hi
After my success in installing a custom kernel (sebastian's kernel) on my s-on hboot 1.29.00000 device, i wanted to try other kernels so i tried both bricked and faux but both were installed successfully through 4ext CWM but when i reboot i still had my old kernel with broken wifi but when i reflash my old kernel the wifi is fixed so what to do?
use 4EXT recovery
go there ...in tools enable smartflash ..then immediately flash the kernel ...the kernel should change then
thanks!
ganeshp you are simply awesome... thank you:

Guys, I rooted and unlocked bootloader via HTCDev on my friends HTC sensation... and installed ViperS 1.1.0 with S-ON..
I needed to flash boot.img taken from viperS.zip via fastboot so it would boot correctly.
The problem my friend is experiencing now is Wifi keeps connecting... so this means there is a problem with wifi.
On searching XDA forum replacing the kernel would probably fix the issue like using Bricked Kernel.... but isn't ViperS already using Bricked kernel?
What's a good fix for the wifi? so I can apply it to my friends HTC Sensation ViperS 1.1.0....

With S-ON T-Macgnolia have explained that
When you use HTC Dev to unlock your bootloader it does unlock the Recovery, System, and Boot partitions to allow your device to write to those partitions and not just read those partitions. But there is a catch, if you want to flash a custom recovery you have to use ABD fastoot commands to flash it. When you flash as ROM in a .zip file via Recovery, it only flashes the System partition. You then have to open the .zip file and extract the boot.img and then use ADB fastboot commands to flash the boot.img to your boot partition. If you do not you will still have the boot.img of the ROM you was using before you flashed the New ROM.
Now let me explain the boot.img a little so you know why it is so important. The boot.img does just what thee name implies, it is what boots the Android ROM on your device. Now let me explain this a little further, the Android OS runs on top of something called a Linux kernel. This means that your bootloader boots the Linux kernel and the hardware of the device. The Linux kernel then boots the Android OS. The kernel is also the connection between the hardware and the Android OS. So you see if the kernel is not compatible with the system that is on the system partition you will have troubles like Wifi not working or other I hardware reliant functions. So when you flash a new ROM and you are HTC Dev unlocked you will have to flash the boot.img for the ROM or you will more than likely have troubles.

So, if you're having an issue of Wifi not working or keep 'Turning On...' you should enable the Smartflash in the 4EXT recovery menu and in the App itself after you flash any ROM. Asskicker explained it better than me in this thread in topic number 5.
Hope this will fix your issue

Thanks pal, I'll try this on my friend's HTC sensation or maybe have him do it... I'm guessing though that things will start to work even without re-installing or flashing the entire rom....
EDIT:
We tried this... still wifi doesn't work... maybe re-flashing Bricked Kernel will help... I'm just guessing...
I am HTCDev unlocked and I am runnin ViperS 1.41 is there anyway to flash Faux kernel? I tried the Viper-application and it didn't work.
I remember something with Hboot but I don't know where to get the kernel img.
If you are already using ViperS rom you should be able to flash Faux kernel from your recovery. Just download the kernel you want to flash, place it on your sd card, go to 4ext recovery (make sure smartflash is on) and just flash it. I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) along with "smartflash", the faux kernel will flash the boot.img automatically. Ohh and before you do anything make nandroid backup, so if it is not working then you will be able to restore your rom!
Well it didn't work and I can't restore from backups nor install new roms, it just bootloops all the time, I have tried to format all partitions (except sd card) with 4EXT tried with and without smartflash.. sigh.
A fresh start could help. If you are htcdev unlocked, s-on, 4ext recovery installed and you follow THIS guide, you will be able to install roms. If it doesn't boot up after you enabled smartflash in 4ext then do step "extra1" from that guide
Well in the HBoot it says that I am unlocked, but it's worth giving a try, I am pretty sure that you know better than I do,
I redid everything; First HTCDev unlock, flash recovery and then try to flash a new rom. It didn't work so now I will try to do a RUU.
Just enable smartflash and flash the kernel that will do for you
Now as you are SON you should always make sure that smartflash is enabled all the time..whatever you are flashing

