Hello I am new to this forum, I just got the Samsung galaxy s 4g this Wednesday and I was wondering if anyone else was having battery issues. Right now I have my phone set to minimum brightness, auto sync off, black bckground and juice defender on. So I don't understand why am I getting only about 3 hours of battery life when all I'm doing most of the time is surfing the web(this forum) and facebook. I even get better battery life from my dads vibrant which is completely stock, has auto sync on, no juice defender, and screen brightness set to 50%. From reading the stats of both phones, the vibrant 4g is supposed to have a slightly better battery. I also don't understand why if the screen is at the minimum it still takes up 94% of the battery whereas on my dads vibrant 50% screen brightness takes up 30%. Is there anything I can do? Will wiping the battery stats help? If so how do I do that from a stock unrooted vibrant?

Check your notifications settings. I know that Samsung's contacts integration with social networks takes a big toll on the battery, hence why I've disabled it. Also, disable T-Mobile's Contact Backup Sync, just use Google's contacts integration.
Thanks for helping, but yeah I have those disabled already.

No, I charged mine this morning at 630AM, and I have been playing with it all day. It is currently 610PM, and I am at 60% still. Seems pretty good to me.

Does the trick to fully discharge and recharge 3 times work with these batteries? According the the Li-on technology this is not supposed to be necessary but I've heard stories in the forums of folks getting great battery life on other phones after doing this. Many people also say their batteries work a lot better after a week of use (supposedly after "training" them as well.)
I believe the G2 is clocked down for this reason. You could try CPU-set app, clocking down to 500-800mhz when not gaming.
Anyone tried these tricks?

Will ill try to cycle charge the vibrant and use it for a week, and ill try out cpu set. if this doesn't improve I'm definitely returning this phone. I had soo much expectation for this because I have seen people getting up to 24 hours. I can't even get halfway through the day barely using the phone.

Auto brightness on GPS on sync on 20 texts 30 min playing games 20 min on Facebook now on xda app for 15 min. And standby for 3 hours... currently at 80%. Also have hepatic feedback on the Mtm gingergread keyboard. If that matters.

I got my replacement 4g today. Hopefully ill have better results. I have a question for those of you that are getting really good battery life, are you running juice defender or something similar in the background? Maybe that's a factor in why I've been getting terrible battery.

Im having the same issue with battery life.. for me its a deal breaker.. I use my phone pretty heavily for keeping up with email and a little web browsing as well as talking quite a bit.. My iPhone 3Gs lasted me all day of heavy use and with the SGS4G I have to charge the damn thing at least once a day with light usage and if I have to be on the phone a lot then its twice a day.. Not acceptable at all...
Thats with wifi and gps disabled..
On the 3Gs I had wifi, bluetooth and the gps running all the damn time...
Took my phone off charge at 6:30 this morning haven't put it on charge yet at 88% never had this much juice with the nexus one.

I'm not having any issues with battery life or heating. I use wifi teather most of the day and I'm getting to use it all day without issue. I did cycle my battery 4 times already just in case it matters. FYI
The batteries that our phone uses DOES NOT require u to cycle the battery. In fact, doing so will harm your battery. To avoid damage to your battery always charge ur phone when u r at <15% battery level. Trust me I thought the same until I did the research. I will post more info when I get on my PC later.

