ICS and Transformer?

Is there anything official on whether or not the Transformer will get the 4.0 OS update when/if it is released in the next couple of months?
If not official what is the general consensus?

That's because I'm a freaking newbie here! I also read a link since then in the other post where it looks like Google is pretty much requiring 18 months for updates on Android devices so I'll say it here to since no one else will... The answer is YES!

One thing is for sure: if you root your TF, you'll have ICS.

I thought that it was only required to be a part of that new alliance or whatever it's called. Asus isn't part of that alliance is it? However, all that aside, I would be shocked if we didn't get it. Asus has been the best at getting updates out of any manufacturer that I've seen so far.

Not much is known about ICS, other than that it is a combination of Honeycomb and Gingerbread. The Nexus Prime is coming out soon, which will be the first ICS device, so we can only wait.

i'd be willing to put money on Asus upgrading to ice cream sandwich. They seem pretty committed to the transformer and have been quick to bring out updates. The fact the latest update gave us the choice to change the mouse cursor on the dock (after many complaints) shows they're paying attention to what people are saying.

With TFI getting dead last attention from ASUS as of late, they better be optimizing

I personally feel ASUS have neglected the Infinity tablet worse than they did when their Transformer Prime was their most newest Transformer.
I've not seen a single update notification from them since I got this tablet on July 30th, and it's now September 8.
Do they still have that facebook page they use to respond to?
There hasn't been any new news from Googling the Transformer Infinity (besides it's launches in Europe and Australia) since it's reviews and launch reports that were made in June and July.
I know Google intentions were to boast it's Nexus 7 tablet, but wouldn't it made since to keep your more premium tablet running your software on the same level of promotion?

The infinity still has bugs that needs terminating and this is suppose to be the high end of transformers. Its suppose to get some high end service... Right? Hehehe..

Gary Key was trying to cover and hide the issues with the Prime and save Asus's reputation. He is in marketing, not engineering. That was all a big joke. The Infinity doesn't have near the issues the Prime had so Gary wont come over here unless the media starts reporting negatively on the Infinity. I will still never forget Gary Key saying in that interview that the Serial Number Unknown issues were fixed server side when there were dozens of people on these forums who still had the problem and the only fix was to send in your tablet and get a replacement. He flat out lied and I'm glad he isn't around.

why do people make these threads? If you are not happy with the device, exchange it for something else. Why keep buying from a company, whos reputation you don't like? They didnt force us to buy their products. Yes, there are bugs. Give them time to fix everything. They issue a fix today, and then new bugs show up tomorrow, do you expect them to release another update the next day? I'm sure people are hard at work trying to rectify all of the issues. And yes, they still have the FB page, and announced on there several times that JB would be coming this month. People just need to have patience. Every time some type of update gets announced, people start making threads asking when will we get them. technology is not something that can be created in a matter of minutes.
My Infinity is not perfect. But i can be patient and have confidence that Asus will fix the issues. Why wouldnt they? How can they just leave us with messed up devices, and then come out with new products? Who will buy them, given they got over us on the first time? Contact ASUS and voice your complaints. It really doesnt help posting them here.

Update 4.2

From what I have read Asus will not update the TF700T to 4.2 until the 2nd quarter of 2013 and I wonder why. I am no developer but isn't it just a kernel flash. I mean why wait so long if its not a complete redo of the android version?

Right asus is kinda testing android 4.2 with tf300t users for any major bugs because tf300 and tf700 are almost the same hardware(chipset, ram, etc.). Transformer infinity is their flagship and they can't let infinity users suffer with any major bugs.

That's a lot better than Toshiba did with the thrive. Toshiba didn't support it or seem to care.

Hahahahahaha... :laugh: Not letting Infinity users suffer? In which universe?
Anyway, the same thing happened with Jelly Bean. Asus rolled it out to the low and mid-range tablets first as a testrun, and when it worked properly (more or less, I still can't type an é) they send it our way.
I'd rather wait a few more months than get a buggy OS. Besides, I'm already glad Asus decided to incorporate the option to get rid of that horrendous 7"-designed double bar UI.

