HTC Kills Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich Update Plans? - HTC Inspire 4G

It’s been nearly two years since HTC first announced the Desire HD, making it a proper dinosaur in the smartphone world. Despite its age, the manufacturer had been planning to give the smartphone a fresh new start with an Ice Cream Sandwich update. At least, that was the plan, but now it seems that HTC may have reversed course, and the Desire HD won’t be seeing an official ICS release, after all.
Back in May, we saw a list of which HTC models were due their ICS updates, and when; the Desire HD fell in the July-August range. We’d assume that was still the case, were it not for Canadian carrier Telus updating its own list of future software releases, noting that the Desire HD’s Ice Cream Sandwich release is now canceled. According to the carrier, “HTC has [canceled] the HTC Desire HD ICS upgrade due to poor device performance during testing.”
That’s a little surprising, because even with just a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon, the phone’s 768MB of RAM sounds sufficient for ICS operation, even if it might be a little pokey in spots. Apparently HTC just felt that the performance issues were too great to ignore; maybe Sense simply got in the way too much.
We haven’t heard any update from HTC itself on the Desire HD’s prospects, but if this really is the case in Canada, we can’t imagine things will be different elsewhere.

It's against XDA rules to make duplicate posts in multiple forums.
Considering you posted the exact same in the Desire HD forum, I will take the liberty of closing this thread to avoid replication. Although the 2 devices are similar, they are branded under different carriers. Update policies will certainly be different, and as most long time users know, what a carrier/manufacturer says about updates, isn't necessarily the truth, and things change.
Most "OTA" update dates can be classified as nothing more than "rumors".
Please avoid posting duplicate posts in multiple forums, unless specifically approved by a moderator beforehand.

G2X Against The World: Crack Flashers Will Appreciate.

The Sensation is not what you want. This device may fall under the category with the Droid X and the Atrix. There is barely any support for either device. I suggest you ride it out with the G2X because support and roms will come in a bundle sooner or later. The sensation is tempting but once you do your initial setup than what?

But seriously, I'm a gadget whore. If it's shiny I'm one of the first to own it. I can't use cooked ROMs because everyone I've used (and I've used some of the greats) leave me f-d trying to register on foreign networks. I agree with you up to a point about dev support for the Sensation. Keep in mind it's HTC's flagship phone and will be highly sought after worldwide (as will the SGS2). Based on its popularity, I'm guessing it'll get some dev love.

This is the feature that kept me on the g2x.
Also the extra ram and processer power that the sensation has is for sense ui to run smooth.
Cant wait until new kernels arrive that will make the tegra a crazy powerhouse. The phone has been out for about two weeks, give it some time for the devs to get a hold of it. The nexus s for the first 2 months had a really lame dev section.

No because the only reason the THunderbolt was unlocked was because of a leaked old ROM that wasn't locked down. Total luck.
I just came from an atrix and there is one dev cooking roms. (He has two). While they were both awesome its not a whole lot...we have more development here in two weeks then they had in 3 months. The atrix has more ram which is its only advantage....I always had like 700 mb ram available.....so for me the extra ram didn't benefit me. I was tempted to get the nexus s due to it being pure google but the fact that its a samsung phone (had alot of problems with galaxy s) and with dual core phones coming out I figured I would skip it. The g2x is what the nexus s should have shipped with. Dual core tegra.

Motorola was a big name in Android because of the $100MM in marketing they and Verizon spent to put Android on the map with the "Droid does" campaign. Once HTC and Samsung got with the program Motorola's market share has been steadily declining. They're also primarily a North American player where Samsung and HTC are global. Both the SGS2 and Sensation will each individually sell more units than the entire Motorola Android product line. Spec wise the Atrix is a good comparison but sales and acceptance wise not so much. I at least give them credit for going back to the drawing board on the Bionic rather than launching what would have been an already dated phone.
Assuming all future Samsung and HTC phones are based off the internals of the SGS2 and Sensation, the impact of what you're saying is devs are going to stop working on Samsung and HTC phones. I find that hard to accept. Especially when the SGS2 and Sensation (and their derivatives) are expected to sell in the millions of units. Only time will tell.

