Unlock bootloader Verizon version coming soon - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Would like to see how this is going to work

we need to combine all 4-5 threads currently on this topic lol.

This is a bad move. Why not release a fully dev-able phone from the start like other carriers? The $599 price tag would only drive devs away and who would buy a carrier locked phone at full price when they can get the int version at maybe the same price that can be used on any carriers and has a better developer community?

That's crazy. This whole locked boot loader thing is a mess.

Because the international version won't work on Verizon's CDMA network.

I'm hoping that this whole thing is just to get money out of the lazy modders, our locked bootloaders can be (and will be) cracked with more work compared to the developer's version.
Just hoping that's all it boils down to.

I'm wondering if the locked Verizon S3 might be forgotten and left in the dust if most developers and power users get the unlocked version to avoid the hassle.

Left T-Mobile for Verizon, Now the Jokes on Me

Weeks ago when I made the decision to go with the S3 I decided that I didn't want to get stuck with the oddball US version (ie T-Mobile with no LTE).
After over a decade as a T-Mobile customer I jumped ship for Verizon and ordered my shiny new S3.
Now I find that the Verizon version is the only S3 on the planet with a locked bootloader AND Verizon has made absurd changes to the UI such as a persistent ongoing wifi notification with no way to disable it. They also REMOVED the standard wifi toggle.

I haven't even paid my first bill yet and I am irritated as hell with all of this. I guess the grass isn't always that much greener. Blah !
Sorry, just had to vent a bit. I'm normally the last person to complain about anything but I guess the stupidity of all of this tripped me off.

It is a different notification, not the connected one. It will ask you to connect even if wifi is off from what I understand. (I may be wrong on that)

If you are within 14 days of activating the phone, you should be able to just cancel without any penalty according to this link:

This look like an older page, but it mentions a 30 day money back guarantee:

Yeah, I understand that but my days of traveling outside of the USA are over. I have zero plans for any international travel these days so in my case the LTE route made the most sense.
Now that the phone has root I'm around 90% sure the notification will be removed by users soon enough. The toggle still irks me but the devs are still making astounding progress. Everyone's jumping on the "we're doomed" bandwagon a bit soon, myself included. I didn't think we'd get root, but we have. I also didn't think it was even possible to get custom roms but they're making progress right now, just getting around the bootloader. Consider the fact that the phone isn't even in everyones hands yet and I think we've got some hope left. Just let them do their thing.

I sincerely hope that Tmo improves in the area of updating devices for you with the S3.
I'm an original Galaxy S owner (Vibrant on Tmo) and they completely abandoned it within 9 months of release. The Vibrant is the ONLY Galaxy S that was never officially updated to Gingerbread, and the GPS on this device has never worked properly.
I'm running an ICS rom on my Vibrant these days, but it still has it's idiosyncrasies that are annoying as hell.
The ironic thing is that I chose the Verizon S3 because I thought I'd be getting the "common" US version of the phone. As it turns out it's more of an oddball than the rest. sigh.
My great hope is that the stock version of the phone runs so well that I really won't care if I can't reflash it. I am also quite confident that we'll get an official version of Jellybean so I'm not feeling completely hopeless about the situation.

Haha, no matter. I'm facepalming myself at how much Verizon has screwed up this launch. Delaying the phone, shipping them seemingly randomly, the locked bootlauncher, and the bugged 4g. Verizon's made a huge mess of this launch and I'm sure it'll lead to some blushing and "please love us please?" treatment.

The complicating factor in my situation is that my wife switched with me, and she got the Droid 4 which she really likes (being the type that just HAS to have a hardware keyboard).
I'm probably going to have to stay put for now.
If the stock S3 runs smoothly and we are able to root and "fix" the wifi notification thing, I'll be satisfied for now.
Sad face... SORRY DUDE.
I'm a little fed up with T-mobile myself, and I've been with them since they were VOICESTREAM... so a LOOONG TIME. Up until June 2011 my 4 lines all had the $2.99 unlimited data (no 3g/4g)+30 mms deal... We were contract free for YEARS AND YEARS. Unlimited everything, blah blah blah... using iPhone's on edge so 3g/4g didn't matter... (still using iphones btw, except me - now trying the gs3). Then with the rumors of the AT&T merger in June 2011, I decided to lock in to a contract thinking I would get UNLIMITED data on AT&T for whatever the t-mobile price was ($20 for unlimited data, with the first 2gb at 4g? or something like that- whatever the promotion was)... At the time (6/2011) I didn't buy any new handsets even though all 4 lines qualified for full upgrade, because we all have iPhone 4's... I was told that IF/WHEN I wanted to buy a handset I could at full upgrade price *WITHOUT* re-extending that contract...
WELL - Guess what, NOPE. If I buy phones NOW, I have to re-sign for another 2 years starting from the purchase date of the phone.... I complained, moaned, *****ed.... They don't care.
RIGHT NOW I'LL SAY: Come June 2012, I'm LEAVING T-mobile and NEVER LOOKING BACK. I can go to a pre-paid service, save money, get better service, high speed data, etc... That may change in 12 months, but we'll see.
I jumped from Verizon to t-mo simply because after having a thunderbolt, razr, and a gnex I know exactly how bad most everything with lte is on battery life. Now on t-mobile I'm getting 4+ hours of screen time and 23 meg d/l. Best of both world for me.

