HTC GPL Violations - We need your sign! - Android General

Hey people with the HTC smartphones out there,
HTC is very often violating the GNU General Public License by releasing the kernel sources not in a reasonable timeframe. That's why I started a thread in the HTC Desire S section to set up a letter to HTC. Everyone can sign it and the more, the better.
You can find the OP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767801
I'm looking forward to see your sign on the letter
Greetings,
KanocX

we reached more than 130 signatures! keep going!

Marketplace feedback

Hi everyone.
The marketplace is an important part of every enthusiast forum and I'd rather buy from someone in a forum I read than from ebay.
Unfortunately rotten apples exist everywhere.
Is there any possibility to have a marketplace feedback thread stickied in the market place forum?
What i have in mind is a very simple list with the names of the people who have engaged in a transaction as a seller/buyer/swap and in green successfull deals and red scams.
Ie:
Deni_alb buyer [green]3[/green]
After a transaction we can notify a mod to update the thread.
Thanks
Deni

Why are KDKobes' and Virus' threads under investigation?

Sorry if this is already answered somewhere or something, but I'm just confused. I see new posts are being put in the threads, but when I click it I'm redirected to a different page saying the thread is under investigation.
Thanks to anyone who gives me some info!
Not sure but another reason my time spent here is getting more sporadic. This TB forum is getting boring lol.
I've mostly moved on at this point... I just check xda for random updates but mostly just lurking now. Its a shame really... Used to be a lot better around here.
This post is infected with Gingeritis 3D. There is no known cure at this time.

There are good reasons.
I believe it's because they aren't in compliance with the GPL license under which the Linux kernel is distributed, which requires making source code available when you distribute a binary. Seems to be pretty common for Android developers to ignore their obligations. There's a lot of ego involved, too. Even though 99.99% of the kernel is code that others provided to them via an open source license, they want to keep the modifications they've done away from others.

^ this is why to a tee and it's why my thread was closed. i told you guys **** was about to go down... it's because the ziggy kernel is not gpl complient and i posted it and virus uses it in his roms.
edit: his thread is open, i dunno what you guys are talking about.
What about all the original TB roms that were created before the kernel source wasnt released to the public?
What about all the other phones running roms without the manufacturer source code?
Why don't you guys ask the dev at hand? PM him without posting another thread about it.
Closed.

The GPL

Over time I've become known by some as being a hardass for making GPL compliance an issue. I've also taken sever members to task for their ass-backwards opinions concerning GPL. I was just visiting Rootzwiki and came across a thread that addressed the removal of download links for a ROM from a dev many of us know; Ching51o. Why? Because he packs Ziggy's non-compliant kernel in his ROMs. That defies the rules of Rootzwiki AND XDA-Developers.
I want to post the thread here for everyone to read. Adrynalyne, another well known dev around here, makes many good points, as do the moderators. Their positions should be the positions of anyone involved in open source GPL software in any way. The mods at Rootzwiki took what appears to be appropriate and fair action against distributing non-compliant software.
The Rootzwiki thread
I'd also like to ask XDA why their enforcement regarding the posting of non-compliant GPL material differs from Rootzwiki's (as in, XDA doesn't enforce it), even though the policies of both are virtually identical.
No disrespect intended here. Like I said, I've been a hardass about the GPL and I don't plan to stop. The GPL is the reason this forum exists and we ALL need to realize that. We also need mods that will act in it's interest and take some simple measures to respect it.
I for one agree that I've seen inconsistencies in the way XDA enforces GPL. DJ_Steve was a dev in the Dell Streak 7 forums who left because the mods were on him regarding the source code for his kernel. He couldn't produce it so he left. I was annoyed that he had to take his work elsewhere but I understood. On the flipside however, I've seen multiple roms package ziggys kernel and there appears to be no backlash. I'm not trying to started anything either but was is XDA's official position on this? Whatever it is it should be universal.

Then a mod will move it. Will they not?

In my experience, no, not unless it's pointed out to them. My post alone, unless a mod happens to read the thread, won't make any difference.

I have personally posed that question to two or 3 moderators and at least one administrator via PM and I've never gotten a response.
Their response, I've seen frequently, is that they can't keep track of everything and count on members for help. Well.... If you've pointed it out and nothing is done, it's all talk on their part.
Regarding forum rules the link to rootzwiki's site should be removed.

Why? XDA links are posted on Rootz. Rootz does not require registration to view so....no rule is being broken.

To paraphrase Mr. Torvalds, "Talk is cheap. Show me the rule." It ain't there.
Xda links on RW is fine.
From Xda's rules
•Encouraging members to participate in forum activities on other phone related sites is prohibited.

The link to a thread at Rootzwiki was for "reference". It's hardly "encouraging members to participate" !!