I just bought a Galaxy S 4G on wednesday. First android device coming from iphone 3G. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to preserve the battery life.
I took it off the charger at 6:30am and the battery was at about 2% at 8:30pm.
I haven't rooted the phone yet to remove some of the bloatware that comes pre-installed.
I've got email accounts synching, brightness set at about 10% w/ a static wallpaper. Played about an hour of angrybirds throughout the day and didn't really do any web browsing with a few phones calls. I mean 14 hours is decent but from what I've read there are plenty of people getting a full day of use and still have 50% battery left.
I guess once the battery fully charges I'll put inception on, turn off syncing and try a few other things.
So I guess I said all that to say this, my battery life isn't great but it's not downright horrible either. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
And yes I'll continue browsing all the forums to see what else I can find.
Edit:
Played through half of Inception in airplane mode, brightness at minimum. I dropped from 93% to 80% in an hour and a half. Not too shabby.
Also created a shortcut to toggle between 4G modes and Edge. I know 4G is going to be a pretty big drain so I'll see how much that helps.
I'll keep tweaking it.
this is completely true and if you read the manual on page 13- h t t p:// downloadcenter . samsung . com/content/UM/201102/20110224044646930/T959_Galaxy_S_4G_English_User_Manual.pdf it says that
"• Do not wait until your battery is completely depleted before charging
your device. Repeating this process of a complete discharge and
recharge can over time reduce the storage capacity of any battery."
right now my phone is at 23% battery level with up time of 46:46:40 hrs/mins/secs. with skype calling (around 10 minutes), text messaging, browsing the net (for around 5 minutes about 6 times a day), and talking on the phone (around 15 minutes)
the settings i did:
1. took a picture with my finger blocking the camera to get pitch black picture and set that as my background and deleted all the shortcut icons (i short, i only have a blank screen with the only 4 icons down below)
2. changed the brightness settings to 2 clicks to the right from 0% brightness (or you can lower your brightness all the way down during the night, and 2 clicks away during the day, this will save you more)
3. disabled haptic feedbacks and audible touchtones, selections, and screen lock sounds
4. disabled animations
5. disabled background data and syncing when not in use
6. disabled packet data (3g), wifi, and gps when not in use
the last two are the biggest settings that made my battery last longer.
7. i only charge my phone when it gets to 20% and the manual recommends not to use the phone while charging
i hope this helps.
and yes it is recommended to charge your battery to 100% before you turn on your phone for the first time and this is also stated on the manual.
one more thing, don't forget to set your browser's brightness setting as well

Today it happened again, my battery is around 30%, I let it charge, I decide to turn the phone off and on again. When I turn it on, it suddenly shows it's 68% charged. Again I feel, I have lost the ability to fully load my battery since it now thinks it's full while it should be full an hour of charging later.
Can anyone tell what the hell is going on?

If your phone is rooted, you can try to re-calibrate the battery by:
Charge the phone normally until it says Charged on the lock screen (you can turn on wi-fi in order to get more "fully" charge)
Turn off the phone, it will continue charging. Wait until the battery icon does not animate anymore (press Power button once to see the charging progress)
Turn on the phone, use adb shell or Root Explorer (or File Expert) and navigate to /data/system/
Delete the file named batterystats.bin
Reboot the phone
You can wipe battery stats in recovery, under the advance menu.

When my battery jumps I just keep using the phone until it dies and then recharge it. Crazy thing is, when it jumped from 12% to like 30%, my phone operated for a few hours while I texted and gamed on it so I don't really care that much. I have also yet to see any signs of deterioration.

Just one question, that puzzles me; why you don't want to root you phone?! Rooting is no biggie. And given the fact that this is a big prob for you, I suggest that you give it a try.
Hello All,
does anybody noticed the increased power consumption after the last official update (3.2.1)? Below is my battery chart after just one day. The most interesting part is when I didn't used tablet in last couple of hours, as you can see no WiFi, screen, pad not awaken and... battery draining as hell. On detailed battery usage screen Android OS was on the top with 38% then WiFi 15% and screen 12%
Before update battery life was ok (My TF is early hardware, stock OS, no root etc.). After update I didn't changed anything, same configuration, no new software, updates etc. Just rebooting two times because tried to get rid of another 3.2.1 bug aka "mobile browser"
I appreciate that Asus is quick to pushing updates to TF, but this time they did it too fast.
Does anyone have a similar problem, or is it just my update went wrong?

You are going to want to charge your battery to 100 and use the battery calibration app in the market...called battery callibration. Do the instructions it tells you.
You might want to install CPU spy and see what is running in the background to drain your battery like that.

This is a real bug. Here's a screenshot I just took from my tablet. Tell me you don't see something strange with Android OS taking up 26% of the power.
That's 83% battery life left over 4 hours of me using it for about 30 minutes total.
You may want to observe the non-sleeping time using "cpuspy" from Markets. Quite revealing...

Right...that's part of the problem with the new firmware..it never goes into a deep sleep. Not sure if it did previously, but the battery life since 3.2.1 is definitely bad
indeed i've seen a noticeable drop in the battery as well and was beginning to worry. hopefully someone comes up with a solution
I have no issues with battery drain after updating.
Did you double check that GPS didn't get enabled? Have you tried a factory reset after updating? Yeah, I know it's a pain in the ass, but it's not so difficult to get everything running again after hard resetting.
Regards.
Hi, I've noticed the same battery drain since the update , just bought the keyboard and was enjoying the added battery life ,but last night the pad and keyboard drained flat in seven hours while it was meant to be sleeping like me. It seems looking at the battery info that the wifi and system never shut down and does'nt even when charging :-(
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
@CalvinH ,
Good points to check, but I was wondering if you are using the keyboard ,and that is perhaps why some people are not having issues, could it be a keyboard bug again. I will try without and see if there is any difference.

