[Q] Galaxy Skyrocket Custom Rom - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hello All,
I am a total newbie to all of this, I just bought a Galaxy s2 Skyrocket. I managed to find good info on how to root it and did that with something called superoneclick. So it is showing rooted with out the yellow triangle. Now for my question.
There are so many custom roms out there i have no clue what to do. All i am really looking for is a custom rom that will let me do the following if it is possible, wifi tethering, custom bootanimation and if it will let me overclock. And I guess something that is stable as i see mentioned on here a lot.
Anyway anyone that has time to help a newbie I would really appreciate it. There is a lot of great info on here but most of it is written for people that at least have a clue about this stuff.
Most of all i want to say thank you to anyone who is willing to help me in advance. And if you don't feel like helping a newbie I do understand that also.
Thank You

I like skyROCKeteer. It's a good, stable, custom rom. It'll suit all your needs. Check it out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19279400

First of all thank you for your reply. Am I reading this correct that I install version 2.0 and then install the addons and fixes? Or will everything be fine with the 2.0 and the fixes are already in there. Sorry to be so much trouble some of it is just confusing to me and I dont want to brick "i believe that is the correct term" my phone.
Thank You

SkyRocketeer and Sky Ice Cream Sandwich are pretty good. Next one I will be testing out will be the Red Sonja!

Red sonja is the best. Completly stable and fast. Vibrate does not work. But other then that its its perfect.

I'm using Super Stock 2.3.6. It's a rather bare bones ROM that is close to stock but with a few tweaks and removals of stuff like bloatware and other things. Overall I'm satisfied. I'm using this until the AOSP is released and some of the other ROMs become a bit more stable.

I'm using Sky Ice Cream Sandwich, it's my daily driver. Whichever rom you install, make sure you follow the dev's instructions. Only install roms for skyrocket, very important.

Most Roms in the Dev section are Stable-ish.
Red Sonja is probably the MOST stable in my OP.....less vibration, you dont have to do any work arounds, no extra flashing less the 4 intitial flashes( really 2 flashes if you dont want the comic pages)
but after that, everything is working as it would be on stock.

Thank You
First of all again thanks to everyone that gave me advise. I know have my first custom rom on my phone with the addons that looked interesting. Also a custom kernel.
I only have one question if i decide to try another rom, is there a way to go back to the way i have my phone now with out doing each step again. Like if i use the backup feature in CWM, If i do a restore will that put it back the way it is now.
Thank you ALL !!!!!

That's the point of doing the Nandroid backup. It'll restore your phone to how it was. At least that's what it's supposed to do. I honestly can't attest to it because I've never had to do it *knock on wood*

[Q] Please help im new and stuck! evo shift 4 g

Hi Everyone. I am trying to larn all this rooting and flashing thing! I have a rooted HTC Evo 4G. The Rom I am using is MIUI android 2.3.5 the kernel is 2.6.35.13-cyanogenmod. First off I need to know if this is the right rom to be using, I have a couple issues. One is that i dont have 4g anymore. Two is that my phone no longer works with my bluetooth in my car. Before it was rooted my phone hooked up to the car with no issues.
Most important like i said im tryng to learn, I had my phone rooted by someone else and have no idea how to flash a new rom or what I need to do so. So if someone could help me answer these questions and maybe direct me to where ever I need to go to learn, like flashing new rom for dummies! Thanks!!!
The reason your 4G isn't working is because it's not supported on MIUI. The ROM may be causing your bluetooth issue as well.
I can't really say if it's the right or wrong ROM, it's all about personal preference. You should probably look through the development section and see what ROM would best fit you. Also, there's several other threads on this section with people giving reviews/opinions of different ROMs..
As far as flashing ROMs, take a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266885

idk too much about miui because I dont use it.
MIUI does not support 4G as of yet (and may not ever) thats just something you lose.
As for the other issues I really don't know and can't help you with
To flash a new ROM you have to do these steps.
Download the ROM of choice
Put it on your SD Card (anywhere)
On your phone turn it completley off and hold down the "Volume Down & Power" at the same time
*From this point you use the volume keys to scroll up and down and power to select options*
Go to recovery and select it
once in recovery (you will be able to tell) go down to factory/data reset and click ok
Once that is finished go to wipe cache and select it
Once that is finished go to -advanced- then wipe dalvik cache and select it
once that is done go to "install zip from sd card"
then go to "choose zip from sd card"
find the ROM you downloaded and select it and flash.
Depending on the ROM it will take from 1-5 minutes to complete flashing. Once done just go to reboot at the top
It is also recommended to do the "wiping" steps 2-3 times (steps 7-9)

