[Q] Will using a custom Rom solve my issues with the Transformer?

i have been an owner of the Transformer for just under a week, to be honest i think its a let down.
Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
I could go on.
I know the OS is relatively new, but i cant buy that. The tablet cost me £415 with dock, If i was a normal customer, (the everyday user) i would take it back to the shop as i would think it was broke.
My last point is the constant crashes, it even locked up while trying to shut down.
So please please please tell me there is an answer, i so want to like it, as the concept is brill, i based buying this on my xperia play, i love the os, but honeycomb maybe the problem here!

First of all, what android version and firmware build are you running and are you rooted? Secondly, have you performed any OTA updates since you bought your TF? Before I installed a custom rom on my TF, I myself have experienced serious lag and slow down due to multiple OTA updates. As with any pc based platform, its typically best to do a full wipe and perform a clean install to have it running at its peak. Before I took the route of a custom rom, i did a full wipe and fresh install and could immediately tell the difference in speed. So my suggestion is that you take that route first. Also, if you are interested in rooting and installing a custom rom, be advised that starting with the B70 revision, ASUS changed and locked down the bootloaders and they are currently unrootable at this time...which means you won't be able to install a custom rom. Find your S/N and if it starts with B70 or higher, then you won't be able to root at this time.

I have not had to many FCs, either stock or on Prime. Most times that I get any problems at all are in the stock browser, and usually thenjust a matter of slowness and the occasional "FC or Wait" prompt; particuarlly on more 'involved' web pages. Loading pages are also fairly sloow at times but still faster than my phone. My phone uses Opera for tremendous inprovement over it's stock browser.
Don't know about the 720p, haven't tried and don't know what program you used. Out of box is rather minimal audio/video playback as far as I noticed.
General performance wise, this thing beats a number of x86 systems I've had, espiecally while compiling C/C++ code.
If it's not something closer to the hardware, doing an nvflash to a custom rom might be worth trying but it can be an irk to deal with nuking everythiing you have stored, backups or no.

I have this issue, too - probably Tegra2 related (OCing may help?)

Get DicePlayer - best player around, supports HW acceleration and 720p is good as well (compared to others) - thanks to tegra2 plugins. Not free tough.

Higher resoltioun and tegra2 issue AFAIK (might be wrong).

Check to make sure you've received all updates on your tab

You are correct, custom roms are always going to end up being preference. If you are able to root, the best way to start off this endeavor is to visit the posts of all 3 major roms for the TF in the development section. Find out what each rom offers, and make your decision based off of that. You can always try out each rom to see which one you like better.

My choices are limited now
checked my serial and its B70.
Looks like i'm stuck with stock until asus / google sort my issues.

i here good things about opera, but i dont like the way it loads (waiting for the page to load before displaying) is there anyway to disable this feature?

Asus changed the bootloader not too long after they started making the B70 revisions. So there is a very small window of chance that your TF can be rooted. You can always try, but the chances are slim. I can't answer your Opera question...I don't use Opera.

There is no option for this in Opera Mobile; I should know, it's what I use off the phone next to me .
Opera Mini is probably the same, but I would highly doubt it would support that feature even if it wasn't.

Anyway, just accept you got suckered in to all this EEE Fad, iFad marketing BS. The Tegra 2 is a $5 PoS SoC... kind of like the PoS Atom CPU.
Tabs are fairly useless, but you wanted to waste some money
Oh if you disable flash in the stock browser it's speed is good.
I'm stuck with stock too ... REALLY FARKING pisses me off that I'm locked out of my own device.