Battery life has not been as good and also when playing music with google music it freezes sometimes and reboots wtf asus
I am getting random reboots as well, after 3.2.1 update. Twice now while the tablet was just sitting there on the table, suddenly the ASUS boot logo pops up.
I have always had problems with ActivityManager killing background tasks a little too aggressively, and so I wondered if it was killing things it shouldn't, now and then. (It does occasionally kill the wifi supplicant process, which should never happen.) But the reboots never happened before the latest update.
My battery life is significantly worse since the update. Before, in 12 hours of sitting idle, it would go through about 20% of battery. Today, it went through 70% in 13 hours of idle.
Wow sorry to hear that guys. For once mine has good battery life again! It was good, then after the last few updates it was reaaallly bad. Now it can go days, but it seemed like it got better right before the update?! Either way its better now.

Battery Management
Hi, all.
I want to pass this tip along to anyone who want or need to conserve their battery for what ever reasons.
I have gone usually 3 day+ on one charge.
I'm running on stock rom. Froyo 2.2.1
It is rooted though
I use the phone moderately. Text occasionally.
I downloaded an app called "DataSwitch" by TomatoX.
I use wifi when I'm at home or work.
I have dataswitch activated when I don't need constant background data. ?I turn it on when I need to use it for surfing and such.
In Settings, there is also a toggle for background on/off, although I don't use this much.
With the data off, you can still get phone call and text msg.
I usually turn off data and wifi at bedtime.
On the third day, I'm usually down to 35%.
This may also be useful if you are low and can't get to a charge right away.
It may not apply to everybody, but it works for me..esp with only a 200mb data plan. Battery life is great!
lol look at that cell standby use your phone lol

Good one. But next time on, it would be more useful if you post the screenshots showing call duration and display time. With just this one screenshot it could have display on for just 5 mins or 50 mins. Its hard to tell.
Just now noticed, the tiny green bars in the screenshot (circled in red) come up when the phone is charging.
I noticed that (at least for my phone) if you connect it to wall charging it would reset the "time on battery" count but if i connected it via usb to pc it was charging, yeah slowly maybe but the timer never reset when connected via usb as if the phone said "well im charging but it doesnt counts since the guy its transfering data"(lmao yeah my phone is smart) so if you wait for 10% battery ans then go usb mode and charge it and use it and repeat i once got displaying 4 days 10 hours on battery haha.
While on my real stats my phone never last more than 18 hours ;/

I got my phone to say 2 days 15 hours once. As long as I don't charge it 100% the time on my battery continues to go up. I can plug it in while it has 10% left charge it till its 90% unplug it, and the time won't reset.
If anyone mistook my comment, I'm not really interested in claiming any specific record as the op as stated.
I simply meant to share my thoughts on "dataswitch" app and how I had applied it.
I think found it useful to limit data usage and to conserve the battery when I can't get a charge right away.
You'll be surprise how much battery life background data consumes.
The other part tech part of me also recognizes that battery memory exist...it may be best to "widen" your charge range (0% to 100%) when possible.
Well, I figured out what caused that.. My radio in my truck has a USB port that I plug my phone into to listen to my music. Worked great on my Ipod but it wouldn't charge my Ipod. However today when coming home, I plugged my phone in and it doesnt show to be charging, but when I looked at the Battery Use chart, it deffinately showed an increase.

been on bamf final for several months. battery fully charges and then goes from 100 to sudden reboot after 5 minutes or so. After reboot, battery is usually at 3-10 or so. No sudden reboots while plugged in. Awaiting a new battery from ebay. Any other ideas what this might be?
Id guess its battery mostlikely. If that dont fix it, unroot back to stock, see if it still does it, then call in.

I hear a new battery might fix it.
Occasionally I'll look and see my phone battery has gone from 84% to 71% or something drastic like that- I look at the battery use graph and see a random and no-slope dropoff, happens when the phone screen is off, not in use at all.
Otherwise expect a reboot to suck 10%-20% of your battery.
OP here -- new battery in and working fine.
