[Q] Please help im new and stuck! evo shift 4 g - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone. I am trying to larn all this rooting and flashing thing! I have a rooted HTC Evo 4G. The Rom I am using is MIUI android 2.3.5 the kernel is 2.6.35.13-cyanogenmod. First off I need to know if this is the right rom to be using, I have a couple issues. One is that i dont have 4g anymore. Two is that my phone no longer works with my bluetooth in my car. Before it was rooted my phone hooked up to the car with no issues.
Most important like i said im tryng to learn, I had my phone rooted by someone else and have no idea how to flash a new rom or what I need to do so. So if someone could help me answer these questions and maybe direct me to where ever I need to go to learn, like flashing new rom for dummies! Thanks!!!

The reason your 4G isn't working is because it's not supported on MIUI. The ROM may be causing your bluetooth issue as well.
I can't really say if it's the right or wrong ROM, it's all about personal preference. You should probably look through the development section and see what ROM would best fit you. Also, there's several other threads on this section with people giving reviews/opinions of different ROMs..
As far as flashing ROMs, take a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266885

idk too much about miui because I dont use it.
MIUI does not support 4G as of yet (and may not ever) thats just something you lose.
As for the other issues I really don't know and can't help you with
To flash a new ROM you have to do these steps.
Download the ROM of choice
Put it on your SD Card (anywhere)
On your phone turn it completley off and hold down the "Volume Down & Power" at the same time
*From this point you use the volume keys to scroll up and down and power to select options*
Go to recovery and select it
once in recovery (you will be able to tell) go down to factory/data reset and click ok
Once that is finished go to wipe cache and select it
Once that is finished go to -advanced- then wipe dalvik cache and select it
once that is done go to "install zip from sd card"
then go to "choose zip from sd card"
find the ROM you downloaded and select it and flash.
Depending on the ROM it will take from 1-5 minutes to complete flashing. Once done just go to reboot at the top
It is also recommended to do the "wiping" steps 2-3 times (steps 7-9)
edit: damn crump you beat me to it

It's alright, you were a little bit more thorough and noob friendly on how to flash a ROM.

thank you for your help. I have been reading and reading and I have a better idea as to what i need to do. Im in the process of downloading Mikshifted v1.6. I did not see anything about weather it supports bluetooth or 4g, do you have a suggestion as to what rom does if this does not? And do i need a different Kernnal?
Thank you!

MikShifted G v1.6 is fully functioning. Everything works, 4G, Bluetooth, WiFi, WiFi Tethering, USB Tethering, everything works. Plus it has a lot of extras. One thing I will say it cannot at the present time be OC'd. No you do not need to flash a different kernel with it. Believe me when I tell you it does not need it.

Everything should be working with MikShifted ROMs, as far as I know. Also, there's no custom kernels for Gingerbread Sense ROMs until htc releases the source code.

Oc'd is just short for overclocked. Basically, until htc releases the source you can't use any overclocked kernels so you'll have to run at 800mhz, but MikG is surprisingly quick for running stock

You can oc (overclock) up to 2.0ghz (depending upon kernel and phone) with an AOSP ROM (no sense). Its all about personal preference.

Very true . Thanks to all the great Devs on the Shift community we have choices to suit our personal preferences .

another issue for the newbie!
I recently flashed the mik rom v1.6 and loved it everything went smoothly until i realized I am not getting any text messages. and before i go back to the miui rom I was using i figured I would ask if anyone else had this issue?
Thanks
I did switch the rom and still have the same issue any suggestions?

My personal preference for ROM is CyanogenMod (CM). It has everything a person can need and more, but its not noob friendly by any means (I learned that the hard way! Muchos thanks to Root Master Crump for taking me off the straight and narrow!). I've tried a few other ROMs and its really all about personal preference, as others have said. I like being able to customize out the wazzoo, but if you're looking for speed/performance and ease of use, Mik is very solid.