Lol, this man has made the greatest mod to his TF!
But yeah, try running a custom rom (if you can) and see if your problems are still present. If so, contact Asus and maybe they will give you a replacement, could simple be some hardware malfunctions.

well i tried to root using the all in one tool, when trying to backup and root i kept getting an error cannot boot to pad or something like that, so for now ive had to admit defeat and wait for some bright spark to hopefully crack the new bootloader :-(

Just wanted to bump my original thread to say after alot of complaing from me i can now say i am a proud owner of the Asus Transformer TF101.
Thanks to the fact i can now root and install custom roms.
After a few weeks of trial and error, i tried, revolver, Prime and KRAKD.
The latter for me was easily the best so so smooth, OC 1.504 i tried same on the other Roms, but with KRAKD i had no issues and its just so much quicker in my opinion.
One issue that exists in all the custom roms is that the xbox controller doesn't work until you change the kernel. Weird.
Brwosing is more of a joy and with ICS on its way my tablet experience is looking up!
Still tempted by windows 8 but we will wait and see.

If you have a PS3, you should be able to use a Sigaxis controller using the Sigaxis application on the market as well.

Infinity great at first then getting worse with use.

I got rid of my prime for an Infinity and when i first got the infinity, it was flying. Fast, stable, wonderful...especially compared to the prime. After about 1.5 wks of daily use, ive been getting random lock ups and slow downs and have had to reboot or cold boot several times now. I have been very careful to not load too many apps or games and if i think an app or game is causing the problem then i immediately delete it.
I recall this happening to the Prime and am wondering if this is how its going to be with these ASUS tablets? They are so great at first then slow down and become laggy causing the user experience to sufffer greatly. Does anyone think JB is going to fix this problem?

Not sure if it's the Zeus ROM or what, but I don't have any performance issues to speak of!
For those having performance issues - maybe try the Zeus ROM and see if that helps (at least until JB comes out)...

I'm just like everyone else...scouring that play store for the one!
Been unloading a lot of stuff that I thought was groovy.
To me the tab seems the same or a bit better than it's first day in my clutches.
Finally settled on the ICS+ browser...the rest of them have features yet to me cause some frowning.
Heck I dunno...

mines started off smooth as well, then came a lot of freezes and force closings. I did a factory reset about a week ago, and its seems back to the way it originally was. Everything is fine now. I do hope JB comes soon though.

Well, I was going to say it seems to come and go with mine but I've gotten about 10 browser not responding messages trying to reply. It started off really good when I first go it but it has gotten progressively worse since then. One thing I notice is it seems to be the ads in web pages that kill the browser. I guess that flash is causing the problem? The android browsing experience leaves a lot to be desired.

I call it the Windows XP syndrome.
XP was zippity fast on a clean install, but add a few years into it of loading it with all kinds of applications, AV changes, system restores, repairs, etc.
and you get a XP that takes a good 2-3 minutes post startup to run, and it will slow down over heavy usage.
I also experience this with Firefox in Windows 7, that browser was a beast with all those add-ons and the only browser with a true Ad-blockers, but as Firefox approach version 13, it's become a slug and can't handle many tabs.

I have not noticed a slow down....yet. But I have disabled a lot of crap that seems to start on its own.
This device is now three weeks old or so and there is yet to find a glitch.
A little tweaking goes a long way.

The Zeus Rom also removes a lot of bloatware, as you said, don't underestimate how bogged down your system can become with all that stuff running in the background.

Would Android being Linux (I guess) be more subject to bugs and failures because it's RAM friendly and lighthearted.
In other words since Android seems less complex would its speed versus hardware cause cross links or file IO failures more readily?
I know Windows has driven me nutz for years...always wanted to try Linux yet never have.
What exactly will JellyBean do?

No problems here. Since last update mine is rock solid stable, and performance is quite good. Had chance to use heavily at a 3 day conference and it was great though battery is not as good as my tf101. Also had my first chance to spend some solid time with an ipad2(not new one) . Utterly worthless. It was soo limited and locked down. Performance was fine but not as good as my infinity. 4x3 sucks.
I'm wondering if those with issues have one or more bad apps installed, I know it's happened to me before. They run crap in background and are not optimized.

Lots of problems here as well. I had actually typed in great detail, all the issues I have come across and the damn browser force closed so I lost everything I typed. My tablets acting up really bad, so I'm gonna end it here. This tf700 is the prime with fixed wifi and a nicer screen... please let JB fix this or its going back to Amazon.... infinity tablet #2.... there won't be a #3 if JB isn't stellar!

