[Q] [BUG] Special characters in sms makes it more expensive?? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
Im from Portugal and we use special characters when writing like "à ã é" etc..usually we can use 160 characters per sms but for some reason if we use those special characters some bug happens that reduces characters to 60 per sms!!(or something like that). That almost triples the cost of the message. Now wtf is this? How can google let this happen? Is there a way around it?i tried gosms but it does not have an option to disable special characters. My girlfriend has a galaxy S2 and it is on stock rom modified by Vodafone Portugal and she can use those special characters and the bug does not happen. So i assume that vodafone has changed something. I am on 4.0.4 (not official, i flashed it from the nexus s android development)
Any help?

I'm currently on my G2(gingerbread) and just tried this. They all still count as one character. Never noticed this on my nexus though. If you don't get a response by the time I get home, I can check from the nexus to be sure

It's not a bug. It's the way the characters are being "translated".

I am using the modified mms apk from our nexus s section but what the app does is use "e" instead of "é". It sucks that i cant write correctly. On my girlfriends phone(stock, as mentioned earlier on first post) she can use special characters normally. Isnt there a way to keep using special characters instead of them being converted to normal characters?

SMS sending problem when exeeding 160/70 letters

Hi all,
donno if some other guys faced this problem. when im sending sms longer than 160 letters the message is not sent still im charged for one sms as being sent but actually the sms was not sent and it will remain in the draft box :SSSS
plz can someone tell me if im doing something wrong here!
guys????? where are the brains?
It could be yours that's missing.... disable the unicode messages as on ALL PHONES AVAILABLE TODAY (and tomorrow)
oh im sure u think u have a brain too, if i wanna disable the unicode how can i send sms later in other than english??????? and im sure it doesnt have anything with the prob im talking about.
but thanx for using ur brain for such a CLEVER comment.
AND UR A SENIOR MEMBER .... WAAAAW
Sending SMS in unicode means you get 70 characters, because of "special" language specific characters like the hungarian öőüűéáóú....
Sending SMS in "normal" means you'll lose all the special character, thus you'll get something like this oouueaou...
There's no way around it, not on regular phones, not on SmartPhones, nor on WM.
@ wesram: Just out of curiosity, what are you sending via SMS? Love letters? Literature? Books?
I use unicode (because I need letters like čćžšđ) and I never need more than 70 letters in SMS.
For longer stuff I use e-mail... or call other person.
SMS = Short Message Service

wawww thats new, this is the first time i know that u cannot send more than 1 sms (160/70) u sould contact the operatrs and tell them this brilliant idea.
and thanx for the lesson about unicode. but still till the moment i dont think u got what i mean from the beg. !!!!!
the problem is when the characters exceeds 160 or 70 the message is not sent. and yes it works on all the other phones )) try to test it if u can afford to lose credits )

wawwwwwwwwwwww thats clever tooooooo,
i wonder did u get it urself or searched for it over the net ??? sms=short message service )))
if it was only that u can send 1 sms only (160 or 70) then why in the hell they let u write more than 165/2 or 76/2 and even u can send up tp 5 sms in one shot only.
and yes beleive it or not some people can send more than 1 sms and they can afford it, if u cant i think it will be ur own problem and i can send u some credit ))))
Standard question... Hard Reset?

SlideIT autospace option

SlideIT is always placing a space between words or, more accurate, in front of all words. Only the first word in a text gets away without a space before it. But, if I write the first word in a text, delete it to replace it with another word, it will create a space and the word will be all small letters!
Example:
Hi it's me!
(now, if i want to replace the word "Hi" with "Hello", I'll go back, delete that word only, and it turns out like this:
<space>hello it's me!
(a space in front of the first word, and its all small letters)
Also, in my language (norwegian) there is a lot of words that are combined by two words, but SlideIT doesn't allow me to enter two words without a space between them, unless i go back and delete the space myself.
Well, easy solution: Go to options and de-select the Automatic space option! Yeah, thats the problem right there. I've already tried a bunch of times, but it doesn't change anything! The spaces keep appearing no matter what!
I've already emailed Dasur, and here is what I got:
Dear Sven Erik
We will check this issue,
Can you tell me if it append aso in Note an Word application ?

I answered YES to both apps, but still no answer.. (Sent on April 12th)
So, is anyone else having this problem?
Any solutions?
SlideIT looks nice and is nice to use but it has lots of little annoying bugs like the one you highlight here. The killer for me was the correction issue with HTC Messaging. I emailed Dasur suggesting they change their editing to the method Swype uses where you can place the cursor anywhere in a word to change it to something else using the suggestion system. With SlideIT you need to highlight the entire word which can't be done in HTC Messaging. As a result, any changes when composing text messages means the word has the be deleted and retyped in it's entirety.
As a result I'm still using Swype until these problems are resolved.

