What is the point of lockscreens anyway? - General Questions and Answers

I've always wondered about this, it just seems that we need a lockscreen just to play with a slider or some other cool touch mechanism. There is nothing "lock" about lockscreens without a password obviously. But even when you do, what's the point of doing the sliding anyway? Like I might accidentally enter the correct password and unlock it?
Nowdays phones are all capacitive touchscreens your pocket or things in it won't accidentally operate your phone right? Even the power /unlock buttons are extremely difficult to accidentally activate. On the iPhone you might accidentally activate the home button, but not the buttonless or touch buttons, yet they all have lockscreens.
I'm starting to think that we have lockscreens just because iPhone has it, for whatever reason

I actually had my Droid Incredible in my pocket while working on a job site with habitat for humanity, and it ended up getting unlocked and calling my wife (redial of last phone call). I have the widgetlocker lockscreen app, which is easier to bypass than the stock lockscreen. So, while they may feel like a nuisance, they still serve a purpose

There's your reason right there. On my Samsung Galaxy SII, I can configure for no lock screen. Power button turns the screen on/off.

The OP has a good point. A very good point. I still use lock screens cause the quick reference to my Widget locker is paramount but if this isn't you; seriously why do you need a lock screen?

It IS possible to pocket dial as all of your body can "use" these stupid things, even through pockets

I KNOW RIGHT! And why the hell do books have a front cover!?

IMHO OP's got a point!

I like not pocket dialing people multiple times a day, or accidentally initiating a paid service, or accidentally changing settings. Other than that, yeah, it's pointless.

The point of a lockscreen is so you don't accidentally send a garbled text message to your ex. Or call her.

Lock screen just there to make you touch your phone more. They creeping into your brain and making you DO things! Lol!!!

they also help if some sort of botnet is trying to screw you or at least verify you are human

Possibly because I put my smartphone into my pocket, and don't feel like pocket dialling?

To lock ur screen
Google Galaxy Nexus (GSM)
ROM: AXIOM HYBRYD B6
Kernel: GLaDOS 1.34

I have a cool story, I have a friend that has an LG Cookie KP500 that uses "hold to unlock", Then, One night, She slept with her phone below the pillow. The next morning, My mom complained that she recieved a phone call from my friend that, according to the call log, was dialed 1 in the morning!

Honestly you put FAR too much faith in the whole "capacitive touchscreens" thingy...
If you don't lock your phone with the lockscreen, your screen (and hence phone) will activate quite often, specially if you keep it in your front pockets (and not jacket/bag pockets), because of the contact with your body.
It's far less a problem when you have a "cover" (leather or something like that) for your phone, but not everyone has that. Lockscreen (and widgets like that) allows you to avoid problems with it.
And you don't realize how stupid things can happens by "randomly" pushing/sliding/moving on your phone's screen. You could end up calling people repeatedly, delete things you don't want to be deleted, and so on and so on.
Worse case would be you "locking" your phone with wrongs passwords attemps or pattern lock attemps.
But really if you don't want one, don't use one.

Same here, to avoid pocket dialing and screwing up your phone.
Moreover, it the power button is very sensible, you could end draining your battery without realizing...
Anyway, it is here for some purpose (or maybe not?)
Lets go ask Google...

Really? No one in here actually uses it for a little added security? It gives me peace of mind knowing that if it gets stolen, the person is most likely not going to know how to get past the lock screen to access all my stuff.

I hate my lockscreen. Its irritating. No one ever holds my phone and I know it will never get stolen. Also, I always have my screen face out in my pocket. I don't know why, maybe habit. Accidental dialing and calling will not be an issue.
If anything, I want a lockscreen that you just tap a button and then it unlocks.

N1 screen calibration

I'm convinced that the screen is slightly out of calibration - but I can see no way to reset the calibration. (I'm ex WinMo!) - it must be in there somewhere - or do i need "an app for that".
Advice appreciated
G.
I was also thinking this. Unfortunately I still have not bought the phone yet, or I would of tried creating an app to test this theory. If a touch can be captured in x/y data, we could see what the problem is with the bottom row keys.

The more I use the phone, I'm starting 2 think that the screen is not so much out of calibration, but is very sensitive 2 the angle that U touch the screen. when I use 2 hands 2 use the phone, It seems 2 always respond correctly
cause my finger is touching straight down, but if I use 1 hand and try 2 reach
across the it responds off a lil at times. 2 solve this I put the phone 2 the end of my
fingers and secure it as far from my thumb as possible. awkward at first 4 me be it responds correctly when I do. Hope this is clear and helps U. I do have big hands though.