The Linux kernel isn't the problem. I would even say that Linux is more stable than Windows.
Jelly Bean has the target to make Android as smooth as iOS devices.

JB will make only the transitions smoother, other than that, i don't think we are going to see any performance boost or at least decrease in lags and hickups. This is due to HW to some extent (imho) and yes, the crappy apps.
I can tell you right away that after removing the live wallpaper that i used as workaround for cropped wallpapers in portrait mode, my tablet is now much faster on home screens that it was before. I also went and disabled some of the Asus apps. I know there are probably some other apps that are running in the BG and should be removed, too, but i simply need them, so no options here.
It also seems that factory reset is helping for some people, so maybe i'll give it a try, too, right before the JB update.
I am still on system that came from the factory.
Of course I don't think the tablet is crap, cause it is not, it is great, but it really needs some gentle hands sometimes to get it up to speed.
There is one thing that makes me VERY angry sometimes, so angry that maybe someday the tablet will fly into the wall....
I have enabled the screenshot function of the back button. Well, sometimes, when i want to just go back, "fracking back!", it creates a screenshot, which makes a tablet even more unresponsive. Frack!

I was also having a lot of trouble at first with my Infinity. Then I did a couple of things. One, i got rid of the dual battery widget that I used all the time on my Prime; two, I deleted or disabled every unnecessary app I could find. There are a number of good forum threads that can tell you what to disable. I also settled on Apex Pro Launcher which now seems very stable after deleting dual batter widget.

Mine slowed down after a couple weeks which was very frustrating because I really liked it when I traded my Prime for it. I have moved away from Asus altogether now good luck with jellybean hope it works out for you guys

Buh bye!

I guess i made a big ****ing mistake again, First i got the infinity then i returned it to get the note 10.1 . I was raving and writing positive reviews on that tablet as it is truly a fast tablet, no force close , stereo speaker is loud with good definition then last night i picked up my ipad3 and started browsing , after an hour i went back to my note 10.1 thats when the problem starts as i can now see the how bad 1280x800 resolution is compared to my ipad3 or infinity. So i went back and returned the note for the infinity and now...... after......... couple ....of ....days.........it was ****ing laggy and keeps on force closing browsing is started to became painfully slow , typing is not fun as i keeps on skipping letters as the touch screen is not that responsive. I want to go back to the note but i guess i dont have the guts anymore to returned it again...... Now i'm stuck.
I think the reason why the note is faster is because of its low resolution and why the infinity is slow is because the tegra 3 is not capable enough to handle full hd.........

Thats not the only reason, Prime was lower resolution and that device was slow too.

Loading your tablet up with craplets will slow it down.
It's pretty obvious that if it is performing like you want initially after a fresh factory reset, but then after loading it up with stuff it slows down, then it is most likely the stuff you added, not the box itself. It's just like a windows box basically, as someone else noted. Windows machines are a wreck after a while with all the little DLLs, services, drivers, etc that muck up an installation over time. I really have gotten to where I settle on just one or two go to apps in each category rather than install and leave multiple redundant apps on the machine.
I also avoid "freemium" games like the plague. Those things are like user installed malware. They leave stuff running on your machine all the time, pop notifiers, etc.
An occasional reboot or cold boot might be a healthy thing to do, too, since depending on your system config, Android may not be aggressive about reclaiming memory, etc, and you don't want it to hit eMMC as hard since it is slow on the TFs.

My TF700, along with a few others I've seen post here, has been increasingly sluggish under JB compared to ICS, regardless of how many cold boots and complete resets are performed. In addition, I get frequent white screen crashes and complete reboots that happen under heavy use.
So, with that said, here are my questions from those of you with some experience:
1. Should we expect an update from the manufacturer that will address all of this within a short (month?) period of time?
2. Since it's official that CM will provide an "official" port to the TF700, how long does it usually take them to provide a fairly feature rich one (GPS, Microphone, etc support unlike the unofficial port in the development forums)?
3. If both #1 & #2 are >1 month, can you recommend a solution that provides all tablet features? The other JB builds I saw do not provide full features from what I could see, correct?

