Terrible battery life after 3.2.1 update. - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
does anybody noticed the increased power consumption after the last official update (3.2.1)? Below is my battery chart after just one day. The most interesting part is when I didn't used tablet in last couple of hours, as you can see no WiFi, screen, pad not awaken and... battery draining as hell. On detailed battery usage screen Android OS was on the top with 38% then WiFi 15% and screen 12%
Before update battery life was ok (My TF is early hardware, stock OS, no root etc.). After update I didn't changed anything, same configuration, no new software, updates etc. Just rebooting two times because tried to get rid of another 3.2.1 bug aka "mobile browser"
I appreciate that Asus is quick to pushing updates to TF, but this time they did it too fast.
Does anyone have a similar problem, or is it just my update went wrong?

I get 7 hrs of hardcore usage, as for a day odds of charge, lucky u, how long where u getting before cause im impressed ;-)

Yeah really impressive, battery from 40% to 0 in just 16 hours of doing nothing .
But to satisfy your curiosity, I had around 7-8 hours of continuous use with WiFi and screen on.

lol sorry for not reading properly, i only got my eeepad on sun and updated straight away to 321, so its all i know at the mo, iv also got a b70 so im patiently waiting for root,

You are going to want to charge your battery to 100 and use the battery calibration app in the market...called battery callibration. Do the instructions it tells you.
You might want to install CPU spy and see what is running in the background to drain your battery like that.

This is a real bug. Here's a screenshot I just took from my tablet. Tell me you don't see something strange with Android OS taking up 26% of the power.
That's 83% battery life left over 4 hours of me using it for about 30 minutes total.

You may want to observe the non-sleeping time using "cpuspy" from Markets. Quite revealing...

Can you see the actual apps or processes running with cpuspy? All I can see is a horizontal bar graph with percentages of different frequencies

You are right. No apps shown. But it shows a bar indicating the duration the cpu spent in deep sleep - this is useful for me.
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium

Right...that's part of the problem with the new firmware..it never goes into a deep sleep. Not sure if it did previously, but the battery life since 3.2.1 is definitely bad

indeed i've seen a noticeable drop in the battery as well and was beginning to worry. hopefully someone comes up with a solution

I have no issues with battery drain after updating.
Did you double check that GPS didn't get enabled? Have you tried a factory reset after updating? Yeah, I know it's a pain in the ass, but it's not so difficult to get everything running again after hard resetting.
Regards.

Hi, I've noticed the same battery drain since the update , just bought the keyboard and was enjoying the added battery life ,but last night the pad and keyboard drained flat in seven hours while it was meant to be sleeping like me. It seems looking at the battery info that the wifi and system never shut down and does'nt even when charging :-(
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium

@CalvinH ,
Good points to check, but I was wondering if you are using the keyboard ,and that is perhaps why some people are not having issues, could it be a keyboard bug again. I will try without and see if there is any difference.

Battery life has not been as good and also when playing music with google music it freezes sometimes and reboots wtf asus

I am getting random reboots as well, after 3.2.1 update. Twice now while the tablet was just sitting there on the table, suddenly the ASUS boot logo pops up.
I have always had problems with ActivityManager killing background tasks a little too aggressively, and so I wondered if it was killing things it shouldn't, now and then. (It does occasionally kill the wifi supplicant process, which should never happen.) But the reboots never happened before the latest update.

My battery life is significantly worse since the update. Before, in 12 hours of sitting idle, it would go through about 20% of battery. Today, it went through 70% in 13 hours of idle.

Wow sorry to hear that guys. For once mine has good battery life again! It was good, then after the last few updates it was reaaallly bad. Now it can go days, but it seemed like it got better right before the update?! Either way its better now.

Battery prob is now worse!

I'm rooted first of all.
Well, wifi, all GPS, and bluetooth off.
my battery was okay, it lasted for a day mostly. and I think about 2 days ago, the battery suddenly getting worse. Everything remains same. I haven't changed any option, but the bettry is suddenly worse.
I don't use my phone that much. like I got a phone call yesterday and today? no texting, no internet, no app uses.
I charged my battery full(til 11am or til noon), then it dies before 5pm.
(Today I charged my phone til 9:40am, got only one single phone call lasted 1-2mins, and my battery is already 47%.)
It's just terrible! Anyone has same prob????
I'm in California BTW.

