On T-Mobile & Needs new phone - General Topics

So I'm coming from the T-Mobile G2x and wondering what good phone I should get? Something fast, has ROMS, etc. Do you know of a phone getting released for T-Mobile? Should I wait till a new phones gets released? Let me know I can be patient. :good:

From what I've seen only the One S and SGSII are worth it atm.. T-Mobile usually releases a lot of new handsets during Q3

I wish good phones like the Attrix HD or the Razor Maxx from Motorola was on T-Mobile because I would really buy those phones. And wow Q3, that's supposedly when the ICS comes out for the G2x.

I have the amaze awesome phone if you like sense and stock otherwise don't get it. I'm wanting to upgrade but my recommendation is to wait.
1. T-Mobile aws bands are being upgraded to lte.
2. T-Mobile is refarming their 1900 band for hspa+ meaning you can bring almost any phone you want. Domestic and international. And the iPhone as well.
1. Is to be deployed by 2013 maybe complete 2014.
2. Is to be deployed by end of this year maybe complete 2nd quarter 2013
So you can either get something temporary or wait it out

Considering that you want to Rom and mod Motorola is the last company you want any part of. Grab up a Galaxy SII or a Nexus and be glad that you can get such goodness. I'd recommend that you look at the Sony Xperia P as well.

GS3 is current top of the line. I personally don't like it that much and think it's worth waiting. No idea what's next for T Mob but the next Nexus is always an option.

The fact that Moto and VZ find new ways to screw with us after every single update. Trust me, you do not want a new Motorola if flashing Roms is your thing. The Droid 2 and X are the last ones seeing heavy development. Check the available Roms for the Razr and then look at older Droids and newer HTCs and other phones on VZ. Heck, I think the S3 might have more Roms than the RAZR already.

SG3, Note, Galaxy Nexus (get from play store for $350 (until the injunction sets in again), sign up with $30/month 100min 5gb t-mobile prepaid, save $1000 over two years, win).
Next Nexus (with which you can implement the pre-paid plan) and next Note (which with you might not be able to) will also be coming out within a few months.

We know nothing about the next Nexus as of now. Only thing we've heard is that there may be multiple Nexus phones from different manufacturers. That's a may. And yep, phone decisions are tough. Once you accept that no matter what device you get it will be outdated within 4-6 months, you learn to not take it too seriously.

Thats true, and I accept it. But can I ask you guys do you guys prefer the 3 button (Back - Menu - Search)[I think] phones or the 4 button (Menu - Home - Back - Search)?
Because for some reason these nexus and new phones seem to come with the 3 button, and Im not a fan of it.

Personally, the new button arrangements don't make much sense to me. I prefer what my Sensation has: Home, menu, back, search (and in that order, too; I have never understood placing menu before home, it's the damn home button it should be first). I don't get the arrangement that phones like the One X have: back, home, recent apps. The only button I don't use on my Sensation is search, so I think the proper 3-button arrangement should be : home, menu, back. A recent apps button is pointless because I find that long-pressing home in order to view recent apps (like on my Sensation) works perfectly. Removing the menu button also makes no sense because it was a useful button.
The removal of menu was effectively based on Google's push to move away from it, which I find dumb. But it ultimately isn't that big a deal and even though I don't like the new button arrangements I wouldn't let that deter me from new phones.

New note is using a quad core exynos lte support as well.

I use the menu button a while heck of a lot more than I do the home key. Menu gives you options everywhere, including inside apps ; home exits to home or brings up recent apps. The menu key is probably more utilized for most users.

One thing I want to point out here: the play store edition of the Galaxy Nexus will work on T-Mobile 4G, and you'll get a bring-your-own-phone discount. And, it's development is perhaps the best possible on any android device
Not as much power as the GS3, and a bit smaller screen, but better software and a bit higher PPI.

How long will NS Last?

Its on Gingerbread and im sure it will get Ice Cream or whatever, will it get the one after that though? And what about even after that!
I just want a phone that can last me a long time (at least 2 years)
NS has everything I want and need, as long it has the latest updates im good, and I dont like to root and rom and stuff, I just want all stock stuff.
With the speed technology moves two years is probably about right for the life of a new phone. It will probably be dropped by Google long before it's discarded by the devs though.
My question would be whether the hardware will last the two years.

the nexus series last longer than regular android phones. So you shouldn't be too Worried.

Today's phones are like computers. It'll last as long as it does what you want it to do. Once you feel that your phone no longer can do what you want it to do, then thats when it has become personally obsolete and time to replace. Generally I would replace my phone every year, because it seems a new phone would release with a new feature that I would want to make my everyday communication needs much more efficient.

