Making a Rom is all about what you like, not what others....your gonna have to test and choose a kernel yourself, as well as decide on your own what apps to remove or add and what tweaks you may want to add...this is YOUR Rom, not ours make it YOUR way put what YOU like in it...experiment.
Now...if you need help figuring out how to add something, how to decompile an apk, how to get a logcat-that would be a good question that I and others will be more willing to help with
To answer your question, stock kernel is good, as are all the other kernels, some come with oc abilities, some don't
Now please experiment, play around with it have fun be risky and be adventurous...I look forward to your finished rom

the thing you gotta ask yourself like the others are saying is what do you want your rom to have. you want a theme feel to it or do you wanna keep it looking stock. also gotta figure if you wanna add some tweaks or not. there's a lot you gotta figure out before you make a rom. also, you gotta know a lot about what does what when tweaking and all that. i was also thinking about doing some roms myself, but then decided against cause i for one don't have the time nor do i have the patience the devs here have. you also gotta remember that there are gonna be people here who want you to change some things about your rom. and not to mention, you gotta have the time to offer support for it as well. if you do decide to go for it, i wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing your work.
well i do want to learn how to tweak the phone and themes and all that good stuff, i recently messaged raver and he gave me a good start, so i will start studying linux and java then ill be back hopefully with enough info to tweak some newer OS leak or if anything help out on another phone ( hopefully it wont be that long) but like i said i want to learn for self knowledge and also to help create some awesome stuff in the XDA
and i do have the time to support and modify roms as needed.
so if anyone has any advice on the best way to learn linux and java faster post post post!!! lol
and ill come back and read between my readings thanks for not being jerks by the way lol
Also i might base my rom on Android 2.1 J/K haha but im off to a good start tonight

if you wanna base a rom on froyo, by all means go for it. you would be surprised how many people still run on froyo here. some are afraid to take the plunge to gingerbread cause its not official yet for our device. go with what you feel is best. personally, i think there should be a dev who still makes roms for froyo for those who don't wanna take the plunge. its all up to you though. good luck with your journey either way though.
your right im on raver's octaine and its cool but a couple days ago i flashed back to Audiophile Redux 1.3.3 and i saw a big difference in radio and wifi strength so i might actually start off with a Froyo rom, but i was just making a joke earlier cus i said 2.1 like an eclair rom lol
sence so many are intrested in this actually didnt think that many would.. after i update my roms maybe before then i dono... Ill make you all a compendium of how to build apps how to modify exzisting roms how to build your own rom aka asop how to port roms theme them etc... Ill also prob ask krylon and whitehawk and any other dev that wants to contribute to this. If anyone does. It doesnt hurt and hey if a few ore devs come out of it so be it .. If anyone ever has a question 99 percent of the time u can ask people i will reply and give u the answer or if i dont know the answer ill direct you to the proper place to look for it
haha aawesome!!! see this is exactly why i only flash Raver roms!!! wooo i went from octaine 1.0 to audiophile redux to octaine 2.x to audiophile x2 back to octaine 2.x haha
If Raver leaves my phones post- SGS4G will all remain stock lol
im also looking into modding nd tweaking roms myself so a guide like the one raver is gonna make would be very helpful. thanks in advance
As the OP can i erase some comments on this post? lol just asking...again!
also one more question im back to Audiophile Redux 1.3.3 would the SGS4G Adrenaline shot v12 work with my Froyo rom?

[Q] How to choose a ROM?

This is what I call a "high class problem". With so many ROMs to choose from, how does a noob like me decide. Aside from stability, we all probably have different wants and needs.
Can anyone who's checked out the majority of the available ROMs give the rest of us a rundown on the pros and cons of each ROM?
For myself, I'm looking for:
1. Basic
2. Reversible
3. No known issues with wifi, sms, battery drain, ciq, marketplace, etc.
Which one should I pic?

basically, you need to try them out and see for yourself.
the problem is, there will be another one up soon for you to try out
Like u said. To each his own. None of the roms here have major issues that I have flashed. All work and run well only issue is if there using da G's kernel which has Sod issues. Other than that flash away bruh.
Only u can prevent forest fires.....so choose well bruh. LOL

Which ones don't use Da G's kernel? I've read about something called a "stock-ish" kernel.

you can change kernels easier than changing roms. even if a rom has his kernel, you can flash whatever kernel you like in place of it....

Other than doing a complete Nandroid backup, is there anyway to just backup your current kernel prior to flashing a new kernel? SGS KERNEL FLASHER doesn't work on the Skyrocket, and i'd like to backup my stock kernel in case I need to reflash it.

its close. if i have time this weekend you will see something drop. i have a few more tweaks i want to do before i consider it ready. internally, im already up to beta8, lol. i hope to have beta10 release as an RC1 for everyone.
From what I seen so far I seen no reason to try them though somebody has to or they never get fully debugged.
Some of the ROMs are AT&T only ..... sorry got SGH-I727R
Some of them do have Rogers ROMs but I read of Sleep of Death and losing LTE connection..... sorry too buggy and I NEED LTE or I would of got the Galaxy Nexus.
Finally what I really want is ICS and NOT ICS themed ROMs
None of them are for me but I check everyday when a ICS ROM comes out I will try it.
Finally I recommend you NEVER try Roms if you are not sure that you can restore.
I have backuped my ROMs, Apps and Data, APNs I am 95% certain I can recover from anything.
For that other 5% I have Odin and the orginal Rogers ROM
Just to agree with everyone else, you've got to try them out. There's no harm in it as long as you've done your nandroid back up, you're pretty safe when it comes to reverting back to your previous ROM and settings.
Reading the features and change logs for each of them helps alot... but it still doesn't give you a full grasp of what it has to offer until you flash and test it.