If you are unlocked, you can always downgrade to ICS .30, or a custom Rom like cleanrom.

1. ASUS are not quick. Given past performance I don't think there is a chance of seeing an update that will successfully deal with the sluggishness issues.
2. I don't think it will be too long until the first official CM10 builds are released (days/weeks rather than weeks/months). Looking at where they are in development at present I expect the initial releases to be pretty complete. However, until they are released and tested you never know what problems and bugs may be encountered.
3. Your best bet at the moment is CleanROM - its the stock rom with all the bloat removed and some other tweaks to improve performance. Having tried the stock JB release and CleanROM I will say that the performance of CleanROM is way better.

Reboots, white screens and freezes are not normal for this or any tablet.
Firmwares and roms won't fix this. Send it back and get one that functions properly.

actually, reboots and freezes are quite normal. There have been several posts about it since this device launched. I was a victim of this as well. Made me want to get rid of it. but after rooting and installing cleanrom, i have not had any issues.
Yes, the rom gets rid of the bloat, but with the new update, you have the option of keeping the bloat that you may want. I highly recommend rooting and installing this rom. It will feel like you purchased a new device.

Your experience is just one data point and all the other posts combined here are just an incredibly small subset of the entire install base, so, no, just because you experienced it does not make it "normal". IMHO, regular reboots and freezes are NOT normal in a properly functioning TF running compatible software (some android apps do suck and/or are not compatible with new OS versions).
So, in spite of your experience, I personally would NEVER recommend doing something that will permanently void the warranty and completely eliminate the possibility of returning it if the root cause is a hardware problem. Instead, I'd return it, if the new one does it too switch brands.
I'm glad for your happiness with the updated ROM but an unlock on an in warranty tablet that is behaving badly is fundamentally bad advice, IMHO.

well xda is not the only website where people talk about electronics. I have seen a great number of complaints about this device. And i agree, there could be a very large number of people out there who are happy with their devices and don't have these issues. But it still remains, there are issues.
I can suggest/recommend people to root/unlock their devices, whether they do it or not, thats totally up to them. Before doing so, they should know the risk involved.

I'll be completely honest on how I feel about the TF700. Before the JB update, the tablet was slow. After the JB update, the tablet was still slow! I love the concept behind the TF700, and it's a beautiful tablet. But, it really does just suck because of its I/O.

I really must just be lucky because I honestly have not experienced any of the lag or crashes that other people report. Yeah, transfer speed over USB is unusually slow, but it's still better than what USB 1.1 was
Honestly, from all that I've read, this tab is hit or miss. You will either have an absolute dream machine or you will have a nightmare. If you are #1, congrats and have fun with this beast. If you are #2 and it's too late to return it, try out all the roms and see which you like best. Even though the custom roms are fun on this tablet, I return time after time to just plain ol' rooted de-odexed stock and remove the bloat myself. This has consistently given me the best overall results

It sounds closed minded, but I don't think it's hit or miss. The I/O issue has run in the Transformer line up from the beginning. I was foolish to believe they would get it under control by the TF700. I love the tablet, I do, but its I/O is undeniably terrible. There's times when it runs flawless for me. But there other times where I can't even stand to use it. I haven't had a single freeze or reboot on JB, Just times of slow performance. If this thing had a better I/O, it would be the best damn tablet ever.
I'm really scared for the Vivo tab, it might have an I/O issue too. God forbid you have an I/O issue with Windows....

Not only is the i/o bad (usually code for slow random read/write), but the sequential read is also horrendous. It takes forever for this tablet to load.
The solution would be more ram or to mount the device on an external microsd with better performance.
That being said the infinitys all weve got for fhd tablets until the bew samsung nexus fhd tablet cominf out next year (which will probably be gimped because google wont allow external storage on nexus devices).

