Question on modem selection - Captivate General

Hello all,
I am using an I897 Samsung Captivate, the wifi and mobile data connection are extremely slow, browser or other apps. I am trying to flash different modems to see if I could get better connection, for few modems I have tried thus far, I constantly get slower download/faster upload on speedtest.net, is this normal? On all my other phones, downloading is always faster than uploading.
The modems I have tried so far:
i9020XXKB3
i896uxkh2
radio-cm7-ics-captivate-aojp3-signed.zip
radio-cm7-ics-captivate-bujs1-signed.zip
UGKG3
For all of these modems I got downloading on wifi in the 400~600Kbps range, and uploading in the 5000Kbps range.
Thanks for checking!

Why don't you try the KK4 modem? It is the latest and the last release of stock of Captivate. Improved battery and all. Almost perfect.

Check out this thread in the Dev section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227717 there is a link to a good website where users in your geographical location report the performance of various modems.
GL!

stock kk4 is solid here in Northern California.
re your data transfer rates: my download is consistently 5 to 10 times greater than upload on 3g at&t. if you are using wifi, the up/down ratio is going to be determined by the service connected to the wifi router.

Is the faster uploads happening on both Wifi and Wireless data?

flashing modems?

okay can i flash a 3g modem back on my captivate? and if so where can i find one i'm experimenting with alot of different roms but all the ones i'm using use HSDPA? not sure if i abbreviated that right but could someone explain the advantages of that to me because all the developers seem to favor those modems and ive found that when i'm traveling a 3g modem is much nicer and i prefer them so can someone please help me out?
Hspda IS 3g but faster. It basically is 3.5g or what ATT is now calling 4g. So if you have it, it is just a faster version of 3g for downloading and uploading speeds.

I'm looking for an older modem too. I've been trying to figure out why my battery life is horrible since going to Perception 10.3 and the next thing to rule out is HSDPA. Maybe the signal for that is low in my area. When i was on 2.1 I would get a day and a half on my battery but as soon as i flashed, I'm lucky to get six hours with zero use.
There's a stickied "modem" thread in the developers section. It has most if not all the popular modems in it. They can be installed via CWM. JK3, JK4, and Telus GT JL3 seem to be the most recent. I found Telus to be the best on my phone. Gave me better battery life as well. Many say the same thing about JK4 but it didn't do that for me. These are all I9000 modems but they also have the older modems as well.
I'd suggest switching to the KP1 modem. There was a comment earlier today of someone getting 25 hours and still having 50% battery left. I don't know how much is idle and how much is normal use.

i found a site that gives the service mode code for disabling HSDPA. I ended up with dial-up data speeds using perception 10.3 and KP1 modem but your results may vary.

FYI, I like my JK4 modem, 20 hours of battery life and 4706kbps down and 1323kbps up while inside. And no, my wifi was not turned on.

I recently switched to Precision and am using the JK4 modem. So far it's very responsive. I'm not sure if this affects you but the ping time on it is fantastic. My market loads in seconds, while on Andromeda it took like a minute. I wasn't a huge fan of that rom. You should also look into the glitterballs kernel. I liked that one.

Currently AT&T flipped the switch on HSPA+ to keep people happy until the official launch of their LTE network this summer which will dwarf all other 4G networks that Sprint (WiMax), Verizon (LTE), or T-Mobile (HSPA+) have.

Throughout the past year AT&T has been updating their towers which is why lots of people have been noticing issues with connectivity and signal strength.

I get about 140-190 ping. I haven't tried glitterballs latest kernel, but I'm pretty happy with the performance I get with Firebird without overclocking.

[Q] T-Mobile update service

Please explain to me,
what is T-Mobile update service doing with an arrow up and down, what is it downloading? it has been doing it all night and is still doing?
It's probably downloading the KD1 OTA update.

How long does that usually take, and does it work faster if i switch it over to wifi?

No clue on how long, as many of us have effectively disabled FOTA. It is probably a couple hundred MB that need to be downloaded.
It is possible that the FOTA servers "trickle" the release out so as not to swamp your connection and allow you to continue to use your browser, email, MMS, etc.
WiFi might be faster, all depending on how fast your personal Internet connection is compared to your 4G connection, assuming that the FOTA servers aren't significantly bandwidth limited. If you don't have more than 3-5 Mbps on your DSL/cable, you might be faster on 4G (I typically see 3-8 Mbps throughput on 4G in the SF Bay Area).
i have this too, and it's been on and off for about a day now. not sure what it's doing and how it affects my battery power/connection..

