The official ICS release is out: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00047555&fm_seq=51638
My phone is currently rooted. If I update to ICS, will this remove root access?
If u want stock official ics then you will need to update through kies and the update won't take place if you are not 100% stock....so yeah you will lose root in the process...unless you flash a rooted version of stock ics.

PS: If I was able to help you then hit thanks
Wait so I can't even update when I have root?
If I official update, can I root it again easy enough?
Do I lose any data by doing the official update (and losing root)?
As far as I know you must be 100% stock otherwise the phone will not update. If I am incorrect then someone speak up please.
As for rooting after, this shouldn't be an issue
Edit: you shouldn't lose data during the update but I believe you will lose data when flashing stock so essentially you will lose data

This is confusing to me as he must have cwm to be rooted. Are u able to flash back the stock recovery back without doing a full Odin to stock?
I think he has to Odin back to 2.3.5 and then take the 2.3.6 ota if he wants to update to ics through kies.

Technically you don't have to have a custom recovery to be rooted. If he's on gb he could have just rooted with super oneclick and left his stock recovery alone
When an ota update was pushed you could take the update if you were rooted but you had to still have stock recovery, and it would break root in the process. If you had a custom recovery then the update wouldn't take. You had to either push stock recovery with Odin or flash a custom firmware of the new base.

Ok, here's what I did to update to ICS 4.0.4 UCLF6 and I didn't lose any data and I was rooted, etc.
Download the file from sammobile here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=SGH-I727&r=-1#modelsa (the version shows 4.0.3, but that's a mistake, when it installs it shows 4.0.4 UCLF6). You'll need odin to install it. Once you install it via odin, it'll reboot and do it's initialization, etc. You'll revert to stock recovery and lose root. Once your phone boots and finishes loading, etc. Go back into download mode and flash CWRM via odin to get a new recovery. Once you have new recovery, you can then flash via recovery the root package which you can download directly from the source here: http://androidsu.com/superuser/
You'll want to download the latest 3.1.3 arm (not just the binary, the Superuser.apk and su). This should do the trick!

Yes, but download the file named Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip and flash it via CWM. This will appropriately push Superuser.apk to /system/app and push su to /system/bin
This worked like a charm....
Any chance for instructions on Odin? I've never used it before. I see a lot of guides out there, but they're all different and I don't know the specific way to do this.

That is a beginning step in rooting your phone. It is referring to Clockwork Mod Recovery which must be flashed in Odin. If u don't plan on rooting then disregard that stuff. You are good to go!

Ok so i really want the new baseband on my g2x, i was waiting to see if a flashable would come out but so far nothing
i would like to know if these are the steps to get the baseband and root
1.Go back to stock
2.Get stock recovery
3.Download LG update tool (which i think is found here , http://www.lg.com/uk/support/mc-support/mobile-phone-support.jsp)
4.Let it do its thing
5.When its done flash cwm
6.Flash a rom with root
And done? and i would like to know if that baseband can be used on 2.2.2
Watch and follow this video to get you back to stock.
http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/23/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2x/
Then run the update.
Then NVFlash
Then rooted rom by Xboarder.
Then do whatever you want.

Side note: i f#@ing hate the lg updater tool;( 45min of upluging and repluging my phone to get it to take the update. Horrible, i rather use odin.

After returning to stock, you run the LG update then you will have the new baseband. Then NVFlash. Then load the rooted rom.
Then you have new baseband and a rooted rom.

Can someone give me instructions on how to get back to stock, gain root, and install custom ROMS/ MIUI

1. for restoring stock : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989

3. Install clockwork recovery and rom manager
4. Install custom roms.

Pretty sure it came with 2.2 but not sure.
Then I wouldn't do that 2.1 Odin one click.... Look for a stock 2.2 Odin or Heimdall, make sure to read thoroughly too.

Note: as b-eock pointed out, make sure what was your stock version before restoring it!
I've always just flashed newer than my stock to avoid that problem and it always works well for me, after bricking or when i want to flash a new rom i flash to cappy gingerbread and flash boog kernal to get CWM(clockworkmod). CWM is essential is you plan on flashing to other roms. If you plan on flashing to another rom anyways it doesn't matter which version of stock you load as long as it work so I'd just flash 2.2 or newer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
- this has all the odin 1-click flashable packages for captivate
To do everything you want to do...
flash back to stock, use 2.2 or one of the 2.3 versions. If you plan on flashing to a gingerbread rom (2.3) you'll most likely need the gingerbread bootloaders, if you don't originally flash a odin package with the gingerbread bootloaders you might be asked to install them later depending on what rom you use
incase you don't know odin is the computer program used to flash one click packages, you can find it by searching XDA, one click packages won't require it.
odin has to be open before you plug the usb into the phone putting it into download mode.
to flash to other roms you need CWM (ClockWorkMod-a customized recovery mode for the phone) the thread in this post has links to odin flashable kernals with CWM for each software build. To get CWM flash the respective kernal for the version you use. You'll need odin to flash the new kernal, its essentially stock apart from CWM. In odin select PDA and browse to the kernal zip to flash it.
you can search around XDA for oneclickroots, they will typically be odin or CWM flashable it's quite straight forward. New roms will typically already be rooted so you shouldn't have to root again.
good luck!
Does anyone know which exact ODIN i need to flash to get back to 2.2 from download mode.
You can use adamoutler's uckb2 heimdall one click. That's stock 2.2.
But whitch ODIN do i use.
Gez, HTC is so much easier then this samsung!

