Just curious if there are any other Thunderbolt users who are experiencing the same data issues that I am with the hotspot feature.
When using the hotspot, my data connection will repeatedly drop in and out, to the point of making the hotspot unusable.
This is the second device, first one returned and exchanged for the same reason.
I live in an area with great 4G and have never dropped from 4G to 3G because the 4G coverage is so widespread.
I'll turn on the hotspot and then at some point as I'm streaming Grooveshark or surfing and browsing, my data connection drops, and then begins to cycle on and off.
I have changed channels, trying every one and have taken a video of this behaviour, showing it to the store managers at my local Verizon store.
I have also sent the video to a level 2 tech support guy hoping he has some clue as to what is going on, have not heard back yet.
You can literally watch the 4G icon cycle on and off of the signal indicator, not switching to 3G, simply losing a connection all together.
I Googled and found a link to an Engadget article which documented the same issue.
I'd appreciate any help for those who may have experienced and / or have fixed this issue.
You can try to force the phone to use LTE only instead of LTE/EvDO hybrid connection. Go to Market and download the LTE On/Off app, then follow the instructions to make it LTE only and try again.
I have experienced similar problem yesterday but it has been great today so far. Could be a software problem, could be a network problem, or both.
I've been experiencing the same issue since I picked up the phone at launch. It occurs on my PC, my Xoom, and my iPad 2. I can count on the data connection eventually dropping during normal surfing, though I can usually accelerate the process by opening up a video on Youtube and jumping back and forth to random parts.
So far VZW tech support has not been of assistance, not acknowledging that there may be a larger problem despite issues documented at engadget as well as threads at androidcentral.com and VZW's own community forum.
I have experienced the same problem. I found a remedy but it is a pain. If you switch your preferred network to LTE Mode only, turn off mobile network, switch to airplane mode, switch off airplane mode, then turn mobile network back on, it should be stable. If its not, try a reboot. Usually I will not drop connection after this. The only problem with LTE Mode as your preferred network is that it will not drop to 3g if you lose 4g coverage, it goes straight to 1x for the most part. I hope they get these bugs worked out soon because it is rather annoying to deal with for power users.
So after sending the vid to the level two tech support at Verizon, he replied via email that this is a known issue with no known resolution date. I guess now we know why the hotspot is free, it's a known issue that it doesn't work 100% for 100% of Thunderbolt users.
They have until 5/15 to fix it, or extend the free period I guess. How can they charge for a service that has a known issue?
I've spoken to four level two techs regarding the matter, one said it was a "known issue," the other three stated they were not aware of any issues.
Kinda sucks - this is almost like antennagate
next time your data goes out dial ##778 and go into edit mode. Password is 000000. Under modem settings change "Rev. A" to enable if it isn't already AND MAKE SURE YOU COMMIT CHANGES.

The issue here is 4g data dropping when using the mobile hotspot. EVDO revisions aren't involved.

I have experience a similar issue with 3G albeit not often, but when I'm trying to download large files, or even small ones at that, my 3G will just drop. Then it flips back. Then drops. It lasts for 15 minutes and then it's fine.
My hotspot keeps dropping connection enough that it makes it difficult to do anything other than surf. Its happened on multiple ROMs for me. I even went back to stockROM and still had this issue pop up. My fix has been to just disconect from hotspot and then start surfing from my thunderbolt. Once im recieving data again to my device I can reconnect hotspot and Im up and running again.
Sometimes tho, my 3g will just drop all together and I have to toggle Lte or evdo and then back to cdma auto. Toggling between network types seems to get me back and running......sometimes. And sometimes I just have to wait cause nothing works. I have noticed if I do a complete wipe and install ROM again things start working again for awhile.
Sidenote: Dont live in 4g area.
Sorry to be re-opening this topic, but has anyone heard anything new about this problem? I use the hotspot intermittently and it would actually be worth the price to me so I was wondering if anyone knows if there will be a fix.
Also, do any of the other applications that allow tethering after rooting have this problem?
Yea its got to be the radio because I flashed both leak and stock and used mobile hotspot and root tether and both would drop data several times but what was funny is when it would drop signal most of the times I could just awake my phone not even unlock but just awake it the data connection would start back up again
Maybe you could try this until a fix or better 4g coverage comes out

Are you guys seeing this only in the stock hotspot app or in apps like wireless tether also?
HTC Thunderbolt --- das BAMF 1.5 Remix
I have the same problem, it sucks

I haven't actually used any other application other than the preinstalled hotspot application.
I'm new to this and was under the impression that you need to root your phone in order to use other ones. Being new, I'm not prepared to make a mistake doing that.

