HOW TO DEBLOAT YOUR VERY OWN CAR APP
By Mitch Chaiet
Hello xda-developers!
Welcome to my first guide after switching over to the One X. All new username on the forums, all new phone... life is good right now.
I absolutely love this phone.I was pleasantly surprised by all the features on this phone, coming from my beloved Captivate. With such a gorgeous screen, I figured "Hey.... this would be great in my car!" As soon as I walked out of the At&t store, I popped my new baby into my car dock, turned up my woofers, and hit the car app....
Where I was greeted to this.
There, in the bottom right hand corner, was some ********* I wasn't used to seeing. Bloatware.

I was NOT going to take this.
It is hard to imagine how pissed off I was. Beautiful white polycarbonate, bonded magically with the sweet curves of hardened glass.... all of this ruined by the ugly sight of TuneIn Radio popping up where it really shouldn't be. The frustration must be endless worldwide, as owner upon new owner realize that their carrier has setup some shoddy deal to add an app into the stock firmware of every single new phone they carry.
Today, friends, the frustration ends here.
Here is how to remove the ugly TuneIn Radio shortcut from the Car app and replace it with a nice, uniform Settings icon.
Navigate to 'Settings' > Scroll down and hit 'Apps' > Tap the 'All' tab
Scroll down until you find that pesky TuneIn Radio entry.
View attachment 1190562
Tap on it. You should arrive at the following screen.
View attachment 1190563
Now for the fun part! Click 'Disable' > Tap 'OK' to disable the app
Congratulations. You have successfully, as of now, debloated your car app. That's all that you had to do, but I doubt you'll be getting any awards from anyone just from following such a well laid out guide. You wanna cookie or something?
Open up your car app and see the result.

Man, I want that minute of my life back. Anyone who's uninstalled TuneIn (thank you TiBU) has the settings button already. But it's a good writeup for those who won't uninstall.
I was hoping to learn not just how to remove but replace the TuneIn with like, Google Play music or something. Anyone know how this can be done?

Lucky for you. I'm in the process off figuring that out. Gimme a day or two because I'm interviewing for my first job today!!
Already figured this one out, but good tip for those who didn't know

Or how about replacing the entire music screen with one that Incorporates google music?
Just a constructive criticism (nitpick): you use the term "de-bloat" in the text, but "de-spam" in the title. De-bloat seems like the more correct or appropriate term, so now sure why you have it different in the title. Just a pet peeve of mine, people using the term "spam" for things that are in fact not spam at all.
Thanks for the tip.

Given how uninstalling doesn't change the stability of the Car app, there has to be a pretty simple mod to swap out TuneIn for something else.
I wish I knew enough coding to give it a shot; I'd love to stick Spotify in there.

I personally think Tune in is awesome. I do wish i could use my paid version in the car app. Why do you hate it so much? It lets you listen to any radio staion you want for free. No adds, no commercials, its one of my favorite must have apps. Sound quality is great through bluetooth as well, i play it through my $10,000 Hertz/JL system and it sounds great. What is there not to like about it?

Same here, although in my perfect world, the stock music app would be replaced with Play Music...
I'm working on a mod for the car app that will let you customize the shortcuts, hopefully. It's tricky trying to figure everything out.

So far I love the phone. The feel and weight of the phone just seems better then my Captivate(which I gave to my wife). After not getting data on the phone unless I had WiFi on kind of sucked, but if you make a new network. You will be able to gain data back.
The only thing I am not liking is when I set up my HTC sense with Facebook, it put all my friends from facebook into my contacts list in my phone. I do not want all my friends on the list. I have tried and figure out how to delete from the list but cant figure it out. Anyone know how?
I also side loaded a few apps using the SLW program, once you download HTC sync on your computer it was easy.
I cant wait until this phone gets rooted so I can go in and change some stuff around, like ringtones. You can have custom ringtones when the phone is not plugged in to the USB but once you plug the USB in, it reverts back to the stock ringtones because it thinks shuts off your SD Card. Well you know what, I guess I can have the option to only have it charge will plugged in. That might work.
Other then that me loves the phone. Glade my wife had an upgrade so I could get the phone for $79.99 from Costco and a free charger with it. She loves my old Captivate so I was like hell ya ill trade ya!
Ha I love it...got a feeling alot of wives will be getting a captivate tommorow

