No OTA after Root? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I used the 1-click method to root my phone. When I do the software update it goes as far as downloading the update, then my phone reboots. And for some reason when it reboots it reboots into recovery. Then I reboot my phone and when it loads it says update failed. The update is 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 I'm assuming. The reason I make this assumption is just because my wife and I got the same phone on the same day and hers updated and mine didn't. I rooted, she didn't. I read something about having to have all your original apps installed when I did a search, but I have removed any of the bloatware or any other apps as of yet. Thanks for the help in advance!

To Take the OTA you need Stock recovery, not CWM there is a thread with the Stock recovery you can flash in Odin to get the OTA to install
Check out this link to another post on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360943&highlight=stock+recovery+odin
this should be what you need to take the 2.3.6 OTA (which really isn't all that worth it, so if you're happy with 2.3.5 i would stay there until an ICS OTA comes)

Would a factory reset go back to stock recovery?

No a Factory reset just resets the user data not the recovery or system information

My understanding was that 2.3.6 implemented a new modem that improved the performance of the phone. I personally have great service compared to my Tmobile that I just bought out my contact on. Just wondering how much better that update would make my phone.

If your rooted you can just flash the 2.3.6 radio in cwm... Or even a 2.3.6 ROM (MHX superlite 3.1 final was my GB ROM of choice)
There is a radio thread and also info in the all in one sticky thread.

Need a little help

Ok so i really want the new baseband on my g2x, i was waiting to see if a flashable would come out but so far nothing
i would like to know if these are the steps to get the baseband and root
1.Go back to stock
2.Get stock recovery
3.Download LG update tool (which i think is found here , http://www.lg.com/uk/support/mc-support/mobile-phone-support.jsp)
4.Let it do its thing
5.When its done flash cwm
6.Flash a rom with root
And done? and i would like to know if that baseband can be used on 2.2.2
Watch and follow this video to get you back to stock.
http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/23/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2x/
Then run the update.
Then NVFlash
Then rooted rom by Xboarder.
Then do whatever you want.
do i have to re root after i flash the rom

Go to the dev section and downloaded xboarders rooted rom that includes the update and root. It is a zip that can be installed the normal way after you NVFlash.

But you don't get new baseband with it, do you?
Also does the mew baseband work with 2.2?

I nandroided to stock, unrooted, flashed stock recovery, updated to 2.3.3, using the horrible lg update tool. Then nandroided back to my to cm7 w/ Jul 15th baseband. All is well. Gps is fast as hell, locked in 10 seconds indoors to 4 meters.
Side note: i f#@ing hate the lg updater tool;( 45min of upluging and repluging my phone to get it to take the update. Horrible, i rather use odin.

After returning to stock, you run the LG update then you will have the new baseband. Then NVFlash. Then load the rooted rom.
Then you have new baseband and a rooted rom.

[Q] Factory Data Reset and new question about recovery.

My SkyRocket is rooted and I have CWM installed. If I do a factory Data Reset from the "Privacy" menu within the phone will it set the phone back to its (out of the box) condition and will it take CWM off of the phone? The reason I am asking is because I have read several posts that claim you can not take an OTA update with CWM installed. I would like to have the option to remove CWM from the phone if it will not take the ICS OTA if / when it is finally released. If the factory data reset doesn't remove CWM from the phone, what is the best method of doing so (if it is needed for the OTA). Thank you.
Edit:
OK, I found a post in the "DEV" section with the original I727 factory ROM, which can be flashed via ODIN that should return the phone to its original "out of the box", unrooted, and CWM removed condition incase it is needed for the upcoming ICS update.
My question is: Is it possible to "just" reflash the "original factory recovery" part of the original ROM that came with the phone instead of reflashing the entire ROM, in effect, replacing CWM with the original recovery without disturbing the rest of the phone? This would basically be the reverse of how I installed CWM in the first place. Is this possible? Do the files (just the recovery part) for the 2.3.6 version of the original I727 (Skyrocket) exist in a flashable form file (TAR)? I don't care about the flash counter increasing because this isn't about returning the phone, it is about what might be needed to be done in preperation for an ICS OTA update. I figure these types of questions will only become more frequent the further into the first Quater of 2012 we get, so it will be an advantage to everyone to try and figure a few things out ahead of time. Thanks for any help in this matter.

no.
factory reset will not touch your recovery, your kernel or your /system
it wipes /data which stores your settings/configuration/user-installed apps
it also wipes /cache
it does NOT touch the actual system ROM, so your root will remain intact, and your CWM will still be there.
Bump...because I added new question(s) to the OP. Thanks.

While I'm not 100% sure, odin will flash back to a stock rom. However the tar that is around is a rogers rom. Ota updates should work.