You could try updating your prl and see if that helps.I think it's probably an issue with Sprint and not the ROM though. Maybe post something in the MikG thread and see if others are having issues.

I have talked to sprint and its not on their end. I have doing alot of reading and not on answer on how to get my texting back. I tried going back to mIui and still not texts coming in. Im lost any ideas out there?

You need to update your PRL and Profile. Then reboot the phone, but you have to be on Sense to do that. Also, as soon as you finish the flashing process. Send yourself an SMS/MMS. Before you start loading things onto the phone. That way it will help you narrow down the issue. So your sure it's not something your loading on the phone causing the issue.

[Q] Rooted phone, now what?

Hi folks!
Very new noob here and very curious about what else I can do now that I've rooted my Inspire 4g. I used attn1 hack kit and it took me roughly 30 minutes to complete the root process.
So, first question is - I've noticed, and already read about it, that my wifi is no longer working and that I need to do something.....yes I'm a noob and I'm not sure what exactly I need to do to get my wifi feature working again.
Second - What else can I do now with a rooted phone other than the tethering/wifi hotspot features? Any cool apps? Any updated core (not sure of term) program that will replace the default image loaded with attn1 hack kit?
I'm honestly completely content with what attn1 hack kit did minus the wifi.
So basically looking to fix my wifi issue, i can connect to networks but can't use them, and also looking to tweak/speed up phone even more and load some cool apps.
I apologize for being a noob.
if you want, you can try the rom in my signature....
in all honesty, try every rom out there for your phone. see which one works for you
You have a lot you can do still, read around these forums, use the search, and read the stickies, they'll help you out a lot. The first thing I'd recommend looking into is flashing a new ROM (the "core program"), which should take care of your wifi problem.
Just remember, most questions you'll have have been answered at some point, always search a few different ways before posting multiple threads asking questions.
But good luck! Welcome to being rooted, once you learn what you can do you'll realize why everyone recommends it. As for root apps, ROM Manager is must have IMO, makes flashing a lot easier, Titanium Backup is good, Root Tools is pretty useful (although on some custom ROMs like CM7 there are easier ways to do most of the stuff it can do), and SetCPU if you want to overclock your CPU.
My favorite thing about being rooted, other than flashing roms, is setcpu. With a Rom that supports it, you can overclock and underclock. I underclock when the screen is off and it helps battery life immensely. Just be careful with overclocking. Some phones do better with it. I never overclock past 1.2 ghz.

Did you flash the stock ROM (w/ or w/o SL) from his thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
I was previously running it and didn't have any issues with WiFi.
The very first thing you need to do is flash a rom. The hack kit leaves you with the downgraded rom, which is strictly for the exploit during the root process. It is not intended to be left on the phone. You can flash back to the latest stock rooted rom or find a custom modded rom to try out.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Honestly you have tons of options. I have had a rooted phone for a long time and just now joined the site. I have been reading all the posts for months now and have gotten pretty good at it all. You first need to flash a new rom and learn how to tweak the base roms. Then once you master that, you will start flashing new radios and RILs. Then you will learn to mix and match kernals and roms. Then you will start to overclock and undervolt your cpu for performance enhancements and battery saving. There is a ton to do but reading the post in the development section will get you where you need to be. It will take some time but you will learn it all. Rom Manager is probably the most needed app of them all to start with.
Thanks for the replies folks!
I've gone and flashed my second rom! LOL...I know....what a young'en
I went with the Android Revolution ROM and I gotta say...loving the battery life so far...much better than stock.
I'm looking at changing the main theme and would like to go with the Code Red one. The pre reqs are - DEODEXED ROM, Root, S-Off, DHD Sense ROM, Clockwork Mod and ROM Manager.
So question - I now know that I've got all of the above met except for the DEODEXED ROM. Not sure what this is....I have searched the forums and wasn't able to come up with a clear answer as to what this means.
Oh...lesson learned...back up my contacts before I flash my next ROM. I lost it all! lol

all custom roms are deodexed. you do have to be careful when applying themes though. most of them are specific for a specific build of a rom. you cant always apply any theme to any rom

