HOT - Asus Transformer TF700

its your device getting hot?

It got warm to the touch after downloading and installing over 150 apps in a row. But I gave it some time to rest and it cooled off. It never got hot enough that it was uncomfortable like a laptop. But yes it was noticeably warm.

Not really...
The Acer A700... THAT bugger got HOT. The TF700 has not gotten anywhere near that.

My infinity will only get 'warm' to the touch after an hour or more of gaming. It heats up on the upper-left back of the device (presumably were the T3 SOC is located) but nothing that even approaches the heat of the A700 or anything that I believe is a dangerous temp. One perk of the aluminum plate design, seems to act somewhat like a heatsink as well.

Hot
The Infinity gets hot on the left side in landscape mode when using IPS+, otherwise no problem!

yep, while i was downloading my apps, i felt it get warm. but after i was done, it went away.

Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary so far, but then I do not game on the TF700. I have a desktop for that. Normal mobile use did rise the temperature noticeably, except indeed for the installations running after either inital setup or factory reset -- I ran that while reading a book on my bed, the TF700 standing in its dock beside my pillow. That's the only moment of heat buildup I've noticed so far.

I've seen one running at 74C (in doors without A/C) while on a hot summer's day (36C) here in Taipei.
And 66C also during a hot day, generally when it's at temp above 66C I don't really want to touch the left part of the back cover...
It feels rather uncomfortable to hold it in your hand.

Same thing here, when there's lots of activity, it'll only get warm in that top left corner. I'm not complaining...my phone gets much hotter than that, much less my laptop

Yes this device can get to over 78C while watching a full HD video. It'll utilize full processor power and decode video for playback.
That is when hardware acceleration isn't available for certain codecs, like VP8.

Go check out my A700 r&do thread, for temperature benchmarks from a comparable tablet. The TF700T is just fine in comparison.

Well no need to root and no need to stress test if we only wanted to see what temp it will go up to.
The ambient temp is around maybe 27-28C since there's no fan in the tablet, all heat has to dissipate through the back shell.
All you need is stock player, stock FW, and a VP80 1080P video file, yet I've seen it (System tuner) reporting 79-80C after 1-3 minutes into the video.
So not much to compare between devices, the source of the heat problem is processor itself.
There's nothing you can do about it, until they upgrade to a more advanced silicon fabrication process such as 22nm.
Interesting temperature range -40 to 85C (but it's for another product, and lets assume Arm CortexA9 is able to operate at this extreme heat of 85C)
If you'll look up in google "cortex-a9 max temperature" first link.
And when it does over heat (don't know if there's any thermal protection) obviously the processor doesn't throttle against temperature which means it might smoke(?).

[Q] Screen Defective??

I finally opened the new eee pad today. It sat on my desk for almost 4 days. SO I open it, and turn it on. Immediately I notice small pixel lines moving from bottom to top on about 1/4 of the screen. If we were to hold the screen in the panoramic way and cut it into for slices, it would be slice 2 which has these lines going up. I really hope its not terminal as its seems to be getting better with usage. Im charging it now and will try using it some more later but something is telling me this sucker is defective and that perhaps the screen ribbon cable is nicked or not making contact properly.
Anyone else have this issue? This blow. I had 3 tablets in total and I sold the rest. I ended up keeping the faulty one. FAIL!
BTW its more prominent on darker screens. But at times its not. Its weird. On a black screen you dont see it but if its slightly lighter and I mean SLIGHTLY, you will see the lines. When the screen is fully lit , lets say the water wall paper with the cube, you see no lines. It looks like line artifacts.