So it's 6 days in on March, so we expect to see Android 4.2 update for TF700 in 25 days.

Awesome. Let's just hope asus can get it together and deliver a good update (I know I know... It's not likely). Is sad that many people have had to unlock just to get the value they payed for

I was talking about any major bugs if they ever existed. When tf300 got jellybean 4.1 the performance went terribly bad and had a hell lot of bugs. But when the update came to infinity some bugs were fixed and the performance was not as bad as it was on tf300. I know that a few ppl are not happy with infinity but the fact is none of the android tablets are totally bug free. If you want something so smooth or something just go with apple. But i bet its not as open as android.

We are all here to get the most from an android tablet, dealing with that stupid fruit company's products is it's own kind of suffering. That said, android could be better on our beloved tabs than Asus has allowed it to be. My father has a 300 and it has gone through growing plains also but I still see them dropping the ball on features on their entire tablet line, I had a 200(but let's not go there). They need to get their act together with this one. I want my HDMI scale and crop options back, and please don't take away my locking task bar again! They should be better at these by now but I disagree that they learned anything from the 300 and took it to the 700. If nothing else, look through the feature changes and issues that people run into on the 200, 300, and 700 updates and you will see that these are completely different development teams. Tien from Asus said it himself, the teams are not working together and some of the changes and features on one model may never get applied to others. That includes fixes.

Mostly we're laughing because of the I/O issue and the (in the US) poor build quality, and the accents on the keyboard dock that still aren't functioning, and other such issues. Oh, and the WiFi/GPS issue of a certain previous tablet.
Older and lower-range products have always been used as guinea pigs... someone has to be the test group. Makes sense to go with those who paid less for the product.

On the TF700 the screen resolution does seem to bring the Tegra3 to its knees far more easily than of the TF300. Furthermore, ASUS has known about the I/O issue for AGES, and athough the TF201 owners were quite vocal about the crappy performance on their devices, ASUS didn't give a **** and put the TF700 out there with identical device genetics and thus the same problems. The only fix they made was the plastic strip that alleviated the WiFi/GPS problems.
So, yes, I found your remark the most entertaining one that day.

I wonder if this could be cause for class action.
I mean not being able to download a app and browse at the same time for me is a complete disappointment.
I would consider that to be a reasonable expectation of performance, and if this was really a "known" issue with a definitive solution, and was not addressed in a newer model, just seems like we got a lemon and Ausus knew it.
This is my first and only tablet and I don't have a lot of experience with them, but I think the "Browser has stop responding" message all the time when running stock is ridiculous. I know there are workarounds but at $600 dollars for a 3rd Gen tablet we shouldn't need workarounds for basic functionality.
Question: Can the memory be changed by a professional with the proper equipment? or is this a situation where the chips are embedded in the board through a process that can not be undone with out destroying the board?

ASUS support, meh, who needs it.

Agreed, If I'd stayed on stock for the past 8 months my device would be in pieces scattered about my apartment. The rage inducing lag was absurd. Quite happy with the new 10.1 nightlies though. Mmmmm 4.2.
Sometimes I wonder if ASUS realizes that truly interested consumers will just go to places like XDA for support and updates, making them slack at supporting their less ambitious customers. Makes some sense (not cool, but logical)

It should be a reasonable expectation with a premium tablet to have a smooth user interface no matter what updates are being downloaded.
And no, a pro that can de-solder a built in nand chip would likely cost you over $600 and probably wouldn't even work.

TF300 running 4.2, We're getting it when?

I'm simply confused of why does asus release updates on the lower end model?
I ditched the 300 for the infinity, and never looked behind but now it kind of backfires, i'm still hoping 4.2 will solve some of the lag issues, i just don't understand why the 300 is smoother with lower specs, ( dont bring screen res in this please )

Well if you would ask me i would say they are experimenting on the lower end tablet before updating their flagship. I know many won't agree with me and though Tein from Asus said that the teams for software development of each of the devices are different I would say why would Asus openly admit that they are testing out their firmware on tf300t. That would outrage tf300t owners.

