Should I root&flash rom to my device? - HTC One S

Hi all, I am wondering if I should root & flash a custom rom for my device.
Right now my device is working pretty good, but the only thing that bothering me a lot is the battery life.
I can get only 4 hours of screen time, but I want more.
Does it possible to get more than 4 hours in a custom rom?
And does it worth to root my device anyway?
I'm afraid to get more virus because of that, or to not be secure because of the root .. Does it true ?
Please answer my questions, and tell me if it's really worth to root my device or not, and why .

It is possible to get more battery life if that's what you want, to me honestly its worth rooting, right now I'm using trickdroid which is stock and there are more roms out there in the development section but I ended up staying with this one personally, and I have even more battery than when I used to not have rooted it but really it depends on your decision, about the virus thing I haven't really heard about a lot of people having this problem but if your concerned about that you can download a anti virus app for it. I use trickdroid and I'm at 75 percent left in about 13 hrs 22 mins and so many seconds used on this phone so for me its worth the root and I'm a pretty heavy user I text and surf the web while listening to music and play a couple games here and there but over all the battery life is better than it not being rooted. But you should try it out yourself and see if you like it.... Hopefully my answer kinda helps you out

You should try it out for yourself and see if it fits your needs, I get pretty good battery life using this phone on a regularly day, it would usually last me about 4 or 5 hours of hevy use on non root but since I rooted it actually lasts me at least 8 to 9 hours of heavy use and the removal of all the bloat really saves you some battery and really that's what I wanted from the start was all the HTC and T-Mobile apps gone from it but I got more than what I wanted now I'm happy with this custom rom and don't really plan on changing anytime soon unless something better comes out.
Hopefully this helped you out a little

[Q] Can I get some help with my logcat file

These couple of days, my battery drain has been abnormal. I just got a tablet and have not been paying much attention to my nexus S, but strangely enough, the nexus S battery drain seems to be more now than I am using it less.
I have been pouring over my logcat for the whole of last night and this morning but I cannot seem to make head or tails with it.
Could any experts have a look at it and see where the problem lies, I don't know if I have caught myself one of those malwares or some app is misbehaving?
Much appreciated.
Could some please help me have a look at this because its driving me insane, trying to figure out the misbehaving apps.
Would really appreciate any help at all.
You seem to be using a lot of activities/Intents without stopping any of them.
Maybe try downloading an advanced task killer from the market and make sure to stop several tasks as even leaving ur phone idle with them running drains the battery.
So yeah, try getting one of those and stopping the tasks running at times.
I don't recommend atk it will season the same if not more if you have run away activities and keep killing them you need to get to the root of the issue. What does settings say about your battery use?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
On the settings > phone > battery, it looks normal. Thats why I went into logcat. However over night I am losing about 30% whereas I know with my current settings, i would only lose 2-3% maximum.
Really no one? I got a Google plus invite for the person who is willing to help
Lol I forgot about this will look in a minute

I really do not know what to say. Initially, the battery was fine. Then I am not sure what happened, the battery life became adnormal. Pouring through the logcat file, I was not able to find anything wrong. I tend went to try another rom Miui to be specific. Found that that was not my cup of tea. I could not install swype to save my life. I reverted back to my backed up ROM, which is really a rooted stock build number GRJ22 and now the battery life has gone back to what is was before but now its giving me too much battery life??!!
My usage is very light at best, because I am still playing around a lot with the new tablet that I got.
Sorry bro dropped the rom and was busy I got time today but did you get rid of the issue?

You are getting ONE day+ with a massive use?
didn't fix it for me
My Wifi connection is solid but every couple of hours the wifi gets disconnected and reconnects. I have trickdroid v5.0 for tmobile. I beleive I tried the v4.4 for the international one s and it had the same issue. I did go thru all of the steps (bootloader unlock, root, fastboot script, and recovery installation of rom). I did it twice for good measure. i still have the same problem.
On a side note I'm not sure if this is related but my friend with the exact same tmo one s and I were doing speed tests. He Consistently got twice my speeds. We both have the same tmobile service and were at the location using the same server. He was using stock ROM and rooted.

I tried updating to the latest tmo radio and still no luck. I flashed the LeeDroid rom and I got high speeds, even though I flashed the newest radio on the Leedroid rom too. But I'm getting the same speeds as my friend is on his stock rom.
Also another issue I noticed with the tmo trickdroid v5 is that it doesn't recognise a (wired) headset for sounds or mic. Did anyone else have this issue?
update: the headset works fine on leedroid fyi

[Q] Rooting...Please Don't Hate Me For Asking But I'm Torn

Shoudl I root??? I want to but I'm not to sure if its the right decision. Since the day I got this phone I've seen thread after thread of problems only seen after rooting. I've gone about 4 months without doing anything to my One S and have had no issues, but now I want to move to T-Mobiles unlimited plan but I still want tethering and from what I understand, that's the only way to keep it. I've been looking for some sort of deciding factor in it all but can't find one. Please help me decide?