Yeah looks like its not good. I was thinking it might be a "driver" issue and an update might help. But Asus pulled the update so thats a no go.
Taking a pic is not easy since its very small lines. I will try.
I might just go grab an iconia for the time being and compare the two. I know that, Im not going to see a replacement for some time. First batch releases ALWAYS has issues as you can see from the numerous threads up on weird issues here and there.
Its weird, it does it at random. Been clean about 20 minutes. Maybe it will sooth out

Maybe it's karma that's messing you up... but hope you get your screen fix though, such a shame
mine's been doing the same thing only in the last couple days, it seems it only does it for about 15 seconds occasionally when i first turn it on after it being in sleep mode for a while... it seems once it warms up it goes away, i haven't taken it back because it would be hard to explain when it is never consistent as to when it does it.
I bought gumbis, after about 5 min it goes away completely, even faster on white screens. It has to be the firmware, the original build 325

I've got the same issue on mine, appears to be on darker screens with deep blues... not so much on black screens or white.
Please see the attachment for where on the screen it is appearing. I may be able to capture it on video but the flicker is literally a few miliseconds and it's gone. It's only occuring on screens that are the "Android Setting" background. I've watched some video, viewed other pictures and backgrounds with varied colors and not seen the flicker.
Doesn't appear to be a software issue. I was able to use the screenshot tool and tried to capture it quite a few times and wasn't able to. I may end up having to RMA it already, just got it out of the box.

I hope its not. Mines not in the same spot, its more to the left. I am hoping its just a glitch in communication to the display. Screen capture is capturing it before its displayed I would imagine. In waiting until a FOTA. What is RMA anyway?

Anyone hear anything else about this? Asus tells me up to 21 business days for the RMA and they don't offer advanced RMAs. If I can avoid having to wait an entire month to get a replacement I plan to. Newegg tells me it'll 14 business days or a refund. Disaster of a launch... the Asus "tech" I spoke with didn't know what the TF101 was, kept asking me if I uninstalled Windows 7 to install Honeycomb.
Im having this same problem, really frustrating cuz i was so excited to get it, and the screen is glitching out =/ really don't wana send it back

[Q] Eee Pad Slider vs. Transformer

With the Eee Pad Slider coming "soon" according to Engadget, is anyone thinking of getting the Slider instead of the TF? Personally, I think the TF is still a better option because of the keyboard dock USB ports, SD slot and extra battery life, but I'm really beginning to like the Slider too.

Is the keyboard always attached to the tablet? the article don't explain that part.
If it does, then the TF is better for me since there is the option to use as tablet only or netbook.
Still, the slider looks nice.
No touchpad so no

Such a large sliding device is a little ambitious in my mind, have you watched any of the hands on vids from CES? I saw a guy open one and he had to be real careful to apply even pressure on both sides while sliding. I think the slider is a little too bulky, not that the tf is small but you can detach if you want. Just got mine in today and liking it so far.

Good point. Plus, it's missing the keyboard shortcuts. Plus, one of the nice things about the dock is that it protects the screen when it's closed. The Slider has no screen protection.
The slider is cool, but I personally prefer the detachable dock approach. That way when you are actually using it as a tablet you drop the bulk added by the keyboard, the slider will always be a bulky device even when you have the keyboard closed. In all honesty though I'm still in the honeymoon phase with my Transformer so that may sway my decision a little. Pricing will be a huge factor I think, if they can get the slider somewhere between $500-$600 it will do very well.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
the slider really is a cool device and a cool concept, but it's not really that practical.
With the transformer you can lose the keyboard when you want, and then dock it when you need it. Also means you can carry it around without having to worry about the screen getting destroyed.
and as it's been said. 2x USB ports and trackpad. good enough reason right there.
how about $449

doesnt the touchscreen render the touchpad at most a secondary input device, at the very least, useless? i have the dock with my tf and i mostly turn off the touchpad since i have the tendency to touch with when typing, causing inadvertent movement of the cursor.
I don't need a signature.

quite the opposite for me .... when i have the keyboard attached i find myself using the touchpad much more than the touchscreen ..... seems awkward to reach over the keyboard ..... of course my attitude might change over time but this way at least i have the choice

+1 When I first saw both devices, I wanted the weight advantage of using just the tablet i.e. 680g for just the TF vs 886g for the Slider!
and I'm sure you won't get the 16hr battery life on the slider
Another (small) point to make is that the angle of the Slider's screen cannot be adjusted to get rid of reflections etc like the transformer can.....
The article says the Slider will use the Atom Z670 processor instead of Tegra 2. Any advantages to this?