thank you for your help. I have been reading and reading and I have a better idea as to what i need to do. Im in the process of downloading Mikshifted v1.6. I did not see anything about weather it supports bluetooth or 4g, do you have a suggestion as to what rom does if this does not? And do i need a different Kernnal?
Thank you!
MikShifted G v1.6 is fully functioning. Everything works, 4G, Bluetooth, WiFi, WiFi Tethering, USB Tethering, everything works. Plus it has a lot of extras. One thing I will say it cannot at the present time be OC'd. No you do not need to flash a different kernel with it. Believe me when I tell you it does not need it.

Everything should be working with MikShifted ROMs, as far as I know. Also, there's no custom kernels for Gingerbread Sense ROMs until htc releases the source code.

Oc'd is just short for overclocked. Basically, until htc releases the source you can't use any overclocked kernels so you'll have to run at 800mhz, but MikG is surprisingly quick for running stock

You can oc (overclock) up to 2.0ghz (depending upon kernel and phone) with an AOSP ROM (no sense). Its all about personal preference.

Very true . Thanks to all the great Devs on the Shift community we have choices to suit our personal preferences .
another issue for the newbie!
I recently flashed the mik rom v1.6 and loved it everything went smoothly until i realized I am not getting any text messages. and before i go back to the miui rom I was using i figured I would ask if anyone else had this issue?
Thanks
I did switch the rom and still have the same issue any suggestions?
My personal preference for ROM is CyanogenMod (CM). It has everything a person can need and more, but its not noob friendly by any means (I learned that the hard way! Muchos thanks to Root Master Crump for taking me off the straight and narrow!). I've tried a few other ROMs and its really all about personal preference, as others have said. I like being able to customize out the wazzoo, but if you're looking for speed/performance and ease of use, Mik is very solid.

You could try updating your prl and see if that helps.I think it's probably an issue with Sprint and not the ROM though. Maybe post something in the MikG thread and see if others are having issues.
I have talked to sprint and its not on their end. I have doing alot of reading and not on answer on how to get my texting back. I tried going back to mIui and still not texts coming in. Im lost any ideas out there?
You need to update your PRL and Profile. Then reboot the phone, but you have to be on Sense to do that. Also, as soon as you finish the flashing process. Send yourself an SMS/MMS. Before you start loading things onto the phone. That way it will help you narrow down the issue. So your sure it's not something your loading on the phone causing the issue.

New G2X seeking advice

I got this phone recently and I'm experiencing some minor bugs and was wondering if it's worth it loading a custom mod to it.
It's currently running GB 2.3.3 stock
I have no experience at all doing anything regarding custom roms or kernels or whatever. Before I do anything with my phone I want to know the ups and downs to it and if it's worth it
The bugs I currently have are random reboots but this has only happened twice in about 5 days of use wifi calling sometimes gets a little *****y but it works (for this I had to get a older sim card TM 9073)
Is there a stable rom around that most g2x users are using ?

I only want my phone to be the most stable as possible with all it's features staying with 2.3.3+ I do a lot of gaming and run game emulators on it

Well if there was someone experienced kind enough to help me out through this process I would appreciate it a lot since I have no experience at all regarding this.
I do wish to know if there is a way to revert my G2X to its factory settings on the 2.3.3 in case I mess up etc
so.. everywhere I read says do this do that flash this and that... I can;t find anything detailed enough for someone who doesn't know what nvflash is or what it does or how to use rom manager etc
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715
specifies 2.2.2 I have 2.3.3 where am I suposed to start just flash and if so how?
I'm a complete noob on the android platform I need more details than just use this and that.
sorry for the noobness but I just want to get the hang of this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUT5JcnJHgk
Links are in the YouTuber's description... after that search for those 2.3.3 threads and pick one!
follow the steps in this link... to flash the latest CM Rom...
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/LG_G2x:_Full_Update_Guide
But i would recommend using a different method to root,
since you said you have never done any of this before
there are noob friendly ways to root such as the following link...
follow the directions in this link to root..
then just continue on the original CM link and start after the root section..
root here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039985
This phone is probaly one of the easiest phones to root and install cwm on, its 99.9% unbrickable and has tons of information in dev thread. Just take the time to read b4 you do anything, simple as that.

