Bad earpiece? Exchanging 7/12, but am I alone on this? [VZW] - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I got my pre-order last Friday and I love everything about this phone except for the earpiece. If I don't have it at under 50% volume it crackles/rattles. I use a headset or use my built in BT in my car most of the time so I didn't really notice the problem until today. And I mean it is bad, really bad. Using a wired or wireless headset sounds great though - crystal clear - so it's not a reception issue.
I stopped by a VZW store today and they said I could either call the national account # and have a new one shipped or come in Thursday when they receive a shipment. I think I'll try my luck at the store.
I am curious though. Has anyone else had any issues with the earpiece on their S3? I'm guessing I just got a dud.. it happens.

It doesn't seem like anyone cares, but if anyone else stumbles upon this thread, my replacement phone works great and the earpiece sounds super clear.

The loudspeaker of XDAII?

I bought my XDA II three days ago. Is it normal that when I play MP3s through Media Player by the loudspeaker, it crackles a little bit on many of the songs? Also when I talk on the phone, the sound quality by the speaker is not very crisp. Is this normal, and if not, can I fix it?
Mines does and my friends does. So I guess it is normal, a bit crap I know but its still a great device.
at least its loud =P
It is definetely a great device. I just wanted to know if it normal, or should I go to the shop where I bought it from. But since you also have similar problem, then it fine.
Well, I sent my first one back because of the crackling. Thought it was a fault unit, but the replacement did the same. In fact the replacement crackles during normal voice calls, but I gave up complaining. The new XDAIIs doesnt do it though.
I found that the buttons near the loudspeaker (the Contacts and Calendar buttons) vibrate causing some of the buzzing. Almost want to put a dab of silicone or something soft that allows the buttons to be functional, yet reduce buzzing. Anybody notice or try this?
Yeah I noticed the buttons did that too (mostly the volume slider in my case). That seems like quite a good idea about the silcone. I'm tempted to try it, but a little scared that I might completely mess it up.

Sound from ear piece is too distort

Is it just my pro? or are most like that? I just got my pro yesterday, and they ear piece sounds too distort. It sounds like a crappy earpiece, it vibrates and sounds way too fuzzy and buzzy and distorted. Is there any way to fix that? or should I take it back for another pro?
same problem here
My ear piece sounds distorted (muffled), no matter who i call, when i switch to the speaker or put on the headsets that came with the phone it sounds awesome.
i purchased mine through bestbuy and sprint.
i went to bestbuy today to try and exchange it because this is the only problem i have with this phone and the new phone that the CSR took out of a new box had the same problem.
I think this is with all of the sprint htc touch pros, i guess more people should reply to this thread and let us know if they have the same problem of not.
i emailed htc about this and they said to hard reset the phone......why would that fix the problem since i just bought it saturday and i havent put much of anything on it.
ANYONE THAT CAN POST THEIR EXPERIENCE, IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
I went to sprint and I tried out the Diamond, the speaker on it, sounded a bit better than mine. And yes its just the ear piece on the phone, on speaker it sounds normal, and as well with the headset. Unfortunately all best buys around my area are sold out...
Take the plastic cover off the front plate. It is covering the ear piece causing the sound to be muffled.
I purchased two Touch Pro's from best buy...two different stores, and can confirm that the audio is completely different between the two. One is perfect...audio is wayyy better than my previous mogul. My wife's touch pro however sounds aweful, totally distored at every volume level.
Called sprint last night, they said the phone was too new for them to comment and that they haven't recieved any complaints about the issue.
Unfortunately, there are no more touch pro's in denver to exchange with so...I'll have to hold on till the next batch arrives at best buy.
Mine sounds OK at medium volume, but with the volume up all of the way, it sounds terrible! I bought mine at Best Buy (St. Louis) on 10/27
same problem.. have not talked enough yet to really care. just got last night, so i will know in a day or two if i can stand it.
definitley the same experience here, muffled sound from the ear piece and, yes, I did remove the plastic. Almost sounds like a busted speaker sounds. It has been this way from straight out the box (Sunday monring at best buy in IL)
I did apply the audio patch to increase the volume... but it didn't help. It's really tinny at higher volumes. It is actually painful to listen to!
has anyone tried doing a hard reset after encountering this problem?
and if so, did it work or is it the same?
Hard reset has been performed twice, and I still have the problem. I don't think its software related, rather than the speaker itself. It sounds like a very crappy speaker, like a toy. At high pitch noises, it crackles and its horrible. it sounds tinny, like a tin can. Imagine 99 cent ear buds bought at a 99 cent store, and playing something like metallica on them. It sounds horrible.
Unfortunately, I am having the same problem. I removed the plastic cover and it helped a bit, but there is obviously still a problem.
On my old Samsung, I always had the volume level to the earpiece turned all the way down and I could hear all calls perfectly. On the Touch Pro, I have to crank the earpiece as loud as it will go and the voices are still very muffled and sound distant. I do not know if perhaps I got a bad unit, but if I was in a crowded room or driving with the windows down, I would not be able to have a conversation even with the volume at maximum.
This may be a deal breaker.
Can someone please post the info for the registry hack and how it has worked for others?
just went to bestbuy, exchanged my phone, and haleluya, it now sounds like my olg htc mogul and like every phone is suppose to sounds, CRYSTAL CLEAR....
thanks to everyone for the postings....if you have this problem, exchange, do not wait for a firmware upgrade, because this might be the hardware which a FW upgrade cannot fix.
After a week with my phone, they finally got more in stock, went to best buy and exchanged it, now it sounds crystal clear. Exchange it! Problem solved.
But what about the volume, has that been heightened on the two new phones purchased from bestbuy