Assuming you can comfortably keep it on your lap with that form factor. From my lap height and with the screen that close to the keys i think i would be poking at the bottom of the screen edge a lot. Interesting design, but it seems a bit awkward overall.

depends, the transformers dock makes it alot heavyer and thicker, if the sliders keyboard is ultra light and thin i could see it playing a huge part in the tablet world. and since there isnt a mouse pad u dont have to reach nearly as far to get to the screen to scroll.

All Black pixels are red -- hardware issue?

Not entirely sure this is a good place to post it, but I was going to fly on an airplane, read a few pages of a PDF at the airport, got on the plane, then went to turn my EEE Tablet back on after takeoff, and the entire screen looked red-shifted:

It seems all black pixels are red, though other colors are more or less okay.
I'm at a loss for what it would be. Is that a hardware problem or a software problem? Going into recovery, though, everything was also red; a friend of mine said it was probably a bad cable.
Does anyone have any advice, or has seen something similar? I'd feel really silly if I restored to stock, sent it in, and it was just some setting on an obscure settings page I accidentally changed.
Try the force power off method (10-12sec power button hold). If still getting the issue try a hard reset from the android settings. If it still does it, it's a hardware issue and you'll need to return or RMA it. Could be quite a number of things causing this strange issue. Bad cable connection, overheated gpu, glitch in the matrix, etc.
EDIT: just noticed you said 'restore it to stock'. Could also be a dodgy rom you installed. So yeah reflash a stock one.
Wow.. that's bizarre. Seems like it's a hardware thing to me .. try doing a factory reset? Do you have any accessibility related applications installed?
You mentioned it happens in recovery, what about when booting? The first Asus screen?
If so, its most likely hardware. But still try a stock flash
You didn't by any chance subject your tablet through any magnetic equipments at the airport did you?
Anyway, a search with Google with the keywords "red pixels black background" gave general results that the graphics processor has malfunctioned. You may have to get an RMA for your tablet.
Looks like a magnet got it to me.....
maby the xray machine fukkd up the sensitive ips, or maby the pressure change. this is the first ive seen of this
Did you go through the metal detectors with it before handing it over to be xrayed?
possible multiple stuck pixels?
try looking for an app to "unstuck" the pixels.
Or try youtube(Search fix stuck pixel video or something like that) and play a video in full screen. run it a few times and maybe itll get those suckers to light on and off and eventually fix it.
good luck
Speaking of airports..
Never traveled with a laptop/tablet. Do you HAVE to submit your device through the xray machine, and if so, is it a potential risk to the unit?
It's either the GPU output or the cable. It's hardware. It's broken. It's not magnetized (that's dumb-it doesn't happen to LCD) nor are those stock pixels. If it happens outside of the OS, it's not software.
RMA

It's clearly stated on TF manual:
There are three main types of airport security devices: X-ray machines (used on items placed on conveyor belts), magnetic detectors (used on people walking through security checks), and magnetic wands
(hand-held devices used on people or individual items). You can send your Eee Pad through airport X-ray machines. But do not send your Eee Pad through airport magnetic detectors or expose it to magnetic wands.

Manual schmanual. There is nothing in this device that is sensitive to the magnetic field emitted by the metal detectors at the airport.
If it had a hard drive or a CRT screen, then maybe.

[A510] Some issues and sharing my 2 month experience

Hi guys. Two months ago, I got the A510. Sold my GT 10.1 and bought this. I am satisfied on the overall. Now let me share my 2-month experience with the tablet:
1) The two issues that I have faced out-of-the-box have not been resolved via an OTA. Those are namely a less-responsive-than-normal screen (even at high) and also heating on the lower right side.
The screen responsiveness is still a pain in the ass. More often than not, I need to tap twp/three times for input to register. Also, the responsiveness is ALMOST zero when placed on a flat surface. I have come to live with the heat issue. While I can feel it, it doesn't bother me anymore.
2) The tablet has become slow. It almost feels like a Honeycomb tab now. Apps launch slow, scrolling between homescreens is sluggish, browser has become slow....can't believe it. I have got around 30 installed apps currently on my tab, and I don't think that is too much, is it?
3) Lots of crashes and FCs while using apps/games. Yea, this has become worse lately. Every other game I play, the screen starts to flicker...any reason why? This is not limited to one or two games. Also, apps FC for no rhyme or reason.
4) How can I take screenshots? I am a game reviewer, and in most of the recent games, using the screenshot app from the Ring doesn't work. All it produces is a black screen. Is there any way to physically take screenshots? Power + volume buttons doesn't do it for me.
Thanks! Ask me any questions if you want about the tablet.