[ROM][CWM] Stock Deodexed KJ2 w/Root [11/1/11] - PDT

This is a Stock ROM for the KJ2 update that we never officially received. Its Deodexed and Rooted with the Modified recovery inside already, so you can use CWM.
Everything is Stock KJ2. The Kernel and Modem and everything else is untouched. Just rooted with the modded recovery, and deodexed.
Same install Method. Check mounts and remember to disable voodoo if you have it enabled or you'll soft brick (Remember this has a Stock Kernel!).

There may be various bug fixes, but there wont be anything MAJOR compared to the other stock ROMs. They are auto compiled and they dont give us a list of whats been addressed or not. You can try them out to see if you notice a difference, or if your happy with what you have keep it. Remember you can always make a backup and restore.

Still, cut the fat, keep the meat of the ROM. This phone (like most of them) runs really well when you tear out the garbage that Samsung/T-Mobile preloaded on it. I've been playing with Undead9k's KG2-based ROM the past few days and removed even more stuff from the ROM (and added a couple of things I wanted) and it finally 'feels' like the old Sidekicks did. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes from us having this update.
Got this flashed last night after some stupidity on my part. Thanks teddy for uping this! If you ever decide to release a bare bones version of this, I'd greatly appreciate it as I hate debloating ROM's. No T-Mobile stuff, no Amazon MP3, Books, and most of the Google crap (all but GMail, Marketplace, and Maps) removed.
This rom doesnt randomly force close like previous roms, nor does it reboot randomly either. Great job. Those were my only gripes with others, thanks!
Since install, this ROM hasn't bogged down on me at all. I only seem to have two small issues with it but if they could be eliminated, this would be a perfect stock ROM. After being plugged in to USB for a long period of charging, the phone can't play my custom ringtones. A reboot fixes this. The ringtone still shows there and the MicroSD is still mounted after being disconnected but even trying to reselect the same ringtone or another from the SD card just gives silence. Second issue is, heavy traffic causes data to fail. I can consistantly replicate this using Shazam to find song information. This does happen, as I said, only when the device is sending and receiving a lot of data. I'm going to try a different radio to see if this fixes that.
This is a literal stock rom, as being straight from Samsung, not just being in the design of stock. The only difference this has from stock is that it's deodexed and rooted, it's intended to be a base for those who like the stock system but want to be able to theme/mod it.

[Q] How to choose a ROM?

This is what I call a "high class problem". With so many ROMs to choose from, how does a noob like me decide. Aside from stability, we all probably have different wants and needs.
Can anyone who's checked out the majority of the available ROMs give the rest of us a rundown on the pros and cons of each ROM?
For myself, I'm looking for:
1. Basic
2. Reversible
3. No known issues with wifi, sms, battery drain, ciq, marketplace, etc.
Which one should I pic?

its close. if i have time this weekend you will see something drop. i have a few more tweaks i want to do before i consider it ready. internally, im already up to beta8, lol. i hope to have beta10 release as an RC1 for everyone.
From what I seen so far I seen no reason to try them though somebody has to or they never get fully debugged.
Some of the ROMs are AT&T only ..... sorry got SGH-I727R
Some of them do have Rogers ROMs but I read of Sleep of Death and losing LTE connection..... sorry too buggy and I NEED LTE or I would of got the Galaxy Nexus.
Finally what I really want is ICS and NOT ICS themed ROMs
None of them are for me but I check everyday when a ICS ROM comes out I will try it.
Finally I recommend you NEVER try Roms if you are not sure that you can restore.
I have backuped my ROMs, Apps and Data, APNs I am 95% certain I can recover from anything.
For that other 5% I have Odin and the orginal Rogers ROM
Just to agree with everyone else, you've got to try them out. There's no harm in it as long as you've done your nandroid back up, you're pretty safe when it comes to reverting back to your previous ROM and settings.
Reading the features and change logs for each of them helps alot... but it still doesn't give you a full grasp of what it has to offer until you flash and test it.