Not to be offensive or anythign, but it's kinda hard to flash a kernel when I am stock in a bootloop. I'm downloading the RUU right now and I hope that it fixes it.
I have tried flashing, wiping, smartflashing etc. on Bruce's and ViperS (both 1.35 and 1.41) and also flash from backups. Everything have just bootlooped.
I don't get what you mean on "hard to flash a kernel when I am stock in a bootloop". You don't need to power up your rom to flash a kernel. You go into recovery, enable smartflash, choose the zip file from the sd card and that's it. Also try another kernel and see if that works. I recommend Overclocked Kernel v1.5.2 by SebastianFM as well. I am using that on stock sense rom and it works very well. If you flash a rom and you follow everything word by word in the thread was linked to you then it must work. If you still have issues, then try to post in that thread and someone will help you there.
No I don't need a rom to flash a kernel, but I need to be able to flash a rom, and apparently something went wrong (I don't know what). If you read my prior posts you'd understand what I mean. I couldn't flash any roms (and both ViperS and Bruce have a built into the rom kernel), so I were forced to get a RUU (The XE RUU is hard to find) and do everything from the very start (not just do step one).

did you try also to flash the boot.img of the rom manually?

You got me wrong mate. Under do step "extra1" I mean do step EXTRA1. There is a step called Extra1 in the thread I linked before. That explains how to flash boot.img manually.
Hello guys,
I'm new here and my device is HTC Sensation XE with stock rom, stock kernel, 4EXT Touch Recovery, Rooted, ICS. Today i decided to overclock, so i want to install Sebastian Kernel. First, i flash Powerfull Kernel Reset i got from Aroma Mod Thread from my 4EXT recovery. And then i flash Overclocked Kernel v 1.5.2 by SebastianFM and then i flash Mod for SB kernel v 2.4
I Rebooted it and then i stuck on the Splash Screen (White Background with HTC logo), just that. Please help me guys. I forgot to make the back up, because what? because i'm a noob. I don't know if there's a back up feature.
Did you have 3.33 firmware? If you didn't have 3.33, try flashing 3.33 firmware first and then flash the kernel again.
If nothing works, flashing back the stock ROM should help.
Note: 4EXT Touch Recovery has a 'Backup' option. It's a good practice to backup your entire ROM with this feature before flashing kernels or mods.

flash the boot.img of the rom manually
edit:if you are S-ON every time you are flashing a rom or an kernel before flashing always enable smartflash feature from 4ext
best wishes
Hi everyone, i'm running viper 2.4.1 with hboot 1.14 on my phone right now. However, when i tried to flash other custom kernels , i have a weird problem with my phone as it can't re-connect to wifi ( i set my phone to turn off wifi when screen is off). It's always says error and i have to reboot my phone to get it work again. Here what i've did
- flash elementalX 3.2 kernel=> wifi problem=> re-flashed kernel& boot.img=> still have wifi problem
- switch to beatmode 4.4 kernel=> same problem=> reflash kernel + boot.img from elementalX ( beatmode kernel doesn't have boot.img)==> problem still there
- flash stock kernel=> doesn't work, i guess i have to flash stock boot.img but i don't know where to find it
- fresh re-flash viper rom + beatmode kernel/elemenatalX=> wifi problem
- re-flash viper rom only ( with stock kernel comes along with it) => everything works perfectly
===> so i'm stucked right now. i tried to search in kernels thread, viper threads but there is no answers. Can someone help me to solve this problem?
P/s: i always wipe cache/davik cache before and after i flashed things
The kernel is the boot.img
Are you fastbooting the img
WiFi issues almost always are caused by the boot img
Try and fastboot the boot.img from the kernels that you want to use...and make sure their compatible with the Rom you choose

Viper Tom Is compatible with elementalx /beatmode kernels I believe. I also always flash boot.img (comes along with kernel) in fastboot mode.

Hi,
I was able to root and install recovery to HTC sensation, and was able to flash bricked kernel (Bricked-3.0-v1.4-ics). But after flashing the kernel, wife would not turn on. I tried factory reset, but still would not work. Any solution? IMy phone was in the stock rom with sense 3.6, HBoot 1.27. Any help would be really appreciated.

if you are using 4EXT recovery, have you configured it??
you can configure it (enable permanant Smartflash) using the 4EXT recovery control app (just google for it)

Yes, I flashed the insecure boot.img, and now the problem seems to be gone. Thanks very much for the help!