The problem is due to the buggy mobile hotspot app. Same problem on my thunderbolt. It is not a hardware issue but software. Trust me, been there and done that. Fix is to root and installed "wireless tether" for rooted user. You won't look back especially after May 15th.
I have the data drop issue with the mobile hotspot, but no problem at all with wifi tether.
Alright I guess rooting is on my agenda today. Thanks.
I'm having the same issues on 3g, using the mobile hotspot app and Barnacle Wifi. I will try the Wireless Tether app and see if it works any better.
I rooted my phone Saturday mainly for tethering. I use my phone as my internet connection while I'm storm chasing. Well today was a chase day and everything was working great until I hit edge network and then i couldn't get any data on my laptop. It showed a local connection, but no internet. Now I haven't tested this since and I have 3g at home so I can't test it there. Does anyone know if this is how it is supposed to work and if so is there a work around? I'm hoping it was just a fluke and will work fine chasing the next couple days. We have my wife's iPhone 4 using mywi as a backup just in case though. Should I be able to use edge using the wireless ap in Android?
Thanks
Are you using the stock tethering?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Yes I am using the stock tethering program and have the tethering manager froze.
you should be able to tether on edge but it will be slow, maybe slow enough to get an error. also i have had issues where i need to reset the radio on the phone by turning off wireless networks and turning it back on.
Ok thanks for the info. I just wanted to make sure it was possible and I didn't have to adjust a setting somewhere that I was overlooking. I will be using again today and tomorrow so I will get a chance to test it out some more. I'm very aware of the very slow speeds on edge but it usually works for updating radar information ok. And Opera web browser also works very well over edge with the turbo mode on. Thanks!
Tested out the tethering a lot the last two days and have came to the conclusion it will drop your tethering connection with two or less bars of edge. It will auto reconnect as soon as my signal improves above that level. Still a little frustrating.
anyone experiencing this?
ROM - BAMF RC2
Radio - tried 2/2.5 same issue
Location - King of Prussia, PA
what about those stock out there? are you having same issue?
EDIT: i just found a solution!!
download "OPEN GARDEN TETHER" on the market
faster than barnacle.
i am watching netflix now and no buffer. galaxy tab 10.1 is connected, mac-mini, apple TV.. woohooo!!!
I am and it's pissing me off so bad on gingeritis tried 2/2.5 radios in San Diego, CA and the LTE keeps going out in general to 3G the 1X then back and locks to 3G but when i get 4G its 6 bars.
now say thanks to me
i updated my post. it didnt work on BAMF RC1 works flawlessly on RC2
the Galaxy TAB 10.1 is out in the states why havent i seen it anywhere?