Since the thread I posted is closed, participation is impossible. If you assume that to mean linking to a site that has anything to do with cell phones in a fashion that could be interpreted in some way to be XDA competition, you're wrong. XDA cannot exist in a vacuum and they know it. XDA is interested in the traffic. Besides, I bring XDA more traffic than that link will ever send to Rootzwiki.
Ya know this is starting to be like the howard stern show, why
I wanna see what u guys are going to text next.

I've tried the same with no replies. They just sort of "cherry pick" which software should follow the GPL (and remove from xda) and which they will overlook.
XDA is a strong believer in, and does enforce, the GPL, and has been very unpopular in the past for doing so. I will admit, however, that sometimes GPL issues are slow to resolve, including the issue mentioned with Ziggy's kernel. Which IS being worked on. (Really.)
Seriously guys I have received all your pm's and took down the main rom that broke GPL in chingy's rom. As far as the other rom in question it IS being worked on, I simply don't have the information to give at this time. I'm not the moderator handling it.

I'd like to thank both of you for your replies. I do believe what you say. I've seen how unpopular some of the actions moderators have taken regarding GPL have become, but I do believe the right actions have been taken.
Some of you may disagree with what I've said. That's fine, but don't voice it here in this thread. Talk to these guys directly via PM. The primary purpose of this OP is to share thoughts on the GPL and to foment debate and, hopefully, the changing of a few minds on the issue. Too many members of this community have failed to understand the GPL, how it shapes this community, and what our obligations are regarding it.
Moderators really shouldn't have to police this thing like they do. Many of us are here because we believe the "open source way" is the better way to develop software than any other method. That's why we believe Android is inherently better. It should logically follow that this community would support GPL and Apache compliant work and developemnt, and likewise, shun developers and software that's non-compliant. I'm here to change the minds of those who don't believe that should be the case. If that's you, this is the place for you to say your piece and debate.

If this doesn't belong here feel free to move it mods I am not sponsored to spread the word but rather I get an additional entry into the draw for the contest if I spread the word on some well-known community forum.
Here's the link to the contest: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/20876-htc-forum-giveaway-a-chance-to-win-1-of-4-htc-phones/
Good luck, hope you guys win somoething
Not too sure why you're linking it here when the contest has already finished

XDA closes tread of the first Sense 4+ Sensation. You are paid by HTC?

That is way some good devs left to other android forums. Like in any business growing big (from old times with 10 device forums, to the present, with "n"), the rules multiply, more & more restrictions, the anchor in real life is smaller with every day, and the thing that devs are humans with daily problems & mind lapsus for some links and minor stuff won't matter for some. Have a nice day.

And now watch XDA close this thread. Rules are rules my friend, even if it was a simple mistake by seb, rules still apply. If there was no rules and everyone did as the pleased then there would be no XDA. The mods aint trying to be horrible or mean but if they dont stick by they're own rules then what chance has this site got. Thats just my opinion.
i don't care if this thread will be closed. as user of this site = the person who make traffic, who read topics and forums, and finally, i can say i'm the final consumer of this site ( you could name me client), i'm pissed off because that thread is closed, so i cannot find answers to my problems with the software provided by that thread. in legal terms, my rights are restricted here! i'm not talking about the developer, i'm talking about me, final consumer of this site, i'm the person on behalf this site, and without me as consumer, this site would not exist! SO, THIS IS ABOUT MY RIGHTS HERE! I HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT ONE SOFTWARE, AND I CANNOT BECAUSE SOMEBODY RESTRICTED MY RIGHT TO ACCESS THAT. => XDA UNLOCK THE THREAD, BECAUSE YOU AFFECT THE PEOPLE WICH GIVE A REASON FOR YOU TO EXIST! Have a nice day.
Chill man, mods are just doing their job and there's been a q&a thread dedicated to Sebastian's ROM in the q&a section so you can ask anything you want there

i know its not the original thread, but if uv a question then u can ask there. im not missing the point, the simple fact is rules r rules and us as users have to stick to them, the rules r the same if ur just an average user of xda or dev and if u dont stick to them then this is what happens. ur making a big deal over nothing, the thread will be open soon so just relax. i wasnt actually calling u a boy, its just where im from they use the word boy alot, like "alright boy hows things"? personally i dont care if ur 10 or 50
also u could have a read at this coz im guessing u havnt
[MANDATORY] RULES FOR DEVELOPMENT
Seb left? I don't get what you guys are arguing over, and I don't actually know what happened. But I do feel what OP about treating developers, because at end of the day, we, users of this site are being affected. I am not saying don't have rules, I am saying judge on the situation. Someone trolling is not the same as a good dev making a mistake. Even a big mistake, he/she should be given a chance due to the commitment they have put into this site and joy brought to fans in the past. Rules are important, but when people forget what rules are intended for then why do we even have them in the first place? If more and more dev leaves this site, the rules will be useless because no one will be using it. Like I said, I am not defending Seb because I don't even know what he did, instead just making a point. We have yet another good dev left sensation...
Problem solved. This tread could be closed.