the volume has not been heightened, now it just sounds clear.
to me the phones earpiece never needed to be louder.
but thats just me
It's definately a hardware issue, I had this issue, exchanged it at BB, and now it's gone. I went from abuild date of 10/14 to 10/15
ruined,
how do you determine the build date? I have the same issue, so guess I will be exchanging mine too, but if there is a way to determine if the new one I get is from a bad batch before I activate it, that would be good.

My earpiece was great till last week!! Now it sounds like it was busted. Vibrates a lot. As HTC doesn't support my country, does anyone knows how to remove the earpiece?

I had the same problem: till last week my earpiece was working but last week was dead, I can not hear anything. If you find how to remove and exchange the earpiece please send also to me on a PM.
Thanks a lot!

GSM buzz in earpiece?

I have a Fuze that I purchased shortly after launch from AT&T. I've been noticing lately I can hear a GSM buzz in the earpiece during silences. Anybody else notice this, or do I have a poorly-shielded earpiece? I still have an iPhone as a personal phone, and can't hear any buzz during silence, but its also a quieter earpiece. But it is the only other phone I have to compare it to.
A properly functioning phone shouldn't do this. My Fuze is silent, no buzz. My Razr that I just replaced did this after owning it for about a year. It was loud, annoying as heck, and the people on the other end could hear it too. I suspect it was due to a cracked solder joint connecting the shield to the system ground. I would definitely see about exchanging your phone!
Bringing this one back from the dead. I just got a replacement Fuze, and after using it today its doing the same thing. I got a refurb, and it looks like it is from the same batch as my original phone. The datecodes on the back under the rear cover are close, and so are the revision codes. I'm debating to call AT&T again, or just wait and call in another replacement later. I get the feeling that I'm just going to keep getting refurbs that are the same production range and have the same problem.
I've heard this faintly on several GSM phones...and I've heard many others say they notice it. Unless it is extremely loud or something I just ignore it and go on...it's the same buzz heard through computer speakers, etc., when the phone is close to them. Same affect.

call quality bad?

For some reason when I talk over the Phone without a head peice everyone tells me it sounds muffled or like if I had my mouth full of food. Could this be results of me still having the plastic the phone came with? Or its the phone its self?
+1 i have the same problem !
Yes, Me too
And it's my second phone.
I came from an HD2 and I'm not liking this phone.
The second phone is 10 times better all round but still not good.
Do they all have bad call quality?
I.e should I keep getting it replaced or repaired or accept it as it is?
When I've had bad call quality or reception previously O2 have sent me a new SIM Card. Why? Can the Sim affect these problems?
I exchanged the phone and SIM card but it's the same !
EDIT: I have a sound robotic after 50% of volume !
Have you tried recording to see if it's still there? I recorded myself right now and everything seems normal to me
Swyped from my HTC Sensation
My problem is that I hear bad in my phone speaker in call !
hey i guys i think i have a solution i was reading another thread where they were stating how you can get another battery cover by calling htc and complaining about the screen making a cracking noise. so i went ahead and did it and the battery cover i received in the mail gives me better reception and no drop calls which i was experiencing alot with the old battery cover. also i haven't been told that i sound muffled over the phone. i don't know if this is the solution but its worth you guys giving it a try
Thanks for that Info.
Certainly sounds like HTC in the US have acknowledged the problem.
I will call HTC Uk in the morning (and just hope they are aware of the problems and the new back cover)
I've had several converations with O2 and they acknowledged the problem as they kept asking me to repeat myself before it started going crackly and finally dropped the call.
After several attempt at a decent conversation I gave up and called them on the Landline
Called HTC today and seems like the back cover isn't a fix for this problem.
However Google is supposed to be working on a fix to give to HTC, and for me to keep an eye on the HTC website or HTC on Facebook.
I will probably have given up with the phone by then!