HTC to release Ice White color HTC Sensation with Ice Cream Sandwich

According to a press release published by HTC Netherlands, company is going to release an updated ice white color version of HTC Sensation. Here updated means this mobile will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The device will be available on sale from March 1 in the country..........

Have you looked at the HTC Ville specs? It's essentially the same specs as the Sensation but slimmer. The Sensation is a great piece of hardware.

Probably earlier than that. Official Roms usually leak a couple weeks before they are released.
The same thing with the Amaze, it's the same thing with an extra 256MB of ram, and new housing and better camera.
I still love the Sensation, I can confidently say this is the best Android/HTC phone I've owned since the G1, and I've went through a bunch of Android phones since Android.
@Moshe, Oh Tegra phones are quick, no doubt about that. The G2x I got is amazing. GTA3 with full graphics plays much smoother on the G2x than it does on the Sensation. Just the fact the nvidia won't give the source code so dev's could develop ICS for it, kills the whole experience.

Yea, and battery just for 3h IMPRESSIVE!
Update: HTC just wrote us to say that its original press release was incorrect — it'll actually ship with Android 2.3 and be upgradeable to 4.0 down the road, just as its other Sensation versions will be. In other words, don't expect an ICS-equipped Sensation on March 1st... but you can expect a white one with Gingerbread. Furthermore, the white Sensation is already available in select markets, so the PR is simply announcing its upcoming availability in Benelux. Now, the question becomes: how much longer is the wait for the upgrade?

ICS Update ....Is this true

Just stumbled on to this blog post
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/0...cream-sandwich-update-roll-out-odds-are-slim/
that's claiming the ICS update is slim chance of coming to the thunderbolt what are the chances of this??? Anybody else read this post I have never come across this site before, maybe its just opinion but I will flip if this phone doesn't get ICS update I will be ready to leave android all together ill go back to a dumb phone and save some money..
If HTC doesn't update this they will be on my list of no buy companies up there with samsung (OG galaxy tab owner) who would rather sell a new product than update an existing product that's a good way to lose customers rather than save them. I hate apple products with a passion but at least they get a couple updates before they make you buy a new phone this fragmentation is getting ridiculous.
Android has a chance to be great better than any iproduct but they need to step it up and get in with these phone manufacturers and clean up the fragmentation. work together so when a new version is released all phone can get it. plan ahead and support a product stop taking after china building crap that needs to be bought new again instead of being fixed and upgraded.
/rant
let flaming begin I apologize if this is in the wrong forum or has a topic already
I agree, its ridiculous if our phones don't get this update. Its not so much that we don't get the update, but more that HTC has done nothing but break promises to Thunderbolt owners who already have been suffering through many issues. Hopefully they'll at least give us the RIL so the devs can finish they're roms because they're great so far. In the end though, I'm done with HTC once my contract is up... plan on getting the next Nexus where there will be no problems like this.

Anyways, I have seen where one guy (can't remember his name) called HTC about the update for the Thunderbolt.
This guy claims that an HTC representative told him over the phone that HTC has already released the update to Verizon. Now that the ICS update is in Verizon's hands, we are basically waiting for Verizon to add their crap to it before they release it to it for use.
I wish I could find this post where the guy was talking about it.
I am almost certain that Thunderbolt users WILL see ICS, but never anything more updated than that.