Probably quite a while.
I would assume the Ice Cream update would be the biggest leap so far, especially if its going to bring Honeycomb features to phones. (ie hardware acceleration, holograpic UI etc.)
And the Nexus One/S would probably the only phones to get the update for a while.
You should be worried when they stop support for the Nexus One first.

thats a minimum of a year away, IF the FCC even allows it. I would doubt they would do that to t-mobile users..........
Not to mention it would be a material breach of contract and allow millions out of a contract. Wouldn't be a very smart move IMO.

Hmm I've noticed that the Dev section isn't as booming as I thought it would be considering this is a Nexus phone. I'd assume that that's because the phone was only released on T-Mobile (and some other places in UK) until very recently?
Will the dev section pick up once the AT&T, Sprint and the Canadian carriers pick it up, or did people just decide to skip over the Nexus S for some reason? I'll assume it's the former.

Android Nexus 3 (Prime) on Ice Cream Sandwich

I know there are probably at least a dozen threads on this new phone where I could ask for speculation but after browsing them I decided I'd make a thread specifically on the release date. As many of you may know, there was recently a report by the Electronic Times in Korea that the new Nexus Prime would be coming in October with ICS, debuting alongside the iPhone 5 and iOS 5. There has also recently been a Samsung roadmap with device releases/specs detailed for the rest of the year, according to the roadmap the only Android phone running ICS is set to release in early December. On top of that, there was reportedly a Nexus Prime spotted at Verizon HQ. Obviously this data conflicts but both the roadmap and the electronic times seem to me to be decent sources and if it was indeed spotted at Verizon HQ, obviously Verizon will get the Prime or a version of the prime at release. My questions are:
1) Do you guys really think they are going to release the Prime to complete with the iPhone as many people are speculating or do you think it will release according to the current Nexus schedule which is usually around December?
2) Do you think multiple carriers will get the Nexus Prime/version of the Prime? If so, what carriers and do you think they will all get it immediately?
Again, I know I could have posted this thread in multiple places so please forgive me =]
I think the Prime will be released near the iPhne 5 launch maybe a month after.
I expect to see it across all the American carriers. T-mo will get first dibs, then sprint and verizon and you'll have to import for AT&T unless they make it one of their LTE devices for the year
Could you shed some light on the reasoning behind your carrier timeline? Why T*Mobile first? Ect.

I agree with our mate!
I'm just curious why Tmobile would get it first, people seem to think that ICS is being released early to compete with the iPhone 5 so you're assuming that the iphone 5 is definitely going to tmobile and that google/samsung are expecting a lot of consumers to switch to tmobile when it is released?

The previous nexus phones have been GSM, right? So it makes sense that, at least initially, GSM carriers will get this one first - however I don't doubt other carriers will get it eventually, if not right away as well.
If they really want to compete with the iPhone, it MUST be on ATT and Verizon...or else...it, uh, can't compete lol.

I think what Samsung/Google are doing are trying to steal the thunder from Apple by putting the release nearer to the iPhone 5. I've also heard that on September 1st Samsung are holding a mobile conference for their new handset. I mean, I know this isn't a Samsung device, it's Google's so they would announce it, but this phone is going to knock the socks off everyphone out there at present according to the specs.

The only real reason I have not is because of money. Those phones ain't cheap, and unless I have a real need for that phone (which I don't), its not really worth it to me to spend it. Also, my contract is up on father's day, so I will probably get a nice upgrade for cheap then. I can wait.

My upgrade is around the same time. If the GS III launch is anything like the GS II, it'll hit the states months after the rest of the world. I may buy a Galaxy Note and flash the radio that works with T-Mobile to tide me over until the GS III or something else comes along. Then I will have two awesome phones.

good for you. I am used to it... I was with Virgin Mobile before I came to T-mo and if you think T-mo is bad. *shudder* At least T-mo releases updates... In the history of VM there has been 1 update. 1 and only 1. To a outdated phone to an outdated os... So I personally can live with having a phone have 0 updates or go to it's end of life... There is always dev support.
Also people complaining of lack of dev support... There are lots of devs here compared to a lot of other phones...

[Q] Way to Delay Upgrade?

Hello everyone, I'm a longtime Sprint user, and am looking forward to my switch to Verizon very soon! I currently own an EVO 4G LTE, and am taking a look at what phones I should get when I switch companies. The best available phone right now appears to undoubtedly be the SIII.
I have heard that there are some pretty awesome phones on the horizon, and I would love to get them (HTC's apparent phablet, Razr Maxx HD, etc.). However, I really don't think I can wait until November because I can't possibly tolerate Sprint anymore and their ridiculous lack of coverage in my area (they told me the towers are being upgraded for the past 7 months).
So my question is this: is there any way to delay my upgraded phone price so that I can use it once these newer phones are released? In other words, can I use another phone or do something else in order to not use that contract upgrade until November, even if I sign up for their service this week? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you would just go get the SIII if you were in my position, that's useful input too. I love the phone, I just feel like it will be "dated" in a month. Seems like the worst possible time to buy... I'm in a pickle.
Thoughts?
I don't know the answer to your question but I just switched to Verizon from sprint and got the S3. Waiting on it in the mail now. I don't think u can do what u want but im not sure. Hopefully someone can answer it for sure

You would have to purchase a phone at full retail price. Then you could get the pro rated price later.