I never had any problems with my tablet on a stock firmware (latest JB). What annoyed me very much is the slugish performance.
Navigation between screens and applications is annoying. I often use google reader and adobe acrobat to read PDFs, and they were so bad.
I do also have samsung galaxy s3 which flies comparing to TF700. My gf has ipad3 which is uber fast too.
So, I've decided to try out CleanRom and so far it's good. It's definitely faster and more smooth.

I have my tablet now 3 weeks. After byuing it I was 4 days on ICS and then got the update to JB.
The speed difference is immense and I have no sluggishness at all.
Only thing I have is that 1 time it wouldn't come out of deep sleep (had to reboot) and had 1 spontaneous reboot since then.
Froze many bloat apps and that gave the tablet some air to breathe RAM wise.
But stock browser is very fast and last week I could compare it to an Ipad3 and speed is quite the same. It depends more on the Wifi speed available.
Opening apps is instantly and fast so no complaints here.
Strange that the experience of some users is totally different.
But let's say there are now 1 million Infinity's sold, a very minority have probs because (proven) people who have complaints will look for it on the internet and will start complaining there also.
But who has no probs will not come here, for sure the majority of users.
So do not magnify the probs more than needed and do not generalize them.
But for sure complain to ASUS asking for a solution depending of the prob by either replacing the defective unit or come quickly with an software update.

How would you grade this tablet?

I've had this tablet since Christmas, got it with the keyboard dock and a Poetic case for work (journalism) hoping that it would entirely replace my laptop, which was a beater since my other one broke. Since using it I've overall loved the experience, but I do have a number of gripes.
The Good:
- Keyboard is equally as impressive as any laptop I've used. Responsive, ensures that I can continue to be productive while on the go.
- Battery life is unreal
- Speaker quality equals or betters that of an iPad, hands down.
- For being plastic, the build quality of this thing is awesome.
- ASUS has been nothing but supportive, ensuring that my device is unlocked quickly and under warranty.
- Plays the occasional game well and loads them pretty quickly
- The USB and HDMI outlets, while I haven't used them extensively, are going to come in handy.
- Charges extremely fast
The Bad:
- I can never find the power button in tablet mode. It's ergonomically terrible. And when docked, there's no button to press to turn the screen on quickly (that I know of)
- Despite coming preloaded with JB, this thing lags worse than my HTC Sensation. It's not rooted, but out of the box it lags. Takes like ten seconds to open up Google Now for pete's sake.
- Browser crashes all the time
- Proprietary cable is way too short and proprietary cables blow
- Internet browsing is laggy and slow to load more often than not
- Trackpad on the dock is the worst on any keyboard I've ever used in terms of responsiveness and random touches
- Rooting seems complicated
- The screen is not as sharp or as bright as I expected
Overall: B+
It's more than I could ever expect out of a tablet, to be honest. I probably should have sprung for an UltraBook for my needs, but this will be fun in the meantime. This may be my first tablet, but I can assure you that every tablet I buy from here on out will come with a keyboard. It has given me a good idea of what to look for in a tablet and I really do enjoy using it over any other device I've owned aside from my phone. For all it's specs, performance isn't where it should be, but I have a sneaky suspicion once I root this thing there may still be hope for solving all this lag.
What would you grade this tablet? What are your likes? Dislikes? I'm curious to find out about everyone else's experiences with the 300, and perhaps some helpful advice. Thanks!

When stock I would say a 6/7 out of 10. Its slow, browser crashes and espesially after Jelly Bean update i decided to unlock and root cause it was a pain to use sometimes. Also alot of problems while typing. Whole sentences are suddenly gone, autocorrect is horrible and anyoing, and sometimes even freezes while im writig.
With Custom ROMs i would say a 8 out of 10. Alot faster and smoother than stock.