HTC sent me this email yesterday when I asked them about ICS on the Thunderbolt
Dear #### ,
Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC technical support. I will gladly assist you with your inquiry regarding the ICS update and your Thunderbolt, ####.
HTC does not announce dates for release of software due to the nature of the software development process. At any point in the software development cycle a situation may be encountered that requires anything from some minor additional rework, to complete rewrites of the software base. Only after the final acceptance testing has been successfully completed will HTC release software. The normal time period between the final acceptance testing and release of software is about a week and often shorter than that
With this being said, I would suggest that you keep an eye on our official website and social media outlets. Once we have released the software for your Thunderbolt, it will be announced on these sites first.
I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, ####. Keep in mind, you can find tips & tricks and your user manual on the Thunderbolt support page found here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-thunderbolt-verizon/

Doesn't confirm nor deny just keeps us wondering. more or less the reason i posted this in the first place was because my wife has the rezound which was suppose to be updated the end of June/early July and here we are at the end of July and still nothing for the rezound either. So i thing HTC is turning into another samsung with updates lets hype up the news and tell everybody that we will update only to say down the road that it cant be updated.
It cant be paranoia when a Rom can be created for my OG galaxy tab showing it can run ICS without problems but samsung says it cant be done it all comes done greed they need to make money which i understand but they shouldn't be doing it at the expense of there loyal customers who ran out and bought the first 4G device created for verizon and waited almost a year before getting 4g in there areas (some i'm sure are still waiting). It may be a good business Decision now but it wont be in the long run when those customers go else where.

This is exactly the reason HTC is now on my NO BUY list. I will stay away from HTC. I hate sense but liked HTCs build quality. But from here on out I will stay away from HTC phones. Considering the Desire HD's ICS update just got the axe and the phones are pretty similar..... I'm thinking the Ththunderbolt will probably get the same excuse. Glad I switched to a Galaxy S3.

Well, that's not entirely true.
The latest excuse/reason from HTC regarding pulling the Desire HD ICS update states that the reason is due to lack of internal storage capacity to handle the upgrade.
Due to the lack of capacity(1.5Gb's), the update would end up formatting all of the users data.
This is the reasoning for them not updating that device.
Our Thunderbolt however, has approx. 4GB of internal storage, so for us, this excuse will not fly and should not be used.
Also we should not see a lack of update due to "Poor device performance" either.
As they have obviously gotten ICS and Sense 4 running well enough on the 600Mhz Desire C device that they just released.
So, should we be faced with the same fate as the Desire HD?
NO we shouldn't!
Does this guarantee anything?
Absolutely nothing!
But I don't think we can write it off just yet anyway....
As I stated in another post...
I don't believe the HTC Desire HD is the closest phone to the Thunderbolt. Rather, I believe the AT&T HTC Inspire 4G is, which does currently run ICS.
I don't see why it would be a problem for us. Especially when you compare the phones together, the Thunderbolt comes out on top.

It's definitely not LTE ready nor has a modem chipset that supports LTE. My friend owns one.
The also both have the same amount of memory (768mb). However, if you meant flash memory, then yes, it has more (4GB versus 1.5GB)

Okay, you're right about the LTE on the Inspire. Thanks for clearing that up because I totally read up on that wrong.
Since the Desire HD has less flashable memory than the Thunderbolt, I think the Thunderbolt still holds that good chance of getting the ICS update.
Regardless, who knows what excuse they might come up with.
I know it won't be because it isn't capable of running on the Thunderbolt. Even the Inspire runs ICS. =l
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Just seems like because of flashable memory coming into play, the Inspire is technically closer to being a Thunderbolt than the Desire.
That's pretty much all I was saying.
Though barely a difference between the Inspire and Desire.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Pretty sure the Desire HD and Inspire 4G are the exact same phone, other than the Inspire 4G has a second noise cancelling microphone and has a couple more radio frequencies it can run on. Some people say the Inspire has 4GB ROM and the DesireHD only has 1GB, but from what I understand they both only have 1GB for the system, which is why neither is getting an official ICS update.
Yes, the Inspire has ICS, and so does the DHD, but only because of developers that take the time to make the ROMs, neither phone is getting ICS from HTC.
What does this mean for the Thunderbolt? Who knows...but I believe it only has 1.5GB for system, which might be barely enough to get an ICS update installed, or might just not be enough.
It would be if they dumped Sense (fat chance).