Apart from that It's a lot easier than I thought now just need to figure the gps thing out.
What country are you trying TeleNav in? And does google maps not work for you?
I agree. I'd usually use Google Maps Navigation. Has helped me quite nicely.
I already got it fixed apparently it was a corrupted rom. re downloaded and re installed and everything working nicely atm testing Hellfire phoenix this thing is awesome

Flashing CM10

Hi all,
I'm still fairly new to the rooting scene but am eager to flash Bruce's CM10 build currently in the developer section? Is there anything special I must do before I flash his rom? I am still on ICS firmware and running Venom 1.1.
Thank you,
Ryan
Im guessting that you are still unrooted. You will need to be s-off and rooted to flash cmx. Thee are tutorials all over the forums and on YouTube. Im away from my computer right now or else I would link you.

No. Nothing special.
If you're running Venon ICS you should be set up properly.
Just don't use Superwipe script to clear before flashing. Use the format all partitions except SD card option in 4EXT instead.
Be sure to make a backup of your Venom ROM first. CM10 is very much a Beta build. While it works pretty darn well, there are some quirks. You might not like it enough to keep it so make a backup.

On a side not, because I am curious, how come I don't have to upgrade my firmware to run Jelly Bean. Changing from Gingerbread to ICS I had to go through a whole process of downloading something I still don't understand.

First off...don't flash something you don't understand. Take the time to understand it. I promise it will pay off in the long run. As you understand more you'll be able to create your own combinations of different elements to really customize your ROM. Though fair warning, it's easy to get carried away and become a full fledged flashaholic!
Second, you don't need to upgrade firmware for JB because it's very similar to ICS. They work on the same firmware. Gingerbread was VERY different from ICS and the firmware was not interchangeable.

to root or not

ok my skyrocket is at android version 2.3.6. kernal 2.6.35.11 and baseband version 1727ucla3. my question is should i keep it like this or root it and go with custom rom. i had a infuse and was running the aeon 1..4sl rom on it and it was ok. was just curious as to what roms people like on theyre skyrocket. nothing really wrong with mine now its just plain as hell ya know. just want a rom that is stable and not glitchy as hell.
This is all personal preference my friend. Its your decision:thumbup:

I'm assuming you're running stock Gingerbread? I'm not sure how the stock AT&T ICS ROM was, but a lot of people that upgraded to the Rogers ICS ROM ran into performance issues (including myself). If you like your phone's configuration now, stick with it. If you think you're ready for something different, definitely check out some of the great ROMs around here.
For a while, I was on SkyICS. Great ROM, no issues whatsoever. I'm now running Liquid JB and, again, I haven't run into any issues with it. The devs here are awesome.
And I personally love the feeling of being free from bloatware. :good:

I'm not an expert or anything so I'd advise you to read the sticky threads, even watch some tutorials on YouTube. Get confident before you flash. I don't flash very often so I get sweaty-palmed whenever I do.
I don't think it matters what ROM you have right now. Just install a custom recovery with ODIN and you can get flashing to whatever ROM you like in the Skyrocket development forum. Again, read and reread the thread.
Have fun!
i will man , reading now . but thx for all the input
You should incrementally step up from gb, to ics, to jb. Doesn't matter if you do stock ICS or custom, but I remember reading from someone much smarter than myself, that you had to be on ics b4 jumping on the jb bandwagon.
I must say though, if you decide to make the jump to custom, no matter what rom you choose you should have a good experience. We have some really good devs here and interest seems to really be ramping up on the skyrocket forums lately. In just the last month or so, we've had 3-4 major roms go official for skyrocket, and we have some great ports and variants of others.
If you like a stock experience with a bit of customization and good tweaks, check out embryo or sky ICS. Both are VERY solid roms. Feeling a bit adventurous but wanna stick to ics? Try out aokp milestone 6 or cm9 stable. Feeling downright ready for a crazy fun experience, try out any of the jb ROMs on here. I have probably tried them all, and they are pretty dang solid. I'm currently running slim bean and its great so far, but others have been fantastic as well. Orthus is a battery beast! I was consistently getting 17 hours with 5-6 hours of screen on time with that one. Aocp is fun and offers a ton of customization options. CM10 is a pretty safe bet as well. Hell, they are all good! Just Try them and you'll find one you like.
Happy flashing!

