Safe driving app (request) - General Topics

Hi.
So, i just watched a show called SourceFed on youtube where they talked about a guy getting arrested for "driving homicide",
basically he texted while driving, he ended up in the wrong lane and fronted another car killing the other driver.
Which brings me to my request:
Could you guys help me by developing a free application which disables the text (sms) function in a phone once the phone reaches a speed of 25km/h (15mph)?
That's "all" the app has to do, just disable the SMS function while driving.
One downside that i would like you to ponder about, is the fact that this would disable the text function for the passenger as well, how can this be worked around without the driver being able to do so as well?
Perhaps a WiFi module somewhere in the car which gives more accurate GPS positioning data which then leads to you being able to tell if the phone is in the driver seat or not?
I'm not doing this for commercial purposes or for profit, i just had a good intention which i would like to see available to everyone and perhaps even standard in the next generation of phones so we don't loose lives due to technical gadgets..

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but gps is not accurate enough to tell if you are in the passenger seat of a car.
The speed limit thing can be done though, and I think has, but it would be easier for drivers to simply use self control.
However you can try apps like call guard, that apparently blocks texts and calls while you are driving.

or the most dummy-proof way: don't text and drive!
unless you are using your device as an GPS, shouldnt be using a phone while driving anyway.
got a text? read it during red light/traffic jam
need to talk on phone? invest in headset
etc

I know that you shouldn't, and i don't unless i'm parked.
This is my issue: google: teen-sentenced-to-prison-for-texting-while-driving-death (a few days old)
Over here perhaps 10-15% of drivers admit that they do text while drying more then once a week,
and most of them claim that they don't notice any difference while driving, meaning that they think they operate just as good as they normally do.
The rest knows it's bad but do it anyway.
Thx mistermentality, will check out Call Guard

Surveillance with Windows Mobile

Is there a way to use a Windows Mobile device for surveillance?
I'm thinking along the lines that I install some software (tell me what to install!) on the device with motion detection. When it triggers the device takes a picture and sends it to a pre-defined number using MMS.
Is it possible?
sure if somebody wrote an application for it
and the pda was supplied power all the time
because it had to be on all the time for motion detection
Yeah, I've already thought of constantly supplying the power, that's not a problem.
The software is the problem. I can always write it myself, but I'm guessing that it would not be as good as an "official" solution...
If you happen to succeed and make a workable program, please let us have a look at it, I know I'd never use it, but it could be useful to someone else out there and you could even let us see the source, give a helping hand.
thanks, Forlornity
Wow this is a great idea. I will be following this forum and I also will try to do some other searching online. I will report back if I find anything!
Edit: Just thought of something. If you have slingbox pro it allows for multiple av inputs If the camera were connected via coax to your tv, you should be able to navigate to the secondary input on your tv using slingplayer mobile. Would this work? Anyone?
" If the camera were connected via coax to your tv,"
he wants to use the pda as the camera
tvout coax is not something many pda's have
there are tons of systems which let the pda using wifi
view a number of security cams but thats another story
Rudegar I think you misread my post, and maybe I misread the original post. Let me try to be more clear:
If you have slingbox, you can view whats on your tv from your phone/pda. Therefore, if you connect your surveillance camera to your slingbox/or tv, theoretically you could view this from your phone. Upon re-reading I think he may be suggesting using the phone/pda as the surveillance device. My apologies.
i have an app that u leave ur pda in a room with the prog activated ,if it hears any noise above your own preset levels it calls your other landline or mobile and plays the sounds to you ,all done on the pda in silence
great to bug a room its supposed to be a baby monitor but great for spying lol
wow thats awesome! whats the name of the program? where can we find it?

Hi,
get this one. It is working...

A mobile surveillance
Yes there is a way. A mobile surveillance app merely sits on the phone silently and reports to the web server when the phone makes or receives communications such as calls and text messages. The more advanced cell phone spy software that does things like let you listen to live calls and spy bug a room are a little more challenging to produce. The preferred method is the use of the software program specifically designed to conduct eavesdropping surveillance on the mobile phone. The ideal way to do this is with the use of what is called local cell phone spy software. This is accomplished within eavesdropping cell phone application that you download to the target phone.

Behaviour when you remove the N1 from the desktop dock

I read over the First Impressions thread on the dock, but still am left with this problem.
I put my N1 in the dock, and then yes the phone and dock pair over bluetooth automatically. I play my music and sweet its going over my stereo now. Apps like DockControl can prevent the phone from going straight to the Clock app (nice for those of us not using the stock Android music player).
The stupid behaviour happens when you remove the phone from the dock, cause then devices unpair, is there an app/way to prevent this?
You can explicitly re-tell the devices to pair. but who's going to do that everytime they plug in their phone??
Anybody else frustrated with this?