Ok so in the people and contacts it has my correct contacts. What am talking about is when you look at the phone on the homescreen you see the button that says phone. If you click on that it will show every one of my Facebook friends, even the ones they I dont have in my contact list. I dont want them there.
I haven't mentioned to my wife yet... she's gonna wonder why the hell I'm getting up early on a Sunday morning, probably think I'm having an affair, lol.

You are, with the Inspire 4G. hahaha
I dont regret it for a second, yeah no Real 4G but we have root, roms and radios NOW.
Also, for those that just want to install apps and leave the phone stock you can go to this thread created by me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943174
The phone feels so polished and the screen is awesome, no Craptivate screen but it will turn heads.
We have accomplished so much in so little time.
Thanks to all the devs and porters out there, this is already a more than worthwhile device and for the price you can not beat it.
Atrix is just a bad memory of Motoblur hell, good luck trying to even root that damn thing.. hahaha

Ok I know what you're saying, and I didn't even realized my phone did that until you just mentioned it. I didn't see a way to get rid of them either.
If this is bothering you because you have to scroll through so many more names to get to the contact you want to dial, have you tried the t9 smart dialer feature? Lets say you want to dial 'John', instead of scrolling all the way down to his name, just spell out his name via t9 (5 for 'j', 6 for 'o', 4 for 'h', etc). The contacts that match what you're typing will appear and you don't have to scroll through all the names. My Evo and other HTC sense phones do this ( stock android doesn't, but you can download other dialers in the market that do). If you already knew this and just don't want the names to appear, can't help you there.

I really, really like this phone. My ear speaker is great, although the external speaker is a little weak. Not a huge deal though, just had to select the high pitched notifications to be sure to hear them.