[Q] Galaxy Skyrocket Custom Rom

Hello All,
I am a total newbie to all of this, I just bought a Galaxy s2 Skyrocket. I managed to find good info on how to root it and did that with something called superoneclick. So it is showing rooted with out the yellow triangle. Now for my question.
There are so many custom roms out there i have no clue what to do. All i am really looking for is a custom rom that will let me do the following if it is possible, wifi tethering, custom bootanimation and if it will let me overclock. And I guess something that is stable as i see mentioned on here a lot.
Anyway anyone that has time to help a newbie I would really appreciate it. There is a lot of great info on here but most of it is written for people that at least have a clue about this stuff.
Most of all i want to say thank you to anyone who is willing to help me in advance. And if you don't feel like helping a newbie I do understand that also.
Thank You
I like skyROCKeteer. It's a good, stable, custom rom. It'll suit all your needs. Check it out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19279400

First of all thank you for your reply. Am I reading this correct that I install version 2.0 and then install the addons and fixes? Or will everything be fine with the 2.0 and the fixes are already in there. Sorry to be so much trouble some of it is just confusing to me and I dont want to brick "i believe that is the correct term" my phone.
Thank You

SkyRocketeer and Sky Ice Cream Sandwich are pretty good. Next one I will be testing out will be the Red Sonja!
Red sonja is the best. Completly stable and fast. Vibrate does not work. But other then that its its perfect.
I'm using Super Stock 2.3.6. It's a rather bare bones ROM that is close to stock but with a few tweaks and removals of stuff like bloatware and other things. Overall I'm satisfied. I'm using this until the AOSP is released and some of the other ROMs become a bit more stable.
I'm using Sky Ice Cream Sandwich, it's my daily driver. Whichever rom you install, make sure you follow the dev's instructions. Only install roms for skyrocket, very important.
Most Roms in the Dev section are Stable-ish.
Red Sonja is probably the MOST stable in my OP.....less vibration, you dont have to do any work arounds, no extra flashing less the 4 intitial flashes( really 2 flashes if you dont want the comic pages)
but after that, everything is working as it would be on stock.
Thank You
First of all again thanks to everyone that gave me advise. I know have my first custom rom on my phone with the addons that looked interesting. Also a custom kernel.
I only have one question if i decide to try another rom, is there a way to go back to the way i have my phone now with out doing each step again. Like if i use the backup feature in CWM, If i do a restore will that put it back the way it is now.
Thank you ALL !!!!!

That's the point of doing the Nandroid backup. It'll restore your phone to how it was. At least that's what it's supposed to do. I honestly can't attest to it because I've never had to do it *knock on wood*
alien build 5 is awesome! free wifi tethering!

[Q] Customizing Rom

hey im some what of a newb. ive been installing several diff roms and testing them out.
my question is can i use the add-ons and downloads at the end of rom posts for any rom? or are those specific to the roms that are posted?
ie i like the stock looking roms bc of the performance. but i like ICS rom bc of some of the animations. would i be able to install animation zips from seans ICS rom to a NeXusMOD, without screwing up my phone?
Thanks in advance!
Some ad ons work with some roms. Do a nandroid backup. And test them for yourself. But notball work on all roms. So if u cant find anything in a particular roms thread pertaining to it. Your going to have to just test it yourself.
it should say what rom it's available for... if not just assume that its for the rom it's posted under... cuz that's the way they do it most of the time anyways..
hey, can we get a bigger font? i have been drinking tonight and i cant read the OP
thanks for all the answers! i will be doing a lot of testing in the next few days. and yes sorry i did make that font a lil bigger than i needed too lol.

I would like a bare ROM with No Blur and fast as Hell..... (Oh and has to be able to keep the same battery life.)
If your asking.
At the moment there is only one functional ROM availble for the A2. It is a blur-based ROM called "Supercharged Atrix" made by one of our devs, lfaber06.
However jimbridgman is working hard on CM7, and lfaber is also working hard at updating the ROM with 2.3.6 and working out some other bugs/adding new features.
Both of the devs are really busy at the moment but they are trying their hardest to pump out some ROMs and other hacks.
If you do want to try a custom ROM then go ahead and try Supercharged (v4 currently). It is definitely faster and lighter, and you can overclock it.

We have been using safestrap instead of 2nd init, but, our other dev lfaber06 has been playing with 2nd init, and using it.... as for safestrap we both have our own modified copies that hashcode has not fully authorized for us to share. There is a copy that was authorized by him in the dev section that lfaber06 posted, but since he and I have been so busy it is not working well right now. If you want a working copy for the atrix 2, I can PM a link for you to grab it, but you CAN'T share it with the world, since it s my own modified version for the atrix2.
If you want to help with dev work, just PM lfaber06 and I so we are all not stepping on each others toes and wasting our time all working on the same things. He and I have split up the tasks pretty well, but we are swamped.