If you tell me that the screen res is what's causing the problem i'll return the tablet right now, it has a powerful gpu that is capable of running more pixels on some very basic graphics, and a cpu that is even more powerful so dont throw that **** at me that the tf300 is smoother because of the screen res. Sure 3d gaming is where the tf300 outperforms because of the res, but in menu's i bet its something else

The screen res no matter still has something to do with it. On cyanogen 10.1 it is very smooth, in Cromi it is fast but doesnt seem as smooth as cyanogen. I think that is the difference between 4.1.x and 4.2.x. And the bloatware on the tf700 by ASUS seems to be what slows in down tremondously. Also drivers are an issue on it as well. The bloatware when taken away, in Cromi's case, leaves a very fast tablet. ASUS should take some advice from sbdags LOL.

Get your act together -- you specifically said in your OP that you hoped 4.2 fixed the lag issues. SELL THE 700 AND BUY AN IPAD.
EDIT: How the hell can you tell XDA has gone downhill when you only registered in June 2012, probably when you got your 700? Pffff...

You asked a question in which you didnt want to be given the answer that is the answer. Yes there are bugs in the Rom but you cannot expect people to give you answer they dont have or you dont want given to you. 4.2 will eventually be released for the tf700, why they released it on the 300 first idk, maybe there was more bugs to work out on the tf700 than on the 300. If you are not happy with the tf700 then go back to the 300. Other then that there are no other answers to be given.

They always release stuff for the TF300 first. I would imagine that it has a larger user base and that it's a bit of a guinea pig release for them. I have noted that with previous releases that Asus are fairly quick and knocking out updates to fix things and then the TF700 gets the new patched release as its first release. This is what happened with 4.1.1

Not sure why everyone keeps asserting that they are somehow using the tf300 to improve the update before releasing to the tf700 crowd. Just because it has some logic behind it does not mean that Asus is in any way as logical as your reasoning.
I repeat, Tien has stated in no uncertain terms that the development teams are different and if you look at the features of the devices, they are similar but not the same in most cases, but different enough to require different teams and feature support.
Sdbags... U da man, but sorry, as illogical as it is, Asus is sharing little from one team to the other. It is a total crap shoot at this point what features get implemented and what bugs carry over from one device to another. This has upset me from the beginning and been a point of contention with my many transformer users whom I support in a corporate setting.
As far as I am concerned, they should get some help from the talented developers here, like yourself to get this running properly.
The tf300 is a lower priced device and they are less concerned about backlash from upset users who pay as much as an iPad to get a high end device... They can always claim that it is an entry level device when issues occur with the tf300.
If you look at the features that the 700 has, you can see that there are some additional things that need to be supported before releasing it. IPS+, resolution, different CPU/GPU profiles, support for more ps3 controller profiles, the list goes on.

I repeat, Tien has stated in no uncertain terms that the development teams are different and if you look at the features of the devices, they are similar but not the same in most cases, but different enough to require different teams and feature support.
Sdbags... U da man, but sorry, as illogical as it is, Asus is sharing little from one team to the other. It is a total crap shoot at this point what features get implemented and what bugs carry over from one device to another. This has upset me from the beginning and been a point of contention with my many transformer users whom I support in a corporate setting.
As far as I am concerned, they should get some help from the talented developers here, like yourself to get this running properly.
The tf300 is a lower priced device and they are less concerned about backlash from upset users who pay as much as an iPad to get a high end device... They can always claim that it is an entry level device when issues occur with the tf300.
If you look at the features that the 700 has, you can see that there are some additional things that need to be supported before releasing it. IPS+, resolution, different CPU/GPU profiles, support for more ps3 controller profiles, the list goes on.