A lot of us have sim free devices, which means we don't have to rely on network providers, so in theory if HTC released the JB update for Europe, every sim free one s that was bought from Europe should have the JB update by the end of the week, likewise for USA etc. Network locked/branded phones have to wait.
Sim free device means it comes down to the CID number.
Although with the way things worked out for the last update, it sounds like you're better of with branded phones
Take 5-10 seconds to read this thread, I already posted that quote in this thread already......
Regarding as to if JB will make a difference or not, many people who have the GS 3 have said the difference in smoothness is pretty big coming from ICS and from my experience the GS 3 is smoother than the S, just not as nippy/speedy though.
Besides there is more to it than just project butter:
- notification tray UI update
- improvement in battery slightly
- improvements in sense such as themes for the SMS sense app, camera UI, battery history/graph
No doubt there will be other improvements, possibly improving signal/wifi performance even more.

Man...some of you don't seem to understand how the update process works. Weather HTC said this month or not it doesn't matter. You service provider has final say as to when you get your precious update.
As of yesterday give it take " update for the one x and one s will be November and December respectively"!
Take 2 seconds and google it.
4.0.4 with sense 4 is pretty slick so I'm not sure why everyone has their panties in a bunch

Mines sim free not branded and should get it straight away also once devs get their hands on the software they can implement it into their roms so technically we are just waiting for HTC and they don't stick to their deadlines

I'm just going to throw this in here also... Coming from a family who has ran a small business, deadlines are hard to keep. You may think with 100% certainty that something will be done by then, but something else pops up and you have to focus on that.
Even with HTC being a bigger company they have a TON of other things to worry about, not going out of business for one. There's no way HTC has as many developers on board as Samsung and Google at the moment, not to mention how much more work goes into Sense UI than Touchwiz.

Not only that, but do you remember a few years ago when phones didn't update firmware or software at all?! As someone already mentioned, the recent OTA update is great, and gets any job done for all intents and purposes. This is a case of wanting the shiny new thing right away - I say you're lucky you don't have to buy a new phone to get it at all, IMHO.
If you can give a solid example how JB will fix a major problem, or make your Android-Phone-using life drastically better, I'll reconsider. In the mean time I'm more than happy with what I have.

Couldn't agree more. I don't see how much better my phone can get, it does anything and everything I want it to. It lasts me more than all day, except if I play heavy games (Which is a given with any phone...)
If you want fast updates, and a lot of them go to a iphone.
Everyone is nagging on HTC, while not enjoying what they have.
Jellybean will not drop until after the one x+ drops. Count on it. That's how they get that small percentage of impatient people to upgrade.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but give HTC a break.
I mean, it is them but it is us too.
Several companies haven't even pushed ICS yet.
And are you kidding? Not many things changed, just an addition of Google Now and some other things. I would understand if they like promised like 5.0 Kandy Kane/Key Lime Pie/Krispy Kreme or whatever, but no.
The update is also confirmed to start rolling out in October-November.
HTC no longer announces dates for release of software due to the nature of the software development process. At any point in the software development cycle a situation may be encountered that requires anything from some minor additional rework, to complete rewrites of the software base. Only after the final acceptance testing has been successfully completed will HTC release software. The normal time period between the final acceptance testing and release of software is about a week and often shorter than that.
Also, look at other companies. Samsung, Huawei, Sony, Alcatel, etc. All companies are never sure when they are going to release it. I'm sure it's not easy to develop something for ever single device and customize everything to a liking. All phone companies lie.
Hope that helps!
I also think the main reason they could be late is because of rebasing it on 4.1.2 instead of 4.1.1, to avoid another update in the future.

Hi guys !
If you look at the link below, it says (in French sorry :/) that the htc one x & s (SFR branded) will be updated on the 6th November. It also mentions that they are now validating internally the update.