Have you tried stock ICS yet? If not, give it a try before you flash another rom. You just may like it.
Stock ICS on my S3
its always best to do some reading before you do some flashing and customizing yes there gonna be some " hiccups" but thats even with factory software. In my opinion root is always best because it give you the capability as the user to modifiy your phone to how you want it not how the company who sells u it wants it. and coming from GB to ICS was better then candy at the birthday party battery performance, better response was awesome and now since im on JB i even find myself out performing even some of the more recent Stock phones.
ultimately its ur decision but until you actually experience the difference we can only tell you on ours.
Roms that performed well for me:
GB=NexusMod
ICS= Embryo and SkyICS
JB= Slim Bean
go nuts
ok i rooted it today and am currently on the gb nexus mod, seems pretty cool . i have a couple of questions and i hope they are not ridulous sounding. first my 4g icon is replaced with h+. i am not in a 4g area anyway so its not really an issue unless it shouldnt have changed. the other thing is i dont know how to get to my external sd card files now. i used to access it from apps/files folder/external sd. but now i cant find that either. once again no biggie just had a apps restore on it .i can redownload the from play store but i would rather not.

Jb roms aren't very stable. If you rely on your phone for work, alarms, and general stability I wouldn't use a jb Rom.

Will it be as simple as installing from .zip using clockwork?
Thanks for the help!

To use ICS roms you have to upgrade to ICS first.
As for roms, it's all personal opinion what is best. If HDMI/lapdock support isn't essential for you, I would recommend CM10.

Cm10 roms are not stable.you can update to stock pics and root your phone.then pimp it(using pimpmyrom) free in play store.

Uhh..no CM10 is actually really stable. There are a couple really minor bugs left.. but it's Jelly Bean so it's smooth as butter (project butter) and is well worth the tiny bugs.

yeah, cm10 is very stable.. no random reboots or anything for me.. sure it has a few bugs, but nothing to stop you from using it as your daily driver. Actually what keeps making me go back to cm10 is that its so friggin smooth and ofcourse the little customisations you can do and themes..
For the OP, I dunno much about the GB roms, but id recommend both cm10 and and magicmod with performance and customisations in mind and that they are JB based
If you want full functionality, then all the ICS roms are good, just read thru the threads for the ROMs and devs description and screenshots and try the one according to need.. the latest one is numa and the first one is SCV7 which still is one of the best roms for our phone on ICS. If you ask me, you'll know which one to use only after youve flashed enough
Also remember to read the devs description of the ROM and how to flash properly, cause you need to use different recoveries for different ROMs. So better if you read up as much as you can. Do keep a backup of your stock ICS on ur sdcard, (i have like 3 now stock, cm10, numa) but you know how it goes, since youre already on a ROM..
Mostly youre gonna love your phone more after you get on ICS and flash one of the ICS and JB roms. Happy flashing !
EDIT: i missed it, but better if you post questions in the Q&A thread..
Thanks for the reply. I'll try CM10.
When installing ICS, will all I need to do is install .zip Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.zip? for ICS leak#1 or will I have to downgrade first?

yes.. I got Optimus G Lets see how it works out. I was actually about to recommend your rom to this guy.. So was checking your both roms. Anyway We will meet again. I was off the development for sometime as I had SGS2 (I9100), It had so many roms that I did nothing. But Now as I'm on LGOG may be I might need to cook. if time permits.
anyway from my side a BIG THANK YOU to you and Jim.. for putting so much work on this tread.
I loved Victory Rom. I'm sad to hear there wont be another one for my A2
