[REQ] A better Google Voice app - Android Apps and Games

I use Google Voice as my primary SMS client. The android app is functional, maybe, but the interface is atrocious.

Seriously, it's just plain text.
The few themes for the app out there do little to help, and when I looked at the XML files, I can see why. There's very little room for customization outside of color tweaking, at least from what I could tell from tinkering for a couple of hours. There's no way to add bubbles like there is the the stock SMS app, and all of the SMS text is left aligned, whether it's an incoming or outgoing text.
So what I'm asking is, can a developer make a Google Voice app that improves on the crappy existing interface and adds bubbles, and aligns outgoing texts to the right and incoming texts to the left?
(like so)
I know Google Voice doesn't have any official API, but these guys have been working around that (I'm not really a programmer so I'm not sure if that link is actually relevant )
And if a 3rd party Google Voice client is truly unfeasible, can a developer look into theming the official GV app with bubbles and the text alignment I described? Like I said, I'm not a programmer so my (unsatisfying) efforts may not have scratched the surface of what can actually be done.
tl;dr Google voice sms interface is fugly, plz somebody add bubbles and make it look more like a messaging app

The reason I wasn't content with it is that it seems like there's no way to get the bubbles to fit the text; they always just expand to fill the whole screen from side to side...
But if you like it, by all means, feel free to use it!

Any way to get the airplane send button on my Gingerbread device?

I didn't realize that the Google Voice app was different between GB and ICS.
I just started using GV integration today, and it's been mostly good. My only issue is that it doesn't sync directly with google voice, so if I send an sms from my computer, it won't show up on my phone like it does with the GV app.

I had been using GV Integration for a while and had been communicating a lot with the developer. I've found that it's just too buggy/unreliable. It's an amazing idea off to a great start, but needs a lot more work.
Unfortunately, I haven't heard from the developer for weeks now and there hasn't been an update in a while. I'm fearing this may have become abandonware.

I sent an email yesterday
Thats my google voice. Isnt there a png file in the phone with an airplane?

I use Google Voice SMS Integration and it works great with Go SMS Pro. So now I can send and receive text using Go SMS Pro instead of the native google voice app. Thus I have different themes.

Anyone know how to change font colors when theming apks?

Can we flash the file as a zip in recovery to install it (like a new Rom) our do we have to follow the many stepped directions previously linked to??

Also I found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002279) which shows a great inverted theme/flash to google voice, any chance you two could work together using his UI and your awesome bubbles??
It would be the best google voice mod ever.

I have always been extremely disappointed with GV.

great app but...
Hey,
I absolutely love the theme in post #3, but I was wondering if the dev of that theme would do me a smallll favor. When it's really sunny and it's hard to see the screen, it's really hard to read incoming texts because the black text and the dark-ish gray bubble really just blend together. The blue bubbles are however very easy to read. Is it possible to possibly make the gray bubbles a lighter shade (ex. the same shade of gray as the call/compose icons in the top right or some shade in between but I assume it's better to use a shade that's already part of the theme), and if not that then it could even work to switch the colors so outgoing messages are in the gray bubbles, and incoming are blue, since it's more important to be able to read the other person's messages as not mine.
Hopefully it's a small task for you, thanks in advance!

Droid X Messaging App

Can we get this ported to the EVO?
Just the .apk would work, right? the DX's sms app looks so much better than any i've seen on any other phone. I'd love to have it.
give me some love, guys
+1 on this, but if im not mistaken this should go in the apps section
PM a Mod and ask them to move this to theming it'll get more attention there
+1 I can't stand the Sense mms app. Actually, I thought IncredibleDoes was developing a Droid X rom for the EVO and Incredible...
well it's been moved and other people are in agreeance, but it seems XDA isn't ever too keen to help someone out
I would like to see this as well since Handcent does not work well anymore on the EVO, its very very slow n it lags.

First of all, XDA doesn't do anything. That is simply the forum. It's the developers, many of them with jobs, kids and other responsibilities, that give up their time to help you. So at ease.
Secondly, if you had taken the time to do some googling, instead of posting a new whine every couple hours, you MIGHT have found: http://www.droid-life.com/2010/04/15/download-new-mms-apk-with-custom-settings/
EDIT1: Also, with a little more digging, i found the original APK from the droid x. http://rapidshare.com/files/431493880/Mms.zip
Anyone using this also getting fc when trying to change the font size ?
I was looking for this this morning. Well either this or the Vibrant/Galaxy S one. They're both similar. The Sense mms.apk is actually really good, it's just super slow.
For now I'm using Handcent with squared off chat bubbles and the Hero theme:

Are u experiencing any lag with handcent?? Like when the message is received it takes like 5-10 seconds longer till the phone notifys me even tho im viewing the message thro the quick reply screen.
Everything seems normal. But there are some things you have to change. In send settings, you have to tell it to split messages or ones longer than one text wont go through. Set it to "split by word" for the best results.
Also, disable the lockscreen popup if you have the stock sense loclscreen since it wont work and will wakelock your phone. And lastly, disable the lockscreen from turning on your screen so it doesn't turn on in your pocket.