This is an interesting idea - so I would need to find a Verizon-capable smartphone on Craigslist as cheap as possible, and then use the "upgrade" later when I want?
Another option would be do the pre paid route until you find a phone you want, then jump on contract.

I had not thought of this option yet, although the thought of going pre-paid doesn't appeal to me for some reason. I doubt my wife would go for it either. I have heard that pre-paid is getting more popular though - any suggestions for going pre-paid if I do explore that route? There's so many options out there now...

Go to the galaxy nexus forum and look at the threads that say prepaid service guides or something similar. One of them says "rule your plan with..." they all talk about the best prepaid plans for the money.
Here is one of the more popular ones http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
Obviously you don't have to do it with a nexus, you can use one of the prepaid ****ty phones. They just talk about the plans there. When I read it a long time ago most of them involved getting the prepaid phone and then switching out the sim card so you could just chill with the original phone until something interesting comes out on Verizon.

Wouldn't that be essentially the same thing as buying a phone and going month to month on Verizon until getting the phone he wants at a pro-rated price and contract?

Only difference would be pre-paid may be cheaper, if I'm reading your message correctly.
Also, thanks for the quick replies everyone! I look forward to joining this community soon. Looks like I'll be getting an SIII this week. If it was just me, I'd employ one of these ideas you guys gave me. But since my wife is included... I'm gonna go the simple route and get the SIII, which was equivalent to my current phone anyway (EVO 4G LTE). Seems like it has the dev support to last the two years like my old EVO 4G did (it can run JB now - amazing). Plus the extra RAM future proofs it a bit. I don't game, so I don't need quad core I doubt. The S4 chip is a beast anywho.
Thanks again guys! See you in the forums soon!
Oh one last quick question: any issues I'll have rooting and unlocking this phone? I've only owned HTC and been with Sprint, so I'm unsure of how to do all of this. I hear Verizon is not very friendly about unlocking phones.

It was just a pain in the ass to get it unlocked to begin with. Since it's been figured out it's simple. Bookmark the guide in my sig, Droidstyle did a good job about laying it all out.

The bootloader can be unlocked easily, obtaining root is a simple one-click affair, and VZW has never been friendly about anything but your open wallet. Congrats on the new phone and carrier switch.

Okay that sounds good, thank you!
I was concerned mostly because with my phone, only the non-updated ones can be rooted and unlocked right now. Since I had mine since launch day, my original bootloader was able to be hacked and exploited. New phones bought today have different bootloaders that have patched the explored holes. HTC can be evil that way. I know Samsung is more dev friendly, but I wanted to make sure there were no stipulations like with my phone where I would be screwed if I bought a new one now.

If you are going to wait 3 weeks you might as well wait for the note 2. Just my two cents.

There's still no release date on the Note 2 is there?
Plus I'm not sure a phone that large is for me. I'm getting the Note 10.1 soon, so do I need a phone that's a tablet too? I'm not sure. Plus I won't pay over 200 for a phone. I'm guessing the Note 2 will go for 300 or more.

It wouldn't have to be a smart phone. Buy a cheap flip phone or something. However there is always something Coming soon so you may find yourself with that cheap phone for a long time

is ICS dead?

I know HTC has said 500 times or more "ICS is on its way"
but its like 6+ months later than they said
do you think we will see ICS for our T-Bolts?
ive read a million articles, and cant find a recent-ish one
thanks a ton everyone!
and by the way can I have some opinions about the DNA or Galaxy Note 2....one of those bad boys are my next upgrade and to me they are pretty equal, but opinions would be welcome and helpful

I'm doubting an official release of ICS for the Thunderbolt. I'm hoping for HTC to release more sources so that we can just build it ourselves.
And as far as those two phones go, get the DNA. Or wait until February and get the HTC M7.

the only downfall with the dna in my opinion is that HTC makes it
now im not a htc hater, in fact they are the company that make me jump on the android ship, and ive loved them until I had the thunderbolt, rezound and incredible 4g
with the lack of updates from HTC im affraid to get the DNA, the best comparison is the droid razr and rezound; the razr has 4.1 ready to roll out in early Q1 2013 (there was an "accidental" ota update a few weeks back that gave a few hundred uses android 4.1, and motorola confirmed android 4.1 in early Q1) where the HTC rezound may get 4.1 but it will prolly be around june- and I honestly think thats on the early side.
but If HTC shows better upgrades ide jump over there to the DNA right now
Well if it makes you feel any better. The DNA already has sources out for it and it had them released the first couple of weeks of its release. It is very unlikely that a phone with the power that the dna has won't get updates. The problem the thunderbolt has had the whole time is dual core phones were right around the corner when it was made and HTC blew it off for more powerful hardware.