This.
I am sure JB has been ready for quite a while now, well most certainly for the one X anyway.
Only reason they don't release it for the X is due to the above, another selling point for the X+.
Exact same happened with the GS 3 and the GS 3 LTE model in the UK, only in the last few days have GS 3 UK owners been getting the JB update despite the LTE model being out for a month or a few weeks iirc. Only difference between them is one has an extra GB of RAM and is LTE supported.
I am in no rush at all really, however, I would like to get the update before the end of the year though especially since I can't see us getting 4.2.....
Here is just a glimpse preview of what JB and the new sense will bring, it is for the X though and some stuff isn't right i.e. we do have the notifications new features, which shows more detail.

Why don't u think we will be getting 4.2? Do u think one x will be getting 4

The one X will.
I just have a funny feeling the s won't, due to it not being popular at all, HTC have a whole bunch of new android phones out and will be releasing even more in the next 1-2 months meaning less time and money to spend on older devices. Plus we have only had like 2 updates since the phone released, where as the X has had around 4-5.
Of course, I could be completely wrong and really hope I am.
Although if the XL gets the update (and am pretty sure it will), then there is absolutely no reason why they can't provide the update to the S as well.....

Official HTC JB for One XL - not until mid-November

Hi all,
Can't find any news on the at&t HTC one x JB roll-out but found this:
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/1...ne-software-updates-telstra-optus-vodafone-8/
So this is our best hope to get the official JB from HTC and hopefully the devs will bake something good once this is out.
thats not to far off a week or so
hope we get a leak soon
I can't freaking wait! I'm anxious to see what kind of tricks these awesome devs can pull off!

Well, yes and no. Sure, it'll technically be 4.1, but 4.2 isn't a huge update - the 4.2 version of Google Now, for example, is also available in 4.1. Also, the Sense camera has some benefits (Burst Mode, Slow Motion Video) that still aren't available in the improved native 4.2 camera app.
The real feature I'll miss from 4.2 is lockscreen widgets, but it's not that big of a deal.

I agree.
As long as I'm on 4.1 I'm happy.

This mid-November date is pulled from Telstra Crowd Support info:
http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Device-Updates/Handset-updates-8-November/td-p/95790
The mid-november is HTC submission to Telstra which will likely need modifications etc. Telstra are expecting 2 builds required for this release prior to going public.
HTC submit test build 1
Telstra suggest improvements
HTC submit test build 2
Telstra accept or suggest improvements
HTC submit test build 3 if required
Telstra accept or suggest improvements
....
HTC/Telstra release.
A mid-November for the initial submission means the public release will likely be well in to December. And this has slipped by a month now, it is possible this wont go public till January. All this also depends on the builds actually coming by mid-November, as said this already slipped from the start of October.
I am not sure, but these delays are from HTC not Telstra, I doubt any carrier from any regions has received initial builds. All carriers waiting for JB are likely to see their builds rock up in a similar time period(ETA mid-November) and then the carriers own internal testing regime would determine which carriers release first.
Well too bad.
Aokp for now I guess

And this is why we are in a forum about rooting/modifying your device.
There will be a leak or an official build pushed to an international one xl and it will be ported to all the carriers so that we can all use it without waiting

How so it's very common for htc to not push an Os update when they have a new phone getting ready to drop

Samsung S3(non LTE) JB from Telstra will go public 22nd November. They are only a few weeks ahead so far and you really cant complain about a few weeks.
Comparable device release dates and flagship status etc and both are getting the JB update in a comparable time frame.
Jellybean + viperxl would be awesome

I'm sorry you feel that way but being two software releases behind 8 months after a "flagship" phone is released is unacceptable to me. You really think we'll get it before Christmas, with the One X+, DNA, and 8X coming out? Face it, they could care less how soon we get it. If at all.
Most of the blame goes to the carriers, but not even the international version has it officially yet, so HTC is also to blame.
Yeah I feel the same.
Its like HTC hired the guy/team from lg that was responsible for software updates, and he's on holidays.
I'm losing respect for HTC daily, S3 came out a good spell after the Onex and its moving ahead before the Onex, that is garbage.

And its hardware is still inferior to the hox. So, we still have the better device regardless of updates.