[Q] Galaxy Skyrocket Custom Rom

Hello All,
I am a total newbie to all of this, I just bought a Galaxy s2 Skyrocket. I managed to find good info on how to root it and did that with something called superoneclick. So it is showing rooted with out the yellow triangle. Now for my question.
There are so many custom roms out there i have no clue what to do. All i am really looking for is a custom rom that will let me do the following if it is possible, wifi tethering, custom bootanimation and if it will let me overclock. And I guess something that is stable as i see mentioned on here a lot.
Anyway anyone that has time to help a newbie I would really appreciate it. There is a lot of great info on here but most of it is written for people that at least have a clue about this stuff.
Most of all i want to say thank you to anyone who is willing to help me in advance. And if you don't feel like helping a newbie I do understand that also.
Thank You
I like skyROCKeteer. It's a good, stable, custom rom. It'll suit all your needs. Check it out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19279400

SkyRocketeer and Sky Ice Cream Sandwich are pretty good. Next one I will be testing out will be the Red Sonja!
Red sonja is the best. Completly stable and fast. Vibrate does not work. But other then that its its perfect.
I'm using Super Stock 2.3.6. It's a rather bare bones ROM that is close to stock but with a few tweaks and removals of stuff like bloatware and other things. Overall I'm satisfied. I'm using this until the AOSP is released and some of the other ROMs become a bit more stable.
I'm using Sky Ice Cream Sandwich, it's my daily driver. Whichever rom you install, make sure you follow the dev's instructions. Only install roms for skyrocket, very important.
Most Roms in the Dev section are Stable-ish.
Red Sonja is probably the MOST stable in my OP.....less vibration, you dont have to do any work arounds, no extra flashing less the 4 intitial flashes( really 2 flashes if you dont want the comic pages)
but after that, everything is working as it would be on stock.
Thank You
First of all again thanks to everyone that gave me advise. I know have my first custom rom on my phone with the addons that looked interesting. Also a custom kernel.
I only have one question if i decide to try another rom, is there a way to go back to the way i have my phone now with out doing each step again. Like if i use the backup feature in CWM, If i do a restore will that put it back the way it is now.
Thank you ALL !!!!!

[Q] Mods, Stable Rom/Kernel combos, Scripts ect?

Okay so I am new to the Nexus S 4g (crespo 4g) and i'm just wondering what some good ROM/kernel combos are, I'm currently running paranoidandroid and it's not bad but i want more speed, also the RAM on this phone isn't that great so are there any ram scripts available? and since there's no ext sd is there anyway to partition so i can move apps/data/cache to sd? I work so much I don't have time to thoroughly search for this info like I used to be able to... Thanks in advance
As far as the kernel goes, i have always stuck with matr1x. there are quite a few rom options out there but my top pics are AOKP and Euroskank kangs. Also Rascream is definitely worth checking out. I would recommend running the phone without scripts at first so you have a baseline then if you add scripts later, youll know if they are working or not later on. Not sure about moving apps/data/cache. good luck

Help!
I have been experimenting with a lot of ROMS on my Rooted Nexus S (I9023) and so far haven't been able to find a single stable ICS ROM!
Frustrated with my experience, I went back to stock GB ROM which has now got automatically upgraded to ICS (4.0.4).
However, since the time the ICS upgrade has been done, I am unable to flash clockwokmod recovery on my phone! Even superuser permissions don't seem to work!
Can someone please help me with this problem & also suggest a stable ICS ROM with everything working?
Thanks!

hi mate, I've been running Codename 2.0 for past 3 months ( prior JB), never had a single issue, no reboots and other crap, only issue is that ur start up tweaks don't stay after reboot.
Btw rom has been left without support.