justinglock40, been having issues with this as well in LA, been happening for almost 2 weeks now. constantly stuck in upload for 4G and 3G. looks like a socal thing and from what i've been reading, vzw knows about it.
Running MR2 on Eaton Rom v1.5.1b.
but i'll test out open garden tether and let u know. thanks ad78.
i have no disconnects now. and the best thing about garden tether is its the same speed as the mobile hotspot. unlike barnacle, you only get 3G speed when tethering
So, I've had connectivity issues with 4G on for I don't know how long. So I typically always just kept my TB on 3G all the time. But I want 4G!
So I've stayed on 4G for the past few weeks and it's been hit or miss when I pick up my phone - do I have a data connection or not?! I also always keep WiFi on - but I'm only connected to wifi at home. So during the day at work, it's just on but not connected.
So the past week, I decided to turn wifi off when I'm not at home... and guess what?? I have no connectivity issues. 4G stays on all the time.
Is it safe to say that Wifi is causing issues with 4G?
4G has only been available here since the beginning of October... or at least that's what i believe as that's when 4G first started popping up on my phone. oddly though, even now if you go to Verizon's 4G coverage map it does not include my location as having 4G.
anyway, i never use wifi... just data. and since the beginning of October the 4G has been coming & going like crazy on my phone. it wasn't until i recently installed that new BAMF SoaB Sense 3.5 v1.02 that the 4G now seems to be stable & i did notice on their update notes that they mentioned they fixed 'connectivity' in that update.
In the first post about soab bamf notes there may be problems with sdcard mounting and unmounting. What is that all about?
There is also a note about exchange corporate email connection. Will touchdown be ablento get my work emails as it always has?
Can I install an ssl certificate in this rom that is still there after restart. It would always disappear after restart in the forever roms
So I moved to a new house which has basically no LTE and lower cellular coverage. My old house was a highrise with a literal t-mobile tower on the top, so I never even considered using wifi calling as my LTE coverage was perfect.
So here I am, with my Note 5, thinking I can rely on wifi calling in my new house. The house has excellent wifi coverage that can still achieve decent speeds even on the exterior. I use an Asus AC router that I've completely opened up to the world while troubleshooting the problem. Sitting in my living room (where my most recent call was dropped), I'm pulling down 74mbps and uploading 13mbps according to the speedtest app on the note 5.
My phone shows that it's connected to wifi and that Wifi calling is enabled. I've also changed it to "Wifi calling preferred" so it doesn't even attempt to use the limited cellular network that I can get in some rooms occasionally (depending on air density).
However, I basically miss all inbound calls, outbound calls only occasionally connect, and when I do have a successful call, it drops in and out as though I'm on an actual spotty cellular network.
I've tried Arter, SkyHigh and stock rooted kernels, all with the same results. I'm basically at my wit's end and getting ready to abandoned t-mobile. I read that exynos does not handle these handoffs and transitions as well as qualcom SOCs, but I'm reluctant to give up my great note 5 for a ****ty LG just to test this theory.
Can anyone provide some guidance or advice on how I can deal with this? I'm on the original jump plan + unlimited data and I really don't want to abandon t-mobile, but working voice is essential.

Not sure of a solution but I can tell you that I use Wifi calling all the time on the Note 5 and do not experience any of these issues.
We would need to know more details to help further.
Are you stock? If not, which rom?
When was the last time you wiped your phone?
Anyone else have Tmob in the home?
I understand your frustration but I dont think its Tmobile. Chances are its something with your internet connection or a software issue of the phone.

Thanks for the reply! Not stock, using Darthstalker V11 rom. Only person living here, but I do have a verizon iphone for work. I just moved here, and prior to moving, I had an enterprise level firewall in place, which meant I had to open up the right ports to allow for wifi calling. Since I've moved, I haven't even put it in place, so I'm just using an Asus router as a router & AP with no firewall functionality.
Phone was last wiped a couple of months ago when installing the latest version of Darthstalker. With each kernel I've tried, I've wiped the cache multiple times post-install.

Was the Wifi calling working before you moved?

I never had to actually rely on it, so I'm not sure. I used it here and there when visiting low-coverage areas, but now it's basically my only option. For reference, I moved from the DC area to a smaller town in Central VA that only recently received t-mobile LTE. That being said... in certain areas of my house I get enough t-mobile LTE to pull down 30Mbps, but the upload portion is incredibly asymmetric and only pushes about .1 mbps up... Given that I get decent LTE in some places in the house, but it drops off as soon as I turn the corner, I've configured wifi calling to prefer wifi over cellular, which leads to another odd thing....the phone basically needs to be rebooted once leaving a wifi calling network, as it'll never switch the LTE radio back unless I reboot. It'll just stay on 3g/edge otherwise.
As for my wifi coverage, I get great speeds when testing basically anywhere in the house, both upload and download. However, when I'm on a call that is clearly being routed through wifi, it'll start pinging me and warning that the call may be dropped in place where I'm still getting excellent wifi coverage.