Rooting is easy, but takes some research and knowledge. If you can't even learn why you should root yourself, you probably aren't ready to do it either.

You say rooting has issues? I am rooted and have no issues at all.
The only risk you partake is that you may void your warranty for unlocking the bootloader.
Rooting is nothing but super user. It could set there and do nothing just like unrooted.

To clarify, you don't lose the sense camera by rooting! You lose the sense camera by installing a Rom that is not sense based: any aosp rom like cyanogen mod. Any Rom that is based on sense like viper, or trick droid, you will have a fully functioning sense camera.

To answer your question directly, rooting this phone is easy and no negatives if you read a lot and understand wty may be voided and if you screw up, chance of losing a phone. But, you already know that from the other rooting you mentioned you did.
Most people that have issues don't wait long enough to learn phone and don't study the process enough. Reading just one root thread is not enough. I spent weeks reading everything I could before rooting my N1.
Benefits outweigh risks. I would root just to get Nandroids and Titanium Backup.
To me this is a hobby as at the end of the day, it is still a phone with email/internet.
Sorry, that wasn't a direct answer. But, no more risks rooting this phone than any other. Just know if you are S3 or S4 and what hboot you have before flashing roms.
Also, if you can't find a strong reason to root, I wouldn't--this phone can stand on its own--

Thank you very much for your input, I appreciate it. I agree with everything you said especially the part about the phone being able to stand on its own, I've had it for months and its great. I will be making my decision by the end of the night haha. (Jeez, you'd think I wouldn't have to put so much importance on a phone :/)
Jeez, you'd think I wouldn't have to put so much importance on a phone :/)
You are not the only one--
Good Luck on whatever you do--
I will add one more thought--I have been doing this for several years back to early Cyanogen/Modaco on my N1 on the Nexus One Forum. Hundreds of flashes and can say I am getting a little tapped out. I may not root myself when I get my next phone. They have come so far from those early days-- hear tell the next generation phones will have my coffee ready when I get up--

That's what I thought about this one, but every time my finger accidentally hit some idiotic bloat app or I couldn't launch a YouTube link with the app, it pissed me off. With the exception of the iPhone, all modern smartphones really need to be rooted to pry the carrier's fingers out of the deep crevices of your $600 pocket computer.
yes, excellent points on the bloat. that's why odds are I would still root for the features I mentioned above and maybe skip the continuous flashing of custom roms--
however, with more memory and speed coming the bloat may not be a factor. and, I think we can kinda freeze some of these apps now. haven't paid much attention to that feature as I rooted same day i got phone--
I waited a few weeks, then waited a few more weeks after rooting and debloating, but the allure of CM was too strong. I just cant stand the disjointed look of Sense.
CM10 is running pretty good--flashing nightlies
Guess we're getting of topic, or may entice OP to root--

[Q] Any way to turn this into a tablet with WiFi only?

This was my wifes POS Phone till I upgraded her to a SGSIII for Christmas. Now I have a device that would be perfect for my daughter if it weren't for the pesky phone option and Sprint bloatware. Are there any roms available that strip this phone to bare bones with no radios except WiFi? Haven't been able to find any and it might not be on the top of the Dev's todo list so if anyone is up to a ROM that will make this device at least usable because as a phone it SUCKS, but for a kiddo it would be a great toy with some of the game apps. Thanks in advance, and if I missed a ROM that does exactly what I'm asking in the mountains of pages in the Dev forum, please use only a small flame as I'm old and have a cold LOL.
A tip: when asking for help you might want to avoid talking trash about a device we users enjoy using.
My advice, 'the device sucks' and is a 'pos' so why bother doing anything with it. Go buy yourself, your kid or whoever an ipod and move on.

Just hate HTC. Have since the TP2. No appologies for that when they make life just such a pain in the ass. Even cringed when the wife chose it but cest la vie. I'm not going against the boss. Maybe I'm just stupid but I've tried rooting but its a 2.3.4 and every option this thread gives me doesn't work for some reason or another. ShiftRR doesn't run at all saying ADB is at fault but I can ADB into the whole phone myself no problems, ShiftySonOfA almost works but creates a boot loop that thankfully is repaired by doing an --undo, Quickroot seems to work but then unroots the phone just as soon as it reboots. Trying to do it manually using the info on here gives me exactly the same boot loop as the ShiftySonOfA.BAT file does and trying to update from SD using a PG06img.zip I got from a rootkit fails. I can't help it if I'm a Samsung fan. Their goal in life isn't making their users stress out over their phones by daring to think they can do better than they can. If its too much to ask that my RAM isn't more than half full just with OS and bloatware because this phone refuses to root then so be it but even if its miles below my Nexus it's still MILES above any iPoo device.
Then throw it out and go buy a portable media player, or better yet send it to a dev who would put it to use and go buy some type of portable media player.
Edit: and to anyone who actually wants to try and help this guy, does this really seem like a person we need to deal with in our little speedy community in the future?