Unfortunately, there is currently no Odin one-click of stock Froyo (at least that I'm aware of). If you want stock Froyo, you'll need to either piece it together with full Odin, or use the Heimdall One-Click.

Take a look in this post. That should get you the right 3E recovery.
Once you have that, you can either use ROM Manager to install CWM recovery, or see if you can find a kernel with it already baked in and use ODIN to flash the kernel (look for the speedmod kernel).
Or you could flash stock GB, but that updates bootloaders and is a whole different can of worms.

Normally, the answer would be yes. However, as part of the Froyo update, AT&T managed to mess up the recovery menu, meaning that it won't flash unsigned packages. This makes getting CWM basically impossible without doing the steps in that post or flashing a different kernel.
You can root if you want to, but doing the steps in that post first will save you some headache.

I already rooted =/ , should i still try this?
If you have full ODIN, go here, and download the kernel labeled "speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz.tar" at the end of the first post. Open Odin, and in the "PDA" slot, navigate to the .tar file and flash it. That will get you the speedmod kernel, which has CWM, which you need to be able to flash.
Once it's flashed, just hold V+/V-/Power until it reboots, and then you'll be in CWM and can flash MIUI.
I'm assuming you've backed up all your apps with Titanium Backup, right? If you haven't, do that before you do anything else so you don't lose them.

Im not sure if i have "FULL" ODIN. I have the ODIN i just used to install 2.2. Then i rooted it using SUPER1CLICK.
Where do i get the full odin
I used the 1-click method to root my phone. When I do the software update it goes as far as downloading the update, then my phone reboots. And for some reason when it reboots it reboots into recovery. Then I reboot my phone and when it loads it says update failed. The update is 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 I'm assuming. The reason I make this assumption is just because my wife and I got the same phone on the same day and hers updated and mine didn't. I rooted, she didn't. I read something about having to have all your original apps installed when I did a search, but I have removed any of the bloatware or any other apps as of yet. Thanks for the help in advance!
To Take the OTA you need Stock recovery, not CWM there is a thread with the Stock recovery you can flash in Odin to get the OTA to install

this should be what you need to take the 2.3.6 OTA (which really isn't all that worth it, so if you're happy with 2.3.5 i would stay there until an ICS OTA comes)

do i have to do this step or can i go forward with the current Stock_Root-Mod3e-UCKD5_Odin that i now have installed....?
secondly, after i install ics, right before i flash jb it states i have to do an aroma prep....then flash jb.....
all flashes are done with clockworkmod and i wipe only cache and dalvik? or is there anything else i have to wipe?

Follow all steps, don't skip a thing. As for wiping, wipe Cache, Data, Dalvik, and format /System when going from GB to ICS and ICS to JB. That UCLB3 file is Gingerbread stock and you have to go to gingerbread before you go to ICS.
Also, if you are confident that your phone won't get disconnected from Odin while flashing the UCLB3 file, flash the GB bootloaders while you're at it. If the flash fails while flashing bootloaders then your device is bricked so be sure about Odin before you flash them.

Since you have already used Odin, I would use option "C". The best thing you can do is read everything two or three times. There are also many vids on YouTube that are helpful.
Once you are on GB.....just pick out any ICS ROM an flash it. Once it installs, I wouldn't even bother sitting it up and then you can go to JB.
Th3Bill uses an Aroma installer in his ROMs and the first time you use it, you will have to flash his aroma-prep first.
Hang in there....go slowly...and read. This gets easier and easier the more you do it. I always just d/l the zips to my phone and never even have to mess with the PC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Edit: All of his ROMs for the Infuse can be found and d/l at Jokersax.com
Edit: I just reread your post......once you are on GB, you won't use Odin again. You will use whatever ICS zip to flash your ROM using CWM. Same thing with JB.