Slow data speeds Philadelphia suburbs possible fixes?

Anyone else live in this area and experience slow data? Fastest we've recorded was 1.5 mbps. Avg is 300-500 kpbs downstream. Tried to verify all APN settings with 4 different roms, these were correct. No change in speed.
Anyway to verify the radio is working correctly? I'm starting to wonder if it's hardware issue. (settings show hsdpa connection) I've tried stock radio, ota radio, and most recent the M2 radio. M2 has fixed gps problems, but still have slow data.
Have you been using the proper RIL files with your radios?

Using Mikes latest atm, I'm using the recommended radio for this ROM (the ROM contains the correct RIL files).
I live in the burbs as well, but the fastest I've gotten is about 3mb down / 1mb up.
Normal speed is around 1.5mb down / 1mb up.
Not as fast as others, not as fast as I expected, but still not terrible either. I've found the updated OTA radio the best. Maybe try flashing a different ROM and make sure your're using the correct RIL for the ROM your using. AOSP Roms use the G RIL I believe. Sense ROMS use the HM RILs.

I don't live there but travel there from day to day. What you 2 are getting I got also. I make it a point to check data speeds wherever I go. Speeds are much better in Harrisburg and York area.

Infuse internet speeds (Network and Wi-Fi)

Hello, I am having some issues with my Infuse. When I am connected to my Wi-Fi, Browsing the web is very sluggish and YouTube videos are pretty much out of the question for me. I'm just wondering if this is a hardware malfunction or just the infuse in general? Is there any kind of tweaks that I can use to speed up the internet connectivity via Wi-FI? Or something I can do to my router settings to speed this up? I can sit right next to my wireless router and it still doesn't do any good. The speeds I am getting on speedtest.net mobile app are:
Wi-Fi = Ping: 71ms DL: .43Mbps UL: 1.11Mbps,
AT&T 3g(I do not have 4g connectivity where I am at) = Ping: 181ms DL: 2.77Mbps UL: .62Mbps
Laptop on Wi-Fi = Ping: 52ms DL: 5.27Mbps UL: 2.48Mbps
*NOTE* This is on the same wifi connection and on the same server.
Change your modem to KK3 and set your router to WPA2 encryption cause wep is junk
Which Modem+ROM+Kernel is OP currently using please?
Not exactly sure on which modem or kernel right now as I'm at work, can look when I get home. I am on the infused v2.2.3 rom by gtg. Whatever his rom comes with is what is on my phone. I will also try those router settings when I get home, thanks for the replies.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Well I believe it's KI3... and infused kernel.
So all I can say is the modem you have is what works best for me, so that's fine, although some people report that KK3/4 work better for them.
As far as the rom goes, gtg does BRILLIANT work and I have much, much respect. For my particular Infuse 4G and location, however, I never got good Wifi results with Infused. Don't know why.
You'll find differing opinions everywhere, but I have the best wifi reception with MIUI, but there are too many other things about MIUI ROMs that bother me, so I don't use them. I find it unstable...CM7 is also great on wifi for me.
If you can't get results with infused, try another rom!
For network, try APN trick or Thunderbolt...
hope you work it out!
Well today while I was on my break I did another speed test and got pretty amazing speeds for AT&T 3g. So I think my issue is just wifi. Is there a thread you could point me towards to try flashing another modem to see if it fixes my issue? What exactly does the modem control?