Imo, the screen is very good. Compared to TF101, colors are better and brighter.
Buying Quad Core cpu I expected, that EVERY game will run smoothly. I bought Dark Knight and ... zonk, lags everywhere. I thought my Tegra 3 is broken

ok so I agree 1000%. I rooted mine, installed cm10 (not 10.1 yet) along with untermensh's kernel and its freaking lightning fast. it was maybe a C- before. Now it is a solid A!
Even my critical impatient wife loves the tab now.

I guess the solution to everything is to root it (as usual). If it gets rid of some of the annoying lag then I'm all for it, because if there's one thing I value over any other feature, it's stability

yea. its sad that we need to void warranties to make the tab perform the way it should have when stock but it is what it is....

Are there any noob guides to root and install a custom ROM on this tablet? I think i may just have to do so to improve the performance as it's terrible at times. I'm on the latest jellybean update by Asus

Exactly what you need

I'd give this thing a 5 out of 10 on stock. Rooted and with agps flashed and apps to SD its a 11 out of 10. I run clean ROM 3.0.4 and unters 4.4.20 kernal and as I've said before it makes all the difference in the world on this machine. The screen is good but the infinity screen is better however I prefer this to all other tabs currently marketed except Samsung note 10.1 but the note isn't optimized for tegra games so all in all this one won me over

Does a custom ROM really make a big difference? This thing really does lag awfully sometimes on stock and i'm a bit skeptical that it can improve significantly

It makes so much of a difference on mine I could never concieve of loading the stock ROM again. The stock has serious I/o issues bud not to mention all the other crap. Now don't get me wrong there is a down side. On jelly bean u have to unlock so u lose your warranty and that's a risk. It is also a lot of work to install all the ROMs and patches and the first time on any device will scare the bejesus outta any man but when its done, at least for me, its a thing of beauty on this machine in particular. I'd did a lot of research before I got started and finally took the plunge. Course I've done this on several devices but every time is stressful lol. Good luck man for the benchmark scores on my machine just look at the poor androbench scores thread in this section. I just posted pics there that will show you how much of a difference it makes when you root and rom

P.S. you mentioned lag so I'll let you know browser to ram after you root takes care of that in browsing and as you can see from the screenshots in the other thread the I/o is fixed and or gone around after root and custom ROM installed.

I've been regretting this purchase since after 1 month of owning it, that why a few months ago I was pretty active on this forum asking questions but since the day I figured out this tablet is what I should not have purchased, I stopped browsing this forum.
I was so sad because I saved my money for months to buy this tablet and what I got wasn't what I expected.
Like you said, this thing lags like crazy, it's because of the I/O issue I believe. Games run laggy, cuz they need to read/write a lot. Copying 100MB takes 10 minutes. I waited for years for it to copy mmy music library to this tablet. Forget about browsing the Web,
I even thought this is an issue with android and I thought I will not ever buy an android device again, until my sister got the galaxy s3 and it's damn fast
Maybe I'll leave a review someday, but basically this tablet is very good, except for the fact that Asus put a cheap slow flash storage in it. If not, I'd rate it 8/10 if there's no i/O issue,
Asus has been known for putting slow flash storage in their devices from the tf201, tf300, even the flagship tf700, and even though the nexus 7 has a faster flash storage that transformers, it's still very slow compared to other tablets.

I have to agree with other comments here, the stock rom is a piece of crap. Not being able to browse on the stock browser WTF ? I've said this before but Asus REALLY needs to fix their stock rom. If the ROMS from here can make the tablet fly then why can't Asus do it?
I had my tablet for 6 months and only unlocked and flashed TWRP with Cleanroom in the last week. I've now used the tablet more in the last week than I had in the previous 6 months, it's made such a difference. I now enjoy using the tablet rather than wanting to throw it against the wall :silly:
I bought mine with the keyboard dock, it makes the tablet more versatile extends the battery life and with a wireless mouse is almost a notebook / netbook replacement.
I notice the OP wrote the proprietary cable is too short.... you can pick up a 2m cable on eBay or Amazon really cheap, mine was delivered last week. Though the proprietary cable does blow, from what I've read it allows the tablet to be charged quicker than a normal usb cable (please correct me if I am wrong).
Stock rom: 3 out of 10 (Slow, hangs, browser crashes.... piece of crap)
Cleanrom: 10 out of 10 (Everything works perfectly now)

