[Q] Installed TrickDroid 6.1. Do I need to flash new kernel now? - HTC One S

I've successfully installed TrickDroid 6.1 and also the Tweaking software on my T-Mobile One S. At the very end the of the install instructions it says, "You can flash the stock kernel with the Boot Flash Script afterwards."
I've flashed many ROMs on other phones before but don't recall this step. Is it necessary? Right now the ROM works fine, but some of the tweaks (volume wake and Google Ears) do not. Thanks!

Idk about "have to" since torxx uses stock kernel... but I think he modifies it so I ALWAYS flash the boot.img that's packaged in the rom.zip

I believed the Trickdroid 6.1 has an OC kernel built in.
So if the OC kernel is what you want don't have to do anything else.
If you want the stock kernel run the boot flash script

[Q] Overclocking ROM-free

I want to overclock the NS without having to replace the rom. Would this be possible? Are there additional risk associated with overclocking without replacing the ROM?
Thanks in advance!
Yes you can. All you need is root and clockwork recovery. Then download Netarchy's kernel. I know for sure that his kernel works on stock rom since he said so himself. I don't know about Trinity kernel though.
I run stock and I've tried both the trinity stock kernel and netarchy cfs kernel OC @ 1.2ghz. Personally I've had better results on the netarchy kernel.

Can I put the stock kernel if I don't like the netarchy kernel? Because I use Bluetooth and wifi always and i just wanted to get a little bit more of my NS!
Make a nandroid backup of the stock rom then flash the kernel. I use netarchy every day and am usually on wifi with my bt earpiece in.

I'm having a hard time finding how to flash the kernel (found a lot about how to flash the ROM though).
Would someone link me a FAQ or list some quick instructions on how to go about it?
I have ROM manager installed already (woot!)
Thanks again!

same thing as flashing a ROM.
just make sure if you're flashing a kernel over stock.. make sure its the kernel built for the "stock" rom and not a kernel for CM7 or Bionix etc

Assuming the kernel you want is clockwork compatible, put the zip file of it in your sdcard.
Boot to clockwork recovery either via ROM Mgr (if you're rooted) or via fastboot if you're not.
In Clockwork, find the menu option to install a update/file/zip from sdcard. Select that option, then navigate with the volume keys to the zip file for the kernel. Select it by pushing the power button. Select and answer yes for the are you sure warning. Wait for it to give you a update applied successfully message.
Navigate up to where you can select reboot, and reboot.
You should be on your new kernel.
I WOULD ALWAYS RUN A NAND BACKUP FROM CLOCKWORK BEFORE MESSING WITH THIS STUFF. And ideally, I would keep a copy of that backup on my laptop or dropbox account, not just my sdcard on the phone.
Thanks for all your (very quick) help!
I'm currently running Netarchy's 1.2.2 BFS @ 1.3 and it definitely feels a big snappier with loading some programs
I put today the netarchy kernel 1.2.2 and i have one question...
Where is the VooDoo Improvements? I didn't find the application!
For me the kernel is stable and wifi works even when bluetooth is disabled!

After I root...

So, I am going to do a lot more research prior to rooting, but I had a couple of general questions that I was wondering about, before I begin the steps leading up to rooting.
1) I presume the easiest way for me to root my Thunderbolt is the Revolutionary Root? This will take be through rooting and installing the CW recovery that I need, correct?
2) Right after I root, If I want to install roms/kernels? than I can just get Rom Manager from the android market?
3) Once I install Rom Manager, can I just flash a rom that is compatible with my Thunderbolt? Can I just flash a kernel that is compatible with the Rom?
I suppose where I get a lil lost is the flashing compatibility part. What kernels work with what roms, what roms I can flash... I have read a number of articles, so I suppose what I'm asking is...
Will the process more or less be: Revolutionary Root, Install Rom Manager from market, flash a rom (just the most popular one). Is the Kernel flashing piece important? Do I need to flash a different kernel? Is it easy to tell in Rom Manager which kernel/rom I can use?
Yes use revolutionary to root and install custom recovery (cwr). You can use ROM manager to download custom roms if you want, only roms for your device will show up. Or you can download custom roms from forums, this is the method I prefer.
Just use kernel that comes with the Rom for the time being some developers include a custom kernel and others make modifications to the HTC kernel itself. Kernels are seperated in development section having to do with sense and aosp that is the first way to seperate them. Second would be leak the kernel was based on such as imo test 3.8 was based on newest leak so it works for just about if not all newest sense roms. When in doubt fire up a question in the Rom thread itself and ask what kernels those people are using, find a Rom like BAMF or thunderstick or synergy where the developers or support staff are very active.
Also you will need to flash a new radio right after rooting if you are still using froyo, I am using newest leak but different phone work differently. Once you install the radio VIA Hboot. Reboot phone and remove zip file from root of SD card now place your Rom image on SD card and reboot to recovery and install your new Rom.

This is good info.. thanks.
Well, I am upgraded to Gingerbread as of VZW's last update and still unrooted and stock.
So, if I were to root (using revolutionary) and install Rom Manager... could I just install something like Cyanogenmod or BAMF right through Rom Manager?
What do you mean by kernel that comes with the Rom? The kernel that is listed to use with the Rom? Or do you mean if I flash BAMF or something popular, just leave whatever kernel I have as is?

When you flash a rom it flashes the kernel too with whatever one the devs packed with it.