I'm rooted and I think it's stock rom.
I just followed the manual perm root process.
It's weird because under same conditions, battery got totally worse than before. It lasted at least for a day, but now, it lasts only 4-5 hrs with same amount of usage under same conditions.
ever figure this out?
Just rooting will not change anything to your battery life. You need to install a rom or a different kernel in order for it to change anything.
Mine too has gotten worse in the last week. I am not rooted. At this point my battery is draining roughly 25% per hour with little or no use. Spare parts shows the most usage on my phone is 0. I have tried getting rid of weather bug, Pandora and sirius. I tried looking for something to explain exactly why 0 takes up 10x more battery than Android system itself and I have came to the conclusion that I am lost. Any direction to the correct forum topic would be appreciated.

Have you tried the "Blockbuster" mod?
1) open the Blockbuster Application, it should ask you to update.
2) once the update has finished open the application back up and
3) navigate to Menu>Settings> "Disable Movie Updates"
Users have reported better battery life.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I have updated and disabled the Blockbuster app. Better yet even I just rebooted my phone and it drained 12% on the battery. How is that possible. I am using my stock battery now and not the extended, so the % would be different with the stock compared to my extended but really I don't think it should use 12% on a reboot.

All GPS was off, bluetooth off, Wifi off, everything off except 4G. I sent a text and received a text, and the battery drained to 46%. After a few mins with no use of the phone, the battery warning sound played. So I had to charge my phone at that point. It is just totally weird. Under same condition and same usage of the phone, the battery lasted for a day at least. (4G was on at the point.) I don't know what cause this problem. Anyways, I just unrooted mine and got a software update via OTA. I don't know if this will fix the problem. Any luck to you yet?
I am going to charge tonight and try current settings tomorrow and see how long battery last. It is to the point if I have to turn all this stuff off, doesn't it defeat the purpose of having a smartphone?

Just yesterday my battery life took a serious nose dive. I've adjusted all the settings I can and the battery is dropping like a drunk girl's panties...
I'm having to charge it all the time now just to keep it from giving me the low battery warning.

That's about what mine took on average to reboot. 10-12%.
I'm at 72% after 11 hours of idle usage and that's on the 2750mah extended battery. That would put me at 46% after 12 hours having not touched the phone once. I literally fell asleep as I took it off the charger...
Something is jacked up and I don't know what.
Rooted, Virus ROM B3, 1.8G kernel (forget which).
I've gone to Imoseyon's Sense lean kernel, special edition.
We'll see how that goes...?
Wanted to report back as I think the culprit may be the wireless tether app.
I turned GPS, WiFi and all my sync's back on and the phone is back to giving me decent battery life.
I did some changes with the tether app and I'll report back to see if my suspicions are correct.

has battery greatlly increased since ics or is it just me

hi im on 98% on tablet plus 10% on dock, this is after using it in university for 13 hours straight with constant use of ezpdf reader and editing. wifi has not been used so much. 1 or 2 hours give or take
i deacivated alot of bloat apps and gmail. Using two widgets and background services set to 2 maximum. Static preinstalled wallpaper and force gpu rendering enabled.
this maybe not be a big thing for you guys, but before ICS my dock would run out in max 3 hours with minimal use, to get 13 hours is a god damn miracle.
anyone else noticed the increase of battery?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Yeah most people are whining about battery life, mine has gone WAY up.
Also, i saw people complaining on a huge % drop over night... last night mine went up! 83% when i put it down for the night, 90% when i woke up. I'm guessing its still calibrating. Now after 1hr use its back down to 84%.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Mine's been awesome too, I'm running stock rooted ICS and I get battery life that usually takes a custom rom to get, used to run Revolver and got great battery life with that, but the stock ICS has equaled it for sure, 2 full days with moderate use and I was down to 35% this morning, probably could have made it most of the day again with what was left but decided to charge it up anyways.
Same here. For me I think ICS has improved my battery. At least when not using it. Overnight on HC would consume more. Happy in that department but will need an entire week for a veridict
Not just you. My unit's battery life sucked for a while, but after the update it's become better by an order of magnitude.

My sense is that if battery life has increased, it is only so how much is uied n sleep mode. When using the tablet it seems to drain as before. It could also be an issue or bug where there is a lag in ICS reporting battery life that did not exist in HC which makes it seem like battery life is better.

Battery on this device getting worse?

I've had this device since September and I've almost always been unsatisfied with the batter but now it's even worse! I charge it every day just for some slight use and I think it's unacceptable compared to what's promised. Anyone else noticing the same? I've lost 10%/hour and most of the time being idle.

Also my device is locked and not rooted.