Perhaps the wrong thread but what browser do you guys use on this ROM? I like stock ROM so so much but it doesnt work half the time. Like it doesn't load pages or the back button doesn't return me. Also it can use flash!
I'm gonna start to try use chrome but I like the progress bar. I tried dolphin browser but its not like a conventional browser, doesn't have a back button etc.
Firefox doesn't have an easy add tab button. Same with Opera, don't think its that nippy, hangs n lags.

I found Opera Mobile worked best on the stock rom

i use stock browser on cromi 3.0.4 it works exactly as it should with no lags and flash is smooth.

Much of the I/O issue is reated to the hardware present in the TF700 -- please read up on the issue since we have gone over this quite a few times. Short answer: no, it will not and cannot ever be fixed, but flashing a custom ROM alleviates many issues to a very acceptable degree. In another thread a user asking essentially the same question was rightfully advised to wait and see whatever new models may come available in the next few weeks to months. (Unless you clearly "need" the battery-powere dock of the TF700 and a FullHD sceen on the side, which would make the Transformer line your only viable option.)

That depends on the user. In my case it was tolerable, realizing the limitations 0f the hardware. I got around to rooting today.

The issue is not present on some versions of the tablet, I don't know what are the versions but please check the Asus Transformer infinity benchmarking video on youtube by "miniocpro". In this video the I/O appears to be good on Quadrant Standard actually a lot better than the ones on all infinitys i saw.

In my case only a minor nuisance, but that largely depends on personal preference/perception. There have been a few reports of the issues being perceived as "deal-breaking"...

I have never seen a post in here describing the I/O throughput of any Infinity as 'good'. Obviously, as always, your mileage may vary, but in general, it just is not that good.
@OP: I'd buy again, as far as the I/O issue is concerned, provided I could unlock the bootloader and flash a custom ROM (and possible data2SD) -- these seems to make the user experience a lot better.

I never really paid a whole lot of attention to the I\O complaining.
Not sure slow I\O was causing my initial disappointing experience with the Infinity.
My case the updates worsened the tabs performance...so I threw up my hands and jumped on the Cl-ROM\CROMi train.
I'm a firm believer that too many useless or poorly implemented apps are causing most of the sluggishness with a majority of new users.

I bought one today and it's awesome. Wow, the screen is unbelievable. Coming from the wifi Xoom, this thing is a beast. Very satisfied so far.

I'm not bothered by it at all. Sure, sometimes the browser seems to hang for a bit when loading a page. My SGS3 does the same thing... So does Firefox on my pc, for that matter. And it takes a whole whopping 0.2 seconds longer to swipe or load an app. I do a fair bit of rendering, understanding is half the battle. I can't be bothered by what I know to be logical. But actual, real lag? No. Never noticed it.

I also came from the Xoom. Hard to believe the incredible difference between the Xoom's crappy screen with lots of ghosting and this mega clear and crips display, huh?
I couldn't be happier with the tf700!
@OP: The I/O issue -if you really even consider that an issue- seems to disappear after having installed a custom ROM, eg. CleanRom. It's boosted the I/O benchmarks (not that I care about those) and more importantly, it makes this device bugless. I swear: not one hiccup in a very long time.
I would only recommend data2sd if you really feel that there is still some kind of issue, but I can't imagine that anyone still notices lag.

I've never given the Xoom a try, was it really that bad?

Life turned into a bit of a "well f*ck you too" moment. Mate of mine hit rock bottom and decided, as the idiot that he is, to spend the week drugged up to his eyeballs on cocaine. And aparently, I'm the only one he tolerates in that state. All good now, more or less.