Having examined the rom files for the TF700 and TF300 the two devices are a lot closer than you think. The firmwares also share many similarities. In fact a TF300 file and a TF700 file are 99% the exact same files so I don't buy the fact that the dev teams don't talk or are different. They are clearly sharing the same source and at times sharing the same outputs.
If you take a TF700 rom and flash it on a TF300 even with a TF700 kernel everything works except the front facing camera. I believe the hardware is different thus causing that. Otherwise they work the same. Even TF300 users have success overclocking to the same speeds as TF700 users..... The reverse is also true - in fact they don't remove the higher res files form the TF300 because in my opinion it is easier to build one version that fits both.
If I were them I would release new stuff to one user base first, get the bugs ironed out and then release to the higher end user base. Seems very logical and a very good IT release strategy to me. And in fact this is what they did with the JB 4.1.1 release and they appear to be doing with the 4.2.1 release. There is no release date for the TF700. Why? Imo (not based on any facts of course) they are waiting to see if it works well. If so they release a version of it for the TF700, if not they patch the TF300 and we wait a bit longer. So far the reviews from the TF300 users is good - no major bugs (unlike the 4.2 google nexus release) so I expect us to have the TF700 version in the first week of April if history repeats itself.

You make a lot of sense man, if I had not heard it from tien and Gary, I wouldn't believe it either. And as much as I agree with your logic, it's just not the case... They both start with the same base from Google, add their custom framework- that IS 99% of the code. They are very close, but as you have seen with the camera, they are not the same device... Bad strategy, I agree.
The only "facts" I have are what the reps have said in dealing with troubleshooting those devices with Asus.

I had an ipad and sold it, because i didnt like it, and i got my tf700 before june, aaaand i like the tablet tbh. And yeah i said i hope 4.2 fixes the lag issues but thats not what im focusing on,

Wat other improvement are you expecting from 4.2 then? Muti-user capability? Hardly game-chaning, isn't it? Very few users actually use it on the devices that provide the capability.

Guess: no more updates from Asus?

It's starting to look like there will be no more updates form Asus. I previously had a TF101 and it got updates for about 18 months (as required by Google), then silence from Asus. Feels like that again with TF700. Agree?

They did an update last month ...... They've done 3 since April. I'll give them to the new year to do one more and then I think it'll be over

Root, custom recovery, custom roms. All the updates you could ever want.

Maybe, yes. I'd just like to see the stock updates through. Custom roms are more hassle generally, for one because they constantly update (too often...), and each time something changes. I'd like to minimize the updates, because my life seems to be all about updating some $€r?! device all the time: 2 computers, 2 tablets, 2 phones, router, 2 tv's, music amplifier, the nas... everything wants to get updated.

No no, I didn't complain, just put the nets to the water to get a feel if there will be stock updates or not. If consensus is not -> custom rom time.

I truly hope that ASUS will bring 4.4 to our tf700, especially because of the low memory footprint that 4.4 introduces. It would be quite ironic to see Android 4.4 reaching the next billion budget devices while our former flagship device does not get it.

I'm pretty sure we'll see kit kat officially, even if it's just so Asus can keep up the reputation of fast updates to help sell 701s

+1 on this, not to mention that we are still waiting for a 4.3 release, Asus said it will come but there's no sign of it.

I'm sure Asus will support the TF300 and TF700 for as long they did the Prime.

You are aware that the prime never got any updates to JB4.2.1 so that was until JB4.1.1 which was what 18 months max.....
Infinity came out in July 2012.... So we have 2 months left

Check when the Prime and Jellybean 4.2 came out and see if that's 18 months of support.

Prime was released in Dec 2011 in the US? Maybe Feb 2012 here in the UK... The last official release from Asus is 10.4.2.18 which was built on Dec 20 2012.
So there you go you get get 12 months or less..... Don't get your hopes up.

Some go longer. My S2 using Hong Kong firmware got a update last month. The fruit company supports devices years longer.
But some as giving by the Prime example are way shorter than 18 months.

Since the new TF701T is shipping with 4.2, I wouldn't be holding my breath for 4.4 (or even 4.3) on the TF700T.

I'm certainly not holding my breath for a new TF700 build of anything, but didn't the Tegra 3 Memopad launch six months ago or so? Is that device as similar to the TF700 as the TF300 is?

Again, you only need to look at the Prime and how similar it is to the TF300/700.

Right, but in the early days you could flash TF300 firmware on both devices. I'm saying that if Memopad drivers are similar we might be able to squeeze out OEM driver-level optimizations even after Asus stops officially supporting the TF700.