Norsk og tysk har mange likheter! (Er det riktig?)
I have the exact same issue: In German, many words are combined to create longer words as well and because the automatic space option is not working, it is not possible to enter them without having to remove the spaces inbetween manually afterwards. I also contacted Dasur and they sent me an answer thanking me for the feedback... But nothing has happened since! Otherwise SlideIt is awesome!
talk to them on their facebook page, they may be a bit more responsive there.

Yup, Norwegian is part of the German language tree
I sent Dasur a new mail yesterday, and again they reply with questions. I answer them, and guess what? No replies...
Same problems with dutch language here. I also searched for a solution and sent an e-mail but no response.
I got my response from Dasur now, it seems like the auto space option is only ment for ABC-mode:
It's not a bug,
We think that in slide mode* you write word after word
and not try to add word to word (in most languages you can't combine words)
my suggestion to you is to save the long words and to slide them in one slide
In the next version we will offer to disable the auto space in the slide mode too.
Great Day,

But that sucks! Sliding really long words with one pass is very inconvenient! The margin for errors is far too big! And it would be such an easy thing to implement! Come on!
Oh well... We'll see what the next version brings.
I just realized that the auto space option makes no sense if it is only ment for the abc mode, as you enter all letters and spaces manually. so as a reply to the mail I received earlier (see my previous posts) i had to reply:
Hi,
So what you are saying is that auto space option can only be turned off in abc mode? Is there even auto space in abc mode? How does auto space work in abc mode? I am sorry, but I cannot seem to make any sense of this...

I agree, v4.1.0.3 has been out for quite a while now so i hope im wrong but i think it will still be a wihle before a newer version is released.
As mentioned, it actually does respond faster than Swype but Swype is much more finger friendly, has less bugs, its just a smarter layout for editing etc.
SlideIT has great advantages though like the abbreviations etc so if they can just tweak it a little, it will be better than Swype. Needs skins as well, very plain unfortunately.
New mail received!
Okay, i still cant seem to figure these guys out...

[Bug] User dictionary added words being lost

Ive had my phone for a few months and I'm having problems with all the "user added words". They all disappear and I have to start all over again. Very annoying as I prefer to use the phone-pad with predictive txt on to send messages.
Is there anyway to either -
A) Stop this from happening
B) Back-up the words I add so that when it looses them again(which it will) I can reload them back in. There must be a file somewhere that contains these words.
Or, if you have a better solution let me know.
Any help appreciated.

what rom?
you try a different keyboard from playstore?
Thanks for reply.
Its just the stock android version 2.2.2. Bought phone sim free so no network stuff on it.
No, only using the stock keyboard.
Its been behaving lately but that means ive added lots of words so id hate to loose them
Just lost all my words again...this is so annoying.
Wish I had a backup of "user dictionary" so I could reload them.
PITA
sorted it by installing both
Black Bolts Keyboard (which saves user dictionary in usual android location)
and
User dictionary manager UDM (this was no good with LG keyboard as the location of file is different from normal android location)
from google market.
Now i can use this new keyboard, which looks and works better, save my words and also back them up to sd card in case phone looses them...
Sorted.
Hope that help anyone else with this problem.

[Q] Word in dictionary deleted itself

So I'm texting this girl with an unusual name not in the English dictionary. From what I recall her name was always in my texting dictionary from the start. But we had a recent fight and haven't texted in like a week. Is it likely that she deleted my number, or blocked me? Or perhaps I haven't typed her name in a while so it auto erased?

How should she without infiltrating your mobile? You seam really scared.. Her "name" is stored in phone or in the cloud you use. In what way should she have blocked you whatsapp or by her phone or a third party hack? I disable any kind of automatation i can find and is not REALLY necessarry on the mobile. Even forced many backgroundservives to close and deleted a vary of system apps. Shrinked permissions and wakelocks. I don't like it when my phone does acting on his own. I paid for it, so it has to do what i want instead of telling me what to do...
May be you resetted GO keyboard settings or Dalvik?

"Maximum number of characters reached" in S6

Hi guys,
Recently upgraded my company mobile from S5 to S6. All good and fun, but the problem is that I quite often send long text messages to my customers.
On the S5 I could, without any problems, attach text from memo (where I have my text templates saved) and send it - no problems, some of them are long and reach/are sent in 5 simultaneous texts (without converting them into MMS).
On S6 however I can't send them - once it reaches 480 characters it doesn't allow me to type anything. Message appears "Maximum number of characters reached".
Why's that? I flashed Marshmallow based roms (which I had on my S5) and nothing. Is that a particular limitation on S6 ---> onwards phones?
It there any way to solve this?
Thank you for your help.
Anyone?