Yes, I hate it, too.
Last week I took a quick look at the source code and there seems to be a bug in the system. The way it should work is that it should only disable the bluetooth connection ONLY if it was disabled before docking the phone, to prevent the user from forgetting, and save battery life.
However, this is working intermittently and sometimes it disables bluetooth even if it was enabled before docking.
I just got my internet working again yesterday (Comcast effing issues...)
, but I'll try to figure this out and put out a hack somewhere
In my experience, you can just manually connect with the dock before setting it in the cradle. Then the bluetooth won't disable when you remove it from the dock.

Yes, it works. But as I said in my previous post, it works intermitently.

Yup, but it only works once. Each time you:
a) go out of range and drop the BT connection OR
b) shut off the phone OR
c) disable BT
You will have to manually reconnect after each time to maintain streaming audio
Sucky.

WTF?
The least you could do is remove that default advertisement for Apple.
Why on Earth people are prepared to provide free promotion to multi-billion dollar corporations is beyond me. Why you'd want to do it on this forum is beyond the gods I'd imagine.
Please do not take this acute criticism personally...

Dude, chill.. I just wrote that just to screw around. I don't understand why all the hate, and people getting offended for things like this. We here are mostly Android enthusiasts... but don't be closed minded, every OS platform has their pros and cons, and its up to the user to choose their preferred device/os.
And that signature is on people's emails because its hard coded and put there by default when you set up the email on iPhones. Most people don't even worry and don't care about that, or just don't know how to remove it... Others just prefer to have it to make sure, and imply to the email recipient that they are on their phone so that they can excuse typos and/or brevity, so users just leave it there.
Again, it's users preferences

I'm cool... tried to signal that in my self contradicting last line, fail, sorry.
It does bug me a little though, like those stupid "sent from my xda app blah, blah". IMHO 'sent from my mobile device' is sufficient enough, gratuitous promotion unnecessary.
But since you specifically asked for forgiveness I shall grant it. (<- chilled!)

All good man
+1 On finding a fix. I have 2 docks, and would like to be able to set one to connect and one to not connect, they're only two rooms away (one on desk hooked up to my PC AUX, one next to my bed with no audio out) so there's a little bit of a struggle between them sometimes. Anyway, if this could be fixed it could mean that i could keep the desktop one connected for media and possibly keep the other dock from picking it up. Maybe I should invest in a lead wall between the rooms

This is actually a different situation, and I don't think it could be fixed.
The reason being is that, currently, the android OS acts and changes settings depending on a docking state, and it's not dependent of a certain dock. And that is currently not possible because it acts like a 3-way switch (DeskDock/CarDock/UnDocked)... am I making sense?

You could use BlueDock (market) plus Tasker (http://tasker.dinglisch.net/) to disable bluetooth after connecting to the one without an audio out - i.e. have BlueDock start any otherwise unused apps depending on the bluetooth mac of the dock and then having Tasker disable bluetooth upon detecting the start of the app.

Skype now video calls to Android, Mac, Windows, iOS!!

Dear devs,
http://www.bgr.com/2011/07/01/skype-for-android-updated-with-video-calling-support-video/
After reading that article, I'd like to formally request someone to find a way to make this work on the Charge! Finally, we can Skype someone on a computer (PC/Mac) or on any Android or iPhone! Amazing. It's also about time.
And this edited Skype does not work on the Charge: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Skyp...alls-working-on-non-supported-devices_id20025
Apparently it works on the charge but you have to be on a gingerbread rom.
Interesting, would be nice to finally have a use for this front-facing camera(there are other apps but no one uses them, all the people I know use Skype).
Also, sorry for derailing but I'm going to assume you use Skype on your Charge, do you know how to stop it from auto-starting? I usually just open it, check who's online, send my messages, etc and task kill it but sometimes I'll hear the sound of it starting up (whether I'm using the phone or not). It just keeps my phone awake and kills battery, do you know how to stop this..?

Well on Windows it has the option of choosing not to startup with windows. I haven't checked it on Android.
Heh thanks anyway. So I'm assuming Skype hasn't let out any official word on the Charge(or any other phone) video call release date, I didn't hear anything about this initial update at all so I'm guessing it's just going to be surprises from here on out.

You have to go to the My Info tab and then press the menu button to access settings. In there, you can find a box to uncheck for starting automatically.