I might know what you are talking about. At times I can't slide home screens when using the phone with one hand and it can get very annoying, but I blame myself rather than this wonderful phone.
I also remember my wife using the phone while it was flat on the desk and it would not respond properly, but as soon as it was picked up and did the same procedures it would work properly. We were thinking that It may have something to do with the angle of the phone and our fingers on the screen. Dont really know I just know how to get it working.
Have you guys rooted and enabled multi-touch?
If not, are you sure this isn't to do with the lack of multi-touch. On my N1 I have the same problem when using it with one hand. And I've noticed it's because part of my palm sometimes touches the screen as I'm holding the phone. As theres no multi-touch it won't register what I'm selecting with my thumb until my palm stops touching the screen.
At first I suspected it was an issue with the screen responsiveness/calibration aswell. Because as you try and tap with your thumb a few times, eventually you move your palm and it works.
However, then I took a closer look everytime it happened, and noticed part of my palm was always touching the screen.
Obviously this doesn't happen when you use two hands as usually you will then hold the phone with your fingertips, not by wrapping your hand around it.

I think you are correct about the palm touching the screen. I have rooted and installed the modaco custom ROM, but I have not installed anything else for multi-touch. I will definitely look into this, thanks.

Coming from an iPhone it was not something I ever thought about, so was quite releaved when I figured out why it was happening.
Was on here looking for widgets when I spotted this so thought I'd register and save you scratching your head trying to figure it out like I did.
Lots of stuff to love about the phone, especially the battery life which I'm really impressed with and hadn't even expected to be a plus point over the 3GS. This was just supposed to be a stop gap until the iPhone 4G, but I'm actually thinking I may stick with it now

If you stick with it then welcome to android.
If you don't then you just need to have fun with this phone.
I've been finding ways around the major niggles I had over the last couple of weeks. So it's looking promising that I won't be splashing out for another iPhone in June/July.
It helps that my brother has one and I've had some time to play with it and get everything the way I want it. Which is part of the reason I got it now. If it had been during a really busy period (work wise), i'd probably be back on the 3GS.

Speakerphone during phone call on facedown?

I had this feature with my TP2, and used it a lot.
Is there any mod of some sort I can install on my EVO 4G to allow the speakerphone to automatically activate when the phone is facedown?
I'm sure others would be interested in this as well.
Thanks!
yea there definitely is because it worked like that on the hero, someone will make it happen hopefully
I did not know that about the Hero!
Hopefully some awsome members here at xda could port that mod/app to the Evo sometime soon...
bump!
I'm curious to know if anyone else has heard anything about re-instating this feature on the EVO 4G!
Thanks
I would def use it

I'd imagine you could code it not to look for a certain orientation, but to look for a rate of change of the Z axis that would indicate that it suddenly stopped face down on a surface. If it is coded like that, in your scenario you would only trigger it if you brought it off your face than slapped yourself with the phone. The impulse you get from a hard object is much different from a soft object and I imagine that for most people, they're talking about tables and counter tops here which are much harder than your face.

does anyone know if there is a way to hang up without turning the screen back on? Sometimes when driving and talking on the speakerphone its such a pain to wake the screen and then press end. Sometimes the other end hangs up and i end up pressing a button on the home screen instead. annoying not having a hard button for hanging up!

Thumbprint Unlock: Trick or treat?

So I'm hanging out at my cousins salon and this guy comes in with several phones, one is an EVO. I'm assuming he's some type of rep since he's trying to sell phone contract etc. Anyway, he pulls out his EVO and was showing it around asking people to try to unlock it using their thumb print. 3 or 4 people tried it and it wouldn't work, he takes his thumb and places it on the screen and it unlocks. If this is an actual working program, where can I get it for my EVO? If he's just doing some "slight of...thumb" trickery, it was pretty slick and I STILL want to know where or how I can get it! Anyone have this on their EVO?

... don't be naive, Evo's screen cannot scan anything. It's an output-only device. Doh.
Obviously there's some button or accelerometer-action that he did to make it seem like it was his print that unlocked it.
it's an app...
touch the screen and it vibrates... you set the amount of vibrations until release... this will unlock the device..
Thanks for your reply, do you know where I can find the app? I thought it was pretty slick although I felt there was some trickery going on! : )

What's with all the space on the bottom of the phone?

Just curious...
I wonder why LG made the phone with all that space on the bottom of the screen where the four touch buttons are?
Could it be perhaps they stuffed everything in that area like the antenna etc...

[Q] Sliding Hinge

My friend says that the sliding mechanism is a hinge and that if you were to drop it, the screen and keyboard will come apart. I was wondering if this were true. She said that's why she went with the 3G Slide....
that's always a possibility, i suppose, but maybe she's thinking of the g2? i know that there was a lot of talk about the z-hinge and how flimsy and loose it became with normal use.
I don't think so, I told her that I was planning on getting this phone and she was like "NOOOOO,, don't get it, if you drop it, it'll break into two pieces!!!!" She is currently trying to convince me that the 3G Slide is better. I disagree
totally agree with you. i guess, to each their own... even if they're wrong...
what kind of hinge is it? i was reading that the hinge was like....you could push each end of the phone and like it would go up. im saying like it could do that. for example, moving it up on the left a little then the right etc.... i dunno if that makes sense....
i know what you're saying. like each side of the hinge would move independently instead of moving together, in tandem. mine wiggles a tiny bit in between lock positions (opened/closed), but there's no reason i can think of to not have it either completely opened or closed. it's sturdy in those positions. it's a pretty solid phone and i'm pretty hard on phones. there's no more reason to be more worried about this particular phone, rather than any other phone, breaking in any way.
I use to have a 3G slide and now have a 4G Slide. The 3G slide is a good phone but very weak. The slide on the 4G Slide is like the 3G Slide but definately more solid.