diablo009's CWM-flashable modem thread is stickied in Dev.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342978
To be honest the question you're asking is a bit above my understanding, but from what I can gather:
-Modem is a piece of firmware that interacts with the radio hardware in the phone
-Affects signal strength and performance, data speeds, can affect battery drain because certain modems will tax the battery more/less
But not sure about wifi effects, really. In any case, I've always found that switching ROMs and kernels is the only way to achieve any significant improvement in wifi performance...but that's just my experience.
Thank you for your help. I will try a different modem and/or rom and/or kernel and post my results after doing so. Hopefully I can solve this issue. I just don't understand why I get good data speeds when connected to 3g with a good signal but when I am at home on Wi-Fi it just craps out. Again thanks for all the replies.
Just flashed KK3 and although I am getting better wireless reception, the dl and ul speeds are still the same. Give or take a little bit. Is it plausible that this is a hardware issue?
Yes it's plausible. But probably not really one you can do anything about.
The infuse's wifi reception seems to be a weak point of the phone, at least against other phones that have been in my house connected to my router. Maybe poor internal antenna quality/placement?
Best option is to play around with different ROM/Modem/Kernel combos until you find one that works for you, imho.
Another thing you might try (I did) is putting a higher gain antenna on your router. Most stock router antennas are between 2-5 dBi... you can find indoor ones up to around 10 dBi...
I think of it using a metaphor: wireless signal = sound waves
The router is trying to talk to the Infuse, but the Infuse is hard of hearing, so the sound (signal) isn't getting received very well. Ideally, I'd like to get the Infuse new ears or a hearing aid... but since that's not possible... I'll just give my router a megaphone (antenna) so it can shout a louder (stronger) signal.
...That was a bit silly, actually... hehe.
Anyways, good luck! I relate to this issue cause I've been there many a time.
Well it can't possibly be my wifi router or isp. The download speeds on my laptop are pretty good. I get good wifi reception on my infuse(full bars) but my dl and ul speeds are just crap. My brother has a cheap android phone on boost mobile and when I run a speed test with his phone on the same wifi network I get around 3Mbps down. It must be a hardware faulty. Is there anything else that I could try other than a different rom/kernel/modem? Anybody know how much Samsung charges for repairs?
Don't blame your phone or rom to quick. I noticed my problem came from the Internet itself. I had to call att to fix my slow speeds by resetting my connection on their side. It could always be the Internet providers fault as far as your wifi goes, and network is a whole other story.

wow, I didn't know that.
I changed my home's router to WPA2 and the speed improvement on my Infuse is shocking. Switched back/forth a number of times to verify and download speeds went from 7-8Mbps to 14.2Mbps. I feel stupid but am happy nevertheless.
thanks!
(ha, now everyone in my family will have to change their device security...xbox (son1), Playstation (son2), AppleTV(me), iP4s(son2), laptop(2, wife), nook color CM7 (me), imac(me) and I'm sure there's more!!!)
You should always use WPA2 when securing your internet connection over your router regardless of what you use your internet for. This is how we keep assholes from stealing our internet connection. Always run a speed test from www.Speedtest.net to be sure your getting your max mbps you payed for, otherwise make the call to Whoever, At&t f'd my line up yet again saying something about my modem wasn't updated which is complete bull**** cause they never send out modem updates, and my speed was running at 0.91mbps instead of 6.56mbps, said I needed to reset my modem and took me through a 30min process just to get my speed back to 6.56mbps.
Having a Dual Band Router and Dual Band Internet card may provide even better results. You can always use 1 of the bands and have your family use the other band.
Well I just can't find an issue with my actual internet. My computer gets decent speeds. My Xbox gets an awesome connection when I play it. My brothers crap android phone even gets better speeds when I run a speed test on it. I just don't understand why it would do it to my phone. I will see how wpa works here in just a bit but I don't see it fixing my issue.

Is there anyway to change any wifi settings on the phone itself? Other than the options in the settings menu?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Your phone doesn't allow you to really change any major Wifi settings, Just add Network connections. Any settings would have to be changed on the routers settings itself. Sorry I couldn't be much of help.
Edit: Woops! Actually if you open up the Wifi Settings and tap the menu button click advanced. It allows for extra settings for setting up a connection. Might help you if you need to put in a specific port, DNS server, Proxy, Static Ip, Ip Address and etc.
Any help at all is a lot for me. I'm just going to have to conclude this as a hardware issue. I just don't see how though. Thanks to everyone who has replied, one thing I learned is how much a difference WPA2 security makes haha.

Who else has bad 4g speeds?

I live in a good 4g coverage area, and still sometimes I notice it being really slow. I'll run the speedtest app, and I'll get speeds of 1Mbps or slower. When I power cycle the phone, and re-run the test, it jumps to 9Mbps. And turning airplane mode on and off does not have the same affect.
Is this happening to anyone else? I'm also looking to see if this does happen to others, if they are also having SD card issues, to see if maybe there's a connection.

I, thankfully, knock on wood, haven't experienced any slow 4G speeds. But oddly my signal bars never jump above 2. Even in areas that are fully 4G supported areas. It occurred in New York City as well which was odd as heck. The download speeds though are like that of someone with better signal strength.

Just tested it out again, 17mbit up and 2.87 down...its faster in both up/down than the wifi network i connect to near by.
For those of you having bad 4g speeds, I would suggest trying out different modems. When I was on the release modem, i was getting about 5mb/s, after upgrading to the 'OTA' modem I jumped up to 15mb/s. Not the best speeds, but a definite improvement.