Aosp Inverted Gtalk, Gmail, Google Voice, and Google Search for CM7

Just passing these along to those that want to use them. They are both flashable apps. The Gmail probably works for all roms but the Gtalk is for gingerbread roms and maybe just for CM based roms as ive only tested on CM7.
I know there have been inversions before but the email is both in the list of emails and in the base of the email itself. The GTalk is the same way where its in the list as well as the conversations of the app.
Credit goes to the guys over in the droid forums. I tried to invert the Gtalk for gingerbread before but there was one thing missing and that was the outgoing parts of the conversations and they found the fix for it in the smali code.

[APP] [UPDATED 6/24] Text Notify (Now Supports K9 Mail)

This app is simple but useful for people that heavily use full screen apps (games/browsers/ect). It gives a nice little notification that shows the text message/email you just received, allowing you to decide if it's worth quitting your app to reply to it (see picture), even if you're in another app! You can turn the notifications on and off via the main screen. The best part of it is you can play and the notification will not interfere with your touch on the game. It might also have the simplest options menu.
FEATURE LIST:
Now supports K9 Mail (requires K9 Mail for functionality)
Shows the sender (name from contacts list or number if contact doesn't exist)
Shows the contents of the message
Low profile
Doesn't interfere with the touch interface of whatever task you are doing
Easy to turn on or off just by the touch of a checkbox
Lightweight
No more quitting Angry Birds just to see that someone texted you "lol"
Works in portrait and landscape orientations
Permissions explained:
Read SMS: So that it can read the text to show you
Read contacts: so that it can see if anyone in your contacts shares the same number and the text sender
Please report any bugs to me.
P.S. I know this is a VERY simplistic app and may seem pointless. If you feel that way that is fine, however I have had a lot of people that laughed at it originally tell me they can't use any full screen app without and they never turn it off. So I simply ask you give constructive criticism. Thank you!

Hey xda, here's a little project I have been working on recently. I am the type that forgets stuff easily, so "todo" lists are a godsend. However, I am frustrated by how slow the process is to create a new reminder, so I decided to make my own.
Notable allows you to create notification reminders on the go. Need to remind yourself of something to do? Just open the app, type in a short message, and create the note! It's that easy! You can see your reminders and notes straight from your notification area.
Notable is designed with speed and simplicity in mind. No need to go back to home screen and launch the app to create a reminder, just open the notifications, click the shortcut, and create away! Best of all, Notable runs in an overlay so you don't need to quit what you are doing beforehand. Notify is also ad-free and lightweight on your phone.
Quick feature rundown:
-Multi-line reminders
-Different color flags (icons)
-Option to turn a quick shortcut on and off in the settings
-Design inspired from the Holo / Google Now cards
-Click to dismiss the notification
-Restore previous reminders after a reboot
-(Android 4.1+) Edit notifications
-(Soon) Sync with Google Tasks
Get it here!
Very nice! Been looking for something like this.

Looks cool and AWESOME I am going to make a few requests . 1 thing that annoys me is the "Add Reminder" notification if possible can you implement add new note to the only expanded or the first expanded. 2 It would be nice to have folders or a profile toggle inside the app that lets you choose between your "work" "home" "school" or whatever to show in the notification bar and not the other profile. 3 We all love widgets. Keep up your work
Very nice app.Handy and fast :good: I would love to have the ability to change the reminder icons with some custom ones
I am also available for Greek Translation if you want
Thank a lot for your app, Very useful and nice looking .
It's exactly what I was looking for ! I'm waiting for syncing with Google...
If you need french translation, I'm your man !

lg g3 stock sms themes..any other options?

so this is a great phone. but theres two really annoying and upsetting issues.
1. when i get a notifcation, the screen doesnt wake up..really?
2.the sms themes they provide us. i love i can put my own background there, and individual ones too. but the bubbles SERIOUSLY are lacking, and are down right ridiculous. grey and beige? grey and teal? grey and purple? white and beige? oh, and the worst..a yellow sunshine bubble, and a pink sunshine bubble...and a pink piggy bubble, and a white chicken bubble.
i am 24 years old. i dont want to have anything to do with a bubble shaped like a pink pig or a white chicken.
are there any decent bloat-free apps out there that offer more customization, besides rooting?
Wondering the same thing

Try Textra amazing app for sms replacement. Looks better than stock version also no bloat and easy to set up.

LGG3 and beyond
c'mon the chicken and pig are pretty funny
ugly as sin and made for like a 8 yr old, but funny nonetheless.
all the customizations in the lg skin app are made for teenage girls it seems.

Does it have pop up feature like the stock sms?
I'm using Sliding SMS (CM Messaging). Looks good, is fully customisable and has pop up function as well.

In a different way, but yes :good:
I love the chicken and the pig, it's what I'm using now What I don't like about the stock one is you can't set individual notifications for different people. Does textra or sliding sms? Have been using go sms but want something less bloaty.

Yes you can. You just have to go into their contact profile the same way you would for a ringtone. I've lived with handcent or gosms or textra for about 4 years now and I'm enjoying the stock lg messaging app so far.

Yes it has a pop up sms setting plus a quick reply window. Very good app.
With Textra you can have individual contact notification to both sound and coloured icons
Funny thing is the OP isn't ask g about sms replacements but themes for the stop app

Everyone should try QKSMS. It looks great. Still in alpha, but works well

i love qksms, the development is coming along. def very fast and gorgeous (if you like material design) but not customisable if that's what the OP wants.
evolve is good too and has a ton of themes.
So about notifications not waking the screen up? Is that intentional or can we toggle it in settings somewhere? I'm using pin lock.