Okay, clear enough.
So, for someone like myself, just use revolutionary root, install rom manager and play around a lil with flashing roms using rom manager for awhile. I understand that I can install roms from my SD card, but it sounds like at least initially installing roms right from rom manager would be the simplest. I can also not worry about installing a different kernel during this "honeymoon" phase. Just pick the latest version of whatever Rom I want and flash the rom?
After you root you need to install superuser so CWM can function. I have read that some people flash their CWM via hboot after s-off and then go right to recovery to flash the root gaining RUU, then enjoy your root.
Do not flash ROMs right from CWM reboot to recovery clear data/cache and under advanced davlik cache and then install Rom from install from SD and choose zip file and I always store mine in downloads since I download all my roms right to my phone and download md5 checker from market and always check the md5 if it does not match don't think its a mistake redownload and try again.

Agreed, it is better to install the ROM through recovery instead of installing through ROM manager as sometimes it doesn't work right.
Don't forget to use thank you for all you great answers.

[Q] Kernel Flash Help...

Currently running a SkyRocket i727 with GB 2.3.5. I have ROM Manager, Root Explorer and ROM Toolbox installed and the device is rooted. Also flashed CWM. I would like to flash my kernel to one that allows me to replace/modify the boot animation. I tried this one from Da_G:
ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/cwm-ke...el-0.43-v2.zip
On reboot, I get a "Process system....." failure and the phone won't do anything. Pulled the battery, booted in CWM and restored from backup. Phone is working now.
Can someone help me with doing a kernel flash that will work? The ROM is the stock ROM. I was told that you can flash the kernel without having to flash a new ROM.
Thanks.
This is my favourite gb kernel

If that doesn't work try Eugene's sgs2 streamline kernel

[Q] Can you install CM9 with HTC Dev bootloader unlock but S-ON?

To cut a long story short, it seems the HBOOT on my Sensation is the latest one and is not compatible with Revolutionary, doesn't even get upto the point where it's meant to generate the beta key, just says HBOOT isn't supported.
Short of jamming wires into my phone, it seems I can't get S-OFF on the current HBOOT, but I have got the official HTC Dev bootloader unlock working fine and my phone is currently rooted on the stock ICS ROM.
However I want to install CM9 on my phone. AFAIK, with the official HTC bootloader unlock my kernel and radio cannot be changed but everything else can.
So can I install CM9 successfully using CWM if I have the official bootloader unlock or will it only work with S-OFF? I guess the real question is will CM9 on the Sensation work with the default kernel, radio, and firmware?
Thanks!
NVM, finally found a good guide to flash custom ROMs and with custom kernels with S-ON if you are HTC bootloader unlocked, will use this for CM9 and see how it goes
did you find that after doing this it messed up your wifi, cuz near the end it says there's a possibility?
Been using it for a day and WiFi works perfectly.
The WiFi will only be a problem if the kernel doesn't flash, but in the case of CM9 it needs a custom kernel to even boot anyway, the Sense kernel won't work. So if CM9 boots it'll work
Also 4EXT has been updated since that thread was written and when you install the 4EXT recovery it now asks you if your device is S-ON, if you hit yes it'll turn the SmartFlash thing on automatically. What that does is flash the kernel separately before you exit the recovery to reboot back into Android and in my case it worked fine
Only catch is that you can only install ROMs for your current firmware. I have 3.32 so I can pretty much install any ICS ROM, but I can't install a GB ROM and I might not be able to install a Jellybean ROM, for example. But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it
I had this too, and I found out that I could flash only ROMs, where kernel is ready made .img file inside the zip. To do this, I needed to install the ROM (it installed into /system, but the kernel couldn't be installed due to protection), reboot into fastboot, and flash the extracted kernel img with ADB from the PC (as ADB was only way to flash kernel).
If there was a custom installer where I could configure the kernel (set CPU speed etc)., that would mean that the kernel image is assembled during installation, and it is not readily available in ROM. In that case, I was f***ed .
Most ROMs have the standard boot.img file in the .zip though, and you can check it by just extracting the files and taking a look
The 4EXT process basically does the same as you did but automatically, it's just as much effort as flashing a ROM normally
I see one problem with that your are using cwm as the recovery and that simply will not work because you can't flash kernels because your s on but there's light at the end of the tunnel but you must be rooted to do this you Will need to install 4ext custom recovery why because it will allow you to flash kernels with smart flash enabled and you can't do that with cwm

Change Kernel on JellyBam v4.1.0

As I said: I was wandering if it is possibile to change kernel, I tried this one, installed with aroma, but my Sensation is stuck in a bootloop.
I'm S-on, I tried to flash either with and without the 4ext smart flash with the same result.
Anyone has a solution?

flash the boot.img of the rom manually
see here how
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 (only extra 1step)
otherwise flash another kernel
which kernel did you use?

Sorry! I forgot to past the link and then I had to wait five minutes to edit my post and, well, I forgot again.
This is the kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216197 I don't really need it but I would have tried some oc and the sweep2wake function and stuff, so, any other kernel (or even the rom one, if it's possible to set it) is the same to me.
Just to tell you: I flashed Jellybam after a full wipe, and it was working, then flashed the kernel, then, when I got stuck in the bootloop I flashed Jellybam again without wiping, right now all works properly.

That kernel is NOT designed for AOSP Jelly Bean ROMs like JellyBAM. That kernel is designed for Sense Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs, so it's to be expected that your phone won't boot after flashing that over JellyBAM. If you want a kernel to use with JellyBAM that has all the features that you just mentioned (Sweep2Wake, OC, etc.) then try my kernel (Sultan kernel). The thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035897

Yeah well, I was looking at the title of that kernel thread while I realized which was the problem, I'm glad to tell you that I flashed your kernel last night (I'm Italian) and after a whole day using it I have to say that I really like it (even if I've to settle with all the differences between the governors and the best way to set them with aroma).
Thank you!