2015 Honda CR-V EX-L and bluetooth

I have posted a similar post in the CRV Owners forum, but I thought this forum would make more sense since it's filled with a bunch of hardware-hacking programmers!
The interface between my car and my phone (LG G2 Lollipop stock) is abysmal. I have seen a number of posts on the web about this issue with modern cars, but no real solutions. The following is a list of what I would like the interface to be between the phone and car. Then at the end of the email I'll flame a little about the "why"s.
GIve me a button to allow me to talk to my phone directly without the HondaLink getting in the way. There was a similar issue with a Volkswagon and a solution using Tasker to intercept the call. That solution doesn't work with my Honda and is a kludge.
Always have the phone interrupt the radio (whether it's a call or audio, e.g. Google maps navigation). For me, the information coming from the phone will always be more important than the music or talk show on the radio.
Mirror the phone screen onto the car screen when I'm driving (so I can see my map when I need to)
When I receive a call, let the phone do the talking (the phone can speak the caller's name to me and can send the caller's name over the bluetooth connection) and let me hit a button to answer it.
Has anyone successfully hacked into the firmware/software in the CV-R to fix these issues? Is it possible? At this point, based on my research, I see no other option. If there is another option that doesn't involve replacing the system or "just dealing with it," I'd love to hear it.
The "why"s:
My phone is custimizable, has all of my contacts, recognizes my voice, has GPS, accurate and up-to-date maps, and does everything that I need a phone and navigation system to do. The Honda solution tries to duplicate all of that functionality and does it very poorly. As one user wrote last year, my $50 bluetooth headset can listen to my phone and pipe in navigation directions and let me know when I get a call. It is a joke that an expensive car can't even get that part right. The fact that I can't put my phone screen on the car screen while I'm driving is idiotic. Now I've got to find some way to hold my phone up for navigation. I don't want this post to degenerate into a series of posts and counter-posts on whether drivers can handle the increased cognitive demand. I've been driving long enough to see that the majority of drivers are not paying any attention at all to the road anyway and no one seems to care.
The hardware in the CR-V seems to be capable of doing the things that I have listed above. So, if the Honda programmers can't get it the way I want it, the only solution is to take the programming away from them and do it ourselves. Has anyone done this yet?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Is call recording yet possible?

Hi. Is it possible to record calls on Android os 13?
I heard since some Android 9 there is no possibility by many developers because they require a level of root to grant apps access.
Does it depend on root access and which os might have call recording function or might be working with call recorders?
Yes, call recording is possible on Android 13, but if it's not already enabled on your software, it will likely require root to enable.
Keep in mind that call recording may be illegal or restricted in some areas, and it is your own responsibility to be aware of the laws regarding recoding your calls.

In addition to what was @V0latyle said above, yes to this part. Even with the same phone it might be available in one country but not another (native). Other require root and some just aren't compatible. If you post more details maybe someone else can give you more detailed info for your situation.

I wanna buy a new phone and look which device might fit call recording best.
How do the manufacturers build phones detecting the permission or forbidance of recording? Is there a list of devices working? How come that some devices are not compatible for call recording at all?
I can only speak from what I've read and experienced. Samsung for example has it in a few markets only. Some call recorders I used in the past in the playstore listed certain phones weren't compatible, maybe technical limitations.
3rd party used to work with Samsung/for me but don't anymore. Unless it's allowed in your country (and comes with the phone) it could stop working at any time. Since I am in the USA, our laws are different in each state so none of our phones have it by default so I wouldn't be able to recommend anything.
There are subscription apps that route your calls through their servers and record on their end but don't recommend that.

Which Samsung was the last working with recorders? Seems like devices might scan the gsm?
Why don't you recommend these call routings? Due to data privacy, quality of voice or cost or other interference?
Ever since android 11 or 12 is stopped working for me. Haven't tried anything new since
And yes, privacy reasons. Also a bad experience, they all inevitably (except business grade solutions) tank. They are there one day and gone the next. I loved the one I was using, month after I bought a year subscription they were closing.
At this point I only make and acccept calls that I know won't need recording. If they do, I carry a second phone (impractical) or wait till I get home and use my tablets voice recorder app

How much did a subscription for one year cost you?
Do you use a speakerphone or make a hands-free mobile phone call while holding the microphone of your second mobile phone towards it?
It wasn't cheap, $52.99, did other things like let you listen into the call and have their "bot say what you typed" , etc.. but again that's gone. There might be similar services but it's not worth it.
And for the second device method, you can do wired (a lot of splitters/y-cables) or just speaker on the phone making the call.
All this is last resort stuff though. If you're in a country that allows it, just Google whatever model you're interested in "can phone-XYZ record calls in Country-ABC?"

Can you recommend a y-cable or splitter or name a technology that works well? And then just pluging in the 3.5mm jack or usb and how to record on the second device?
It's janky and It's really not practical though, just warning you in advance. It's also like $50 of cable spaghetti.
Basically you get a usb-c to 3.5 headset adapter for each phone. You get a headset splitter, headset goes into another splitter. Audio goes into one port, on the other headphone splitter plug you route a cable to the microphone splitter input of the second phone.
Maybe something pre-made exists but don't know what it's called. You should be able to find a diagram on Google of what I'm describing above.