Odien(kexec) Vs Sprint's unlocked bootloader

I'm contemplating whether to return my GSIII and cancel my Verizon account within the two week period for the unlocked bootloader from Sprint, touchwiz is bad enough WITHOUT all the VZW bloat! I'm hesitant because of VZW's premium coverage and my monthly rates were grandfathered, but I'm totally against their public stance on rooting/modding. If it weren't for this community, Verizon would have lost my business years ago despite 4G lte, I live in a well covered 4G area.
Would it be wise to switch to Sprint while I still can? I know the awesome devs here are working on a permanent solution but is it logical to stay with a company that is against a good part of the reason why their devices sell?

This is pretty turrrrible. how can they do that? Unlocked bootloader for 15$ per month? Might make me hold onto my S3 for alot longer than I anticipated.

Well, that's one site, so it may not be true. My guess is that Moto and Google won't work together and make a non-Nexus phone. But, in the case that this is true, its reason #187324 to get the hell of Verizon, as I will be doing in August. Easily the worst carrier CS-wise. Cost me $65 to return the DNA. I'm just done. T-Mobile take my significantly smaller sum of money.
I doubt any of that info is true. Just my two cents.

Even if true, you should unlock the bootloader using tools found on XDA and then donate the $15 to the awesome devs here, thus making the world a better place

T-Mobile service is terrible though. Two bars of 4G in my bedroom with verizon, data dropping on the note II on T-Mobile. Literally would drop 4G to 3G and back and forth and data was unusable. Both sat pretty close to -111dBm.
Might be going back to sprint. Least I know from having had them I get their 3G. Can't wait for their LTE.

Lol in my area, tmo gets >20 mbps hspa+ speeds. Sprint has actually no service. Verizon is the best, but eh I'll deal.
Not being an official statement, I suspect the article is full of fertilizer.
....sigh...just because it's on the internet it doesn't mean it's true. Plus for it to be a trend, this would need to be happening with other devices already, which is not.

Lol if this is true, Verizon is full of shit.. You can unlock your phones as long as you pay us. LOL
I read the article on droid life, it has to do with unlocking the phone to use on another carrier.I think we'll be just fine if it truly is bad why would they start charging $15a month extra for unlocked phone's (which is ridiculous) they may have the best service but they truly become money hungry....T-Mobile is slowly catching up...maybe in the future they'll take big red's crown.never under estimate the under dog.my opponent did and lost

Well, since the one device has all the frequencies we would assume that it could be used interchangeably. However, if you buy it straight from sprint its really up to them (but they should be required to unlock it as long as your account is in good standing).
I'm hoping the playstore just sells one version that will work on all carriers.

No, since you used the Galaxy Nexus, if you're one Sprint, there's your answer. Verizon sell 'world phones' but it come through them first, with the software approved and ESN allowed to be activated, there will be two versions if they're going to be a CDMA version.

This is what I am hoping for. My Sprint contract doesn't end until February but my SGS2 is starting to show its age and what can I say...I get impatient.
I am hoping to buy a N5 unlocked and it would be great if I could buy it at launch, do a device swap on my Sprint plan so I can use the newer handset for the last few months of the contract, and then buy a T-Mo prepaid SIM for the $30/mo plan, port my number, and cancel Sprint.
I'm gonna have to keep an eye on things to see how that works out since I don't want to just assume it will work and I end up screwing things up somehow. I mean...I can wait until February if I have to, I'd just rather have the new handset sooner than later if I'm already buying it outright with no subsidy.

Verizon and Samsung Pay

I can't believe that they're now saying that Verizon is probably not going to support Samsung pay. That was one of my main reasons I wanted to get this phone. Why does verizon always have to screw its customers ? Other threads are even saying you don't even get the earbuds with the Verizon model. WTF Verizon

The only thing I am glad about is that they are coming out and saying this now rather than right before Samsung Pay launches. At least now people have the chance to jump ship.
I hope they change their minds
I have decided if Verizon is not offering Samsung pay the day of launch I'm done. I had att before and never had an issue. I'm tired of these games that Verizon plays. Not even any headphones with the dang phone. Little things like this erk the crap out of me. The stubbornness of not doing any type of data rollover drives me up a wall.
This will also give some time to see if Samsung releases a 128gb note (but probably not).

Verizon takes forever in evaluating these types of things. Just chill till a 100% official statement is made everything has been speculation as of yet. It boils down to money and if Samsung wants this to work Verizon prob will need some sort of kick back