i went to check this out in the store today. a few thoughts
-size is great. i compared it to my nexus one w/seidocase and it is only slightly larger... like less than a .25" larger in width and length
-weight is great. very comparable to n1 w/case
-sense 2.0 looked pretty slick.
-very fast... zero lag.
-my only stickler was the screen. i could see the "grid" dots on the display unit. is this typical of slcd?
Love it already and havent had it 5 hours yet, beats my old htc surround hands down.
This kicks the captivates ass all around, even unrooted with stock rom. Soooo glad I pulled the trigger... nice to have a decent exchange email client as part of the basic package (sorry touchdown, but the integration is a big plus... I hated the separate address books).
The more I use my phone the more I realize everything works and works well.
Have installed pretty much everything there is and it plays or runs them without a hiccup.
Obviously the only apps it will not run are the ones that require root. My plan is to do this very soon so I can take advantage of those as well.
Every single game I've installed is smooth with no lag.
Emulators work with zero issues, my plan is to try the the psx one next.
You can not measure the battery life right away, it has to get used to a few charges first. See the Desire HD forums and they will say the same.
I've made some calls and can say that it sounds great, I've tried both the loudspeaker and the ear speaker and both sound fine to me.
Obviously the small speaker will not be that loud especially at first. Still planning to use DSP Manager to see if it fixes it.
I've still to try out the gps while moving in the vehicle as well.
Build quality is very satisfying and is what's expected from HTC.
Where I had trouble getting 3G I am now getting a constant H+ according to the phone.
What else can I say I made an excellent choice and with the Sideload Wonder Machine, root, radio and custom ROMs there's room to make this phone even better with those options.
Sent from my illmatic Inspire 4G / Desire HD
This phone is awesome. I have yet to see any posts showing interest in their phone, beyond changing ROMs like its a disease.
I recently found out I can use 'Six-Axis controller' to connect a ps3 controller to my phone and effectively have a portable n64 console with me. All I need to do now is find a Conker's Bad Fur Day or Banjo-Kazooie ROM.
I recently found out about LCD density changing and messed around with it a lot. 180 makes our Skyrocket look sexy. (But now I'm experiencing market compatibility issues so I need to look more into it).
I like organization, so SD-Maid was a nice find and I'm going to learn Titanium Backup to increase my battery life. Just need to find a freeze list.
I found the site My ColorScreen so theming will be a task soon undertaken, as soon as the necessities are figured out.
So come on, share some cool things about your phone. Whether it's a cool Llama task you made, new homescreen setup, an app you think people should know about, a ROM you like (AOKP + CM9, thank you guys), or an important tip you should know (I didn't know Titanium Backup could restore my folder settings in Nova Launcher, that would have saved time).
Be a little positive guys.
Why is it that an incorrect, naive post about an OTA update for Skyrocket can get two pages instantly full of people *****ing about how useless the thread is (then don't reply to it smartass).
While a thread with the capacity to help people find some cool things about their phone gets nothing.
I hear the app "LCD Density Modder Pro" can fix the market compatibility issues. It's a paid app though.
Any more info on the six-axis controller and how to use the phone as a "portable n64"? That sounds interesting!
Edit: Ah, a little bit of googling answered my question about that six-axis controller.. didn't realize it was an app. Makes sense now. Which N64 emulator do you use?
I don't root my phone but I love it to death! I also agree that negative posts get more responses than US news media stories.
That being said I love that flipboard app and I'm going to be buying a new Samsung LED TV. I've heard that we can turn our phones into remote controls for the actual TV, if not yet its on the horizon.
I also use mine for web browsing mostly and I'm looking for a cool app like MATLAB based or something that has Physics and Calculus formulas all over. I hope this thread gets going. Mad thanks to the OP. This is the first thanks I've used.

I currently have a Samsung TV, and it's true that we can use our phone as a remote control, as long as your TV has wifi and you connect your phone to the same network. You'll just need the app conveniently named "Samsung Remote" lol. It's free in the market. Works for their blu-ray players too I think.

Mupen64AE, pulled for free from the developers site here. You just run sixaxis and start the emulator, then map the buttons (less than 10 seconds) and you're good to go. Emulators were always a cool idea to me but they didn't translate well for certain games, but honestly with the analog sticks and actual triggers its a perfect experience.

Every time I'm scrolling through the market looking at apps, it kicks me back to the top of the list after viewing an app. Its really frustrating when you scroll through 50 apps trying to find one you want, click on one and decide you want to go back and keep looking and then it makes you start all the way over. It didn't use to do it like that until market got changed to play store. I've tried many different ROMS with no other outcomes. Anyone know a way to change this? Its really annoying.

Hopefully someone can chime in with some knowledge about this. If there is no fix, then I smh until it falls off my shoulders at Google. Its a complete fail.

It's the way Google have made it so until they decide they want to sort it, it will always be like that.
''Evil corrupts the mind of the weak but fails to feed off the mind of the strong''
Funny, though. The old Market did not kick back to the beginning of the list, but Google Play does...ironic.
But Google must have a reason for doing thing, because it definitely is not a RAM issue.
Side note: If possible, access Google Play from a PC, and push the download to the specified device(s). It makes life MUCH easier. Trust me on that.

It makes me question Google. Why would they even think someone would want to scroll through 20 apps, click one, hit back and have to start all over. Its the main reason I barely have any apps on my phone now. Oh and thanks for the tip. Haven't thought of that.

Yes, that was an utterly TERRIBLE decision/oversight/whatever by Google. Especially when I am about 120 apps down the list.