Oh and on another note. Verizon is partially to blame for the lack of support and ics on this device. They keep stonewalling the update because I think they know we still have unlimited and they want us off of it. If they give us the update then it is unlikely we will upgrade anytime soon. You also can't forget that this phone was the first from Verizon that has the svdo capability which the source to that has been kept under lock and key for quite some time now. I think that Verizon is protecting that info because they may resurrect it later on. This and the rezound are the only two phones that are able to talk and surf even on 3g. The others that are able to do this use volte (voice over lte) which only works with 4g.

As much as I hate using my tbolt everyday....I will be holding on to the tbolt until the next nexus phone is released for Verizon. I've had an update available for a while and would gladly go get a S3 but the tbolt experience has pushed me to the point of...nexus or nothing from here on out.
Never realized how slow my TB is until I got a Nexus 7.
Anyway, I'm waiting for either the Galaxy S4 or the next Google/Moto phone. Maybe the HTC M7, depending on when the others are available.

I don't know why everyone insists on blaming HTC for lack of updates on the Thunderbolt.
It's not entirely in their hands, or I believe we would have had it long ago.
The biggest issue is actually the network itself and is what's held up many updates for various devices, in my opinion.
If you think a Nexus on VZW will make things different, THINK AGAIN.(I urge you to read the link)
No matter how good or common, or baseline a device may seem to be, it will never make the carrier any better.
Verizon just plain old SUCKS at getting updates out.

and it wont change. ever. they have moved away from customer support because they don't need to worry about happy customers if they already have them tied down for two years. and all those issues people have disappear when its time to upgrade and the consumer is happy again. then the cycle begins again

thanks for the feedback everyone!
I know HTC isnt just to blame, BUT if you look at apple for instance (sorry for bringing them up) they can do what they want with their phones, and the carriers can pretty much shove it if they dont like it.
now my question is this, why can apple do what they want (ex no bloatware, and updates whenever they see fit) and android companies (HTC, LG, Samsung, And even Google with the case of a nexus) cant?
I left my Thunderbolt for a Galaxy Note II and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect size for me, and it still manages to sit comfortably in my pockets. The phone overall is excellent, but the two features that stand out are the stylus and the battery life.
I did not consider getting the DNA because it has an inferior screen (resolution aside,) and the battery life has been reported to be horrendous. I would say either the Note II or the GS3 are both very safe bets if you are looking to get a new phone.
As soon as my upgrade was up, I left my HTC Thunderbolt for a Samsung Galaxy Note II. I've waiting way too long for HTC or Verizon to update this phone. I've read article after article and posted on HTC's Facebook pages and no response. They've lost me as a customer (HTC, not Verizon; I'm not giving up my unlimited data!).
I suggest the Samsung SIII or the Samsung GNII. I love my Note II and think the Thunderbolt is soooooo tiny after using it (just took a look at my Thunderbolt 5 minutes ago to see what I can do with it without any service on it).
While I'm not ecstatic about HTC, I feel like Verizon is to blame here. Just look at how their policies are for everything else.
For all of you crowing about unlimited, you realize you are paying a monthly rate which includeds a phone subsidy right? Except, you get no phone. It's like "How about you pay full price for a phone, and then pay a higher rate as though you actually got a phone for free." Ooooo sign me up!
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but Verizon is getting lots of blood from you for the sake of unlimited. If you have the money, I guess its one thing, but OTOH, if money werent an issue, you wouldn't care about overage fees.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.

I have two phones with unlimited data on my plan and if I took the share everything plan I would end paying $40 more a month and get less data than I actually need. Plus I still wouldn't get one of those phone subsidies you're talking about since I'm not eligible for upgrade for a while so I would definitely pay full retail for a phone before I lost unlimited. Also there are plenty of phones I could buy used that are excellent for half the price of retail or better.

Just like other guy stated I would be paying more if I went on share everything plan I don't use a crazy amount of data but 13-20 GB a month is where I sit. I am hoping Google releases a phone every year like the upcoming xphone so I can buy it off the play store, if they are in stock that is. But I will hold onto my unlimited data as long as I can cause their share everything plan is a joke, $40 for a smart phone access fee equals $29.99+$9.99 which is what we were already paying to buy the unlimited or 2gb or 4gb all they did was slap a two cent raise and hoped no one would notice. I noticed jerks!!!!

HTC deserves some blame too - it seems like they gave the update to Verizon around September, which is still ten or eleven months after ICS was released.

That is true but how can we expect a company to push out an ota for a one year old device that probably 95% of the purchasers moved to a different device. We should all be happy that they got their crap together enough to give us this last one.
