Hello,
I've just upgraded my home router, in order to speed up and future proof my home network, I've upgraded from a netgear DG834GT to a DGND3700, (mainly to add faster wifi and 1Gb ethernet).
On my old router my wifi connection from my phone was always 72Mbps. So I installed the new router and configured it to what I think is all the max settings, however my initial wifi speed on the phone was a lower 65Mps!?
After a while I realised that if I switched the phone wifi setting to max performance it would achieve 72Mbps (even though before with the older router it could always achieve this speed with this setting the other way). I'm no means an expert on wifi..etc.(clearly) can anyone explain... (please)
Another question is, what is the fastest speed anyone has had wifi running on the Desire S?
My new(ish) laptop manages to get a 300Mpbs wifi link to the new router! am I missing some configuration option?
Thanks
I've only had 72 mbps too, with a WNDR4000 -
I've tried setting the router's 2.4gHz to deliver it as fast as 300 mps or at 145 - makes no difference just 1.5 metres from the router.
I don't know if there's any way to set the Desire S to find the 5Ghz signal.
Disappointing
What do you use to check the speed ?
Edit : Also what is your normal broad band connection supposed to be?
I'm on 16 Mb line with Sky and phone pulls in at 8.21 Mbps over wifi
Just checked on WIFI settings on phone and for Sky it says 54Mbps with singal strength as excellent
i dont know much about this topic but have you tried setting the channel to auto, transmit power to 100%,turned on 802.11n?
As far as I'm aware, the Desire S is only officially wireless G protocol so 54mbps theoretical max.
However, it may be like the older HD2 which has, albeit by method of registry change, wireless N support.

Hi,
So i had the lightning rom on my SGS2 for a few months and now i've moved to VillainRom 3.0.
Now i have a strange issues that the wifi will not turn off when it can see a favorited connection. This is ok at home but when i travel around i see public hotspots which then blocks my 3G connection.
Has anyone had this before?
Thanks,
I have only had this phone a couple weeks, used to have an EVO, I am noticing that this phone seems like it can't pick up a strong WiFi signal.
It is pretty pathetic, honestly. Any suggestions?

I have no help to offer, just wanted to say I am not having that problem. I'm using a SPH-D720.

indeed ...agreed with you...
my girlfriend ipod have better wifi reception compare to my nexus....
Try change your kernel to franco or matr1x....
Matrix improved my cell radio signal but not wifi

NO wifi problem here NS4G, just got 17.22Mbps down with 4.83mbps up. the signal may look weak but it still strong.
Here is a bit more info, missing from my previous post. I'm using the D720SPRKE1 baseband with stock Androis 2.3.7 on a (rooted) SPH-D720. Wifi is fine for me.

basically same here
signal is weak , but speed is fast as i using it on computer with full signal
problem is , when it connects it fast , but easily lost connection and sometimes very hard to reconnect ...

Agreed. Compared to my Epic 4G (running a Froyo ROM), the range of the WiFi and Bluetooth radios are shortened. What's interesting to me is now that my Epic 4G is running a GB ROM, the range of the WiFi and BT radios have been reduced there as well.
I'm wondering if this might be a Samsung GB driver issue?

well , i think it is WIFI hardware problem , low power and short range.

those are megabits per second, not megabyte, right?
8 bit are 1 byte, so for wifi your numbers are not really good per se. i'd rather say kudos to down-speed of your internet-connection, up is okay-ish...
wifi g has a theoretical max of 54 mbit, n-standard up to 150 mbit. I'm sure the limiting factor in your case is your internet connection though, not the wifi.
that said, the nexus s has a weak wifi-reception (as in how good the reception has to be until a network is found), but once you're connected it's somewhat stable.

It very well could be. I just think it's interesting that my Epic 4G now has the same range as my Nexus S 4G. When my Epic was running any Froyo ROM I could easily get a decent WiFi signal 50 feet from my house outside. Now that it's running a Gingerbread ROM (like my Nexus is), I have to almost be inside to connect to my router.
this is what i think if you say they have same range...
more power = more range = more speed
lower power --> same range as more power --> lower speed
I'm also having problems with this... very low wifi signal on the nexus inside my house, but 100% strength on my (old) nokia 5800 and on the macbook :/
I think this was a power saving decision, since the wifi radio is a battery drainer and this way we have better battery duration while on wifi, but i'm not sure..
(using the latest franco.kernel, but had the same issue with the stock kernel)
Has anyone noticed poor WiFi reception on their GS3? Unless I am within a few feet of the router the signal drops to one or two bars. I've tried increasing the WiFi TX but it doesn't seem to help.

I have not noticed any issues here. Are you stock or running something custom? I am completely stock and get good reception.

I own Blade II and I am not currently using it so I thought I could use it as Wifi HotSpot for my Gnex and nexus 7. I live in Poland and we have here carrier Aero2 which is providing free internet access, you are paying only for sim card around 6$ and you can use free 512Kbps internet, it only works on 900Mhz 3G towers but blade is supporting this frequency. I would like to use my Blade strictly as Wifi Modem only and I am wondering which is best ROM and Wifi Tethering software for such a use. I would like to have decent battery life and true wifi connection, not AD-HOC which is provided by play store apps. I tried to underclock CPU to around 300Mhz and I was ok with tether speed, but native wifi tethering in GingerBread is still battery hog. Is there any 3rd party software with non Ad-hoc hotspot and good battery consumption? Which is best rom for saving battery? Best thing would be modded android with modem feature only but i don't think there is anything like that. Thanks for help and greetings from Poland
There's no such thing as a best ROM because everyone has different things they like in a ROM.
My best advice to you would be to just test out different ROMs and see which one you like the most.