A couple of things to think about:
At home, on my Wireless N connection, my tablet lasts even longer than 1 day and a half with light use. I am currently on vacation in Hawaii, and have noticed a faster drain - and here I am on Wireless G. Could be a factor. So could your router itself.
Also, if you create drafts in GMail and save them, the Gmail app checks every 5 min for changes. Don't know why, but it does. I think it is by design.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Infinity TF700 running Android JB (rooted) via Tapatalk

How's your battery stat, after cyanogenmod 10 flash.

So i was wondering if anyone else have noticed the battery drain in cyanogenmod10, i know that there's an issue with that, but i didn't find any tread about that, and i wanted to know what is considered to be, well let's say normal drain in that rom. . I didn't want to start a whole new thread, but thats life. You learn from the others.
Since no one have said anything, here is what mine - charged it on sunday, it last till today with normal usage, made phone calls over gsm, 3g video calling with skype ,normal internet browsing over 3g and over wifi, such as posting in the forum, readig news downloading files and also playing games for 30 min, wich was the reason to charge it ( from 27 % to 14 - in 30 min playing fifa). So i've noticed something else, my charging time now is less, i used to charge the tablet from around 7-9 hours, sometimes even more , and now it was charged for 4-5 hours.,
I think that battery drain is something really difficult to follow. You better install some application like cpu spy, better battery stats or such and present us with number and use patterns, so we can see if something is wrong.

Dude, not much of information there. I meant you to use the applications betterbatterystats and cpuspy.
But if you battery decreased that much and pretending you didn't use it at all, that seems something is preventing you tab from deepsleeping, and you may use the apps I recommended to known what.

Play a little bit more with it, betterbaterystats is way more powerful then that. Kernel wave locks, partial wavelocks, cpu states, process and such.
Do some tests, stress tests and comparations, there are a lot of stuff between cyanogen and heavy battery drain. To assume it is cm is one of late things you do.

I wouldn't believe someone actually pulling a month on a single charge (since that is what a 20% decrease in a week implies!). I run about three days on a charge, and that's with the dock attached. (EDIT: I can easily drain the tablet+dock combo in a few hours of heavy (graphical) use.)
You can join in here:

to see if there's an app going haywire. Most of the actual "bad battery life" cases have a rogue app.
well this person said it wasnt on screen off time. noooooo use
Stand alone tablet without dock? And WiFi on or off? If WiFi is on and it's standalone tablet 20% seems to be fine for a whole day.

So it is possible.

Hmm? Looks the same to me. You mean the new default launcher that ASUS thankfully doesn't ship with by default?
Same as OP
I have the same problem as OP with 4.2 but I have the keyboard dock. I can leave my tf700 for 2-3 days without using it and come back and its dead. This is from a 80-90% charge. I think there must be something with the deep sleep not kicking in.
I am thinking of looking back at the build prop to see if that helps with deep sleep. I have wifi off, gps off, brightness down. I did have location services on but figured I could so that's news to me and the only other thing I have is a moving wallpaper. Could those to really be causing all this drain? There has to be some way of getting deep sleep to truely sleep deep and shut down everything..

New app to help with deep sleep
I just installed DS battery saver pro and I am hoping it will actually help with deep sleep. I had power switch but it did nothing but pop up and bother me and never actually shut anything down. I am hoping this app will actually do what it says it can do and shut down all apps and everything when the screen is off.
I am having the same problem since the 4.2 update. I charge my tablet+dock and after 2 days of standby ONLY - no more juice. Everything turned OFF, never touching the tablet.
Any way to downgrade back to 4.1?

Yes, you can just flash the 4.1 firmware to downgrade. The 4.2 bootloader works fine with the 4.1 rom.
Don't forget to wipe cache and dalvic. If you have problems afterwards you may have to do a factory reset and re-install your apps.
There's a guide somewhere, I believe in the General Discussion section, on downgrading.

Nope - everything fine here. The battery seemed to drain very fast after I flashed the first 4.2 rom. But after a few charge/discharge cycles everything seems to be honky dory.
Took a fully charged tablet/dock off the charger about 16 hours ago. Did the usual surfing, reading the forums, email etc, watched a couple of episodes of Breaking Bad, downloaded the latest Cromi-X rom and installed it with mods - I would call it a day of light use.
The dock s now at 9%, the tablet at 90%.
Your battery calibration may be totally off. Have you tried this:
Let the tablet drain to almost 0%, connect it to your PC via USB cable and make sure the PC is on and not going to hibernate or sleep. Let the tablet trickle charge all night - at least 8 hours.
That seems to have helped in some cases....