I hope this is the right place to post this. I have owned and really loved my N7000 for several months now. As an ex-Palm user, the SPen stylus was a huge draw. I began to note, however, that over time the accuracy and the location of the floating pointer of my SPen began to drift. I searched and found many people complaining about this and saw multiple posts of "fixes" to try. I even found a paid app in the marketplace that claims to deal with this. I recalled that on my various Palm devices I occasionally had to re-run the touchscreen calibration routine and began to look for one of these thinking it should be built-in. But I could not find one that actually seemed to help.
After more digging I discovered a technique that seemed to work. Simply changing the SPen's dominant hand setting back and forth from my setting of Left to Right and back to Left again made a big difference. But doing so was inconvenient and really had to be done with some regularity to keep things really perfect. After more searching, I discovered how changing the SPen device's dominant hand (not the actual preference setting but seemingly communicating directly with the device) could be triggered by a script. However, this requires ROOT and some way to launch the script. I tired this and found it worked well.
So I decided to wrap this technique up in a little app - my first real Android app. It also requires ROOT and uses much the same technique as the script. You simply tap the app's icon and the quick change is performed - there is no UI. The app determines your current dominant hand setting from the preference file and then tells the device to switch to the opposite hand and back again. Nothing too big here but it seems to work for me (as well as some others who posted this "fix" idea).
I would think it good for this to be scheduled to run regularly (maybe once every .5 - 1 hour) so one never has to be bothered. But for now I haven't figured out how to do this and my guess is there are free apps available that can run this on a schedule. I was able to find such a program to run the script in this manner.
But I have not tested this on any but my own N7000. Will it work for others? Will it work on US carrier's versions of the Note? Will it work on the Note II or the new tablet that has an SPen? I am not sure and am hoping others out there will try this and let me know their findings and suggestions.
Thanks
EDIT: Please note that I have moved the APK file to the Google Play Store. Here is the link.

For those that have it, Tasker should allow one to schedule this activity as needed. For those that don't, I recommend looking into it.

Also, I can no report that I have this running on a schedule using the Scheduling function of the excellent SManager app from the marketplace. I have been using that to run the onandroid script automatically to perform nightly backups. It can run executable programs as well as scripts. To run the .apk you use the android activity manager program (/system/bin/am) using the following command line:
/system/bin/am start -n com.whitedavidp.reset.spen/.MainActivity
Cool!

Thanks, I will look into that. I am so new to this I kept things as simple as possible. A service would seem the right way to handle built-in scheduling. But I would also want to retain the tapping of the app icon so it can be run on command in case the user has set the interval too large and wants to reset things right now.
thats a nice one

Feedback on GB or Jelly Bean?
I should have mentioned in my original post that I have tested this only on Stock Touchwiz ICS 4.0.4 using Hydracore 4.3 kernel. It would be helpful to know if this works and does its job well on other platforms. Lacking adequate hardware, I can think of no way to ascertain this except asking others to try and give me feedback. Other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Thank you for this app! I'm using an SGH-T889 Note II and the app worked perfectly. It could just be my imagination, but it really seems like my stylus is way more accurate, so I'm assuming it worked! Just thought I'd let ya know in case you still needed to know if it worked on a different phone. Thanks again!

Ok that's cool I'm glad I could help (even though it's miniscule lol). I can also say now that it's not just my imagination, because it actually does work. This morning I had some time to kill before a meeting so I was doodling it up. After a while I noticed the S Pen accuracy was really starting to slip, so I ran your app again and the difference was amazing! I'm really surprised that Samsung didn't intergrate an app like this, because you'd figure they'd recognize the precision drops over time by now. Anyway I'm definitely glad I found this man and once again I really appreciate your hard work!