This is the thread that has the I727 and the Rogers TARs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
These are supposed to bring the phones back to the "Out of the Box" condition if flashed through ODIN (if I read it correctly).
What I am looking for is a way (method) to just flash the recovery part of this back to the phone, basically replacing CWM with the phones original Recovery. A reversal of flashing CWM to replace the stock revovery in the first place.
I like CWM and plan to install it back to the phone after the ICS update, but from what I understand (and I know it isn't final until the ICS update is released and someone with CWM tries it), phones with CWM will not take OTA updates.
I am looking for a way to just reflash the "recovery" part so the rest of the phone will remain the same (keep root, data, and applications). A full stock TAR would erase all of that. I know programs like Titanium backup will back these things up and then replace them, but just replacing the "stock revovery" by itself would eliminate the need to do so and should be quicker and easier.
I am on 2.3.6 so it would need to be a working TAR that has the 2.3.6 stock recovery (only) for the AT&T SkyRocket. If it doesn't already exist, I would certainly be willing to "Donate" to a DEV that could create such a working TAR. I bet a 2.3.5 and Rogers version would be popular as well.
If this has been done or can be done please let me know. Thank you.
Read this thread... it has a link to the stock UCKJ2 recovery tar. Not sure if there is any difference between 2.3.5 recovery and 2.3.6 recovery, however. Hope this helps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360943
just download the ics rom and load it up when it comes out. it'll be the same rom but you'll still be rooted.
The stock recovery.tar here works on 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 in order to take an ota update you need to flash the stock recovery.tar with odin, and have all bloatware intact. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360943

Thanks to both of you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I may just wait for the ICS ROM to surface and flash it, but if I want to take the OTA ICS update, this will be very helpful. As promised, I will go and "Donate" to the person that provided this TAR. Again. thanks.

[Q] Noob question (root update)

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I rooted my skyrocket with superoneclick, but never flashed any custom roms. will I be able to update my phone when the ICS update comes or do I have to unroot first?
Thanks-

Always best to be stock. Course you can always wait for a flashable ROM which likely only take a matter of hours after any OTA is pushed
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Being rooted has never impacted the ability to successfully take an ATT OTA update. I was rooted on 2.3.5 and took the KK1 OTA update... and retained root after. However, you must have stock rom, stock kernel, stock modem, and stock 3e recovery in place to get update. Who knows if same will apply if/when ICS OTA gets rolled out however.

Problem with OTA 2.3.6

I've been having trouble updating to the 2.3.6 OTA. I've formatted the phone, gone completely back to stock, formatted phone again, cleared all caches, and anything else I can think of. When I download the OTA and hit ok to restart, it takes me to the white screen that says updating, but it only gets to 25% of "preparing for upgrade" and then it says "update is failed".
I've also tried the 2.3.6 file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1548750 but that always causes odin to crash.
Anyone else having this problem or anyone have any ideas on what I need to do?
You need to be completely stock: stock kernel, stock recovery, stock system with bloat, stock modems -- in order for the OTA update to take.
Download the stock UCKJ2 firmware from sammobile (I727UCKJ2_I727ATTKJ2_ATT.zip), unzip it, and flash the HOME_SGH-I727user_CL626051_REV02.tar.md5 in ODIN, then check again for update
But really, why bother? The update is just UCLA3 revisited, for the 3rd time... -- we have ICS goodness now.
Don't bother to update!!ยก!!

Thanks. That worked. The stock .tar file I was using was the k0nane one. I guess that's why it wasn't working. As for upgrading to ICS, I'll just wait till AT&T roll's it out or until the AOSP Rom is ready. The ICS leak feels the same way as the GB one with a few changes and a few bugs. I'd rather just stick with the stock and wait till an official ICS rolls out to our phones. That's just my preference.

Thank you. I was having same issue. THis worked perfectly!
I have been having the same issues with intermittent freezes and my phone soft crashes when deleting text messages. Just buggy in general. I tried all the suggested clean up resets and wiping the cache. Flashed it 2 separate times with to completely separate downloaded ROMs from the leak sites.
OTA does fail at 25% for me when preparing to flash when it tries to go to 2.3.6 from 2.3.5
Thanks for the post. Downloading the stock 2.3.5 now and will post an update afterwards.

Jelly Bean OTA

FOTA ripped for your enjoyment.

That's completely unmodified. (I tried just installing it in CWM. Think I probably bricked doing something silly...)
I pulled this as well, but I'm curious if you had to flash back to stock firmware and recovery to get it. I tried using a rooted stock rom and the software update screen would give me a "modified devices don't get updates" message. I actually had to have stock recovery and system installed so that it would download. Did you have to do the same thing?

I have a modified boot.img- perhaps that blocks the ota?
My device is rooted.
It is on 4.2.1 genuine T-mobile software.

What can I do to update OTA?
I played around with this a while ago (my flash counter is at 29 last time I checked).
I think you have a few options:
1) maybe unroot and that might remove the modified status
2) use heimdall or odin to flash back to unrooted stock, including stock recovery and boot.img
3) flash one of the rooted JB roms, either stock, cyanogen, or our very own Teamapexq rom
4) download the OTA or the JB rom from the web and repackage it yourself to a flashable zip.
Option 1 might not work. Option 2-4 will work, 4 would be the most fun.

OMG, I would like to do it with no hassle.
I just want something to work ... grrr.
Option 2 would probably be the most straightforward. Essentially, you are unrooting. I just remembered, Samsung has Kies which might restore it to stock. You can download it from their website.

the update in this thread is only about JB 4.1.2 that is officially the latest and the last one for our mobile. your message box is normal, there is no need for the usage of the OTA anymore since then. if u want to update to JB 4.3 follow this unofficial image:

Oh boy. Here we go. Having troubles here.
I am trying to re-flash my phone to stock so I can return it under the protection plan. I firmly believe my radio might be on the fritz.
Anyway, I used the directions here:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/04/25/how-to-unroot-the-samsung-galaxy-s-relay-4g-sgh-t699/
Now it all completed successfully, and the phone is chilling at the SAMSUNG screen trying to boot. Not sure what to do at this point. Its been sitting there for a good 5 minutes.
Please help!!
UPDATE: Went into stock recovery, cleared Cache and Data, then rebooted it again, and it booted!
Which JelyBean Version...!!!
