picking up a T100. It kills me to buy what is essentially a netbook, but the prospect of direct OS updates combined with x86 app support is starting to sound attractive.
Show me a GPE transformer with a next-gen SoC (K1 or Snapdragon 8xx) and I'll be back on board with Android in a heartbeat. I wouldn't trade my Nexus 4 for anything but a Nexus 5. I would have told you the same thing about my TF700 for a very long time, but the market has changed.
Oh, and iPads. I don't do the walled garden thing.

Did the same and now I use it all the time. Performance and stability are great and a 10" tablet with a keyboard dock is exactly what I want.

With the price of the t100 now, i think it will be my next device even though its constructions looks cheap like a low end acer laptop, the x86 bay trail soc is very interesting and has full dx11 / opengl support as opposed to the limited open gles support of arm/ tegra socs , im done with tegra untiil we get the tegra k1 with Linux drivers

I'm in the same boat. I have rooted and installed CROMI-X but my transformer is still slow as all get out (if I'm in an app and hit the home button I can usually count to 3 or 4 slowly before i actually get to the home screen; I had to turn off auto app updates because once it started updating apps my tablet was completely unusable until it finished... like 10 minutes later...)
My biggest requirement is HD resolution. The dock I can take or leave. I looked at the MeMo Pad FHD, the price is right, but I'm worried another ASUS tab I'll be in the same boat. I'm also afraid to drop $500+ on one of the new samsung tabs because for that $$$ I better be ecstatic with the results and I'm worried I won't be.
If anyone has upgraded from an infinity and can offer their experiences with the replacement unit let me know!

Something is wrong with your setup - hitting the home button should be pretty much instantaneous. What you are experiencing is not normal.

I agree hehe. It's a clean install of latest cromi at this point. I was using data2sd which seemed somewhat better, but still not great, but then it started locking up all the time and the sd card became corrupted so I went back to a standard install, full wipe. Maybe it's faulty hardware but I'm sort of tired of messing with it and ready to get something that just works.

I bought an acer w700 with a 3rd gen i5 processor, 4 gig of RAM, and costs about $500++. comes with a free keyboard case from acer, and so far, it runs great.

On paper, I am looking at the Xperia Z2 tablet: Snapdragon 801, 3GB RAM, microSD card, Android 4.4, waterproof, dustproof, full HD screen with excellent color gamut, thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet and finally, front-facing stereo speakers. Sony's skin is quite minimal as well, so performance out of the box should be really good. I must say this tablet ticks every single requirement that I have (minus the keyboard dock). Who knows, this year might be the year of Sony.

I had the TF100 for nearly 3 years and was very happy with running custom android releases. With Kit Kat it ran really well.
Upgraded to a used TF700 and immediately loaded a 4.4.2 nightly. The TF700 has a better screeen, but the TF100 feels equally "fast." The dock of the TF700 is inferior to the TF100 dock (lighter, keys have less travel, or positive action. The whole thing just feels like a cheaped out version of the TF100. The GPS does work better than the TF100.
Anyway, the company I work for is moving to several RT apps, and providing Surface tablets. Further, I may pick up a refurb'd pro. Speed wise it is just a whole nother animal, yet at $399 refurb, it is at the same price point as a TF700.

With an android phone, and having android tablets for the last few years, I am pretty sure I want to stick with android. I have a windows 8 laptop and for a lot of the things I do I haven't been happy with the app selection. Which is a shame because most of the windows 8 laptops i've looked at are powerhouses and very smooth experiences.

Never going to support that company again. It is the worst piece of hardware I ever owned.
The design is neat but that is all. Build quality sucks, light sensor does not work, gorilla glass has scratches, back has scratches, the power plug bend the jack.
And the interior is even worse. I mean I could even live with all the outside flaws but as said that I/O lag is killing.
The tab feels like an old 133MHZ computer. I bought a tablet to just switch it on and use it.
But switching on the ASUS results in a dead tablet for 30 minutes because of updates and what not. Browsing is near to impossible.
I only kept it because of the nice screen (brightness) and as I need it for my exam to read on it.
Although for just a reading device it was much overpriced.
Why am I ranting about all this? I won't buy any other tablet if those things aren't fixed with that.
So any device that comes close to the design of the TF700 especially regarding to weight and screen brightness/readability (in sunlight)
and does not have those bugs is my next one.
I really hope for another Nexus 10" tablet not build by ASUS. My NexusOne was great and I'm in love with my Nexus4.