1) you can buy a case to avoid the heat issue. It's really work for my device.
2) sometimes the tab would become a little bit slow, but i think it's fast overall. Maybe you can do a factory reset or wait for the JB update.
3) As for me, just few apps crashed due to the wrong screen resolution; games crash may caused by some reason ( it needs network n sync access, data packets isn't support to youe device or sth else ), but the flicker issue is really existed in my device. I've met around 10 times flicker during 4-month use time.
4) My screenshot from Ring works fine. Have u tried other screenshot apps?
Sorry for my bad English.

I agree that your hands won't feel it, but wouldn't that further trap the heat inside the A510?

i don't think so, the heat can go through the plastic cover, no problem for the case.
[ no case ]: the heat makes u uncomfortable after playing games for a long time.

If the case trap the heat inside the A510, the tab maybe misbehaved, ( such as reboot ) but i haven't met the issue after putting the case.

I have been using a Transformer since the original. I just don't understand how someone can not love these things. I go from furiously typing notes, documents, and spreadsheets at work conferences to taking pictures of slideshow presentations to surfing the web, to watching movies, reading books, hooking it up to the TV in the hotel to stream what *I* want to watch.
I am a big fan of instant gratification and I do not believe there is another series of devices on the market that give these to me. Sure, I can probably do most or all of those things with another device, but no where near as seamlessly and efficiently.
Asus has the fastest update. That's the no 1 reason I go for the infinity. I think galaxy tab 10.1 just got their update to ICS while the transformer OG and prime got updated long long time ago
The stock calculator looks exceptionally well on an FHD screen.
Boots fast
Good video camera
My wife on my wallpaper in full HD . Yeah baby!!
Asus is basically an OEM company that doesn't have the raw marketing muscle of apple or the hardware monopolies of Samsung. It lives and dies by the quality of its products and I've been happy so far with all of my asus products. The Prime did have a lot of issues but I believe it was simply too ambitious a device and Asus did its best to fix issues.
The fact that they make the Nexus 7 too sealed the deal for me. Who else is going to get ICS faster on tablets than asus?

I think you mean Jellybean. ;^)
For me, the screen is sooo beautiful. Also, I'm actually floored by the incredible battery life I'm getting with the keyboard dock connected. I literally take it off the charger at 5:30 a.m., use it heavily all day (assorted activities, screen on a great deal of the time), and only once did I need to charge again before midnight. Most of the time I still have more than 60% each left in tab and dock when I got to bed.
I really haven't experienced lag or any of the I/O issues some reported. My TF700 is flawless. I really love it.

The camera quality is great! Even though prime had the same camera, both of mine took ridiculous quality pics. Worse by far than my cheap ass 3 mp phone. I'm going camping this weekend, and NOT taking my stand alone camera since my Infinity takes such beautiful shots.
I'm still playing with my new purchase and getting the necessary apps installed. I'm finding a few quirks with the interface and the touch sensitivity is a little different from the Galaxy Tab 10.1. My screen has very minor light bleed around the edges. Not is pristine as the Tab 10.1 screen but not distracting either, so I'm keeping my Infinity.
The good is expansion, expansion. Two card slots and a full USB with the dock plus a keyboard. I had to use a USB hub with the USB dongle along with a card reader, mouse, and keyboard with the Samsung. A little cumbersome for a tablet. USB Ethernet works right out of the box, no driver installs or rooting. All of my USB sticks and memory cards work. The external hard drive I have is detected but it is formatted NTFS. All I have to do is move the stuff off and reformat exFAT so I can use on both the Infinity and PCs.

The infinity has an extra lens, and f2.2 aperture, but a much better camera indeed