ROFL Speedy community. Half of you are talking about swapping out to Photons and the other half are moving to One X's. yes I've read an awful lot before posting a question. Guess I'll be getting absolutely no help here. Not that there is much help available for this device when all the links are broken and the ones that are working, don't work for their intended purpose. Feel free to delete the thread MOD I'll stay where I'm welcome, in the Samsung sections.
Happy to see you leave, please don't come again.
Edit: and you couldn't have read to much or you would have been able to root it. Well then again, you were calling your recovery touchwiz in another thread soooo... I'm guessing you have some trouble grasping things at times.

Well its probably been a while since you researched how to root, because if you done that more recently or even looked at my sig, you would have already rooted that shift. I posted it here and in 3 other well-known forums so its hard to believe that you haven't found it.

I'm sure it's working and all, but if you have to disable everything and do all this manual syncing doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a more advanced phone?

I know your point, like I stated It might not be for everyone, a lot of people use their phone for business purposes, sadly they will have to leave auto sync on, but the list is long, you can still leave enable what you use the most, and disable other apps, I shared this to help other in a hurry, you might forget your charger, or spare battery, you never know,

I know, it would just be nice if they could put a battery in this thing that can keep up with the software.

Hey if this is REALLY TO HELP THE COMMUNITY let me say a few things.
DON'T ROOT PURELY ON BATTERY LIFE!!! If any different on battery life it's only a hair difference.... Maybe half a hairs difference.
First I find this O. P.. To be INACCURATE AND MISLEADING..
You do NOT HAVE TO BE ROOTED TO GET GOOD BATTERY LIFE...
I do use GREENIFY. This app itself will help your standby time dramatically.. And keep location off if I'm not using.... Also I'm LTE all day....
KEEP IN MIND THIS IS A COMPARISON NOT A CONTEST!!!
Today I will post my third and final test of battery time...

@O.P... I'm also curious to know where is the screenshot of the 30+ hour battery time you were bragging to me in other thread... UNLESS YOU WERE MAKING IT UP...
Edit. I don't want to come off wrong or burn any bridges IMHO you should remove rooted from the title If you can not show a dramatic difference in performance..

Sir...whats your problem??? Did you even read bro??? How long you been rooting phones??? We all know here rooting ALWAYS improve battery life cuz we have EVEN better control in apps!! Did you even read my comment above??? I also stated its not for everyone, do you really think 2 hrs SOT doesnt make a difference??? Why dont YOU prove it then. Even 30 min extra of SOT makes a difference! Come on...i really stated it was something to help anyone who really needs an extra juice to make it home or something. I also have no points of saying im getting 33hrs + on each charge if im lying, why should lie? The point is NO ONE use the phone the same way...You need to realize that. Now i will post my 35hrs on battery and 4.5 hrs SOT below but you will tell me "that doesnt make a difference" either way....thanks man have a nice day:highfive:
Sir that's the post picture you should have lead with.. I would have never even commented.. Nice job.. And apologies..
I will still post super great screen on time stock pic shortly

I have been rooting phones from my store for 5 years.... Also I will be rooting but not for battery performance.. Like I said it's not a contest, it's a comparison.. So don't get salty about it.. I know 30 minutes count and I have not had the time to do the screen on test.. But today I do and I will post my final test later...
I'm not saying root does not help battery but I do strongly feel that at the moment it is not a big difference because development has not really taken off yet. So you do not see fully optimized roms yet. Some people will read this thread and follow it and see that it is not up to their expectations...
And as far as 35 hours post sir I will salute you.

I also prefer a slimmer phone on a regular basis as I generally use no case... Don't be mad at me buddy I was just showing the difference between your rooted and my stock.. And like I said if you would of lead off with the 30+ hour I would have never even left a comment....
And I do agree that battery life is improved when rooted but I also believe it has a lot to with custom kernels which we are lacking at the moment...
BeameD From My LG V10... The one with the ALWAYS ON SCREEN... Watching me.. ?
Or keep a spare battery in your wallet and turn on everything.. Better than disabling tgis, disabling that, disabling everything to save battery.. Lol

I'm getting great battery life without doing all this. The only thing I would recommend to people not getting good battery life is do a factory reset. That's it.

I knew you would only get upset?... To answer your question I'm 28.. But I don't see how that has anything to do with the screen shots I posted in comparison to yours... You see when you posted the pics of the 30+ hour battery I was man enough to admit you got me.. But now that the shoe is on the other foot you want to challenge me.
Either way LIKE I SAID ROOT IS NOT REQUIRED AND THIS THREAD IS MISLEADING....
9+ HOURS SCREEN ON TIME.. PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING...
And just as you asked me how long I have been rooting I wonder the same about you.. You should at least know until a custom kernel is developed you will not see a difference at least not big enough to tell somebody root there phone and kill their warranty.

I know you may know what thats like being that you descend from the same country as I.. But here People work together and each thread comes with criticisms and comparisons..