App runs on paranoid Android.
Not sure about tw roms but on cm/pa and aokp roms pointer icon is always slightly towards top left of screen. If phone is rotated, rather than point to the 'new' top left it is still pointing at the volume up button.
To fix landscape we need someone to work out how to convince the input that the screen is 1280 x 800 instead of 800 x 1280, this (I think) means the spen input would need to recalibrate every time your screen rotates eating batteries for breakfast.
Right handed use landscape where bottom of phone moves right (anticlockwise) you can still see it its just off. If you swing bottom of phone left pointer hides behind spen

Thanks for the info and response. Can you please describe: (a) does my app help when in portrait mode? and (b) can you describe how the pointer is off when you are in landscape (which direction and by how much)? and (c) when you return to portrait mode does the pointer seem right?
I have a more complete version offering scheduling and other convenience features coming and will put both on the marketplace once I figure out how to do that.
PS - I think I read somewhere that toggling auto-rotate on/off may help "fix" the S-Pen and I wonder if this will work for you?
Cheers!

Thanks for your info. Good to know that the app doesn't crash on Paranoid. My phone is TW ICS 4.0.4 with Hydracore 4.3 kernel. On my phone I do not see the issue with landscape mode that you and phasA describe. I can say that I really wasn't liking the way auto-rotate was working on my phone (sometimes just too sensitive). So I have installed this app which basically makes me confirm that I want to rotate. Perhaps this has something to do with my I am not seeing this issue?
I still didnt get the use of this app, sorry i am not at all rude but how can changing dominant hands reset the pointer settings. I mean what does it has to do with resetting the pen settings???

Ok, this is a really specific question so may not be one you can help with but throwing it out there.
Switched from an iPhone to the S8+ and love it except for one thing. The one app I use daily and intensely is Gymaholic on iOS. A very detailed and customisable workout app that lets me input my individual daily workouts, sync them to my Apple Watch, tweak them on the watch as I workout and then have it monitor my heart rate and reps and sync back. It is a fantastic app. I love it.
I can't find anything similar in terms of quality or features on Android that plays nicely with Android Wear. There was one called Rithmio but it looks like they went bust a few months back.
This is a deal breaker for me and I really don't want to have to return the S8. Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks so much.

If you need your phone to tell you if you've had a good lifting session mate you're doing it wrong.
Ah XDA, helpful as usual. I don't have an answer for you OP, but I do know that Android is missing a lot of the polished iOS apps. It is very likely that there is no equivalent to what you are looking for. This is part of the reason why I keep both an iPhone and flagship Android most times.
I keep track of my progress mentally, don't really write anything down.
However, I'm sure there are a bunch of apps that would suit you.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), you just have to take the time and do your own research.
A quick 5 second google search and I found this:
It's called -> JEFIT Workout Tracker Gym Log

I'm on a very similar spot as you mate.
I've had my back and forth experiences with iOS, but eventually always come back to Android.
For all my Android years, I've consistently used JEFIT and it hasn't turned me down. It does have its downsides, but all apps do.
I suggest you try it out. On their beta test program (I believe you can freely join to it) they are experimenting with Android Wear support.
Let me know how it goes!
Cheers

Dunno what your logic is there but I use the app to put my workouts in so that I can follow them on my watch and then if I decrease or increase the weight, I can update it and it syncs back to the phone to tell me when I next come to do that exercise what weight i
lifted to failure. Much easier than a pen and paper. I'm doing German Volume Training right now which is very intense and keeping a log is crucial rather than just guessing by looking at the weights. So yeah, I do lift, bro [emoji23]

Lol bruh I wish I really cared:laugh:
Just do curls with your S8+ itself, as the title of the thread implies. About 2,000 reps should get those arms ripped. A heavy case will add a nice challenge.

Damn Phil he can joke around but I cant...ok!
I use Progression, it does the job for me and works with android wear.
Just a suggestion but if I were you, and you REALLY liked that iOS only app maybe you could just get a used iPod touch or something? That way you have a device just for music at the gym and the app you like. The Bluetooth range on the s8 is supposed to be better too so maybe you can use it to Bluetooth tether internet to the iPod. Just a thought.
+1 for jefit!Very usefull app if you want to track your reps sets and used weight per exercise.