okay i think i understand....never has my phone disconnected during a flash with odin, ive always gotten a straight pass...exactly how important are the bootloaders anyways? if failures happen b/c of faulty usb cords, then im good...if bricking happens b/c of "unlucky chance" then id rather avoid it.... either way ill start the whole process tonight after i put the kiddos away so i can concentrate 100%.
thanks again for the tips

wish me luck!
Bootloaders prevent Rainbow fault I guess you could call it in ICS. You don't have to flash them but its recommended. If you have any problems, post and you'll get help pretty quick.

so far so good, it seems i need to do the gb bootloader after all...got the rainbow screen....i have my gbbootloader file ready to go....only thing is i want to confirm where i put the file, i've searched and i can only find a procedure for heimdall not odin...do i put the md5 file in PDA or bootloaders?? also it says in heimdall to tick bootloaders, do i do the same in odin??? it also says to flash twice....?? ok im really not risking a hard brick, i'll be patient and wait
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878458
i'll wait for your answer before i proceed....after this i'll continue to flash ics and then jb...
btw, am i supposed to flash ics twice?? that's what the [GUIDE] How To Flash JB says,
"9. Flash ICS Rom, then ICS Gapps"
but when i tried to flash ics a second time i couldn't (because of rainbow screen, and because it didn't show up in my directory....and where does ICS Gapps show up?
thanks again
If you downloaded the bootloaders linked in the guide, then yes, they go on the pda slot. You only have to flash once.
Heimdall-one click is the one you must flash once before it allows you to flash the bootloaders too.
Edit: to fully install ics you must flash twice, because I believe that what it does when coming from GB is that it just flashes the ics kernel on the first flash, requiring you to run it a second time after rebooting for it to install the complete rom.
Ics gapps are often linked in the rom OPs, although you don't need to flash them if you are headed to JB.

That's odd, I flashed GB bootloaders in Odin from a rooted stock GB. But andros is right about going in the PDA slot. Maybe its just me that didn't have to flash with heimdall first.

Shawn what I meant is that heimdall one-click wont allow you to flash bootloaders the 1st time, so you must run it once and then a 2nd time but with "flash bootloaders" ticked on.
There's no need to use heimdall before flashing them with Odin.

Oh, I see what you mean. My mistake.

Alright guys, I'm officially a jelly beaner!! Thanks again to all who replied and helped me out, couldn't have done it without your help everything seems to we working fine (with the exception of a few apps that aren't compatible, but they weren't that important ) only issue I have now is that I can't use my data plan and surf the web I configured everything just as I had it before according to my carrier and nothing ...... could it have something to do with the change in modem? When I scan for available network operators I get two options one says :NICMS and the other is just a number 71021... any ideas?
Also, when installing jb in the initial setup it asked which would be the defualt location to save I think I chose the sdcard instead of the emmc directory. ..can I change that setting?
I'm pretty sure you can change the setting, but not sure how. Also, your APNs might be messed up. There's a thread with working APNs. One sec and I'll link it.

Not necessarily, you could get 2.3.6 with Kies mini when ATT released it.
Look in this thread for guides to root. Read, read and read some more and make sure you have Heimdall or Odin on your PC. Follow guide to install correct drivers too.

Still Confusing. My infuse already has Gingerbread with UCLB3 installed( I bought this way). I just want to root and CWM installed. Any guides out there how to do it.
rooting and CWM on stock 2.3.6
Still confusing. This phone has stock version of Gingerbread 2.3.6 with UCLB3 firmware. I bought this way. I just want to root and Install CWM. ANy guides out there? This is not froyo and all the help out there shows how to go back to GB or upgrade to 2.3.6/ uclb3 ... like that. I already have UCLB3 firmware and why I need to install it again?
Probably because the links we provided had a rooted version of 2.3.6.

See post #2 or #3 in the first link qkster provided - these are Heimdall packages that will load a custom kernel/recovery with CWM. These will not reinstall the entire rom. Follow the instructions in post #1 if you are unfamiliar with Heimdall.
Or, if you are more comfortable using Odin see this thread and flash any of the three options in the OP that say "red CWM":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698367
**Before you flash the new kernel/recovery, visit the page shown below, download the first package under ARM devices, then copy the zip to your internal SD Card (if you are uncertain copy it to both).**
Home page for SuperUser - http://androidsu.com/superuser/
Direct link to SuperUser installer - http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
Once you have installed the custom kernel/recovery, let the phone sit for about 5-10 minutes - you will hear a voice coming from the phone - this is red CWM non-destructively reformatting your system, data, and dbdata filesystems from stock RFS to ext4 upon first reboot. It is important to let this process complete without interruptions. Once the phone boots, shut the phone down and boot into recovery then flash the SuperUser package... when completed reboot into phone OS and you are rooted.