HTC USA sent me a new back cover because mine was awful. I also have crappy phone call quality both through the speaker and bluetooth. When I got the new back cover it fit much, although not perfectly. That being said, call quality is still crap so for me it has nothing to do with the cover. Called HTC back and they said they were aware and working on a fix. No timeframe for an update
I can confirm that certain sensations just have bad mics. I know 2 other friends with them and one of them has a bad mic like me. People often say that it sounds like I'm underwater at times. If I put a mic on, the problem goes away.

Question Earpiece/loudspeaker quality

Hi,
how is the loudspeaker quality for people who already own the phone?
For me the speakers are not that great. Especially the top one in the earpiece. Calls aren't that great and listening to voice messages or even videos and music is just ok.
I get scratching in the top one pretty early. It depends on the audio quality/source but sometimes it already scratches around 60% of max volume. Especially in calls and voice messages.
It sound very good. Less bass then my s21U, but still ok. Calls are very ok too.
So no scratching for you?
I have got an S20 here and it definitely has a better sound quality with less distortion/scratching...
I was quite impressed. Especially in flex mode when both speakers face forward. Definitely one of the highlights of this phone if you ask me.
So no scratching when listening to voice mails on higher volumes? Just tried video and there the quality is fine. It is voices where my speaker struggles.
The sound Quality if better (subjectively) than my S21+, which I traded in. Less tinny and no distortion so far on loudspeaker call in flex mode.
So in my experience the speakers especially the one on the top is worst than the ones of the S20 which is sad.
One thing I noticed in addition to the bad sound quality is that the speaker grill of the earpiece doesn't cover the 3 holes completely. I am able to look through the holes. The grill only covers a part of the holes. Haven't seen this before. Can anybody confirm this or do I indeed have a faulty product?
I will try to describe this as best I can and you can decide if this is the same thing or if yours appears to be missing parts.
I have the three holes. Inside them, there is what looks like plastic coming from the top that covers about half of the opening. If I angle the phone to see into the gap, there is another cover under it.

Ok, I guess than it's supposed to be like that. Looks a bit weird to me.
How is the sound quality on your end? The quality itself is ok for me, what annoys me is the distortion I get pretty early around 60-70% of max volume depending on the audio. Especially calls, video calls and voice messages get distorted really quickly. Video and music mostly seem to be fine.

Haven't made any real calls yet, but everything else seemed normal. I should probably test that before the return period runs out. I'll let you know.

Feedback is appreciated . Voice messages in Whatsapp for example, same for Whatsapp and Duo video calls and phone calls as well... Distortion and scratching in the upper range coming out of the earpiece/upper speaker.
I have to decide if I keep the device until Saturday. It would be great if a few more people who own the phone could give some feedback regarding the loudspeaker of the phone during voice and video calls and voice messages
Sounds defective. Just finished testing and it was not only clear, but loud. I know with previous phones, I couldn't hear a thing at any less than one step below the max volume. I had this one at half and it was just as loud. If you happened to start at max, it's possible a speaker blew out. The thing they never tell you is that they aren't truly meant to run at that volume for anything more than a minute or two.

Thanks for the feedback. What confuses me is that I get the distortion only in calls or voice messages. No problems when listening to music or videos.

I have heard rumors the speakers are separate between the two, but I'm not sure.
I know Samsung tends to send phones to be repaired over replaced, even when it just released last week. Hopefully they don't give you any trouble if you decide to flat out return it, though.

Yeah the service is ridiculous. I love Android and use it for years for various reasons. But these encounters with bad service drag my mind towards apple. I already contacted Samsung. They offered an exchange. But I have to send in my flip first. As this is currently my only phone due to sending my S20 in for the trade-in I will not be able to do that. I am using the phone with dual sim for private and business purposes. I will try to force Samsung to send me a new one prior to sending mine back. If they don't accept I will withdraw my order and get something else. The trade-in might get me into trouble as it seems. Will never purchase over Samsung directly again. Never had issues with Amazon or apple...