There is a little bit of play to the sliding mechanism, but it feels pretty solid.
If you had any idea how many times a day I slide it in and out - I still stubbornly use the hardware keyboard for all of my terminal work, and slide it in to get the soft keyboard for the / key, then slide it back out to type in more of the command.
You can imagine how often I slide the keyboard in and out on the phone at this point - significantly above average use.
I've had it for just over 5 months, at least half of that time was round-the-clock dev time directly interacting with the device.
HTC makes a good phone - still works great and I haven't noticed any seperation or loosening of the slide mechanism in the time i've been putting it through an elevated level of use.
--------
Any device that is not one solid piece has the potential to split apart if you drop it.
Unless you routinely abuse your device, or just don't care enough to take care of it ... it should not be a concern.
I break an average of one a month flip-phones on my verizon plan...drop it off a roof, into a bucket of paint, gets crushed in my pocket or I just get vent some frustration by smashing it against a wall or something.
( It took me a long time to get to the cell phone thing because I honestly dislike phones. I have incoming calls blocked on my T-Mo plan - which is probably why I still have my doubleshot in one piece - lmao. To me this device is an anywhere computer, I don't do phone calls or text messaging with it. )
But those flip phones are the cheapest ones I can get, no data or anything crazy, just basic talk. If you treat this device like one of those p.o.s. handsets, it won't last long...none of them will.
I recommend a case for it - I use the trident one because it's soft and absorbs shock which further insulates it from problems like we are discussing.
Definitely get insurance on it if you don't already, it's expensive enough to warrant it if you do have to replace it because of an accident.

Blue you should write an app to replace terminal emulator for the mt4gs lol, I dunno how you could possibly deal with that / issue so often.
Anyways. If I dropped this 700 dollar phone and it split in two I would go to tmo and ***** so much that it deserves a free manufacturers warranty. They definitely built this phone very strong and I doubt that this will ever happen unless you take an epic fall and somehow land on the phone with your knee while its open and smash the hell out of it at the perfect angle to snap the hinge or something.
I've dropped this phone many times and its still fine. this phone is heavy duty. And your girlfriend doesn't know what she's talking about. If I threw this phone 50 yards I'm thinking that the hinge would still work, if nothing else did

As a matter of fact, the sliding mechanism on the doubleshot (the REAL name of the phone) is rock solid. There are ZERO hinges in it.
The HTC VISION has hinges "z-hinge", and even that.... ROCK SOLID. I have one, its been dropped, its been flung, its been crushed, NOTHING came apart. The opening/closing action on it is the perfect balance between firm and functional.
I have ZERO complaints about either the Vision OR the Doubleshot. The Doubleshot is the GF's phone BTW, I'm not going to upgrade the Vision until there is an actual benefit from doing so.
Don't fret about the doubleshot's SLIDING mechanism -- its VERY solid.

Ur right, my brother has it. he actually loaded the g2 keyboard with double sided tape and shut the phone so that it will never open again. His phone along with my friend's g2 would open if it was held from the back of the phone and faced the ground.
Maybe what I should have said was loose, not weak. My friend ended up fixing it by getting a new spring for the phone. He rebuilt it and it works great. The stock spring is usually bad out of the box (g2)

Waaaaah WAAAAAAH WAAAAAH.
I happen to actually own one. No modifications to it outside of the software realm. The spring tension on it is exactly perfect and I would ABSOLUTELY NOT like it if the spring was any harder.
The ENTIRE "problem" with the spring on the VISION (which is not a real problem) is related to most of those people who previously had an HTC DREAM. It had BULLDOZER SPRINGS on the screen, so naturally ANYTHING would seem weaker IN COMPARISON.
In fact, the design of HTC VISION doesn't really even need springs to begin with! GRAVITY will hold it in the proper position. The only way it will "randomly open" is if you INTENTIONALLY hold it wrong to prove a pointless point.

Ok so I talked to my friend and I saw the sliding mechanism. I don't really know how to explain it...its like a train on tracks. I don't know if I make sense, but its kinda like that. She seemed pretty convinced the sliding mechanism works on a hinge and is really bad. She told me that's why she went with the 3G Slide. But even though she said that, I still REALLY want this phone. So the phone slides, and is not on a hinge?
BTW I know the real name...I just didn't think of using it

Ok so I talked to my friend and I saw the sliding mechanism. I don't really know how to explain it...its like a train on tracks. I don't know if I make sense, but its kinda like that. The sliding part of the mt4gs is pro. Get it. This phone is 4 times faster than the 3g slide. If the slider on this phone had issues there would be threads about it. And if anyones 4gs ever split in two pieces on a drop, it would have been posted about on the forums, guaranteed. This is a good phone. The feel of the keyboard is not top notch, but its reliable and durable.

There is no hinge on this phone. Why can't we just leave it at that? Weird thread...
